JOHN L. BEAGLES
From the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, p. 620-621: John L. Beagles (Of the firm of Penn & Beagles, Dealers in Hardware, Stoves and House Furnishing Goods, Nevada). Perhaps the newest addition to the business interests of Nevada is the hardware house of Penn & Beagles, which was established during the latter part of 1886. Though in operation but a short time, it requires no gift of prophecy to predict that its future is destined to be successful, for both members of the firm are men upon whom it will do to rely, and the stock carried is such as meets the wants and demands of their many customers. Already a liberal patronage has been accorded them and they are certainly starting out under favorable circumstances. Mr. Beagles is a son of one not unknown to the citizens of Nevada--John J. Beagles, a prominent contractor of this place, and who has for many years lived here. The wife of the latter was before her marriage Miss Salina D. Johnson, of Virginia nativity, and she became the mother of eight children, of whom the subject of this sketch was the third child. His birth occurred in Linn county, Mo., June 23, 1954, and in that locality he grew up until 1860, when he removed to Audrain county. There he was taught farming at first, but subsequently a desire for mechanical pursuits led to his learning the carpenter's trade, which he followed during the winter months until 1875. From that time on until 1886 he was steadily engaged in attending to the duties of his adopted calling, but since then, as stated, his present business has occupied his attention. The stock of goods carried in this house embraces a complete line of shelf hardware, cutlery, stoves, house furnishing goods, etc., and compares favorably with any stock of average size in towns outside of the larger cities. Mr. Beagles has been twice married; first, April 12, 1877, to Miss Josie Blue, of Audrain county, Mo., who died in 1878, leaving one child, Waleta Josephine. October 5, 1881, Mr. B. married Miss Allie M. Canterbury, a native of Illinois. They have four children: Ola, Callie, Boyd and an infant. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. |
