John S. Cameron of Texas County, Missouri

John S. Cameron, principal of the Licking schools, and one of the prominent educators of Texas County, Mo., was born in the Grampian Hills of Scotland, July 1, 1848. He was reared and educated in the old country, where he took an academic course, and his boyhood days were passed on his father's farm. In 1869 he and his parents immigrated to America, and located near Licking, where the father died at the age of seventy, but the mother is still living, and is seventy-six years of age. In their family were eleven children, seven of whom are living. John S. Cameron, soon after coming to this country, began teaching, which profession he has continued since, nine terms in succession being taught in one district. In 1883 he was chosen county school commissioner of Texas County, which position he held for four years. He is now teaching his twenty-first term in the public schools, having been principal of Licking schools three years. In connection with his profession he is interested in farming, and is the owner of 236 acres of good land. In 1877 he wedded Miss Emma H. Barnes, a native of Texas County, and by her became the father of three children: Rosabella, Ewan J. and Eva E. Mr. Cameron is one of the oldest and most successful educators in Texas County. He is a Democrat in politics, is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and both he and Mrs. Cameron are members of the Baptist Church.
