JOHN T. CAMPBELL
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 863: JOHN T. CAMPBELL (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Section 3, Post-office, Montevallo). John T. Campbell, conceded by all to be one of the substantial, progressive and influential agriculturists of this township, is a Virginian by birth, and by bringing up and practical experience a thorough farmer. He was born July 25, 1852. John Campbell, his father, first saw the light in North Carolina, December 11, 1825, but when young removed to Virginia, where he was reared. December 24, 1846, he married Miss Sarah E. Clendening, originally from the same State as himself. In 1855, when John T. was but three years old, they removed from the Old Dominion to Vernon county, Mo., where the father pursued his chosen avocation for some time. He was a hard working man, economical and energetic, but was twice broken up by Texas fever destroying his cattle. But not to be discouraged he rose above these misfortunes. During the war he suffered severely in the loss of everything he had except his land, and for a long time before leaving in 1863 was the only man left in his vicinity. In one day he dug three graves and buried three inoffensive citizens, who had been murdered by Morton's militia. He died July 16, 1873, leaving besides his widow four children: Mary A., now Mrs. John Long; John. T., Sallie, now Mrs. John Sturmer, and Joseph A. John T. has had a life-long acquaintance with the details of farming and the stock business. He is now the owner of 460 acres of land, well improved, and is now managing it as to secure excellent returns. His familiarity with this calling and the progressive spirit shown in all his operations have won for him a wide circle of friends, who are constantly profiting by the example thus shown them. November 9, 1875, Mr. Campbell was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Dickson who was born in Audrain county, Mo. They have a family of five children: Minnie E., Linnie , Oliver F., Enola M. and Claudie G. Mr. Campbell is warmly interested in educational matters and at this time is a member of the school board.
