MANELIUS W. JOHNSON
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 554: Manelius W. Johnson (Farmer and Sock-raiser, Section 27, Post-office, Walker). Among the many worthy representatives of Virginia's sons found in this township none claim amore honorable ancestry than Manelius W. Johnson, whose birth occurred in Monroe county, Va., May 9, 1854. His parent were both natives of the old Dominion--William B. and Agnes R. Johnson. As an eminent citizen of Monroe county; as one of the memory of whose deeds still lives; as a true defender of the principles inculcated in him, Wm. B. Johnson is deserving of especial mention. Leaving his home in the spring of 1862, when the mutterings of war had developed into no mistaken noise, he became a soldier under the valiant Stonewall Jackson; a detailed account of his service would involve almost a history of the Army of Northern Virginia, but suffice it to say that with a devoted love for his native State he partook of the hardships and privations of war, serving until its close in the most of the hardest fought battles of Virginia. His lamented death occurred in 1883, but he left to his children an imperishable inheritance--a spotless character. His widow, whose maiden name was Hurchman, lives on the old homeplace where she has reared a family of six boys and three girls. Though possessed of considerable wealth the father, to give his boys practical ideas of live, insure manly habits, industry and self-reliance, brought them up to work on the farm, and when not thus occupied young Manelius attended the neighborhood schools about home, completing his education at the high school of Union, Va. March 18, 1880, he was married to Miss Mattie I. Allison, daughter of Joseph C. Allison, formerly of Pike county, Mo. Two children have been born to them, William and Fayette. Mr. Johnson now owns an excellent farm in Blue Mound township containing 400 acres, and possessing modern improvement of all kinds. Stock of high grades of hogs, cattle, horses and mules are annually raised. Just in the prime of life, with superior advantages and a large and varied experience and good business capacity, Mr. Johnson has a brilliant outlook for the future, while his present position is an enviable one. Politically his is a stanch Democrat.
