WESLEY JONES
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 867-868: Wesley Jones (Farmer, Section 16, Post-office, Montevallo). Mr. Jones’ career in life has not been one of continued prosperity by any means, though to look at his present comfortable surroundings the contrary might be thought true. From 1861 to 1880 he was a respected and influential resident of Saline county, Mo., engaged in farming and stock raising and feeding; wile there he sustained severe losses, but, not to be discouraged by such misfortunes, he immediately set about regaining his former possessions, and since coming to this county in 1880 has striven earnestly and successfully in following his adopted calling. He owns 120 acres of land. Mr. Jones was born in Pleasants county, W. Va., June 3, 1838, the youngest of eight children in the family of his parents, Lewis and Rebecca (Haines) Jones, both natives of Tyler county, Va. Young Wesley remained in the vicinity of his birthplace until some ten years of age, growing up to an excellent knowledge of farm life. Subsequently he removed to Indiana and after living there five years went to Scotland county, Mo., where he made his home until settling in Saline county in 1861. Mr. Jones has been three times married; first in 1859 to Miss Margaret Petty, in Scotland county, Mo., who died in 1869 leaving three children: Marion G., Joseph L., and Phebe E., wife of R. H. Stapp. His second wife was before her marriage Miss Letitia Stapp, of Howard county, Mo., whose death occurred in 1878. Three children were also born by this union: Marcellus W., Viola G. and Cora E. Miss Luvica Rowland, of Saline county, Mo., became Mr. Jones’ last wife, and at her death in February, 1884, she left two children: Flora M. and Theron R. At this time Mr. J. holds the position of justice of the peace in this township, the duties of which office he also discharged in Saline county. He is an active, consistent member of the Christian Church, endeavoring as best he knows how to do his whole duty. [Transcribed by Becky Siple] |
