John B. Harris

(Of Birdseye & Harris, Attorneys at Law, Real Estate, Loan and Insurance Agents, Nevada).

   As an associate of one of the representative men of Nevada, Mr. Harris shares largely in the confidence and well deserved reputation accorded the firm of Birdseye & Harris throughout this and other sections of the State.  Though only about 35 years of age, he has already reached a position of prominence in every-day affairs highly complimentary to his executive and professional ability.  A native of Clinton county, N.Y., his natal day was October 19, 1851.  His father was William F. Harris, also originally from the Empire State; his grandfather, Enos Harris, served as a soldier in the War of 1812 taking part among others in the battle of Plattsburg in 1813.  The father subsequently became engaged in farming in Kansas.  The maiden name of his wife was Lucy A. Roberts, of a good old New England family and from Vermont State.  John B. Harris, the eldest son and third child in his parents' family of 12 children, only remained in New York until about 10 years of age, then removing to LaSalle county, Ill., where he made his home until 1870.  After some time passed in Iroquois county that State, Mr. Harris went to Kingman county, Kas., in 1877, and from that locality subsequently came to this county, where his career has become well known.  In early life he enjoyed ordinary opportunities for acquiring an education, attending until 14 years of age public schools in both New York and Illinois.  His taste for reading and study soon led to his self-application in gaining knowledge, and in time he was prepared to teach school, a calling to which he gave his attention for five years.  During this period, however, he eagerly embraced the opportunity offered to study law, and finally upon application passed examination and was admitted to the bar in this county in the fall of 1883.  Locating first at Sheldon, Mr. Harris pursued his professional practice there until December, 1885 when he came to Nevada and became connected with Birdseye & Harris.  Reference has already been made to the extensive business carried on by this firm in its different lines and need not be repeated here; but with each detail of these different branches Mr. Harris is thoroughly familiar.  In private life he is a most estimable man; easily approached and kind, courteous and affable to all who come in contact with him.  To his present wife, formerly Miss Jessie R. Pope, he was married March 2, 1884, and they have one child, John B.  Mrs. Harris owes her nativity to Wisconsin.  In politics Mr. H. is a Republican.
