STRAWTHER EADS

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 464

Strawther Eads

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 4, Post-office, Schell City).

As one of the native-born citizens of Missouri Mr. Eads deserves favorable notice in this volume, his residence of some sixty years within the limits of the State having rendered him well acquainted with its general history.  He was born in Gasconade county, Mo., March 3, 1825, of Kentucky parentage on the side of his father, William Eads.  The latter was born in 1780, and in 1820 married Miss Rebecca Robinson, whose birth occurred in South Carolina in 1790.  Their children were Polly, Cyrena and Strawther, born in Gasconade county, Mo., and Alcy and Louisa, born in Sangamon county, Ill.  From 1820 until 1825 Mr. Eads lived in Gasconade county, Mo., then moving to Sangamon county, Ill, from whence, in 1846, he went to Des Moines county, Ia., and there died.  Strawther was brought up in Sangamon county and there received his education and on April 16, 1846, he was married to Miss Martha A. Dodds, of that county, born November 22, 1826, daughter of Joseph and Martha (Drennan) Dodds, originally from South Carolina, the former born May 18, 1785, and the latter May 18, 1793.  Upon leaving Illinois Mr. Eads located six miles north of Carrollton, Carroll county, Mo., remained one year, then returned to Sangamon county, and three years later, or in 1870, bought and moved upon a farm in Bates county, Mo., which he cultivated until the fall of 1881.  Since that time he has been a resident of Vernon county, his landed estate embracing 160 acres situated in sections 3 and 4.  To this he is giving his undivided attention with satisfactory results.  He and his wife have six children, whose names and dates of birth are, Nancy E., February 28, 1847; Mary E., December 9, 1848; Rebecca J., March 6, 1851; William A., referred to below; Finis E., April 15, 1858, and Martha A., December 1, 1860.  Politically Mr. Eads is now a Republican and with his wife belongs to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, though having demitted from his old lodge in Illinois.  William A. Eads, his eldest son, was born in Des Moines county, Ia., September 14, 1855, and February 26, 1880, was married in Bates County, Mo., to Miss Dora Cooper, of Harrisonville, Cass county.  Her parents, James M. and Kate Cooper, nee Gentry, were Kentuckians by birth.  Mr. and Mrs. William Eads have two children:  Maude Ethel, born February 18, 1882, and William Ira, born April 8, 1886.  Mr. E. came to this county in November, 1881, and at this time he is successfully engaged in the cultivation of his farm which lies just adjoining that of his father.  His wife’s father was born June 7, 1822, and her mother April 9, 1826.
