JOHN MILES
(Photo and story courtesy of Lowell Lux)

John Miles was born June 1, 1844 in Osage County, Missouri.  He died February 7, 1907 in  Myrtle Creek, Oregon. The photo above was taken the day he mustered out of the Union Army as Sgt., Co. E., 1st Arkansas Cavalry in August, 1865.  In April of that year he married Caroline King, the red-headed sister of his Captain, George Reeves King.  After the war they lived on the family farm near Cape Fair, and about 1870 went to Weatherford, Texas because his doctor felt the warmer climate would help a lung problem John had come down with during the war.

By 1880 they were on the move north, working their way.  My grandmother, Rose Miles Lux was born in December, 1882.  She lived to be 104 and was the source of many family stories.

They settled in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, where John farmed and worked in local mills until his death.  Caroline born September 11, 1847, died February 10, 1928 moved to Ft. Bidwell in extreme northeast California, and lived out her years with a bachelor son.
