Charles E. Peter
From the 1889 Goodspeed History
Charles E. Peter, representing the Western Land & Cattle Company, of Kansas City and London, England, was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, April 21, 1863, and is the son of Henry T. and Elizabeth (Peter) Peter, natives of Scotland, and cousins. The father died in his native country in March, 1886, when seventy-nine years of age, but the mother is still living, and is fifty-seven years of age. Both were members of the Scotch Episcopal Church. The father was a manufacturer of linen cloth on an extensive scale, his being one of the oldest establishments of the kind in Scotland. There were born to their marriage four children, three now living, and Charles E. being the youngest. He received his education at Dollar Academy and Edinburgh, and soon afterward served a five years’ apprenticeship as engineer, in the foundry at home. Later he went to Dundee, then to London, where he worked for the “P. & O.” Steamship Company, in the capacity of engineer, for six months. He then went home soon after, and in February, 1885, he came to the United States, locating in Texas County, where he took charge of the property belonging to the Western Land & Cattle Company. Mr. Peter is a Democrat in politics, is a citizen of the United States, and intends to make his country his home. In connection with managing the property of the Western Land & Cattle Company Mr. Peter is also engaged in farming on an extensive scale.
