THOMAS P. HOOSER
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 801: Thomas P. Hooser (Proprietor of Meat Market, Moundville). The subject of this sketch is a Kentuckian by birth and bringing up, having been born in Todd county, of the Blue Grass State, December 26, 1831. His parents were also of Kentucky nativity—George W. and Marry W. (Ring) Hooser, and of their six children Thomas P. was the eldest. Following the example set him by his father he, too, became a farmer, learning in youth the principles of that calling, and for many years during life he has given his attention to agricultural pursuits. About 1865, leaving his native State, he removed to Missouri and settled in Saline county, and later in Lafayette county, from whence he subsequently came to this county and took up a location at Moundville. During his residence here he has done well in establishing himself comfortably, and at this time he owned 80 acres of land, 40 acres of which are laid out into town lots. The meat market which he conducts is a good one and he shows thorough familiarity with his business in the management of this establishment. In 1884 Mr. Hooser sunk a coal shaft on his land and at a depth of 25 or 26 feet a 30-inch vein of coal was obtained; 18 inches further down a two-feet vein was found, and at still another depth of eight inches a 30-inch vein was discovered. This makes his land more than ordinarily valuable, and places him in a substantial position in life. May 17, 1855, Miss Sallie C. Hancock, of Kentucky, became his wife. They have five children: May B., wife of F. M. Sanders; Sallie M., wife of William Ballard Duvall; Ada Belle, now Mrs. Samuel T. Yokley; Willie L. and Charlie C. [Transcribed by Becky Siple] |
