L. A. Cochrane, dealer in hardware, was born in Jefferson County, Ill., March 1, 1849, being the son of John and Margaret (Roberson) Cochrane, and grandson of John Cochrane, Sr., who was a native of South Carolina, and whose father was a native of Scotland, and a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Margaret (Roberson) Cochrane was a native of Georgia, and the daughter of Joshua Roberson. L. A. Cochrane was one of a family of two sons and two daughters. He was reared in Illinois, and obtained a good education in the public schools of Jefferson County, Ill., supplementing it with academic training at Spring Garden Academy, of Jefferson County. He then taught school for three years, read medicine, and entered the Rush Medical College, of Chicago, Ill. He practiced first in Clay and Franklin Counties, and at Eureka Springs, but abandoned this profession at that place to embark in manufacturing there, and afterward at Winona Springs, Ark. In May, 1875, he came to Cabool, and has been identified with the manufacturing interests of the county since. In 1887 he opened a branch store at Winona, Mo. He was married in New Burnside, Ill., to Miss Mary E. Goode, a native of Kentucky, and to them have been born two sons: Victor Hugo and Leroy. Mrs. Cochrane is a member of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cochrane is an Odd Fellow, Treasurer of Cabool Lodge No. 433; has served on the school board of Cabool, and has built and improved property here. |
