DR. Z. C. KELSO
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 654-655 Dr. Z. C. Kelso (Physician and Surgeon, Nevada). Dr. Z. C. Kelso was born in Dubois county, Ind., December 27, 1847. His father, Andrew F. Kelso, was a farmer by occupation and a native of South Carolina. While a young man he met and subsequently married Miss Susannah E. Hargrave of North Carolina, she bore him a worthy family of 14 children, the eleventh child being the subject of this sketch. His early life was passed upon a farm in his native county, and by alternately working about the home place and attending the common district school he gained the rudiments of a good education, to which was later added an attendance at Asbury University, his course extending through the Sophomore year. Having determined upon the medical profession, he commenced the study of medicine with Dr. R. M. Welman and attended steadily and diligently to his studies, after which he entered Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery to complete his preparation for practice. In 1871 he graduated from that well known institution and in a short time embarked actively in the prosecution of his adopted calling, his field of labor being in Indiana until 1882 when he came to Missouri and settled at Nevada. At that time he was unacquainted in the community but having been a thorough student and having mingled no little with men in the world he felt strong in his professional attainments and his ability to serve the people, and it was not long before he found himself surrounded by friends and in the midst of a profitable practice, both of which he still enjoys. Dr. Kelso is now associated in practice with Dr. Atkinson, referred to elsewhere in this volume, and is one of the deservedly popular and able physicians of this county, warmly attached to his profession and highly esteemed. In 1878 Miss Alvira Case, of Indiana, became his wife, but she died in November, 1880, leaving two children, Montie and Emmet. In 1883 Dr. Kelso married Mrs. Clara Thomas, also of the State of Indiana, and they have had one child, Earl. The Doctor is a member of the Masonic fraternity. [Transcribed by G. Burchell] |
