John Hardacre

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 22, Post-office, Goodrick)

   Since 1876 Mr. Hardacre has been a resident of this county and township, and during this time he has resided at his present location on Melton branch, a tributary to Clear creek, where he owns a good farm of 80 acres.  While not as large as others in the township that might be mentioned, it is valuable and very productive and is managed in a most satisfactory manner.  Before coming here, Mr. Hardacre had lived in Grant county, Ind., though his native place was Montgomery county, O., where he was born December 19, 1834.  His father, Leonard Hardacre, originally from Ireland, was born about 1785, and upon emigrating to America settled near Harper’s Ferry; he subsequently served in the War of 1812 under Gen. Garney.  In 1815 he married Miss Elizabeth Jones, of Maryland, whose birth occurred in 1795.  John was the youngest of their ten children.  He passed the greater part of his boyhood days in Grant county, Ind., whither his father had previously moved, and on November 1, 1855, he was married to Miss Margaret Rhonemus, daughter of George and Elizabeth (Parker) Rhonemus, the former a Virginian by birth, and the latter of Ohio nativity.  Mrs. H. was born October 6, 1838, in Clinton county, O.  Mr. Hardacre continued to farm in Grant county, Ind., until entering the army as a soldier, his enlistment in the One Hundred and First Indiana volunteer infantry dating from August, 1862.  The first battle in which he engaged was that of Milton, and after this in the engagement at Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and many others no less severe.  At the close of the War he was mustered out at Louisville, Ky., and then returned home to Grant county, continuing to remain there engaged in agricultural pursuits until his settlement in Vernon county, as already stated.  Mr. Hardacre is a man much respected in his neighborhood, liberal and honest in all his views.  In religious belief he is a Universalist.  To himself and wife eleven children have been given, whose names and date of birth are as follows:  Mary E., January 7, 1857; George W., October 22, 1858; Samuel H., December 25, 1860; Alphama, December 10, 1862; Martha E., August 4, 1865; Phebe A., December 29, 1867; Amanda J., December 25, 1869; Josiah, March 25, 1872; Willis Z., October 21, 1874; John B., December 29, 1876; Margaret S., May 26, 1880.  Politically Mr. H. is a Republican.
