J. H. Eacott

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 36, Post-office Eldorado Springs).

     Mr. Eacott has not been located as long within the limits of Vernon county as many referred to in this volume, but already he is rapidly proving himself thorough in his farming operations and an agriculturist who is bound to succeed.  His birth occurred September 11, 1840, in Westmoreland county, Pa., his parents also being natives of the Keystone State.  William Eacott, the father, was born in 1812, and on June 16, 1832, was united in marriage with Miss Jane Harr, whose natal day was in 1815.  The children given them were Kate C. E., born in 1837; Thomas A., born in 1839; J. H., already spoken of; C. A., born in 1842, and Mollie C., born in 1845.  In 1844 the senior Eacott with his family left the State of their birth and located in Platte county, Mo., where he remained until 1850, during this time having charge of the Government harness shops at Ft. Leavenworth; the year 1847 was passed at that place.  In 1850 he died at Parkville, Mo., after a useful and well-spent life.  Two years later his widow moved to Jackson county, Mo., two miles east of Kansas City, where J. H. was principally reared and received the greatest part of his education.  Here also his mother was again married, to Hardin Steele, who was born December 25, 1800, in Montgomery county, Ky.  He came to this county in 1837 and on November 8, 1876, died, his wife surviving until she, too, was called away at Lee’s Summit, October 8, 1885.  Three children, Alvin, Hardin and Isaac, resulted from this union.  The subject of this sketch continued to reside in Jackson county for a number of years, occupied up to the war in farming, but after that he carried on a harness shop at Kansas City some little time.  Three years were also spent in Texas.  January 8, 1886, Mr. Eacott removed from Jackson county, Mo., to Eldorado Springs, from whence, after a residence of about three months, he moved to his present place, his land being in sections 35 and 36, where he owns 100 acres, a considerable portion of which is in cultivation and all is receiving his earnest and careful attention.  An orchard on the place contains seventy-five bearing apple trees.  November 16, 1872, Mr. E. was married to Miss T. R. Hannah, a native Missourian, born September 15, 1843.  They have had three children, Katie and Willie, who died in Texas, and J. H., Jr., born April 3, 1875.  In politics Mr. Eacott is a Democrat.
