JAMES L. DICKSON
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 865: James L. Dickson (Farmer, Section 4, Post-office, Montevallo). Mr. Dickson has had a successful experience in the affairs of agricultural labor during life, and is now in possession of a comfortable homestead of 160 acres, which, though it may not be as large as other tracts in the county which might be mentioned, is properly cared for and cultivated, and with the result that substantial returns are had for the amount of labor bestowed upon it. The improvements upon this place are neat and convenient and such as are most necessary. Mr. Dickson is a Missourian both by birth and bringing up, having been born in Cooper county, August 1, 1831, from whence he removed to Audrain county in 1855, living there until his removal to this county in 1866. George Dickson, his father, was born in Mercer county, Ky., in 1799. When 18 years old, or in 1817 he moved to Missouri, and finally in 1840, settled in Monroe county. Later on Audrain county became his home, about 1856, and from there he went to Saline county in 1866, his death occurring in 1844 [1884?] at the advanced age of almost eighty-six years. He was twice married; first to Miss Nancy Calvert, of Cooper county, daughter of John Calvert, an early settler of that locality; of this union two children were born, James L. being the youngest and only son. Mrs. Dickson died in 1834. In 1836, Mr. Dickson married Miss Prudence Simpson, who bore him six children that grew to maturity. From a child the subject of this sketch has been familiar with farming in its different phases. Since residing here he has closely adhered to this calling and, as has been said, has made of it a success. In 1859, he married Miss Mary H. Tally, originally from Audrain county, Mo., daughter of Daniel Wilson Tally. They have a family of seven children: Sarah E., wife of John T. Campbell; Nancy A., wife of Tolliver Sumner; Woodford T., Annie L., Corda M., Henry S. and Josiah W. One is deceased. Mr. Dickson is a member of the Christian Church. He is now treasurer of his school district, taking a warm interest in educational matters. His orchard of five acres is a prominent feature of his place. [Transcribed by Becky Siple] |
