LUCIAN BERRY

From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 587:

Lucian Berry

(Post-Office, Nevada).

He whose name heads this sketch is one of the oldest living residents of Vernon County, and though past the age of 85 years is well preserved in mind and body, and more active than many who have not yet reached half of his years. He was born in Washington County, Pa., February 22, 1801, of Pennsylvania parentage, his father, Samuel Berry, and his mother, formerly Hannah Litton, also being natives of that state. The former was a farmer by calling but took part in the famous whisky insurrection of 1794. Lucian was one of a family of nine children, only three of whom now survive. When young he moved to Hamilton County, O., from whence in 1825 he went to Scott County, Ill., there engaging in the practice of medicine, which profession he had previously studied, though he was brought up a farmer. In 1870 he engaged in mercantile pursuits and carried on a successful business for some time, but of late years he has been somewhat retired from the active and laborious duties of every-day life, being in a position to enjoy the fruits of his industry. His place embraces 60 acres adjoining the town site, on which is now being erected an excellent dwelling; but in addition to this he is the owner of 300 or 400 acres of land, none of which is over three miles from Nevada. In 1825 Mr. Berry was married to Miss Emma Lucy Kelly, originally from Rutherford County, N.C. This union was blessed with the following children: Mary A., wife of George Ritchey, of Illinois; Julia, now Mrs. Calvin Bennett, of Fort Scott; Martha, who married Alonzo Bennett; Lillie, wife of James M. Riggs, now in congress; Belle, wife of Dr. C. A. Rockwood; and William C. Two children are deceased.
