CHARLES E. FOSTER
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 640: Charles E. Foster (Photographer, Nevada). It was in 1874, when only about 17 years of age, that Mr. Foster commenced learning the art of photography, a calling to which he has since devoted his time and attention almost exclusively. And though still a young man, he has so applied himself to every detail of his adopted profession, thoroughly studying and practicing himself in his work, that a gratifying reputation as an artist has been conceded him. And this is said without any attempt at flattery. His work speaks for his ability and familiarity with his art. Born in Johnson county, Mo., November 1, 1857, Mr. Foster was the son of Robert L. and Mary E. Foster, née Holloway, both of whom are still living. The former is at present a merchant of Harrisonville, Cass county; the mother was a daughter of Thomas Holloway, the oldest resident of Cass county. Charles E. was the eldest of four children. He was reared in Cass county, and, indeed, began to learn the art of photography even before the time above mentioned, for he grew up to a knowledge of it, opening a studio when only 17 years old at Harrisonville. Since 1883 he has been a resident of Vernon county – of Nevada – and here he has long had a large share of the patronage accorded photography. The class of work which he turns out is unexcelled and it has been an aim with him always to study to please the wants of his customers. In 1880 Mr. Foster was married to Miss Emma Trimble. She was born in Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. F. have three children: Elden, Robert and Pauline. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias. [Transcribed by Kay Harper] |
