Virgin Bluff is a perpendicular rock formation high
above Table Rock Lake in Stone County, Mo.
It is 1000 feet long and rises some 300 feet high.
The James River once ran underneath the cliff in the valley below. This
site is near Cape Fair, Missouri.
In the 16th century Delaware Indian tribes inhabited
the area. Other tribes such as the Choctaw, Otto, Osage, Seneca, Chickasaw,
and the Cherokee also called this country their home.
When Desoto, and his party, reached the area they
made friends with the Indian tribes. Legend says that an Indian Chief refused
to let his Princess daughter marry one of Desoto’s men. Whereby, she threw
herself from the top of the high cliff.
During a certain season of the year, when the waters
are high and the leaves have begun to bathe the top of the mountain in
green, one can hear the death song of the Indian Princess under the bluff
where she went to her death for the love of a Spaniard.
