Marcus Irenaeus Garrison

(Nevada)

   Mr. Garrison was born in Vernon county, September 7, 1847.  John F. Garrison, his father, a native of Scottsville, Ky., removed from that locality to Crawfordville, Ind., when young and there learned the trade of cabinet making.  He subsequently became one of the first settlers of Little Osage, this county, locating here not far from the year 1835, and afterward, May 19, 1842, he married Miss Sarah Elizabeth Austin, daughter of Daniel H. Austin, another of the county’s early settlers, who came here with the Missionary colony.  Four children born of this union grew to maturity:  Sarah E., married S. B. Davis; Lydia J., died after reaching womanhood; Marcus I., the subject of this sketch, and John F., who was educated at Hanover, Ind., and became a theological student at Lane Theological Seminary, of Cincinnati, dying soon after entering the ministry.  In 1850 the senior Garrison went to California, where his death occurred in a few weeks after his arrival.  His wife died in 1885 at New Albany, Ind.  Marcus Irenaeus remained in Vernon county until 20 years of age, then removing to Indiana, where he received a good education at Hanover College.  From this institution he graduated in the class of 1875, and afterwards entered Danville Theological Seminary, having determined to devote himself to the ministry.  For two years he preached at Elizabethtown, Ky., and then returned to Indiana, where the greater part of his time has been spent in evangelistic work.  In 1885 he returned to his native county, and since then has been actively engaged in devoting himself earnestly and sincerely to the cause of his Master.  Though not connected with any denomination, he labors where opportunity offers, and might be termed, perhaps, a lay evangelist.  April 28, 1880, Mr. Garrison was married to Miss Libbie Day, of New Albany, Ind., daughter of Ezekiel R. Day, an established and prominent business man of that city.  They have two children:  Allie I. and Kiel D.  Both Mr. and Mrs. Garrison were engaged in evangelical work in New Albany before locating permanently in this county.
