JOHN JOHNSON
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 569: John Johnson (Farmer and Stock-feeder, Section 17, Post-office, Eve). Originally from a foreign land, Mr. Johnson was born on the 20th of April, 1832, in England, his parents also being natives of the same country. Josiah Johnson, his father, was a hotel keeper here, and very naturally young John learned something of this life in his youth. His mother before her marriage was Miss Isabelle Paxton, of a family many of whose members have become well and favorably known in various portions of the United States. After remaining in England until grown, having passed his time in a manner similar to the boyhood days of other youths, Mr. Johnson crossed the ocean in 1852 and settled in Michigan, where he lived for some fourteen years, or until 1866. After this he made his home in Macon county, Mo., for two years, following which, in 1868, he came to this county, where he has since been numbered among her worthy citizens, devoting himself in a quiet, unassuming way to the chosen channels of agricultural life. He is the owner of 440 acres of land, a tract under good cultivation or pasturage, and one which he knows how to manage, as is seen in the success which has attended his efforts. Personally he is well thought of, for his sterling characteristics could not render him other than popular. In 1853 Mr. Johnson was married to a schoolmate of his younger years -- Miss Hannah Ellis, who was also born in England. Eight children have blessed their union: William, John, Annie, wife of Joseph Vetters, Josiah, Robert, Mary, now Mrs. Frank Martlin, Margaret and Wesley. Mr. J. is a member of the A. O. U. W.
