S. W. GILMOR
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 523-524: S. W. Gilmor (Farmer, Section 21, Post-Office, Ellis). The entire career of Mr. Gilmor during life has been both honorable and successful. While not as conspicuous, perhaps, as that of others, it has been passed in a manner above criticism, and certainly redounds with credit upon the efforts which he has put forth in establishing himself substantially in life. Of Virginia nativity, he was born in Highland county, of the old Dominion, October 12, 1830, the son of Alexander and Sally (Slaven) Gilmor, also native to that State. Young Gilmor was brought up in the vicinity of his birthplace, there acquiring the rudiments of farm experience, which has always been his principal occupation. In 1856, he left Virginia, and the old home which had sheltered him for over twenty-five years, and removed to Iowa, settling in Warren county, at Indianola, where he resided some ten years. In 1869, he came to Vernon county, Mo., and this has since been his place of abode, his residence here extending over a period of some seventeen years. His place is one of the substantial, representative ones of this township, embracing 490 acres, and its improvements stamp him without doubt a progressive farmer. In 1873, and also in 1874, Mr. Gilmor held the position of county judge, the duties of which office he discharged with efficiency and credit, and to the satisfaction of those whose interests he had been selected to serve. in 1856, Miss Alice A. Johns, of Virginia, became his wife. They have had five children -- three now living: Mary V., wife of S. G. Welborn; Sallie A. and Rachel A. [Transcribed by Marty Patton] |
