E. B. Dixon

(Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 25, Post-office, Sandstone).

The subject of this sketch is deserving of special mention in the present volume, for he is a representative of a family whose members are widely and favorably known in this and other portions of the county.  Originally they are of Scotch ancestry and a relationship is discernible between them and the Stuart family of historic fame.  Levi Dixon, the father of E. B., said to be the oldest person in Vernon county, but a man remarkably preserved in years and general health, was born in Halifax county, Va., October 20, 1800, and is now in his eighty-sixth year.  He grew up as a farmer, and when 22 years old was married to Miss Sally W. Bolton, whose birth occurred in Pierson county, N. C., in 1804, and who at the time of her marriage was 18 years old.  Subsequently Mr. Dixon left his native State and moved to North Carolina, from whence he went to Cole county, Mo., and while there he lived upon one farm for 43 years.  His next location was in this county and he now makes his home with his son.  He has lived to see three generations of his descendants, his own immediate family having numbered ten children.  He is a member of the Old School Presbyterian Church and also belongs to the Grange.  His worthy wife, the companion of his many years, died in 1877, sincerely mourned by all who knew her.  She was also a Presbyterian in religious belief and brought up her children in that faith.  E. B. Dixon was born in Cole county, Mo., December 15, 1842.  He was early made acquainted with agricultural pursuits and its various branches, and on May 5, 1861, was married to Miss Mary E. Fowler, second daughter of Judge Fowler.  She was born June 30, 1846, in Cole county, Mo., and was one of twelve children, six of whom are living.  To Mr. and Mrs. Dixon nine boys and seven girls have been born, but only eight of these children survive.  The eldest daughter, Anna Lee, was married on the 27^th day of February, 1884.  During the late war Mr. D. was in the Confederate army, in Co. B, 1^st Missouri cavalry, and participated in the battles of Carthage, Wilson’s Creek and Dug Springs; he was once captured and released soon after being taken to Rolla.  An item of interest that should, perhaps, have been mentioned before is that his grandfather, Edmond Dixon, who was born January 3, 1753, was a volunteer in the Revolutionary War and at one time was a captain of militia.  Mr. Dixon is now improving and managing his farm in a manner which only comes of long experience and thorough knowledge of his business.
