John is the son of William K. Berry and Malinda Jane (Lane) Berry.

Matilda is daughter of Josiah Holloway and Sarah (Forshee) Holloway of Tennessee.

According to Janet Southall: "My grandmother said Matilda Susan was blind for many years.  It must have not been too much impediment, she raised eleven children!"
