RICHARD H. ESTES

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 465-466:

Richard H. Estes

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 36, Post-office, Eldorado Springs).

Richard H. Estes, or “Dick” as he is familiarly but respectfully known, the only child of B. B. and Elizabeth Estes, nee Hurn, owes his nativity to Saline county, Mo., where he was born September 24, 1840.  His father was a Virginian by birth, and his mother was born in this State, and in 1838 their marriage occurred.  When Richard was but two years old they moved to Linn county, settling in Linneus, where he continued to make his home until 1857, and from there he became located in Cedar county, his age then being about seventeen.  From that time on until 1861 he was variously employed in that vicinity, but upon the bursting of the storm of war, which had so long threatened the country, he enlisted with true Southern chivalry under Capt. Prowell, in Col. Walker’s Cedar county regiment, of Rains’ division, and took part in the battles of Carthage, Wilson’s Creek, Drywood, Lexington, etc., and under Coffee fought at Pea Ridge, where he had several narrow escapes; indeed he received a wound in the neck which incapacitated him for military duty, and accordingly he returned to Missouri, locating in Vernon county on the place which he now owns, containing 160 acres.  This farm is situated in an excellent agricultural region, convenient to water for stock purposes, and valuable in other directions, for underlying his land an abundance of coal has been found, while plenty of timber adds to his fuel supply.  A short distance from his residence splendid mineral springs have been discovered, and these, though as yet not analyzed, give evidence of their superior medicinal properties.  In fact, this homestead is all that one could desire, and in due time its true value will be appreciated.  Mr. Estes was married July 4, 1870, to Miss Mary Young, formerly from Virginia, where she was born May 25, 1854, the daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth (Chiddix) Young, both Virginians by birth.  Mr. and Mrs. E. have five children:  Romy D., born August 17, 1872; Walter Lee, born October 8, 1876; Robert R., born October 27, 1880; Powhatan, born June 3, 1882, and Inez, born August 18, 1885.  In politics Mr. Estes is Democratic.  He belongs to Eldorado Lodge No. 333, I. O. O. F.  Both he and his wife are recognized as kind, hospitable people, courteous and kind to all.
