Michael Lamey

(Shoemaker, Nevada).

   Mr. Lamey, the pioneer in his line of trade in Nevada, and one of the county's truly honorable citizens, owes his nativity to Center county, Pa., where he was born January 11, 1823, the third of ten children who blessed the marriage of his parents, Michael and Margaret (Phillips) Lamey.  The former was born in 1799 in Berks county, Pa., and died in 1884; his wife was a native of Center county, Pa.  Young Michael's early life was spent on a farm, and afterwards for ten years he gave his attention to mercantile pursuits in the Keystone State.  Going thence to Ohio, he made his home there for some twenty months, and subsequently in 1867 became located in Pettis county, Mo., where he resided four years.  In 1871 he took up his abode in Nevada, and since that time all his efforts have been in the direction of his adopted calling.  While in Pettis county he farmed for two years and also worked at the carpenter's trade, but during his residence here, as stated, he has carried on what was the first shoe shop in the town.  His labors have been crowned with success, and by industry, economy and honorable dealing he has built up a reputation which must continue even after he shall have passed away.  In 1844 Mr. Lamey was first married, Miss Mary Long becoming his wife.  She was born in Center county, Pa., and at her death August 3, 1870, left a family of nine children:  Robert; Leah, wife of Lorenzo D. Orwick, in Akron, O.; Sarah, now deceased, who married Isaac Baney, leaving four children at her death; Amanda M., now Mrs. A. C. Lotwick, of Akron, O., Emaline, wife of Frank Clingen, in Kansas; Melvina, now Mrs. Thomas Bandy; Sam, deceased; Hattie, and Eva, wife of Wm., M. Stinett, in Kansas.  Mr. Lamey's second marriage occurred in 1871, to Mrs. Mary A. Douglass, a native of Tennessee, though reared in Illinois.   She had two daughters by a former marriage:  Ella May, now Mrs. Albert Huston; and Bertie H. wife of S. S. Hooper
