ADALINE "ADDIE" GOLD
By Floyd Chamberlain, grandson of Addie Gold

Addie Ines Gold was born November 25, 1885 and died March 26, 1968.  She married John Chamberlain.  He was born October 12, 1880 at Stella, Missouri and died March 15, 1946 at his home near Stella.  He was the son of James K. Chamberlin and Margaret (Pogue) Chamberlin.  John changed the spelling of Chamberlin to Chamberlain for unknown reasons.

Addie and John were married March 7, 1906 at the Liberty Methodist Church by B. C. Phillips, Minister of the Gospel.   Addie lived in the Cartmell area and belonged to the Methodist Church there.

John and Addie had five sons:  James Russell, Francis Melvin, Simon Leonard, Clarence Elbert, and Guy David Chamberlain.  These boys were quite a group and would visit  their cousin Gladwyn Gold and have a "big time” running back and forth to each others homes according to Gladwyn.  They had a favorite dog called "Sport."  Addie always tried to keep in touch with her five sons after they grew up and moved away.  Writing was difficult for her, but grandson Floyd Chamberlain remembers her letters arriving regularly until she died.

John's and Addie's Bible is in the possession of Floyd Chamberlain.  In the Bible are some pages from another Bible that show Pogues and Reeds.  Also there is a page written by James K. Chamberlin that shows some of the Chamberlin genealogy. Addie recorded the time of day each of her five sons were born.

John Chamberlain was a farmer and a well driller in the Stella area.  Some of his wells are still in use.   Floyd Chamberlain has two pictures showing John at work with his well drilling equipment.  The well driller was run by an old steam engine with a long belt.  One picture shows five unidentified men at the site of the well and the other picture shows John and another man at a different well.

After John’s unexpected death from a stroke, Addie later married Lee West.   When she died in 1968 she was buried next to her first husband John and two sons Frances Melvin and Simon Leonard in the Macedonia Cemetery near Stella.  Other Chamberlains buried in Macedonia Cemetery but have no grave markers are John's parents and grandfather who was also named John.

James Russell was born November 30, 1909 near Stella and grew up with his four brothers in the Stella area.  He used his middle name instead of his first name.  He first married Faye Davis.  They divorced and there were no children from this marriage.  Second he married Gertrude Hawk from Newtonia, MO on October 23, 1937 at Neosho, MO.  He worked in the wheat fields of Kansas and also drove a cream truck in the Stella area.  In the early 1940's they moved to Idaho where he worked in the timber.  They had a son Floyd who was born January 1, 1939 in St. Johns, Kansas where they were working in the wheat fields, and a daughter Mary who was born February 17, 1952 in Orofino, Idaho.  Floyd now lives in Portland, Oregon and Mary lives in Woodburn, Oregon.  Russell died in a car accident January 6, 1970 near Greer, Idaho and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery at Orofino, Idaho.  His wife Gertrude died in Woodburn, Oregon April 25, 1982 and is buried near Woodburn, OR.
