George Wright was born on October 20, 1840 in the state line area of Greene County, Pennsylvania (possibly in Perry Township), and Monomgalia County, West Virginia. His parents were David and Susan Statler Wright. She was the daughter of John Statler.

When he was 21 years old, George enlisted in the West Virginia Cavalry Volunteers, (3rd Infantry) Company A, Sixth Regiment. He also served a term for another person. On August 26, 1863, he received a gunshot wound in his left shoulder during a raid at the battle of White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. The Testament he carried in his shirt pocket may have saved his life. This blood-stained Bible is now is the possession of a descendant.

On October 11, 1862, George married Mary Jane Henderson, the daughter of Alexander and Catherine Lemley Henderson. George and Mary Jane were both 22 years old and George was still in the service of his country. He was mustered out August 13, 1864 at Wheeling, West Virginia.

They lived for a time in Monongalia County, West Virginia and their third child, Lorenzo Boon, my grandfather, was born here in 1866. By 1867 they had decided to seek their fortune in Missouri where Mary Jane's sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Samuel West, had moved. George, Mary Jane and their three little children traveled by covered wagon to Stone County and bought a little farm in School (near Clever). Here they spent the rest of their days raising a large family of six daughters and seven sons. Many of the sons and one daughter married and moved to Illinois.

George died April 16, 1909 at the age of 68. Mary soon followed, on July 10, 1909 . They are both buried in the Wright Cemetery on their farm.
