NICKERSON LOG CABIN
(Photo courtesy of Richard White - Feb. 2000)

One of the oldest landmarks in Stone County is the Nickerson log cabin in Kimberling City.  The photograph was taken by Richard White who has also researched the history of the cabin.

A brief history as told to Richard by Birchie White (grandson of Joshua Nickerson) and Dawna Vicars (grandaughter of Arthur and Viola Crabtree) follows:

"Sometime before the Civil War, Isaac Nickerson and one or more of his sons built the cabin for shelter during hunting and trapping trips into the Ozark Mountains. Although the cabin was built by the Nickersons, many hunters used it. Sometime around 1877, Joshua Nickerson, Civil War veteran and son of Isaac Nickerson, moved his family to Stone County. The cabin was occupied so Joshua and family settled in a nearby cabin. Many families have stayed in the Nickerson cabin over the years.
The little cabin that sits on the wilderness road has survived the Civil War, the depression, the construction of the old highway 13 and the new, a nearby canning factory, many families and even cattle living inside it, the formation of Kimberling City and the damming of the White River, a real estate office addition, a facelift for the American Bicentenial and thousands of interested tourists."
