CHARLES H. CATON

Charles H. Caton, his wife Elizabeth Dorothy

and children, Fred, Bessie, and Elsie

Charles Caton was born July 30, 1853, the son of Hugh McDermid and Nancy Ann (Harvey) Caton. On November 21, 1878, he married Elizabeth Dorothy Thomas, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary J. (Mullins) Thomas. They had eight children, five dying in infancy. Fred Edmond Caton, was born February 1883, and married Caroline Conner. Orra Lee Caton was born August 2, 1885 and died November 10, 1886. Vessie A. Caton was born September 15, 1887 and died February 21, 1888. May Caton was born about 1888 and died April 12, 1889. Eva Caton was born about 1890 and died January 11, 1891. Elsie Virgie Caton was born November 27, 1892, and she married Edward Amos Selim on July 29, 1917. Bessie Gertrude Caton was born October 20, 1895 and married 1) Charles Maletz; 2) Leland Haines; and 3) David Pugh. She died August 27, 1968. A fifth child also died in infancy.

Charles and “Aunt Lizzie,” as she was lovingly known by her many friends, lived and farmed in Drywood Township. They were honest, hard-working people and attended church regularly. Charles Caton died December 1, 1915. Aunt Lizzie, who was noted for having such beautiful dishes, remained on the family farm for several years. When the time came for her to move to her daughter and son-in-law’s home near Moundville, her beautiful dishes were carefully packed in two large tubs. Because there were so many items to transport, two trips had to be made. When the family returned for the second large tub of dishes, they sadly discovered that the tub of dishes had been stolen.

Elizabeth Dorothy Thomas Caton lived the remainder of her years with her devoted daughter and family, Edward and Elsie Selim, and she passed away on February 26, 1942.
