SYLVESTER FULLER

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 488-489:

Sylvester Fuller

(Farmer and Fruit Grower, Section 16, Post-office, Nevada.)

Mr. Fuller, whose birth occurred in Lawrence county, O., February 10, 1818, was the third child of fourteen children born of the marriage of Sylvester and Sarah E. (Maginnis) Fuller, and he is one of the three who now survive.  His father was a native of Providence, R. I., and his grandfather, whose name was also Sylvester, served as a captain in the Revolutionary War under Washington.  His long and faithful career lasted throughout the entire war and once at Long Island he was wounded.  Subsequently he became a prominent merchant and ship-owner at Providence, accumulating a large competence, and besides this was extensively engaged in land enterprises in Ohio, in an early day of the history of that territory.  His son, the father of the subject of this sketch, was only ten years old when taken to Ohio, and there he remained until moving to what is now West Virginia.  Of his large family of children all grew to maturity.  Young Sylvester was brought up to a farm experience and when young attended the few subscription schools then to be found in Virginia, afterwards supplementing this course with three or four terms' attendance at schools in Ohio.  This, however, was not all his education, for by self application in later years he has become a man of good general information.  In may, 1853, Mr. Fuller moved to Carroll county, Mo., and entered a large tract of land, but during the following eight years he carried on a lumber business.  Upon being burned out by the militia in 1862 he decided to locate in Vernon county, and this has since been  his home.  He has been married four times.  December 1, 1847, Miss Elizabeth Payne became his wife, but she died October 8, 1852, leaving three children:  Cornelia, wife of Willis Ellis, and Oliver B. are living and Willie is deceased.  March 4, 1853, Mr. Fuller married Sarah H. Fuller, and some time after her death, which occurred June 17, 1854, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Frances R. Jones, daughter of Noah Caton.  At her death November 7, 1873, she left the following family of children:  Jasper A., now dead; Chester C., a farmer in Holt county; Ella P., wife of Robert C. Craig; George N., Emma R., and an infant not now living.  March 17, 1875, Mr. F. married his present wife, Mrs. Celia Summers, daughter of Jesse Summers, one of the very old settlers in Vernon county.  Politically Mr. Fuller is a Democrat and as such has held numerous positions of honor and trust.  He was justice of the peace several years in Carroll county and after coming here was elected one of the county judges, his personal popularity and knowledge of legal proceedings soon causing him to be made president; in this capacity he served six years.  He is well known throughout the country and enjoys wide confidence and esteem.  His valuable and pleasant home four miles north of Nevada is well improved, his orchard of apple, peach, plum and pear trees being one of the best in the county.
