Texas County recorded her first vote for President in 1848, when 82 votes were given to Zachary Taylor, Whig, and 185 to Louis Cass, Democrat; in 1852 Scott received 95 and Pierce 167; in 1856 the Know-Nothings polled 91 votes for Fillmore and 479 for Buchanan, while in 1860 the Douglas Democrats gave 61 votes to their leader, the Breckinridge Democrats 511, the Bell Unionists 194 and the Lincoln Republicans 6. In 1864 Lincoln received 37 votes and McClellan 10. Four years after Grant was given 202 and Seymour 99. In 1872 Horace Greeley received 838 and Grant 481 votes; in 1876 Tilden received 1,144, Hayes 563 and Cooper 1. The elections of 1880 show 1,250 votes for Hancock, 477 for Garfield and 285 for Weaver, and of 1884, 1,652 for Cleveland and 970 for Blaine. The elections of 1888 show 1,782 votes for John A. Hockaday, representing Cleveland in this district; 1,161 for Ellis G. Evans, representing Harrison; 12 for S. R. Reese, representing the Prohibition candidate, and 335 for Isaac Frazier, the elector on the Union Labor ticket.

Local Option Election - The election to settle the question of selling or not selling intoxicating drinks was voted upon December 20, 1887, with the following result: Boone, 37 for, 5 contra; Burdine, 125 for, 73 contra; Clinton, 28 for, 32 contra; Texas, 58 for, 72 contra; Current, 32 for, 1 contra; Cass, 72 for, 27 contra; Jackson, 75 for, 17 contra; Lynch, 83 for, 2 contra; Morris, 66 for, 16 contra; Ozark, 29 for, 15 contra; Piney, 258 for, 73 contra; Pierce, 41 for; Roubidoux, 92 for, 24 contra; Sherrill, 101 for, 186 contra; Upton, 9 for, 13 contra. The total vote for the sale of intoxicants was 1,193 and against, 556, showing a clear majority of 637.
