OBITUARIES

Henry C. Adair - Age 94, of Van Buren, Missouri, died Sunday, March 22, 1963, of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Doctors Hospital in Poplar Bluff.  Mr. Adair was a former school teacher and county judge of Shannon County. He had been a resident of Carter County for five years. He was born July 13, 1869 in Shannon County, and was married in 1893 to Henrie Layton, who died in 1936. In 1961 he was married to Mrs. Della Lehman of Van Buren, who survives. Other survivors include one son, Wilbur Adair of Vinita, Oklahoma, and five daughters, Mrs. Vera McClintock of Van Buren, Mrs. Thela Bell of Hayti, Mrs. Oneita Heger of Los Angeles, Thelma Singler of St. Louis and Mrs. Dixie Palmer of Wichita, Kansas, 13 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, J.S. Adair of Walters, Oklahoma, and J.W. Adair of Oklahoma City.  Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Van Buren, Tuesday, March 24, with Rev. Earl Kearbey officiating. Burial was in the Winona [Baptist Hill] Cemetery with graveside rites by the Odd Fellows Lodge. - McSpadden Funeral Service.

Dwain 'Dave' Bales - Age 91, of Kingtown Road Lenoir, North Carolina, died Monday, November 23, 1998 at Wilkes Regional Hospital. Born on October 15, 1907, in Carter County, Missouri, he was the son of the late Lewis Bales and Florence Rector Bales. In addition to his two parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers. Before retiring to North Carolina, he was a long time resident of Winona, Missouri. Survivors are his wife Blanch Arnold Bales; seven daughters:  Thelma Tammy Bales Rayle of Huntsville, AL., Louise Bales Garig of Fenton, MO; Jeanne Bales Enloe of Lenoir, NC, Mabel Bales Petry of Granite Falls, NC, Sandra Bales Grant of Hudson, NC, Dorothy Bales Mugrage of Morganton, NC, Jonice Bales Bosch of Granite Falls, NC, and two sons, James Bales of Lenoir, NC, and Dwain Lee Bales of Hudson, NC, brother Eugene Bales of Fremont, MO, sister Elsie Sanders of East St. Louis, IL, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A private graveside service was held at 2:00 PM on November 25 at the family cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Hensley  officiating. Memorials may be made to the Cadwell Community College and Technical Institute Foundation, PO Box 600, Lenoir, NC 28645 or the Lenoir Church of God, 1786 Hickory Blvd. NC 28645. Pendry's Funeral Home in Lenoir was in charge of the arrangements. 

Johnabell Butner Black - Age 78 years, departed this life on Monday evening, April 17, 2000, at Poplar Bluff, MO. She was born Dec. 28, 1921, near Winona, MO, daughter of the late Raymond and Grace (Seaman) Butner. She was baptized at a young age in the Methodist Church at Eminence, MO. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her later years she enjoyed playing golf. She was a life long resident of Shannon and Cater counties and had lived for the past 50 years in Van Buren, MO. On Jan. 19, 1940, she was united in marriage to Loyd Black at Winona, MO. He preceded her in death on Sept. 6, 1999. She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry Dean Black in 1984, and two sisters, Samme Roberts and Jean Burkhart. Surviving are eight children, Charolette and her husband Ron Harman of Sanibel, FL, Jan and her husband John Stock of St. Charles, Carolyn Kiser of Texas, Nancy and her husband Ron Cozort of Poplar Bluff, MO, Van Black of Poplar Bluff, Alan Black and his wife Sheila of Poplar Bluff, Kent Black of Van Buren and Roxie and her husband Wendel Clark of Van Buren; 10 grandchildren, Guien Black, Sheri Kroephl, Kevin Stock, Angela Poe, Robert Farrington, Chad Marret, Chrisit Marret, Stacy Black, Russell Black and Dustin Epperson; five great-grandchildren; and many friends who will mourn her passing. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2000, at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Elaine Burrows officiating. Burial will be in Van Buren City Cemetery.

Mary Jane Bell Bland - Daughter of Joe Bell & Lona Mae Dawson. She was born September 14, 1927 in Kelly Twp Carter Co MO. Mary passed away on April 18, 1990. Mary was united in marriage to Robert 'J. R.' Bland in 1946 and to this union eight children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents and several siblings. She is survived by her husband, J. R. Bland, and children, Caroline Jewel Howell, Bobby Bland, Maye L. Wright, Shirley Jean Barkley, Sharon Wheeler, Roger, David and Wayland Bland, several grandchildren and many relatives and friends. Mary was laid to rest at Mount Zion Cemetery Winona Shannon Co MO. 

GRACE SEAMAN BUTNER
06 Feb 1891 - 18 May 1957

Mrs. Grace Butner Dies.
Mrs. Grace Butner of Willow Springs passed away last Saturday. Her death was caused by injuries she sustained in a fall at her home a few days previously. She was treated in a hospital, but to no avail. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Winona, her old home, Monday afternoon, with Rev. Earl Sigler giving the funeral sermon. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery.  Mrs. Butner was a daughter of the late Alonzo Seaman, a half-sister to Carl E. Seaman of Eminence and step-daughter of Mrs. Ida Seaman. She was the mother-in-law of George Roberts, formerly of Eminence. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved.  Mrs. Butner lived at Winona for years, but was living with her daughter, Mrs. Sammie Roberts, of Willow Springs since the death of her husband, Raymond.

Democrat, 30 May 1957 ~ GRACE BUTNER CROSSES THE BAR - Grace L. Seaman Butner passed away at the St. Francis Hospital, Mtn. View, Mo., at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 1957, from the effects of ulcers. She was the daughter of Martha and Alonzo Seaman, and was born at Winona, Mo., February 6, 1891. She was raised in a Christian home and at an early age united with the Presbyterian Church. Those who came in contact with her all through her life in both social and business relationships, reaped the benefit of this Christian life. She was united in marriage April 17, 1918, to Raymond S. Butner, who preceded her in death. To this union four girls were born: Samme Roberts, Willow Springs, MO.; Johnabell Black, Winona, Mo.; Jean Burkhart, Junction City, Ky.; one daughter died in infancy. She also leaves three sons-in-law: George Roberts, Loyd Black and Gene Burkhart; seven grandsons, seven granddaughters; one brother; four half-brothers, one half sister; and a step-mother; several nieces and a host of very dear friends, who will mourn her passing for years to come. Grace Butner was a character within herself. She was aggressively honest and did not tolerate dishonesty in any form. She asked no one to take over her share of the burden. She asked no succor, but fought her own battles, honestly, courageously, determinedly and held the wholesome respect of all who knew and dealt with her. She taught school in Shannon, Howell and Carter counties. The funeral was held in the Christian Church at Winona and she was laid to rest at the Mt. Zion Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Bockman of Winona. A large assemblage of neighbors and friends formed the funeral cortege attesting to the wonderfully high esteem in which Grace L. Butner and her family were held in the community where all her fruitful years were spent. A most useful life has ended; a family's strong protector has laid down the gauntlet and surrendered to the Grim Reaper; the final curtain in life's drama has fallen in the life of Grace L. Butner, and may her children and friends remember and emulate her many strong elements of character and attack the problems of life with the same degrees of honesty and fearlessness as did their mother.

RAYMOND S. BUTNER 31 Jan 1893 - 06 Jul 1947

RAYMOND BUTNER CROSSES THE BAR - Raymond S. Butner passed away at his farm home one mile east of Winona, at 6:30 a.m., Sunday, July 6th, 1947, from the effects of a heart attack, and succumbed within an hour. He was the son of Samuel S. and Elizabeth Butner, & was born January 31, 1893, in Cedar County, Missouri. He was reared in a Christian home and at the age of 14 years united with the Christian Church. Those who came in contact with him all through his life in both social and business relationship reaped the benefit of this Christian life. He was united in marriage April 17, 1918, to Grace Seaman. To this union four girls were born, Samme Roberts, Eminence, Mo., Johnabell Black, Alton, Mo., and Jean of the home. One daughter died in infancy. He also leaves two sons-in-law, Loyd Black and George Roberts, one grandson, three granddaughters, five sisters, Mrs. Ruby Sanders, St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Goldie Harder, Portland, Oregon, Mrs. N. B. George, Ellington, Mo., Mrs. Chas. Adams, Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. E.W. Sloan, Puxico, Mo.; one brother, Stone Butner, Enterprise, Oregon; several nieces and nephews, and a host of very dear friends who will mourn his passing for years to come. A large assemblage of neighbors and friends formed the funeral cortege attesting to the wonderfully high esteem in which Raymond S. Butner and his family were held in the community where all his fruitful years were spent. A most useful life has ended, a family's strong protector has laid down the gauntlet and surrendered to the Grim Reaper, the final curtain in life's drama has fallen in the life of Raymond Butner, and may his children and friends remember and emulate his many strong elements of character and attack the problems of life with the same degree of honesty and fearlessness as did their father. There are stars that go out in the darkness, but whose silvery light shineth on. There are roses whose perfume still lingers, when the blossoms are faded and gone. There are hearts full of light and of sweetness, when no longer their life current flows. Still their goodness lies on with the living like the souls of the star and the rose. Thus did Raymond live and die.

Samuel Sanford Butner - Born in Madison County, Kentucky Dec. 15, 1853, and died at Winona, Mo., April 10, 1915, age 62 years, 3 months and 10 days.  His first marriage was to Ellen Mann of Cedar County, Mo.  To this union there was born 3 children, Mrs. W.M. Hammer of Osawatomie, Kas., Mrs. C.L. Adams of Peru, Kas., and Mr. Stone Butner of Joseph, Oregon.  His second marriage was to Mrs. S.E. Franklin of Cedar Co., Mo., in 1890.  To this union was born 5 children, four of which are still living.  He leaves a wife and 9 children, 2 of which are step children, an aged mother and 3 brothers, as well as a host of friends to mourn his loss.  While the deceased never made an open confession of Christianity, yet his daily life would lead all who know him to believe he was leading a Christian life.  In the community in which he lived he has always been held in the highest esteem as a man of sterling honesty and a disposition to live up to the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would that others do unto you."  To his family he was always devoted, exhibiting the greatest parental love for his children and unquestionable devotion to his wife.  Our community joins with the family in mourning for one whom we have learned to love during the two and one half years he has been among us.  [The Shannon County Democrat, April 16, 1915]

Sarah Elizabeth Terry Butner   - Born March 29, 1859 in Bath County, Kentucky,  where she grew to womanhood.  In 1880 she was married to Owen W. Franklin.  Five children were born to this union.  Two died in infancy and another, a daughter, at the age of 24.  She was left a widow in 1888 and in 1890 was married to S.S. Butner, who was at the time the father of three small children.  She reared these children and five were born into the family.  These all survive except one which died in infancy, and a step-daughter.  She was again widowed in 1915. She was reared in a Christian home and at the early age of fourteen was baptized into Christ and remained faithful through the years.  She was always ready to do good in time of need.  She was often heard to remark that she considered her Christian parents her greatest blessing in life.  Her one greatest concern was to attend worship on Lord’s Day.  That she might be able to do this, in her late years, she left her home and the association of her children, moved to Mountain View among strangers where there is a Church of Christ. She has been in failing health for some time but suffered very little and only from infirmities of old age.  While the day was yet new, on August 2, 1941, at the home of a daughter her spirit very calmly and peacefully left its abode of clay and took its flight into the great beyond. Funeral services were conducted at the Church of Christ Sunday in Mountain View, Mo., under the direction of Burns & Sons of Willow Springs, Mo.  Bro. Huston Ferrel paid a very high tribute, to her Christian character and her service to mankind, spoke very ably and earnestly on the way of life eternal to those of us who remain. Her body was placed to rest in the Mt. Zion Cemetery near Winona, Mo., to await the resurrection. – Blessed are they who die in the Lord. The bereaved by her departure are her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, one sister, and a host of other relatives and friends. -One who knew and loved her.  NOTE: She was the daughter of Thomas Terry and Anna Eliza Gudgel Terry of Kentucky.  MO Death Cert.#31657 states county of birth as Owen Co KY.

Rose Elaine Atkins Case - Passed away May 2, 1999 of leukemia at Hospice Care Center in Longview WA. She was born Sep. 20, 1922 at Midco Carter Co MO to Lucy Kathleen Thomason Atkins and Chet F. Atkins. She was the granddaughter of John E. Thomason and Margaret O. Jones Thomason, affectionately known as Uncle John and Aunt Mag. She was also the granddaughter of William Atkins and Cynthia LaRue Atkins. Elaine was raised and went to school in the Rocky and Pleasant Site areas. Elaine was preceded in death by her husband John W. Case in 1976 and her only son James l. Marmon in 1997, parents and both sets of grandparents. Elaine is survived by two aunts, Marie Nash of Eminence and Nell Bradley of Kansas City, twin sister of James, her  son, Carol Marmon Johnston of Osceola, Michigan, Kathleen Ann Marmon Sableman of Grand Junction, Colorado, Sandy K. Taylor Names of Longview , Washington, Melissa Elaine Taylor Garrison of Eureka, California and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the local area. Elaine enjoyed tending to her garden, reading, her cat, 'Mama Mia', family and friends and her faith in God. Burial took place at Pleasant Site Cemetery next to her mother, sons and grandparents, the Thomasons.

Thomas Edward Coates - Born August 26, 1913 in Pueblo, Colorado to William and Adelaide Coates. On March 18, 1939 he and Helen Moss were united in marriage and to this union three children were born. Tom passed away on July 25, 1974, at Birch Tree, MO, at the age of 60 years and 11 months.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father and one brother, Samuel Coates. Surviving him are:  his wife, of the home; one daughter, Wendolyn Godsy, of Harvest, Alabama; Darryl Edward and Kenneth Wayne, of the state of Washington; one foster daughter, Inez Hadeen, of Everson, Washington; one brother John Coates, of Dewar, Oklahoma and 11 grandchildren. He was a member of the General Baptist Church in Van Buren, MO for 15 years. Tom will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. 

LEUTITIA BELL 'TISH' NORRIS COUNTS 27 Sep 1861 - 3 May 1913

Leutitia Bell Norris was born on September 27, 1861, in Aid Twp, Lawrence County, Ohio, the fifth child of Joseph Martin Norris & Mary 'Frances' Harrison Norris.  She was married in Carter County, Missouri in 1881 to Nicholas ‘Lace’ Counts. Five children were born to Lace and Tish: Fannie, married 1 Charles Warren; married 2 David McCall; Alonzo, married Rosa Randolph; Charles Albert, married Dessie Mae Brewster; Grant Jewel ‘ Gude’, married 1 Bertha Meade; 2 Bessie Della Dixon; and Flora Virginia, married David Dixon. The Counts family remained in the Shannon County area all their lives and Tish died there on May  3, 1913. Lace lived on until November 14, 1934. They are buried in Bethany Cemetery in Shannon County MO.

Bryan Lee Culpepper - Age 48, of Van Buren, was born December 30, 1961 in Kansas City, Missouri, and departed this life November 25, 2010 at his residence in Van Buren, Missouri. He had attained the age of 48 years, ten months, and twenty-six days. Bryan had made Van Buren his home since 1972. Bryan was intricately intertwined with the Ozarks. His artistic ability reflected that love of the area, as well as other cultures and regions. Children were naturally drawn to Bryan, and this was especially apparent through his interpretive efforts with the National Park Service. Bryan’s curiosity of the natural world kept him outdoors absorbing everything around him and he was never without a field guide. He had a passion for archaeology and Native American cultures. Bryan was the founder of the Carter County Historical Commission and established the Ozark Riverways Heritage Days at Big Springs through which he won the Freeman Tilden Award, the highest honor for a National Park Ranger. Bryan shared a special bond with his nieces and nephews. Whether walking through the woods, telling a joke, or drawing them into the history of their culture and natural surroundings, Bryan’s gentle spirit will forever be imprinted. For 28 years Bryan shared his life with Renata Coleman Culpepper who survives; he is also survived by his parents, Ray and Barbara Culpepper of Van Buren; one brother, Darrel Culpepper and his wife, Dana of Apex, NC; two sisters, Rebecca Hoffman and husband, Steven of Louisville, KY, Peggy Tarrence of Van Buren and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

Dorcas Irene Adier-Culpepper - Daughter of the late Noah P. and Dicie Ellen (Landis) Dale, was born January 27, 1926 in Hornersville, Missouri and departed this life March 7, 2013 in the Riverways Manor Nursing Home in Van Buren, Missouri. She had attained the age of eighty-seven years, one month and eleven days. Irene was a longtime resident of Van Buren, Missouri and had formerly resided in Dove Creek, Colorado. She was a cook and formerly worked for the Van Buren RI School District and also had cooked for several restaurants. Irene enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting, quilting and had enjoyed reading before her eyesight failed. On May 15, 1947 she was united in marriage to Harley Adier in Salem, Arkansas. He preceded her in death. In 1959 she was married to Joseph F. Culpepper in Van Buren, Missouri. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one son, Johnnie Dale Adier; three brothers, Homer Dale, Hershel Dale, and Donald Dale; two sisters, Dollie Wade and Ellen Reed and one grandchild. Survivors include two sons, Larry Adier and his wife, Charlene of Van Buren and Harley Doyle Adier and his wife, Wilma of Farmington; two brothers, Donnie Dale of Dove Creek, Col., and Joe Dale of Mountain View, Mo.; one sister, Darlene Southerland of Van Buren, Mo.; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. Visitation: 12:00 p.m. Saturday in the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, Missouri with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m. Clergy: Rev. Melba Duncan Burial: Mount Zion Cemetery in Winona, Missouri

Telsa Lorene 'Telsie' Ferguson Crouch - Born August 3, 1917 in St. Louis MO to Harvey O. Ferguson and Alice Ferguson. She passed away June 28, 2006 in Fremont MO at the age of 88 years. Telsa is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil Crouch, three sons Billy Crouch, Floyd Ray 'Jack' Crouch and Jim Crouch and one daughter Alice Enloe. Telsa is survived by seven children Harvey Crouch of Fremont MO; Elizabeth Vaughn and husband Wayne of Morrilton AR; Evelyn Schulte and husband Michael of St. Charles MO; Linda Haney of Fremont MO; Patricia Rives and husband William of St. Charles MO; Terry Crouch of Hazelwood MO and David Crouch and wife Brandi of Centralia MO; one brother Leonard Watson of Iowa; 28 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. Telsa will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services were held July 1, 2006 at Duncan Funeral Chapel in Mountain View MO with Jimmy Gilbert officiating. Interment was in the Old City Cemetery in Mountain View MO under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home.

ELSIE MAE NORRIS DIXON - Born October 21, 1900, daughter of Ulysses ‘Grant’ and Mary Frances (HAMPTON) NORRIS, and passed away January 29, 2002 at Van Buren Carter Co MO at the age of 101 years, 3 months and 8 days. She was united in marriage to David Allen DIXON on May 11, 1919 at Midco Carter Co MO. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1984. To this union six children were born, Everett ‘Micky’ DIXON, George DIXON, Evelyn SMITH, Frieda JONES, Marie ALLEY, and Sylvia MCDOWELL. Elsie was laid to rest beside her husband at Pleasant Site Cemetery in Fremont MO.

George William Dixon - Born March 25, 1933 at Buckeye Township in Shannon County, MO, the son of David Allen Dixon and Elsie Mae (Norris) Dixon. He passed away February 21, 2011 in Cape Girardeau, MO at the age of 77 years.  He was united in marriage to Maryjane Wyatt on April 20, 1955 in Winona, MO. George is preceded in death by his parents, David and Elsie Dixon; wife, Maryjane Dixon; two brothers, Esco Dixon and Eldon Dixon and four sisters, Virginia Lanche, Marie Alley, Evelyn Smith and Beulah Cleaver. He is survived by two sons, Robert Dixon and wife, Jennie, of Winona, MO and Melvin Havens of Hermitage, MO; one daughter, Sharon Tracy of Marshfield, MO; one brother, Everett ‘Micky’ Dixon and wife, Shirley, of Van Buren, MO; two sisters, Freda Jones and husband, Edward, of Fremont, MO and Sylvia McDowell and husband, Earl, of Mansfield, MO; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a host of many family and friends. George enjoyed fishing and hunting, but most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO with Rev. A.D. Cleaver officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Site Cemetery in Fremont, MO under the direction of Duncan Funeral Homes of Winona, MO. 

WILMA JEAN WAKEFIELD DIXON - DEATH NOTICE - Died Mar. 10, 2009. Visitation Thursday Evening at 6 PM with the Funeral Friday Morning at 11 am at McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, MO.  Obituary will appear in the next issue of the Current Wave. 

JOSEPH JACKSON 'J. J.' DONLEY - Born September 18, 1922 in Ripley Co MO. He entered into his Heavenly rest February 26, 2006 at Ste. Genevieve MO. He attended school at Fremont MO. He showed his patriotism in his country during World War II by joining the Navy; he served four years, during which time he was award seven Battle Stars. J. J. was employed by the CCC, helping to build McCormick Lake, roads, bridges and other projects throughout the Ozarks region. He married Katherine Ruth ‘Kay’ OSBORNE on March 23, 1951 in Butler Co MO. Their home was blessed with two sons, Kevin Jackson and Scott Albert. J. J. spent 41 years driving a truck, primarily for East Texas Motor Freight. He was presented with a diamond studded belt buckle for 3 million accident-free miles. He was an active member of Teamster’s Local 710, VFW, and the American Legion. He and Kay were faithful in their attendance of the alumni banquets held at Fremont and Van Buren. They never missed an OSBORNE family reunion since the first one was held in 1992. He was eager to go to church when he came to visit Ivan’s family, and enjoyed helping Shirley in the kitchen. We always knew that he loved us, and he knew that we loved him! We each have our own special memories, but we all agree that no matter what was going on in his life, he was always grinning from ear-to-ear. It makes us smile to remember! J. J. professed his faith in Christ as a young man, and was baptized in Big Barren Creek near his home. He frequently stated, “I’m ready to go whenever the Lord calls me Home!” He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay, and her parents, Winston and Beulah (WEAVER) OSBORNE; his parents, Joseph and Gladys (SMITH) DONLEY; two brothers, Bernell and Bob DONLEY; and a sister, Eloise KETCHERSIDE and her husband Sidney; grandsons Cole CHRISTIAN and Philip Joseph DONLEY, sons of Kevin and Vicky. He is survived by Kevin and Vicky DONLEY, Addieville IL, and their children, Pete and wife Jamie; Dawn and husband Mike; Paul, Amanda and Austin; grandchildren, Justine, Alexandria, Justin, Samantha, Ryan, Ethan, Isabella, Ashley, Kylie, Jared Philip and Katelyn. He is also survived by his son Scott, Bloomsdale MO, with whom he made his home, and Scott’s fiancé’, Susan JONES; his brothers, Jim ‘Pete’ and his wife Fern, Handy MO; Donnie and his wife Janet, Arnold MO; Bernell’s widow, Margie DONLEY, and Bob’s widow, Elma ‘Boogie’ DONLEY; Kay’s family, which includes her stepfather, Jack MUSCHA and his wife Shirley, Winona MO; and Jay OSBORNE and his wife Alta, Licking MO, and Kay’s sister Jo Ann and husband Harry BILLINGSLEY of Colorado. These weren’t ‘just family’, but friends that were dear to his heart. J. J. was respected and loved by all, including numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He would want us to thank and acknowledge his kind and caring neighbors, Joe and Myra GIBBS. Finally, we must remember his most faithful companion for several years, a Beagle Dog he called ‘Annie’. STEVE ALLEN ELLIOTT - Born April 4, 1955, at New Liberty, MO. the son of Alva Clive and Hazel Marie Johnson Elliott, and passed away March 16, 1990, in Oregon County, MO, at the age of 34 years. He was united in marriage to Sarah Moore Lindsey on May 3, 1986, at Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  To this union two children were born. He was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Edward; and one son, Joseph Steven Elliott. He is survived by his parents of Winona, MO; his wife, Sarah of the home in Winona; one son, Steve Alva of the home; one daughter, Ann Marie of the home; two step-sons, Theodore and Timothy Lindsey of Fort Smith, AR; three brothers, Kenneth of Fremont, MO; Melvin and Victor of Winona, MO; three sisters, Mary Jo Friend of Lone Dale MO; and Patsy Blunk and Phyllis Johnston, both of Winona, MO. Steve was saved and baptized in 1976. Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, 1990 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Rev. Mary Brown officiating.  Burial was in the Freeman Chapel Cemetery in Fremont under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

ALICE ANN CROUCH ENLOE - Born December 4, 1940 at Mountain View, Missouri the daughter of Cecil Dale Crouch and Telsa Lorene Ferguson Crouch. She passed away Friday, January 20, 2006 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Festus, Missouri at the age of 65 years. She was united in marriage to William Enloe in November, 1979. She is survived by her mother, Telsa Crouch of Fremont, Missouri; her husband Bill Enloe of Festus, Missouri; two sons, Kenneth Wells and wife Lisa of Bloomsdale, Missouri and Eric Enloe of Festus, Missouri; one daughter, Dionne Enloe of Festus, Missouri; six grandchildren, Kristin Wells, Stacy Wells, Sarah Wells, Erica Enloe, Jacob Enloe and Ashley Enloe; 2 great grandchildren, Jonathan Caby and Lilyan Nickole Largent; her brothers Harvey, Terry, David; her sisters Elizabeth Vaughn (Wayne), Evelyn Schulte and (Michael), Linda H. Haney, Patti Rives (Bill) and a host of nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. RUBY CHARLOTTA ‘MAXINE’ DREASLER FICKER - Born October 7, 1934 at Fremont Carter Co MO, the daughter of James Thomas Walter and Ethel (LANE) DREASLER. She departed this life on April 9, 1994, in Rolla Phelps Co MO, at the age of 59 years. She was united in marriage to James Jackson FICKER on January 30, 1954 at Salem Dent Co MO. To this union one son was born. She was preceded in death by her father, James DREASLER, in 1982. LILLIAN 'BEA' MCCARTY FISHER - Born September 26, 1926 at Van Buren, MO, the daughter of Arthur and Myrtle (CHRONISTER) MCCARTY. She passed away December 19, 2007 at Springfield, MO at the age of 81 years. She was united in marriage to Herman Lee FISHER on September 6, 1942, and to this union, six children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Myrtle MCCARTY; one son-in-law, Frankie ALLEN; five step- brothers and two step-sisters. She is survived by her husband, Herman Lee FISHER of Winona, MO; three sons, Harold Lee FISHER and wife, Linda, of Alma, AR; Lonnie Ray FISHER and wife, Patricia, of Van Buren, AR; and Eddie Dean FISHER and wife, Delores, of McAlester, OK; three daughters, Geneva 'Sis' ALLEN of Mountain View, MO, Leona Marie MARTIN and husband, Samuel 'Andy', of Winona, MO and Shelia Renee JOHNSON and husband, Brett, of Fremont, MO; one step-brother; fifteen grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Bea was saved at a young age and loved attending church. She loved crocheting and her rocking chair. She also collected miniature bells. Rev. Henry Elvis 'Hank' Foster - Son of the late Henry and Mabel (Payton) Foster, was born June 18, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas and departed this life September 15, 2008 in the Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri. He had attained the age of seventy-five years, two months and twenty-seven days. Rev. Hank and his wife, Barbara, resided on their farm in Birch Tree. He was formerly of Springfield, MO. He served as Pastor of the United Methodist Church in Van Buren since 2001. Rev. Hank worked in the Ministry for most of his life, and served as Pastor in numerous churches including St. Clair, Hermitage, Victoria, Mapaville, Moberly, Bloomfield and Springfield in Missouri, and in Bremen, Georgia. He was also a former branch manager at the Social Security Office in Union, MO, retiring after 21 years of service. Wherever Rev. Hank lived or worked, he was always involved in that community and its people. He was a member and Past President of the Van Buren Rotary and a Rotarian of the truest kind; he fostered the idea of service as a basis of worthy enterprise, insisted on high ethical standards in business and professions, and dignified each person’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. Rev. Hank was President of the Van Buren Ministerial Alliance, served on the Van Buren Nutrition Center Board, member and Past President of the Birch Tree Chamber of Commerce and numerous other worthy activities that helped improve the quality of life in his community. He enjoyed working on his farm and tending his cattle, so much so that he had named each of them. He also enjoyed Cardinal Baseball and attending auctions, but he especially loved spending time with his grandkids. In October of 1950, he married Avis Hendrix. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Jackie Foster and one son, Louis Lindley. On April 28, 1976, he was united in marriage to Barbara Moger. She survives of Birch Tree, MO. He is also survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Hank and Kay Foster, Jr. of Fouke, AR, Robert and Lisa Lindley of Las Vegas, NV, John and Christine Lindley of St. Clair and Steve and Heather Foster of Dexter; five daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Elbert Gee of Birch Tree, Gwen and Bob Bain of Fort Worth, TX, Shar and Bob Henry of Springfield, Linda Johnston and fiancé, Todd Sturgeon, of Van Buren, and Gaylyn and Mike Spanhanks of Fouke, AR; twenty-four grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. Visitation was 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2008 at McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, MO. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2008 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. FLOYD M. FOX - Born August 20, 1934 at Fremont, MO to Edgar and Sinia (Short) Fox. Floyd departed this life on March 4, 2009 at his home in Winona, MO. Floyd attained the age of 74 years, 7 months, and 16 days. Floyd attended school in Reynolds County. He was a cabinet maker by trade and spent most of his working years in Kansas City and St. Louis. In 1960 Floyd married Gracie Rector at Ellington, MO. They were together 48 years and to this union three sons were born. JAMES MARELL ‘BUD’ FRAZIER, JR. - Son of the late James Martell ‘Mart’ and Grace Rosella (HOLT) FRAZIER was born March 23, 1940 in Van Buren MO, and departed this life on February 25, 2006 at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield MO. He had attained the age of sixty five years, eleven months, two days. Although a resident of Springfield MO for the past several years, Bud lived most of his life in the Van Buren area. He was a 1958 graduate of the Carter Co R-I High School and continued his education in his insurance career, having received the professional designation of Charter Life Underwriter and Charter Financial Consultant from the American College in Bryn Mawr PA. He entered the U. S. Army in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1968, having served two years of active duty and four years in the Army Reserves. He was an insurance agent with the Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Company for twenty three years before a stroke forced early retirement in 1995. While with Farm Bureau he held the positions of Career Agent, Agency Manager, and was the Regional Sales Manager for the Southwest Quarter at the time of his retirement. Bud was a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren MO. He served on the Carter County R-I Board of Education for nine years, in the positions of Treasurer and Board President. He also served as Van Buren City Collector and City Clerk in the early 1970s. He was preceded in death by his previous wife, Donna (GOSSETT) FRAZIER; parents Mart and Grace FRAZIER, and three infant siblings. On March 9, 1989 he was united in marriage to Joyce Ann (WALLACE) BARNES. She survives of the home. He is also survived by two sons, Troy A. FRAZIER, Springfield MO, and Donald Joe BARNES, Jr., Wagoner OK; two daughters, Jodi SHAW, Sagamore Hills OH, and Holly SHAVER, Ozark MO; one brother, Don FRAZIER, Van Buren MO; one sister, Illa COOK, Poplar Bluff MO; nine grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. Kenneth Preston French - Son of Bertha Rosenburg Callahan and Homer Preston French was born July 25, 1940 and departed this life July 1 1981 at the age of 40 years, 11 months and 6 days at his home. He was united in marriage to Lillian Pearl Faulkner on January 3, 1960. To this union three sons were born. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife and his sons, Eugene, Darrell and Brian, all of the house. ORVILLE LEE FRENCH - Age 51 of Rolla died January 16, 2009. He was born june 14, 1957 in Van Buren, Mo., to Orville and Sadie French. He served in the national Guard, #1438 AFBR in Rolla, for 15 years, from July 26, 1977, until April 15, 1992. He married Toni Ellen Yeggy on Dec. 25, 1992. He is survived by his wife, Toni, of the home; sons Daniel Lee French of Rolla, Orville Lee French, Jr. and wife Lisa, of Chesterfield, MO, and Matthew John Yeggy stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, KS; one daughter, Mary Jo French of Rolla; grandchildren Calab and Ethan Yeggy of Derby, KS, Mason and Lana French of Chesterfield, MO; sisters Kay Page and Radean Harden of Muskogee, OK, Clantha Lawson of Jenks, OK, Dorthea Nix of Sand Springs, OK, Joyce Cobbs of Sikeston,MO and Joanne Walker of Campbell, MO; Brothers Leroy Callahan of Sand Springs, OK, William Dale Callahan of Campbell, MO, and Bobby Reeves of Gillespie, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandparents Homer and Bertha French. Services are pending, but will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in St. Louis.

LILLIE MAE WILLIAMS FAULKENBERRY - Came into this world on Christmas Day, December 25, 1909.  The second child of Tom and Minnie Williams, her childhood was spent near Van Buren with her parents and siblings, who eventually grew to twelve in number.  With her Irish sense of humor she told her own children, for they asked, how she "fell" for her husband-to-be the first time she saw him.  "Tripping on a cable at a carnival, she grabbed the tallest best-looking man there, tearing the back from his coat."  They were married on her birthday, December 25, 1926. To this union of Paul Faulkenberry and Lillie seven children were born: Tom, Ed, Winnie, Paul, Jimmy, Paulette and Billie Joe.  Theirs was a long and fruitful union.  He provided and she kept the hearth and home, making certain that her family would become the best they could through her desire to see them educated; not thwarting their individualities. She supported their minds, suffered the terrible mother's grief of loosing Jimmy at a tender age, became a guardian and grandmother to Lauralyn, Jim, Dick, Kate, Tawny and Jennifer, Amy, Lisa and David;  Angie, Tom,  Ronnie, Jimmy;  Kim, Tammy and Becky, and a great-grandmother to their 20 children. A staunch Democrat, she campaigned for Ed, campaigned often for Winnie, became a critic and talent agent for Paul, a helper and adviser to Paulette, a standard bearer for her Military Officers, Tom and Ed; agonized for their safe returns; bathed Billy Joe in love and support, and prayed for all to be right. After loosing her Soul Mate of 61 years, her own sound body started a decline that has led to this day.  Her gritty, determined but gentle spirit left her body at 4:00 pm July 24, 1993 to soar to God, to be reunited, to wait patiently, to give heart, to live forever in His firmament.

Willard Luther Garrett - Born September 30, 1923 at Fremont, Missouri, the son of Luther and Daisey (Wilson) Garrett. He went to be with our Lord and Savior on August 9, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital, Mountain View, Missouri. Willard is survived by his wife of 25 years, Virginia, of the home in Birch Tree, Missouri; four sons, Gene and wife, Donna, of Birch Tree, Ron and wife, Sally, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Randy and wife, Shannon, of Onalaska, Washington, and Carl of Rochester, Washington; sister, Melba Rose Chilton, of Cuba, Missouri; stepson, Ken Ragan and wife, Vicki, of Thayer, Missouri; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters. Willard was in the trucking business in Washington, owning thirteen trucks at one time. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his four-wheeler, going on trips, and visiting with anyone who had time for him. Willard served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a truck driver. He received the Purple Heart. Willard attended the Church of God of Prophecy in Birch Tree, where he greatly enjoyed the music services. He will be missed by all who knew him. Myrtle Ina Van Winkle Glass - Born May 21, 1914, in Shannon County MO., the daughter of James B. and Clementine (Allen) VanWinkle. She departed this life on Dec. 31, 2009, in St. John’s St. Francis Hospital Mountain View, Missouri at the age of 95 years. Myrtle graduated from Fremont High School in Carter Co MO. She then was united in marriage to Marvin E. Glass in 1935 and to this union three sons were born, Dayne, Gerald and Richard. After Marvin’s death in 1993, she married George Greene in 1995. Myrtle was a manager at Angeli CA Uniform for many years and also taught sewing at Liberty High School at Mountain View MO. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mountain View for more than 60 years. She was a long-time member of Mountain View Garden Club, Women’s Chamber of Commerce and was an advisory board member at Southwest Baptist University-Mountain View. Myrtle was dedicated to her church and for years furnished flowers for the Sunday service. She loved Mountain View and worked diligently in all areas. She loved to travel, was a great cook, loved gardening and flowers. She spent considerable time teaching her family about these interests. Preceding her in death were her parents; siblings, Clyde Van Winkle, Leo Van Winkle, Pearl Johnson, Cloe Charles and Jewell Hock; spouses, Marvin E. Glass and George Greene; and stepdaughters, Marvalene Gustafson and Regina Glass. FELIZ GONZALEZ – Age 75, of Van Buren, Missouri died Thursday, January 26 ,2006, at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center, after a lengthy illness, with his family at his side. Felix was born on March 25, 1930 in Veta Grande, in the state of Zacatecas, Mexico, to Francisco and Ysabela Gonzalez Lopez. After serving in the Mexican Army, he came to the United States in 1952, working on oil rigs with his uncle. He arrived in Van Buren, Missouri in 1954, where he was a self-employed water well driller for many years. He was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses. He enjoyed working hard, spending time with his family, fishing and gigging, and trips to his beloved farmland in Mexico. He was well known for his unique personality and sense of humor. On April 3, 1957, he married Helen Marie Keeney in Albany, Kentucky. She survives. Other survivors include four children and their families, Greg Gonzalez and wife, Julia, Ricky Gonzalez, Tina Reed and husband, Stuart, all of Van Buren, Missouri, Teresa West and husband, John, of Springfield, Missouri; three sisters, and a host of other relatives of Zacatecas, Mexico, 8 grandchildren, Cara Gonzalez, Clayton Gonzalez, Raquel Gonzalez, Tori Gonzalez, Derek West, Kasey West, Luke Reed, And Zoie Gonzalez, and one great-grandson, Cayden Baker. Family and friends in both countries also survive him. His parents and three brothers preceded him in death. Visitation was held on Saturday, January 28 at the McSpadden Funeral home in Van Buren, Missouri. A memorial will be held on Sunday, January 29 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. A private burial will take place in the Van Buren Cemetery at a later date.

ELIZA 'ELLEN' NORRIS GRANDSTAFF 4 Oct. 1865 - 9 Jan 1929

Eliza 'Ellen' Norris was born 4 Oct. 1865 in Aid Twp Lawrence Co OH. She was the sixth child and fifth daughter of Joseph and Mary Frances (HARRISON) NORRIS. On 31 August 1884 Ellen married John Howard GRANDSTAFF at her father’s home on Mill Creek, Carter Co MO. Rev. William SARTIN officiated. Ellen and John raised their family in Carter and Shannon Counties. In later years they lived in the Low Wassie community east of Winona, MO near her sister Mary Catherine’s family. Their children were: Edward, married Maude REMBY; Cora married 1) Joe COPELAND; 2) Shirley MEEKS; Louis Leroy married Cora SARTIN; Clarence married 1) Flossie ALLEN; 2) Goldie SUMMERS; 3) Florence MURPHY; Myrtle married Tal FRY; Ernest married 1) Louella DEVORE; 2) Mary MURPHY; John Oran married Opal Anthal OLIVER; James Arthur married Rosetta PERKINS; and Gladys married 1) Edward DEVORE; 2) Goldman PHELPS. Ellen died 9 Jan 1929 and was buried near their farm in the Low Wassie Community, now called Clark-Whitworth Cemetery. John Howard followed his wife in death on 31 Dec 1937. He is buried beside her.

OPAL ANTHAL OLIVER GRANDSTAFF - Daughter of the late John and Etta OLIVER, was born July 23, 1907 at Van Buren, Carter Co MO and departed this life July 16, 1968 at her home in Birch Tree Shannon Co MO at the age of 60 years 11 months and 23 days. She was united in marriage to John Oren GRANDSTAFF on May 24, 1923. To this union six children were born: four daughters, Mrs. Elree RUTLEDGE and Mrs. George SARTIN of Birch Tree Shannon Co MO; Mrs. Johnny Ivan COOLEY and Mrs. Ernie YEARWOOD of Winona Shannon Co MO; two sons, Lester Howard GRANDSTAFF of Birch Tree Shannon Co MO and Vester Leroy GRANDSTAFF of West Plains Howell Co MO. She accepted Christ as her Saviour many years ago and united with the Birch Tree Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until death. She was preceded in death by one great grandchild. She leaves to mourn her passing her husband of the home in Birch Tree; the six children, 28 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ruby SHELBY of San Francisco CA; one brother, Leonard OLIVER, also of California; many other relatives and a great host of friends. She was a faithful and loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed. Her greatest desire was to see her children and their families serve the same God she served, and for them all to meet her in Heaven. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 19, 1968 at 1:00 p.m. in the Birch Valley Baptist Church with Rev. H. BERRY, Rev. ____(unclear), and Dr. K. O’BANION officiating. Interment was in the Oak Forest Cemetery, Birch Tree, Shannon Co MO. All arrangements were under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Birch Tree and Mountain View MO.  

LELAND THOMAS GRANT - Born November 24, 1903 in Polk Co MO, the youngest son of Charles and Sarah (CURL) GRANT, and departed this life February 11, 1984 at Doctor’s Hospital in Poplar Bluff at the age of eighty years. He was married to June G. HOLLIS of Fremont MO on March 23, 1932 in Springfield MO. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Lelia June SMITH of Seattle WA, and Mary Lou MARCUS of Ventura CA; three sons, Dale GRANT of Bowie MD, Raymond GRANT of Richmond VA, and Donald GRANT of Groveport OH; one sister, Gladys FORGEY of Fair Play MO; twenty-one grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. He had lived in the Washington DC area from 1934 until 1975. He was employed for many years by the Railway Express Agency. He and his wife retired in 1975 and moved to Winona. Memorial services were held Wednesday, February 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Brother Jack STEVENS officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Site Cemetery at Fremont under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Mountain View. 

MAUDE ELIZABETH HOLLIS HALE 01 Jul 1915 - 22 Feb 2004

Maude Elizabeth Hollis was born July 1, 1915, the fourth of ten children, on the family farm near Midco in Carter County, Mo., to Phillip Richard 'P.R.' Hollis and Mary Lily (Allen) Hollis. She departed this life February 22, 2004 at Birch Tree Place Nursing Home, Birch Tree. Maude attended school at Fremont, Mo. and graduated from Fremont High School in 1933. Maude E. Hollis and Robert Leslie 'Bob' Hale were married on September 20, 1936 at Winona. They made their home in Fishertown neighborhood where they raised their two children, Peggy Ann and Richard Franklin. Maude was a member of the Rebekah's Lodge and worked for over 40 years for Angelica Uniform, Eminence and Paramount Cap factory, Winona. She spent her retirement years quilting professionally for quilters from many states. Maude professed her faith in Christ, was baptized and united with the Winona Christian Church in 1962. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob in 1981; her three sisters, Jessie Dillard, June Grant and Ruth Lowe; two brothers, Norman and Harry Hollis; and son-in-law, W. B. Dixon. Those left to mourn her passing are daughter Peggy Dixon and friend Emott Atchison of Winona; son Richard Hale and his wife Maria of Moncks Corner, S.C.; four siblings, Frances Thompson of Mount Vernon, Mo., Jerry Hollis of Winona, Lucy Lindsey and her husband Boots of Winona, Tom Hollis and his wife Jeannie of Niangua, Mo.; six grandchildren, Cheryl Dillard of Harrison, Ark., Lynn Voyles and Jeff Dixon of Winona, Lisa Hess of Charlotte, S.C., Tamara Schumpert and Christa Hale, also of Charleston, S.C.; 10 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends. ROBERT LESLIE 'BOB' HALE - Born January 21, 1904 at Doniphan Ripley Co MO to Robert Franklin and Mildred Dora Sublett Hale. He departed this life May 20, 1981 at Doctor’s Hospital Poplar Bluff MO at the age of 77 years and 4 months. Bob attended Winona Public Schools and graduated from Winona High School in 1923. He was united in marriage to Maude Elizabeth HOLLIS on September 20, 1936 at Winona MO. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Maude, one daughter, Peggy Ann DIXON of Winona; one son, Richard Franklin HALE, Chief Petty Officer, U.S. Navy, Charleston SC; one son-in-law, Willie B. DIXON, Winona MO; one daughter-in-law, Maria Cora HALE, Charleston SC; two sisters, Edna PAYNE, Beverly Hills FL, and Opal SNIDER, Springfield MO; nine grandchildren: Cheryl DILLARD of Eminence MO; Lynn VOYLES and Jeff DIXON of Winona MO; Lisa, Tamara and Christa HALE of Charleston SC; Richard, Jim Dave and Elizabeth BRISTOW of Cape Girardeau MO; three great grandchildren, two grandsons-in-law; eight sisters-in-law; ten brothers-in-law, and a host of nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters, one daughter by a previous marriage, two brothers- in-law, and one great grandchild. He was employed in the lumber business most of his life. Bob professed faith in Christ, was baptized and united with the Winona Christian Church in 1962. He was an elder of the Church and taught the adult Sunday School Class for several years until his health failed. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the International Order of Odd Fellows. He served as Secretary of both lodges for many years. Bob was a devoted, kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held May 23, 1981 at the Winona Christian Church with Don ELLIOTT and Dean STOOPS officiating. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home.

NOEL JAMES HARDER - Born June 16, 1922 at Winona, Mo. to James Luther and Effie Mayberry Harder.  Noel departed this life at 3:45 a.m. on May 13, 1985 at St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View, Mo. at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 27 days. Noel graduated from Van Buren High School in 1942.  He entered Military Service in December of 1942.  Noel was awarded five Bronze Stars for the battles of Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, Northern France, and the Invasion of Normandy Beach.  He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct Medal. Noel was united in marriage on February 1, 1947 to Ruth Jean Cole and to this union four children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister. He is survived by his wife, Ruth of the home; one son, Wade of Birch Tree, Mo.; three daughters, Glenda Crider and Judy Reeves, both of Birch Tree, Mo.; and Janet Winger of Mountain View, Mo.; two sisters, Nadine Priestman of Ringsted, Iowa; and Wilda Price of Barstow, California; one aunt, Eunice Landis of Van Buren, Mo.; two sons-in-law; six grandchildren  and a host of friends and relatives. Noel made his living as a farmer and a timber worker.  He enjoyed the outdoors, horses and  hunting, and especially enjoyed sharing these with his family. Noel accepted Christ as his Savior in Laramie, Wyoming in October of 1975.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he had a special place in his heart for each one of his grandchildren.  He will be sadly missed by all of us. We know that he has gone to be with Jesus and we are so filled with loneliness for him.  But he has worked and finished his time on earth and now we must continue on with our work and lives until our time of reward comes and then again we will be together with Dad and our Lord. Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. in the Pioneer Baptist Church at Birch Tree with the Rev. Truman Pulliam officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Birch Tree.  

BUDDY MARION HARDWICK - Son of the late Ernest Homer and Mildred Mae DICKERSON HARDWICK was born December 20, 1930 in Granite City, Illinois and departed this life on March 9, 2007 at his residence in Van Buren, Missouri. He had attained the age of seventy-six years, two months and nineteen days. Mr. HARDWICK had resided in Van Buren for the past twenty-two years and was formerly of Shannon Co MO. He was a United States Army Veteran and a retired sawmill worker. Buddy enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his nieces, nephews and other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Mildred HARDWICK; one brother Merle 'Reggie' HARDWICK; and one sister Nadine HOLMES. Survivors include three sisters, Thelma MILLER of Alton; Mary ‘Mabel’ SHEMWELL of Winona and Helen BEBEE and husband Henry of Havre, Montana; three brothers, Richard HARDWICK of Fremont, Homer HARDWICK and wife, Kay and Ernie HARDWICK all of Winona; a host of nieces, nephews, and family and friends too numerous to mention, that mourn his passing. Visitation was held on Sunday, March 11, 2007 in the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, Missouri. Funeral was Monday, March 12, 2007 at 1:00 pm in the McSpadden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. JAMES LEE HAYDEN - Born Nov. 21, 1947, at Columbus, Ky., the son of Pershing Lee Hayden and Ruby Pearl (Wilson) Hayden. He passed away July 3, 2009, at his home in Van Buren, Mo., at the age of 61 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and two great grandchildren. He is survived by his long time companion Erma Hardwick of Van Buren, Mo.; seven daughters Sarah Lee Hayden of East Prairie, Mo., Chastity Rene Rodriquez and husband Jose of East Prairie, Mo., Virginia Kay Kirby of East Prairie, Mo., Patty Penrod and husband Danny of Sikeston, Mo., Lisa Eager and husband Shawn of Van Buren, Mo., Lucy Getts and husband Chris of Van Buren, Mo., Daisey Williams and husband Bob of Van Buren, Mo.; four sons, Richard Hardwick and wife Teresa of Dubuque, Iowa, Ronald Hardwick of Charleston, Mo., Jamie Hardwick and wife Rita of Van Buren, Mo., and Johnny Hardwick and wife Wanda of Fremont, Mo.; two brothers Bobby Hayden and wife Joan of Dexter, Mo., and Danny Hayden and wife Dusty of Wapapello, Mo.; five sisters, Imogene Gady of Sikeston, Mo., Faye Higgins of Edward, Wash., Ruby Meeks of Sikeston, Mo., Janice Wood of Ohio, and Patty Smith of Everett, Wash.; 39 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends. James and his family relocated to the Charleston and Sikeston area in the 1950s. He attended the Dogwood Schools. James served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967 until 1973. He was placed in charge of the Bombs Assembly Team working with the Arc Light Project during the Vietnam War. He received high commendations from his commanding officers and recognition by then President Nixon. Sergeant Hayden was honorably discharged in July 1973. James returned to southern Missouri after serving in the Air Force. He made his home in the Sikeston area and began employment as an over the road truck driver. In 2002, James relocated to Van Buren, Mo., and continued to work until his retirement in 2008. James enjoyed hunting, fishing and sitting at Daizy's Convenient Store drinking coffee and scratching lottery tickets. He loved spending time with this grandchildren and his girls. James will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church of God of Prophecy in Winona, Mo. LARRY GENE HAYNES - Born at Low Wassie, MO on October 4, 1940 to Elgia Burlew. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, June 23, 2009 at the age of 68 years and 8 months. His mother Elgia Burlew married Samuel Winters who took Larry under his wing to become his father and friend. Larry lived and attended school at Low Wassie, MO and was later united in marriage to Charlotte Kay Weaver on February 13, 1958. To this union four children were born, Rhonda, Alan, Teresa and Steven. Larry was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Elgia Winters; his wife Charlotte Haynes, granddaughter Marci Smith; father and mother-in-law Wella and Ellen Mae Weaver; and brother-in-law Damon Weible. He will always be remembered by his children and their spouses Rhonda and John Smith of Birch Tree, MO; Larry Alan Haynes of Winona, MO; Teresa and Bobby Miley of Birch Tree, MO; and Steven Haynes of Winona, MO; his treasured grandchildren Michael and Aaron Smith, Dustin and Christopher Haynes, Julie Palmer, Brandon Miley, Brook Wallace and Johnathan Wall; his great-grandchildren Ethan and Hannah Smith, Kyleigh and Karson Smith, Landon, Brinson and Kayden Haynes, Kelton Miley, Bryleigh Wallace, and Rylin Daughtery; his caring sister-in-law Shirley Weible, best friend Bob White and cousin Chuck Winters, along with countless other friends and family who have been blessed to know him. Before his retirement, Larry was employed by the Shannon County Road District for many years and later worked for Howards Construction. He enjoyed his jobs and was known for the excellent work he performed. Larry enjoyed fishing and gigging, gardening, reading Westerns, watching Cardinal Baseball and visiting with friends and family. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend who touched many lives with his easy going personality and sensitivity. Larry was easy to talk to and made friends easily. He believed in God and was ready to go to Heaven to be reunited with his loved ones. Before his passing, he repeated the word 'HOME' several times. We believe he could see his heavenly home that was waiting for him. Larry will be dearly missed by those he left behind. Funeral Services were held Friday, June 26, 2009 at 2PM at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO with John Smith officiating. Interment was in Evaline Green Mountain Cemetery at Fremont, MO under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

SARAH  E.  HEARST - Born in Franklin County, Missouri July 13, 1844 and was married to John Hearst February 17, 1861.  To them were born thirteen children, four of whom survived her at the time of death.  They were Mrs. Annie S. Massie of Fremont, Mrs. Bertha Watters of Harrison, Idaho, Mrs. Mattie Smith of Winona and Tom Hearst of Low Wassie. (Mrs. Watters passed away at her home in Idaho at four o'clock of the afternoon Mrs. Hearst was being laid to rest.)  In addition to the surviving son and daughters, Mrs. Hearst leaves 35 grand children, 74 great grand children and 7 great-great-grand children. During her early life Mrs. Hearst became   a member of the Methodist Church and remained a true and faithful believer in the teachings of the church until her death. Mr. and Mrs. Hearst located in Shannon County in 1883 and for the most  of the years since she lived in this county, always being an alert and active citizen interested in everything good for her neighbors and her community.  During recent months Mrs. Hearst made her home with her daughter Mrs. Mattie Smith of Winona, and it was at her home that Mrs. Hearst passed quietly away early in the morning of February 11, 1935. She was 90 years, 6 months and 28 days old at death. The Croy undertakers of Van Buren prepared the body for the last rites and Rev. W.M. Fenn conducted a short funeral service at the local Methodist Church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, February 13th.  Songs sung at the special request of Mrs. Hearst were 'Am I a Soldier of the Cross?' - 'Nearer My God to Thee' - and 'Rock of Ages.'  Burial was in the Pleasant Site Cemetery in Carter County. 

Margaret Kelpzig Hibner - Passed away Monday afternoon at Mineral Area Regional Medical Center in Farmington (St Francois Co) MO at the age of 85 years and 8 days. Margaret was the daughter of the late Charley and Mary Koogler Hibner and was born May 30, 1913 in Carter Co MO. She married Claude Leland Klepzig 13 Jul 1935. Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Claude Leland Klepzig (27 Sep 1994); 4 sisters, Desa Klepzig, Ada Klepzig, Emma Kile, Bertha Cathcard; 3 brothers, Lyman Hibner, Raymond Hibner and Buter Hibner. Survivors include 1 daughter, Shirley, and husband Bill Sutherland, 1 son, Howard, and wife Mary Ann Klepzig, 2 sisters, Ruth Klepzig of Neelyville MO, and Juanita Pettit and husband Dean of House Springs MO; 6 grandchildren, Kelly White of St Louis MO, Keith and Brad Fray of Farmington, Sherri, Terri and Andrea Klepzig of Farmington MO; 6 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; several other nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret was a member of the Farmington First Baptist Church. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held Thursday and 11 a.m. on 11 Jun 1998 at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel with Dr. William C. Miller officiating, assisted by Rev. Glen Cowen. Burial followed in the Munsell Chapel Cemetery, Shannon Co MO.

MONICA LYNN SHOCKLEY HOLLOWAY - Daughter of the late Louis Alvin Shockley and Judy Lee (Cameron) Shockley, was born October 16, 1964 in Doniphan, Missouri and departed this life on May 6, 2011 at her residence in Van Buren, Missouri. She had attained the age of forty-six years, six months and twenty-one days. On August 29, 1991 she was united in marriage to Charles Robert Holloway in Van Buren, Missouri. To this union two children were born. Monica enjoyed fishing, plastic canvas, playing games, and working puzzles. She loved being with friends and family, but most of all her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Charles Holloway of Van Buren; one son, Jeffery Alan Neal and wife Katie of Ellington; one daughter, Casey Elaine Downs and husband, Chris of Van Buren; one grandson, Lucius Neal of Ellington; one granddaughter, Gabriella Downs of Van Buren; her mother, Judy Shockley of Van Buren; two sisters, Lisa Thompson and husband, Tom of Missouri and Laura Hunter and husband, Tim of Arkansas; one brother, Billy Shockley and wife, Tiffany of Alabama; four sisters-in-law, Myrtle Pate, Sharlet Holloway, Polly Holloway and MaryAnn Brawley, all of Winona; one brother-in-law, John Holloway and wife, Ladonna of Winona; and many nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends who will deeply miss her and mourn her passing. JERRY LEWIS HOLLIS, SR. 24 Oct 1924 - 05 Apr 2004

Jerry Lewis Hollis was born October 24, 1924, in Fremont, Mo. and passed away Monday, April 5, 2004 at his home in Winona. Upon his discharge from the United States Navy in 1946, he began a 30-year career with the Federal Government as an experimental Machinist at Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. He was a resident of Vienna, Va., until his retirement in 1980, at which time he and his wife Marjorie returned to Missouri, settling in Winona. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his daughter, Ruth Anne Gates, of Bloxom, Va..; tow sons, Jerry L. Hollis, Jr., of Vienna, Va. and Paul S. Hollis, of Burleson, Tex.; tow sisters, Lucy Lindsey and Frances Thompson; one brother, Tom Hollis; five grandchildren, Tanni Wiersema, Michael Gates, Kristi Murphy, Zachary Hollis and Jacob Hollis; four great-grandchildren, Bryant Wiersema, Logan Wiersema, Sean Murphy and Kevin Murphy. He was a devoted husband to his wife Marjorie of 54 years, who preceded him in death. Jerry will always be remembered for his love and devotion to his family, who will miss him beyond measure. JAMES DALE HONEYCUTT - Age 71 of Fordland, MO, passed away January 7, 2007 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, MO, after a long illness. He was born February 18, 1935 at Winona, MO, the son of Everett Alvin Honeycutt and Anna Mae (Martin) Honeycutt. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dwayne Dale Honeycutt; three sisters, Mildred Lockman Cooley, Edna Honeycutt Martin, and infant sister, Eva Honeycutt; one brother, Kenneth Honeycutt; and two brothers-in-law, Donald Lockman and Theodore Cooley. He is survived by one son, David Honeycutt; one daughter, Marsha Staples and husband, Randy, of Springfield, MO; one brother, Ralph Honeycutt and wife, Vina, of Hutton Valley, MO; one sister, Reva Simpson and husband, Floyd, of West Plains, MO; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends who mourn his passing. Dale was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed several years by the U.S. Postal Service to carry the mail between Willow Springs and Van Buren. He was retired from Dayco in Springfield, MO. Dale loved to fish and hunt and be in the outdoors, especially the Current River and James River areas. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. SYLVIA MELVENA HOWARD - Age 100, passed away Saturday, June 25, 2005. She was born on April 24, 1905 in Van Buren Carter Co MO. Sylvia’s family said she lived a long, productive, eventful life. From humble beginnings in the Ozark Mountains of Southern Missouri, she taught school in a one-room schoolhouse at age 17; married her husband, William, at 19, and bore him four sons and a daughter. During The Great Depression, she worked several jobs, primarily as a seamstress, to augment the family income. During the Second World War, Sylvia and her husband both worked at the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond CA, building liberty ships for the war effort, while son, William, Jr., served in the Navy and son Donald served in the Merchant Marines. After the war ended in 1945 the family moved back to Venice IL where they resided until 1957. Sylvia and William then owned and operated a Laundromat in Riverside CA, until William passed away in 1966. In 1974 Sylvia moved to Lake Havasu City AZ, to be near her son William and daughter Shirley. She was preceded in death by her husband, William N. HOWARD, sons William N. HOWARD, II, and Donald N. HOWARD, plus the many family members and friends who went on before. Sylvia is survived by sons Franklin D. (Jan) HOWARD of Glendale, and David E. (Margaret) HOWARD, Sr., of Lake Havasu City AZ; daughter, Shirley R. (Elmer) DIAL of Lake Havasu City AZ; daughters-in-law Clova HOWARD of Granite City IL, and Mary Lou HOWARD of Bradenton FL; 19 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren. She will be sorely missed. A visitation was held Monday evening, June 27, at Lietz-Fraze Chapel. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 28 at First Southern Baptist Church. MABEL OSA MALLOY IPOCK - Born February 9, 1914 at Leeper, MO and passed away at Salem Memorial Hospital in Salem, MO at the age of 85 years, two months, and 17 days. She was the daughter of Claude Lee MALLOY and Hattie Viola ALLISON. Mabel was married to Walter IPOCK on September 23, 1930. She was the beloved mother of six children: Floyd Arnold IPOCK of Bunker, MO, Norlyn Ray Vaughn IPOCK and wife Lolly of Burns, OR., Edith Jane MATTISON and husband Al of San Antonio, TX., Virginia Sue FARRIS and husband Ted of Bunker, MO., Patricia JoAnn PAYNE and husband Tom of Bunker, MO., Jimmy Lee IPOCK and wife Donna of Las Vegas, NV. She is survived by 36 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; special friends Jim and Shirley PARKER of Ellington, MO. She is preceded in death by two sons, Floyd and Norlyn; one infant son and one infant daughter and three grandchildren. Mabel was a member to the Assembly of God Church at Eminence for several years. She had been a resident of Salem Care Center for seven years. She was very much loved by everyone who knew her. She was a Christian woman who loved the Lord and her family very much. She will be greatly missed. Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 30, 1999 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Eminence with Rev. Lloyd Welch officiating. Interment was in the Evaline Green Mountain Cemetery at Fremont under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Eminence.

CARL LEE JACKSON - Born March 24, 1911 at Van Buren MO to John Watt Jackson and Mary Jane Brame. Carl passed away March 27, 2004 at Ellington MO at the age of 93. Carl was united in marriage to Helen L. Weaver on July 24, 1937 at Ellington. To this union two children were born. Carl is preceded in death by his parents, one son, four brothers and one sister. Carl is survived by his spouse, Helen L. Jackson, of Kirksville MO; one daughter, Shirley Dawson, of Kirksville MO; one sister, Helen 'Midge' Dawson, of Camdenton  MO; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Carl will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 1st, at Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Darrell Jones officiating. Interment was in Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home in Winona.

JANE N. CALLAHAN JACKSON - Born July 28, 1921 in Fremont, Missouri, the daughter of Elmer and Olive May (Vermillion) Callahan. She departed this life on August 5, 2009 in St. John's Hospital, Springfield, Missouri at the age of 88 years and 8 days. She was united in marriage to Alvin E. Jackson on April 5, 1942. Jane is preceded in death by her mother and father, Elmer and Olive Jackson; her husband, Alvin Jackson; three brothers, Glen, Don, and Kennith Callahan; three sisters, Mildred Pennick, Maxine Woodman, and Lorene Murray. She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Letha Searcy of Eminence, Missouri and Thela Stanley of Farmington, Missouri; three stepchildren, Don, Alfreda and Joyce; one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces and nephews. Jane will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Graveside services were held at 11 AM Friday, Aug. 7, 2009 in New Eminence Cemetery, Eminence, Missouri under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Mountain View, Missouri.

BOBBY LEE JONES - Shannon County Democrat, July 1947 - Bobby Lee Jones, little son of Mr. & Mrs. Richard G. JONES of Fremont MO was born September 12, 1936 and departed this life July 19, 1947 at the age of 10 years, 10 months and 7 days. Funeral services were held at the Church of God at 2:30 pm on Monday, July 21, 1947 by Rev. ESSERMAN. He was laid to rest in Eveline Cemetery near Fremont. He leaves to mourn his passing his parents, Richard G. and Hazel (NORTON) JONES; two brothers, Ronnie and Rickey JONES of Fremont MO; his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. James F. NORTON of Winona MO and Mr. & Mrs. Zimri JONES of Fremont MO; also a host of uncles, aunts, and many other relatives and many friends. 

RICHARD FRANKLIN 'DICK' JONES - Born November 25, 1909 at Fremont, Missouri, to William E. and Verna Denning Jones.  He departed this life June 29, 1990, at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 4 days, at the home of his daughter in Kirbyville, Missouri. He was united in marriage to Mamie Weaver on May 20, 1934.  To this union six children were born.  Those preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Mamie; and one infant daughter. Surviving Dick are his four sons, Gene Jones of Republic, MO; Buster Jones of Van Buren, MO; Roy Jones of West Plains, MO; and Larry Jones of Willard, MO; one daughter, Nita Reed of Kirbyville, MO; one brother, Orville Jones of Granite City, IL; two sisters, Edith Proffer of St. Louis, MO; and Alma Lee Johnson of Winona, MO; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Dick worked most of his life in Carter County, Missouri, as a farmer and in timber work.  He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, from December 1943 to December 1945.  He was awarded the 'Good Conduct Medal' and two 'Bronze Service Stars' for service above and beyond the call of duty. Dick will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Monday, July 2, 1990 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Rev. Calvin Jones officiating.  Burial was in Pleasant Site Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

SARAH 'EMELINE' VERMILLION JONES - Daughter of John Compston VERMILLION and Samantha Mariah MCDANIEL, was born at Waterloo Lawrence Co OH, January 3, 1874 and departed this life January 30, 1958, at the home of her son, Bobby JONES at Winona Shannon Co MO. As a small child, she and her family moved to Missouri near the town of Fremont Carter Co MO. At the age of 22 years she was united in marriage (11 Sep 1894 at Van Buren Carter Co MO) to Robert JONES of Fremont, Mo. To this union three children were born. Cleo JONES, who preceded her in death at the age of 2 years; Grace JONES MCIVER, who also preceded her in death on November 9, 1951; and Bobby JONES of Winona, Mo. She was the stepmother of seven children, three of whom are still living, Silas JONES of New Liberty; Polly REED of Fremont and Cora BARNES of Birch Tree. The other four stepchildren and her husband having preceded her in death. Besides these she leaves to mourn her departure seven grandchildren, five half-sisters and a host of nieces and nephews and friends. At the age of 16 she united with the Methodist Church and lived faithful to her Lord the rest of her life. She was ready to go and was waiting for her name to be called up yonder.   

KENNETH RICHARD 'BUSTER' JONES 26 Jan 1939 - 20 May 2011

Kenneth Richard 'Buster' Jones, son of the late Richard “Dick” and Mamie (Weaver) Jones, was born January 26, 1939 in Fremont, Missouri and departed this life May 20, 2011 in the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. He had attained the age of seventy-two years, three months and twenty-five days. Buster lived on the banks of Current River in Van Buren, Missouri. He was a self-employed businessman and formerly owned the Winona 66 Gas Station and Garage. Before starting his own business he had worked at the Phillips 66 Station in Van Buren and after that worked as parts manager at Bill Banks Chevrolet in West Plains. He was a United States Army veteran. On June 15, 1996 he was united in marriage to Sharrel B. Hilton in Van Buren, Mo. Survivors include his wife Sharrel Jones of Van Buren; one son, Brandyn Jones and wife, Jeni of Arizona; one daughter, Felena Howard and husband, Steve of Georgia; one step-son, Lonnie R. Pulliam, Jr. and wife, Pamela of Birch Tree; one step-daughter, Shawna Prince and husband Wade of Ellington; five grandchildren, Scott Howard, Ashley Dube, Blayden, Zachery and Lexington Jones; three grandchildren, Aaron and Ethen Howard and Ryleigh Dube; three step -grandchildren, Kiaya Beazley, Dakota Pulliam and Garrett Prince; two grandchildren by choice, Makenzie and Todd Wilcoxin; three brothers, Roy Jones of West Plains, Larry Jones of Willard and Gene Jones of Colorado; one sister, Juanita Reed of Kansas and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. Buster enjoyed spending time on the river and sitting on the deck with his beloved wife Sharrel. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

ROBERT C. HARRISON 'BOBBIE' JONES - Son of Robert and Emeline Vermillion Jones, was born in Centralia, Washington on May 19, 1907, and departed this life on October 5, 1971 at the age of 64 years, 4 months and 16 days. On October 5, 1940, he was married to Wilma Leota Klipper. To this union seven children were born. Bob and Wilma divorced in 1963. He leaves to mourn his passing, six children. Five daughters: Mrs. Joellen Lewis, Independence, MO; Mrs. Sue Boyer, St. Charles, MO; Mrs. Virginia Maize, Farmington, MO; Mrs. Charlotte Maize, Elvins, MO; and Miss Diane Jones, Van Buren, MO. One son: Jay Dee Jones of the home; 1 brother, Silas Jones, Alton, MO; and eight grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Barbara Clements, preceded him in death. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services were held October 8, 1971 in the Assembly of God Church with Rev. Eugene Petty officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Site Cemetery with funeral arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Winona.   

William 'Wild Bill' Kerr - Born February 10, 1902 in Carter Co MO to John M. KERR and Melvina (FOSTER) KERR, and departed this life on August 12, 1999 at Fremont MO at the age of 97 years. William is survived by three sons, Leeman KERR and wife Shirley, Ellington MO, William KERR, Fremont MO, and Jess KERR and wife Janice, Fremont MO; two daughters, Nellie BLANKS and husband Nobel, and Ellen KERR; ten grandchildren, three step grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and five step great-grandchildren. William was saved in 1954 at the Fremont Baptist Church. He was united in marriage on October 26, 1930 to Florence Naoma SIMPSON in Fremont MO. Florence passed away on February 28, 1983. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Melba, two brothers, two grandchildren, five sisters and two step great grandchildren. William will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Monday, August 16, 1999 at the Duncan Funeral Home in Winona MO at 1:00 p.m., with Rev. Glen HAMPTON officiating. Interment was at the Mount Zion Cemetery in Winona MO under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Eminence. 

Lenora Irene Conner Knight - Born December 9, 1920 at Fremont, MO.  The daughter of Dorothy Conner and departed this life on January 2, 1989 at Birch View Nursing Center in Birch Tree, MO at the age of 68 years. She was united in marriage to Charles Wallace Knight on November 12, 1936 and to this union nine children were born.  Later in life she was united with Elmer Sutherland for eighteen years.  To this union there were two step-children; nine grandchildren; and sixteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; four children; one grandchild; and two great grandchildren. She is survived by her five children, Cora Blair of Carterville, MO; Donald Knight of Cottonwood, Arizona; Irene Jones of Sarcoxie, MO; Leroy Knight and Ruth Thornburg, both of Carthage, MO; two daughters-in-law; two sons-in-law; two step-children, Eulah Grimes of Cherokee Village, AR; and Mildred Johnson of Clinton, MO; twenty-three grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; four brothers, Gene Hollis of St. Joseph, MO; Cleo Hollis of Dunnellon, Florida; Billy Hollis of Thayer, MO; and Buck Hollis of Pittsburgh, MO; five sisters, June Edwards of Alton, MO; Reva Watson, Ruby Tucker, Sadie Benningfield, and Noretta Bellamy, all of the state of Texas. Lenora had a very deep and abiding love of God and her fellowman.  She will be sadly missed by her friends and family. Funeral services were held Friday, January 6 at 1 pm in the Duncan Funeral Chapel at Winona with Rev. Golden Hampton officiating.  Interment was in Rader Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.  

Guy Koogler - Son of the late David and Sarah Ann (Stogstill) Koogler, was born at Ellington, Missouri on September 27, 1901.  God called him home July 10, 1984 at the University of Missouri Medical Center at Columbia, Mo.  He was married to Alma Durham January 22, 1930.  Surviving are his wife, Alma; one son, Dwayne; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Koogler, all of Van Buren; and a host of nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends to mourn his passing. He went to St. Louis in the late 20's and worked for the Independent Packing Company until about 1947.  He and his wife, Alma bought a farm near Van Buren and lived there until he retired.  He was a great husband, father, uncle, neighbor and friend; he was loved by all who knew him. He was of the Methodist faith.  He was the last one of 11 children. Words cannot express the sympathy we extend to his family and loved ones in their loss. We pray God's comforting hands bring them strength and courage to sustain them in their grief.  He will be sadly missed by those who knew him. There were a lot of relatives and friends from out of town attending the funeral.  The funeral was held July 13 at 1:00 p.m. in the McSpadden Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ron Brisson officiating.  He was laid to rest in Poca Hollow Cemetery between Fremont and Van Buren. By one who loved him dearly.

VIRGINIA EDNA DIXON LANSCHE - Born Feb. 12, 1917 at Eminence, MO, one of the six daughters and three sons born to David Allen and Flora Counts Dixon. In May of 1952 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Louis Lansche in St. Louis, Missouri.  The couple made their home in Hawk Point for many years.  Lawrence's work kept him away from home much of the time, but Mrs. Lansche kept the home at Hawk Point, MO and raised their family of six children. Not one to be idle, Mrs. Lansche worked for some time as a sewing machine operator for the St. Charles garment Factory in St. Charles, Missouri. She enjoyed her quilting, a hobby in which she had grown quite proficient. In addition to quilting she spent many hours knitting and doing fine needlework.  When those chores began to pall she could often be found starting to refinish old furniture, another hobby she greatly enjoyed. Although something of a home-body, Mrs. Lansche did not lack for excitement. She became an avid reader, and followed with great interest some of the greatest writers of their type in contemporary America. She followed the horror writings of Stephen King and owned and had read all of the Louis L'Amour westerns. When weather permitted, she could be found in her prized garden, tending each plant with love and with great care, and attacking weeds with an almost personal vengeance. Perhaps her greatest love, however, was the daughter whom she kept as long as possible and upon whom she lavished every attention.  Her life really revolved around Sissy, and she gave her every care possible. Mrs. Lansche's health began to fail a short time back, and she took residence in the Birch View Nursing Home in Birch Tree, Missouri.  She passed quietly from life into life at that facility on February 12, 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Lansche, her parents, David Allen and Flora Counts Dixon, by one brother, Esco Dixon, by one sister, Beulah Cleaver and by three grandchildren. She leaves to keep her memory alive her children, Wanda and her husband Donald D. Pummill of Eminence, MO; Shirley Lee Carter of Cuba, MO; Rosemary Bloss and her husband Frank of Blue Springs, MO; David Best and his wife Carol of Bellflower, MO; Reginia Lansche of Eminence, Mo and Lisa and her husband Larry Zalabak of Hawk Point, MO. She is also survived by four sisters: Evelyn Smith and her husband Dallas of Eminence, MO; Marie Alley of Fremont, MO; Freda and her husband Edward Jones of Fremont, MO and Sylvia and her husband Earl McDowell of Marshfield, MO; by two brothers; George and his wife Mary Jane Dixon of Marshfield, MO and Mick and his wife Shirley of Van Buren, MO; by one sister-in-law, Wilma Dixon of Fremont, Mo and by one bother-in-law,  Doewer Cleaver of Van Buren, MO.  She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 13 step-great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a number of friends. Funeral services for Virginia Edna Lansche were held at 2 pm Tuesday, February 18, 1992 from the Troy Chapel of the Kemper-Marsh Funeral Home in Troy, Missouri. Mr. Jim Marsh officiated, interment was in the Hawk Point City Cemetery, in Hawk Point, Missouri. Pallbearers were grandsons. Memorials were to be made to the Lincoln County Sheltered Work Shop in memory of Virginia E. Lansche.   

Lucy Carol Hollis Lindsey - Born February 9, 1928 at Fremont, MO the daughter of Phillip Richard Hollis and Mary (Allen) Hollis. She departed this life on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Winona, MO at the age of 82 years. She was united in marriage to Marvin "Boots" Lindsey on December 20, 1945 at Winona, MO. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents Phillip and Mary Hollis; four sisters Jessie Dillard, June Grant, Ruth Lowe and Maude Hale and three brothers Norman Hollis, Harry Hollis and Jerry Hollis. She is survived by her husband Marvin "Boots" Lindsey of Winona, MO; three sons Roger Lindsey and wife Susan of Winona, MO, Steven Lindsey and wife Margaret of Wichita Falls, TX and Bruce Lindsey and wife Brenda of Winona, MO; one brother Tommy Hollis and wife Jeanne of Niangua, MO; one sister Francis Thompson of Niangua, MO; 6 grandchildren Brian Lindsey, Scott Lindsey, Aaron Lindsey, Blaire Lindsey, Rusty Lindsey, and Angela Ipock; 8 great grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. Irene Newby Kirkman Lower - Daughter of George and Lona Medlock Newby, was born October 30, 1918 at Ellington in Carter Co MO and passed away at Kabul Nursing Home on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2008, making her age 90 years and 12 days. Irene was united in marriage to Lloyd Kirkman on January 4, 1937. To their union two children were born, Robert W. Kirkman and Roger L. Kirkman. Irene was later united in marriage to her second husband, Daniel G. Lower on March 11, 1956. Irene was baptized into the Riverside Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Florida, May 28, 1989. She enjoyed attending services and the friends that she made. Irene loved gardening, both flowers and vegetables, and just enjoyed being outside. She owned several small dogs at different times of her life and most always had a bird or two. She loved to travel, both in the States and abroad. After retirement, she and Dan lived in Florida during the cold months of the year and on the Northwest Coast in the warm months. At one time she also took care of several foster children. Irene was preceded in death by both of her husbands; her father, George; her mother, Lona; her only brother, Laurel and his wife Bernice; four brothers-in-law Arthur Heiney, Paul Stewart, Benny Tyler, Ray Norin; and one niece, Leann Heiney. Irene is survived by her two sons: Robert Kirkman and wife, Mary, of Independence MO; Roger Kirkman and wife, Carolyn, of Summersville MO; stepdaughter, Janie Santiano and family of Florida; grandson Scott Kirkman and wife, Shelley, of Lee’s Summitt MO; granddaughter, Cindy Kirkman Young and husband, Mark, of Blue Springs MO; great-grandsons, Chris and Joey Young of Blue Springs MO; and great-granddaughter, Grace Kirkman, of Lee’s Summitt MO; three sisters, Mary Millington and Juanita Norin of Summersville MO and Evelyn Tyler of Hartshorn MO; seven nephews; five nieces, a host of family and friends that she made in St. Louis, Florida, Oregon and in her many travels. Norma Iris Smith Massie - Daughter of the late Everett and Nora Bell Smith was born on December 21, 1917 in Fremont, Missouri and departed this life November 9, 2010 in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. She had attained the age of ninety-two years, ten months and eighteen days. Mrs. Massie was a lifetime resident of Fremont, Missouri, she was a homemaker and was a member of the Fremont Baptist Church. She loved to shop, read, garden and can. She also loved to go driving and visit with friends. On November 26, 1952 she was united in marriage to Anson Walter Massie in Hardy, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on November 17, 1977. She is survived by one son, Anson Paul Massie and his wife Nenette of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; her best friend and neighbor, Lucille West of Fremont and many other friends who mourn her passing. Joyce Eveline Mayes, daughter of the late Louis Bradford and Gertrude (Payne) Greene was born August 13, 1934 in Fremont, Missouri and departed this life May 27, 2011 in the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She had attained the age of seventy-six years, nine months and fourteen days. Mrs. Mayes had resided in Fremont for the past fourteen years and was formerly of Oregon and Virginia. She worked as a clerk for Safeway in Oregon and later as a secret shopper in Virginia. She was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and enjoyed her church and playing her guitar at church and the nursing home. She was an avid bowler and was athletic and played volleyball and softball in high school. She liked to play on her computer and Facebook. She was united in marriage to Charles Mayes. He preceded her in death. In addition to her parents and husband she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Greene and Charles Greene; two sisters, Ada Craig and Betty Jelks. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Prehal and her husband, Bruce of Peekskill, NY; one grand-daughter, Brenda Prehal of New York; four sisters, Josephine Reed of Central Point, OR, Doris Derousell of Beaumont, TX, Alma Marlow of Du Quoin, IL and Diane Hart of Doniphan; three brothers, Bill Greene and wife, Jeanne of Grafton, WI, Kenneth Greene and wife, Jessie of Mission, TX, and Roy Greene and wife Jeanne of Fremont; several nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by several local friends as well as many in Oregon and Virginia where she previously lived. Joyce lived a truly beautiful life and brought boundless “Joy” to those who were blessed to know and love her. She was a loving supporter of many and was a treasured mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, aunt, neighbor and friend to many who will now miss her and treasure the memories of her life. CASSIE BELLE NORRIS MCAFEE - Born May 20, 1902 at Fremont, Missouri to Ulysses Grant Norris and Mary Frances Hampton Norris. She passed away July 1, 2006 at Mountain View, Missouri at the age of 104 years, 1 month and 11 days. She was united in marriage to Homer Michael McAfee on April 17, 1920 in Fremont, Missouri and to this union six children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Bessie Akers; one grandson Michael Kent; one great grandson, Jason Cooper; two sisters, Elsie Dixon and Stella Norris; and one brother James Norris. She is survived by two sons Herb McAfee and wife Reva and Paul McAfee and wife Evelyn all of Birch Tree, Missouri; three daughters Goldie Vermillion of Mountain View, Missouri; Treesa Baker and husband Bert of Kansas City, Missouri; and Christal Taber and husband Bob of Mountain View, Missouri; one sister, Ruby Adams of Birch Tree, Missouri; 22 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and 38 great-great grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. Cassie loved to garden and she loved to cook for her family and friends. She is lovingly remembered as 'Ms. Hospitality', always making sure everyone was taken care of. She loved her children and her grandchildren. She had raised her children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was working with the rest of the great great grandchildren. She loved to go to yard sales and shopping at Wal-Mart until her health prevented her from getting out. Cassie loved music and always enjoyed listening to everyone sing. Cassie was a devout Christian. She was a member of the New Testament Church of Jesus Christ, where she attended until her health declined. Cassie moved to the Mountain View Healthcare in February 2006. She was crowned the 2006 Queen of Mountain View Healthcare at the age of 104 years. Cassie will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 1pm at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, Missouri with Rev. Scott Stroup and Rev. M.Y. Bennett officiating. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Birch Tree, Missouri under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home in Winona, Missouri.

Wilbur Lee McAfee was born on June 19, 1925 in Fremont, MO, the son of James Lincoln McAfee and Myrtle (Bowen) McAfee. He passed away at his home in Winona, MO on March 11, 2013 at the age of 87 years. He was united in marriage to Glendola Shomaker on September 15, 1956 in Hernando, MS. Wilbur was preceded in death by his parents James and Myrtle McAfee; grandparents; one brother Michael McAfee; two sisters Helen Norris and Emma Lou Redman; three brothers-in-law Norman Atkin, Jake Norris and Noble Nesbit and two great granddaughters Alli and Jessi. He is survived by his wife Glendola McAfee of Winona, MO; three sons James Lincoln McAfee and wife Trish of House Springs, MO, Donald Lee McAfee of Winona, MO and Gary Gene McAfee of Winona, MO; one daughter Linda Marie McAfee and friend David Tucker of Winona, MO; four sisters Pauline Bell and husband Homer of Tuscumbia, MO, Lucille West of Fremont, MO, Freda Grandstaff and husband Buck of Birch Tree, MO and Evelyne Atkins of Winona, MO; one brother Lynn McAfee and wife Velma of Winona, MO; 12 grandchildren Cindy, Tonya, Kenny, Lori, Tabitha, Lacey, April, Josh, Amy, Shelby, Garrett and Shannon; 11 great grandchildren Joel, Grandon, Jacob, Abigail, Alexis, Wesley, Hailey, Charity, Kaleb, Jace and Colby; as well as a host of other family and friends. LOLA GRACE JONES MCIVER - Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert JONES was born November 19, 1896 at Fremont, MO and departed this life November 9, 1951 at the age of 55 years at Low Wassie MO. She had lived a Christian life and was ready to leave this world. She leaves a mother, one brother; three half-brothers and two half-sisters; six aunts; one uncle. We wish to thank everyone who visited and prayed for her during her long illness. HELEN LADUKE MILLER - Born March 4, 1924 at Van Buren MO., the daughter of Louis B. and Lula Lea Hall LaDuke. She passed away July 28, 2008 at her home in Winona MO., at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 24 days. She was preceded in death by her parents Lois and Lula LaDuke; one son Johnny Schoonover; six sisters Ada Heller, Beatrice Kilpatrick, Dolly Stanley, Edna Taylor, Frances Hatton, and Isabell Easly; six brothers Carl LaDuke, Gordon LaDuke, Kristopher LaDuke, Lawrence LaDuke, Melvin LaDuke, and Quinton LaDuke; and one grandson. She is survived by her two daughters Jo Hernandez and husband Jack of Kansas City MO., and Judy Wall and husband Buck of Rodessa, La.; three sisters Nora Elliott of Clinton MO., Opal Holman of Canyon City, Colo., and Sylvia Camp of Winona MO.; three brothers Jesse LaDuke of Overland Park, Kan., Paul LaDuke and wife Darlene of Macomb MO., and Ray LaDuke and wife Charlotte of Douglasville, Texas, 9 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. Helen loved gardening, sewing, quilting and reading. She was very active in the congregation of Jehovah’s Witness until a prolonged illness slowed her down in March of this year. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008, at 2PM at the Kingdom Hall in Winona MO., with Brother Kevin Atkins officiating. Interment will be in Payne Cemetery in Concordia MO., under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

Arville Hastings Norris - Born April 13, 1948, died March 9, 1957.  AUTO TRAGEDY – Small Boy Killed As Result of an Auto Accident- Last Saturday night, near midnight, Arvel NORRIS, the 9 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Odus NORRIS, was killed in an automobile accident at the Winona Drive-In Theater, about 3 miles west of Winona on Highway 60. The boy was in the pickup belonging to his stepfather, Leonard HONEYCUTT, with other members of the family, and the driver was just beginning to move the vehicle to leave the enclosure, the show having just ended. A 1955 Mercury driven by Bill HUNT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. HUNT, of Eminence, crashed into the fence and in falling, the post crashed through the window of the HONEYCUTT pickup, striking the boy on the head and fatally injuring him. The HUNT car also struck the rear of Maurice BROWN’s 1955 station wagon and damaged same considerably. An inquest was conducted in Eminence on Tuesday morning by Dr. R. F. WILSON, County Coroner. Charles Milford 'Buck' Norris - Son of Luther Clay NORRIS and Julia LANE NORRIS, was born on December 23, 1922 at Low Wassie, MO and departed this life at his home in St. Louis, MO July 22, 1971, at the age of 48 years, 6 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Eugene and Richard. He was united in marriage to Cora B. MCCARTY on May 21, 1959. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Cora, two sons, Lynn and Curtis of St. Louis, MO; his father and mother, Luther and Julia NORRIS of Winona, MO; two brothers, Melvin of Olathe, KS and Virgil, of the U. S. Army; two sisters, Velma JACKSON of Henrietta, MO and Louise LYONS of Lakenheath, England. He professed his faith in Christ at the age of 17 and has remained faithful ever since. CHARLES ELVA  ‘EV’ NORRIS 17 Jan 1897 - 16 Jun 1985		Charles Elva Norris - Son of Louis Jiles and Nancy Elizabeth Norris was born January 17, 1897 near Fremont, Missouri.  He departed this life at this home in Winona, Missouri on June 16, 1985 at the age of 88 years and five months.  Elvie was united in marriage to Ollie Mae Weaver 29 Aug 1915, and to this union four children were born.  He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Irby; also his father, mother, four sisters, and one brother. He leaves to mourn his passing three children, Ernest of Fremont, Mo.; Laddie and Gatie of Winona, Mo.; three brothers, Bernie, Richard and Oscar Norris; three sisters, Ava Tucker, Katie Redman and Nellie Craig. He also leaves six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, seven great, great grandchildren and many relatives and friends who loved him dearly. He knew Jesus as his own personal Savior and had great faith in God.  He was confined to his home, bed and wheelchair, but as long as he could talk, he never complained.  He knew in whom he believed. We love him and we will miss him, but we know our loss is Heaven's gain. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 19 at 10 a.m. in the Duncan Funeral Chapel at Winona with Rev. He was married to Jewell L. BAILEY on June 25, 1922 in Shannon Co MO and to this union three children were born, Nola Lee, Berniece Leona and Oscar Ean. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Elizabeth NORRIS, his wife, Jewell, his infant daughter Nola, his infant son Oscar and an infant great-granddaughter Janet Lynn MAYBERRY; four sisters, Artie VERMILLION, Mae RANDOLPH, Elizabeth Marie NORRIS and Nola ‘Dess’ POLLMAN. He is survived by his daughter Berniece and husband Lilburn FEARS of Winona; sisters Ava TUCKER, Katie REDMAN, and Nellie CRAIG; brothers Charles ‘Elvie’, Joseph M. ‘Bernie’ and O. L. ‘Brownie'  NORRIS, all of Winona, and Richard L. ‘Cub’ NORRIS of Mountain View, MO. EARNEST ELVIE  'ERN' NORRIS 15 Jan 1925 - 07 Oct 1999		Earnest Elvie Norris, age 74, of Fremont MO, son of Charles Elvie and Ollie Mae WEAVER NORRIS, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at Ellington MO in the home of his daughter Gale and her husband Larry TURNER, with whom he had lived with for the past year. He was born January 15, 1925 in the Reed community in Shannon County. Ernest was united in marriage to Emma Lee HOFFMAN on January 6, 1951 at Salem AR. She preceded him in death March 9, 1993. He is survived by two daughters, Janet NORRIS of Fremont MO and Gale TURNER and husband Larry of Ellington MO; three grandchildren, Lisa BEARDSLEY and husband Johnny of Ellington MO; Wesley ADIER and wife Gloria of Winona MO; Roy TURNER of Ellington MO; two great granddaughters, Alyssa Gale BEARDSLEY, Ellington MO and Felina Cheyenne ADIER of Winona MO. He is also survived by a brother, Laddie NORRIS and wife Helen of Winona and their children, Kathi THOMAS and Darren NORRIS and family; a sister, Gatie NORRIS MITCHEM of Winona and her daughter Colleen ROBERTS and her family. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Irby NORRIS; and a nephew, Charles 'Joe' MITCHEM. Ernest attended school in Shannon County. He enlisted in the Navy at an early age and served in World War II. After being honorably discharged he attended trade school in Kansas City MO. He was self employed as a mechanic for many years and also did timber work. He retired in 1990 after 11 years of employment with the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. He was a member of the American Legion and the Van Buren Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends. He was an outdoorsman who spent many hours hunting and fishing. We will all miss him and will always remember him for his kindness he has shown to us, and for his ability to be there when we needed him. He never let us down. Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 11, 1999 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona MO with Ronnie Bland officiating. HARMAN GABE ‘JAKE’ NORRIS 17 Sep 1929 - 07 Dec 1993		Harman Gabe Norris was born Sept. 17, 1929 to John Perry and Sarah Ethyl CHRONISTER NORRIS on Mill Creek near Fremont MO and passed away at his home Dec. 7, 1993 at the age of 64 years. On Sept. 20, 1952 he was united in marriage to Freda Eileen MCAFEE in Pocahontas AR. This union was blessed with one daughter, Connie Diane. Jake leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Freda, of the home in Winona; his daughter, Connie FEARS and husband Oscar of Winona; two grandsons, Hunter Norris FEARS and Chance Gabe FEARS, also of Winona MO; two brothers, Raymond ‘Red’ NORRIS of Fremont MO and Orville NORRIS of Winona MO; two sisters, Nellie MYERS and Opal REDMAN, both of Winona. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and one sister, Oma. Jake confessed his love for Christ in 1952 and was a good and faithful servant until the end. He was a member of Horner Church on Rocky Creek where he worked faithfully for the Lord. He was a faithful and loving husband, and his love and patience with his grandsons was unending. He was the most precious Daddy a daughter could ever have been blessed with, and as a husband, father, and grandfather he was unsurpassed. He loved his brothers and sisters dearly, and his nieces and nephews were all extra special to him. He loved his son-in- law Oscar as a son and always took great pride in him. He leaves to mourn, besides his family, many, many friends, for he was loved by all who knew him. He loved everyone in return, however great or insignificant. They were all God’s children to Jake. He loved God, his family, friends, and life, and he lived it to the fullest. He will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services were held Dec. 9, 1993 at the Duncan Chapel in Winona with Rev. ISAAC 'SHERMAN' NORRIS 10 Mar 1870 - 06 May 1949		Isaac Sherman Norris, the eighth child and third son of Joseph and Mary Frances HARRISON NORRIS. He was born in Lawrence Co OH on 10 Mar 1871. On 4 Nov 1 894 he married Sarah Jane BLAND, daughter of Wes Bland. They had only one child before their divorce in 1903: Otis NORRIS. Otis married 1 Stella VOYLES; 2 Fannie Elizabeth JORDAN; 3 Azallee BLAND. Sherman married a second time to Ollie Francis SANDERS CHRONISTER. They had two children: Ada, married 1 Carl BRAWLEY; 2 Charles PRICE; Robert Floyd, married Viola RIEGLE. Sherman died at his home in Carter Co MO on 6 May 1949. He is buried at Horner Cemetery with his brothers and mother and father.  Note: Mo death cert.#15186 lists year of birth as 1870.

James Herbert Norris - Born June 15, 1910 in Fremont MO the son of Ulysses and Mary HAMPTON NORRIS, and departed this life on September 12, 1990 at the Birch View Manor Nursing Home in Birch Tree MO at the age of 80 years. He was united in marriage to Margie KOOGLER in Van Buren MO in 1933 and to this union four sons were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Jerry Dewayne, and one sister, Stella NORRIS. He is survived by three sons, Paul Junior NORRIS of Winona MO; Wayne NORRIS of Birch Tree MO; and Arnold Ray NORRIS of Salem MO; three sisters, Cassie MCAFEE and Ruby ADAMS of Birch Tree MO; and Elsie DIXON of Fremont MO; fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 14, 1990 at 1 pm in the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Rev. Calvin JONES officiating. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

JOSEPH ‘JOE’ NORRIS 18 Nov 1895 - 10 Jul 1971

Joseph Norris was born November 18, 1895 in Carter County, Missouri. He passed away on July 10, 1971 at St. Francis Hospital in Mountain. View, MO. He was the son of Theodore Leroy NORRIS and Jennie M. GRANDSTAFF NORRIS. On June 23, 1918 he was united in marriage to Daisy Mae DREASLER of Midco Carter Co MO. To this union seven children were born. Two of them preceded him in death. Those surviving him are Rufus, of Niles, Michigan; Raymond, Benny and Ella Mae WEAVER, of Winona, Mo; Danny, of Ellington, MO; his wife Daisy, of Winona; one brother and one sister. He had sixteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Joe's mother Jennie died soon after the birth of her fifth child when he was just a small child. REV. JOSEPH MARTIN 'JOE' ATWELL NORRIS Jun, 1826 - 31 Dec 1905

Joseph Martin Atwell was born June, 1826, in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia to Unknown ATWELL and Margaret ‘Polly’ SONGER. He passed away December 31, 1905 in Carter Co MO. When Joseph was 2 years old his mother married John NORRIS of Wayne Co VA and Joseph and his brother and sister, David and Margaret, were adopted and took the surname NORRIS. On October 3, 1850 he was united in marriage to Mary Frances HARRISON in Lawrence Co OH; she was the daughter of Solomon HARRISON and Nancy ‘Polly’ DODD. To this union eleven children were born: Margaret Jane, married Josephus KELLY; Sarah Elizabeth, married Isaac BARNETT; Mary Catherine, married Perry DINNEN; Theodore Leroy, married Jennie GRANDSTAFF; Leutitia Bel ‘Tish’, married Nicholas ‘Lace’ COUNTS; Eliza Ellen, married John Howard GRANDSTAFF; Ulysses 'Grant', married Mary Frances HAMPTON; Isaac 'Sherman', married 1 Sarah Jane BLAND, and 2 Ollie Francis SANDERS CHRONISTER; John Perry, married Sarah Ethel CHRONISTER; Effie, who died in infancy; and Lewis Jiles 'Lew', who married Nancy Elizabeth JONES. Lew was the only child born in Missouri, the rest having been born in Aid Twp Lawrence Co OH. The entire family, including the older married children and their families, relocated to Missouri in 1876 when Joseph purchased land on Mill Creek in Carter Co MO and had a two story log home erected for his family. They made the trip by riverboat down the Ohio River. They disembarked at Cairo, Illinois, and traveled by railroad to Many Springs, Missouri. Joseph was a farmer and a minister of the Gospel, and conducted several marriage ceremonies in the area. It is said he slept with his Bible beneath his head. He also played the fiddle. Joseph and Mary Frances, as well as many of their children and descendants, are buried at Horner Cemetery on Rocky near Winona MO.

JOSEPH MELBURN ‘BERNIE’ NORRIS 19 May 1906 - 18 May 1992

Joseph Melbern Norris was born May 19, 1906 to Lewis Jiles NORRIS and Nancy Elizabeth JONES NORRIS in Carter Co MO and passed away May 18, 1992, just one day before his 86th birthday. Bernie proudly served his country during World War II. He was sworn into the armed services on February 20, 1942 and served in Hawaii as a machine gunner in ‘H’ Company, 2nd Battalion, 19th Regiment, 24th Division. In July, 1943 he was shipped to Brisbane Australia on the great Lurline passenger liner after being transferred to ‘F’ Company as a rifleman. Bernie served as company scout when his unit invaded beaches in Dutch New Guinea to recapture the island from the Japanese. He was quoted as saying ‘I was a scout for the company; I was in my 30s and I thought they should have some younger guy for that job, but they liked us old country boys. We were good at slipping through the jungles because we had hunted so much and most of us were good shots.’ After contracting a tropical fever Bernie was eventually discharged on October 15, 1945 and returned to the States. He bought a farm in the Rocky community where he lived out his life. [He never married.] Uncle Bernie doted on his nieces and nephews and had a special nickname for everyone. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Charles Elvie, Enoch Lafayette and Richard Lewis NORRIS; his sisters Artie Adeline VERMILLION, Mary Belle ‘Mae’ RANDOLPH, Nola Odessie POLLMAN, Katie Lee REDMAN and Elizabeth Marie NORRIS. Bernie leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter. Among the many mourning his passing are two sisters, Ava TUCKER and Nellie CRAIG, and one brother, Oscar ‘Brownie’ NORRIS, all of Winona. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and friends who will miss this gentle, humorous man. Julia Lane Norris departed this life on September 20, 1997, at 7:35 a.m. at Birch View Manor in Birch Tree, MO. She had attained the age of 92 years, 5 months and 27 days. Julia was born March 24, 1905 to Calvin and Nancy LANE at Paint Rock in Reynolds County, MO. She was united in marriage to Luther Clay NORRIS on August 7, 1921 in Carter County, MO. Seven children were born unto this union. Julia is survived by three children: Virgil NORRIS and Louise LYONS, both of Van Buren, MO., and Velma JACKSON of Conway, MO; 19 grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; a brother, Carl LANE of Lynden, Washington; three sisters, Ethel Dreasler and Matilda GOEHLER of Eminence, MO, and Stella JONES of Sacramento, CA. She is preceded in death by her husband Luther on October 5, 1979; four sons, Charles ‘Buck’ Eugene, Richard and Melvin; two grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters. Julia was of the Baptist faith and lived a good and faithful life. She was a homemaker and had a wonderful way with her grandbabies. As long as she was able she loved to tend her flowers and make quilts for her extended family. She was laid to rest beside her husband of 58 years in Pleasant Site Cemetery in Carter County, MO. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 1997 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO with the Rev. Leslie Joe was very dear to all of us. He was always a loving son and showed his love to all his family. We will miss him. We believe he is in the care of Our Lord Jesus. He read his Bible and believed in God. This comforts our hearts as we tell him farewell, until we meet again. Funeral services were held Monday, November 15, 1976 at 1 p.m. in the Winona High School gymnasium with interment in Horner Cemetery. Norris, 83 years of age, a pioneer citizen of the Rocky Creek community, passed away in the Poplar Bluff Hospital Friday night, February 5. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Horner School House where a very large crowd gathered to pay their last respects to this truly pioneer citizen. Norris, lifelong resident of Carter and Shannon Counties, was born January 24, 1877, and departed this life February 5, 1960 at the age of 83 years, 1 week and 5 days. He was the son of Joseph and Frances Norris. He was joined in Holy Matrimony with Elizabeth Jones on October 7, 1894. To this union twelve children were born; two of whom preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, five sons and five daughters: Elvie, Ean, Bernie, Richard and Oscar; Ava Tucker, Dessie Pollman, Katie Redman and Nellie Craig, all of Winona, and May Randolph of Pampa, TX. Also surviving are forty-six grandchildren, seventy eight great grandchildren and fifteen great-great grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. Luther Clay Norris departed this life on Oct. 5, 1979 at 11:05 a.m. at his home in Winona, MO. He had attained the age of 82 year, 4 months and 10 days. Luther was born to Theodore Leroy NORRIS and Minnie GRANDSTAFF NORRIS on May 25, 1897 at Fremont, MO. He was united in marriage to Julia LANE on August 7, 1921 in Carter County, MO. To this union seven children were born: Charles, Melford, Edwin Eugene, Velma Lee JACKSON, Richard Leroy, Melvin Dean, Virgil Lue and Vergie Louise LYONS. Surviving are his wife, Julia, of the home, two daughters, Velma JACKSON of Marshfield, MO and Louise LYONS of Van Buren, MO, and one son, Virgil NORRIS of Van Buren, MO.; also twenty-one grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. MARY ‘FRANCES’  HARRISON NORRIS Nov., 1831 - 26 Feb 1908		Mary Frances Harrison Norris was born in November, 1831, in Mason Twp Lawrence Co OH, the daughter of Solomon HARRISON and Nancy ‘Polly’ DODD. She passed away February 26, 1908 on Mill Creek Carter Co MO. She was the ninth of eleven children.  Siblings of Frances HARRISON were Creed, Leutitia, Rachel, George, Rebecca, Sarah, Julia Ann, Lewis Jiles, Catherine and Elizabeth HARRISON, all but two of whom preceded her in death. She was united in marriage on October 3, 1850 to Joseph Martin ATWELL NORRIS in Lawrence Co OH and to this union eleven children were born: Margaret Jane, married Josephus KELLY; Sarah Elizabeth, married Isaac BARNETT; Mary Catherine, married Perry DINNEN; Theodore Leroy, married Jennie GRANDSTAFF; Leutitia Bel ‘Tish’, married Nicholas ‘Lace’ COUNTS; Eliza Ellen, married John Howard GRANDSTAFF; Ulysses 'Grant', married Mary Frances HAMPTON; Isaac 'Sherman', married 1 Sarah Jane BLAND, and 2 Ollie Francis SANDERS CHRONISTER; John Perry, married Sarah Ethel CHRONISTER; Effie, who died in infancy; and Lewis Jiles 'Lew', who married Nancy Elizabeth JONES. Lew was the only child born in Missouri, the rest having been born in Aid Twp Lawrence Co OH.  Mary Frances is described as having dark red hair and blue eyes. She was laid to rest beside her husband of more than fifty years at the Horner Cemetery on Rocky Creek. A monument has been erected to honor this pioneer couple and their children, many of whom are buried there as well.
MARY  ‘HELEN’ MCAFEE NORRIS 05 Mar 1942 - 21 May 2009		Mary Helen McAfee Norris was born March 5, 1942 in Carter County, MO to James Lincoln 'Link' McAfee and Myrtle Bowen McAfee. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 21, 2009 at her home in Winona, MO at the age of 67 years. She was united in marriage to Laddie Eugene Norris on September 12, 1958 at Winona, MO and to this union, two children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roy McAfee; and one sister, Emma Lou Redman. She is survived by her husband, Laddie Norris of Winona, MO; one son, Darren Norris and wife, Julie, of Winona, MO; one daughter, Kathi Thomas and husband, Steven, of Winona, MO; four sisters, Pauline Bell and husband, Homer, of Tuscumbia, MO, Lucille West of Fremont, MO, Evelyn Atkins of Winona, MO and Freda Grandstaff and husband, Buck, of Birch Tree, MO; two brothers, Lynn McAfee and wife, Velma, of Winona, MO and Wilber McAfee and wife, Glendola, of Winona, MO; four grandchildren, Tina Martin and husband, Matt, of Eminence, MO, Jesse Norris and wife, Tabitha, of Winona, MO, Cole Thomas and wife, Katharina, of Schweinfurt, Germany, and Ashley VanWinkle and husband, Jamie, of Winona, MO; seven great-grandchildren, Austin Needels, Nathaniel Roberts, Chalin Norris, Hailey Baker, Charity Norris, Kaiden VanWinkle and Kamden VanWinkle; and a host of other family and friends. She enjoyed painting, playing the piano, decorating, and feeding and watching the birds. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandbabies. Graveside services were held Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 10 AM with Rev. Greg Richardson officiating. Interment was in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.
NANCY ELIZABETH ‘LIZZIE’  JONES NORRIS 01 Jul 1878 - 23 Apr 1969		Nancy Elizabeth Jones Norris, daughter of William JONES and Elizabeth E. TURLEY, was born July 1, 1878 at Fremont, Carter Co. Mo., and departed this life April 23, 1969 at the age of 90 years, nine months, and 22 days. She was united in marriage to Lewis Jiles NORRIS October 7, 1894 at Fremont, Carter Co., Mo., and to this union was born 12 children; five boys and seven girls. Grandma and Grandpa NORRIS, as they were fondly called, lived a happily married life for 65 years until his death in 1960. Also preceding her in death were two daughters, Artie and Elizabeth. She leaves to mourn her passing five daughters: Mae RANDOLPH, Ava TUCKER, Nola ‘Dess’ POLLMAN, Katie REDMAN, and Nellie CRAIG, all of Winona, and five sons: Elvie, Ean, Bernie and Oscar ‘Brownie’ NORRIS, all of Winona, and Richard ‘Cub’ NORRIS of Mountain. View, Mo. She leaves 48 grandchildren, 123 great-grandchildren, 59 great-great grandchildren, one great-great-great grandchild, and a host of relatives and friends. She professed a faith in Christ at an early age and kept that faith throughout her life. Grandma NORRIS was a loving mother and grandmother, and a wonderful friend and neighbor. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Services were held at Horner with Rev. Dolman RODERMAN officiating. Burial was in Horner Cemetery under direction of Clary Funeral Home of Winona.

OMA LEE NORRIS 29 Dec 1922 - 03 May 1947		Miss Oma NORRIS, 24, daughter of Mrs. Sarah NORRIS, of Mill Creek, near Fremont, died suddenly on May 3rd at Owensville. She was buried in Horner Cemetery after services at Horner School, May 5th, just three days before the day set for her marriage to James Grisham of Fremont. Oma Lee NORRIS was the daughter of John Perry NORRIS and Sarah Ethel CHRONISTER. She was born Dec. 29, 1922 and died May 3, 1947. ORVILLE 'COB' NORRIS 26 Apr 1926 - 27 Sep 2011		Orville Troy 'Cob' Norris was born April 26, 1926 at his home on Mill Creek, to John Perry and Sarah Ethel (Chronister) Norris. He departed this life on September 27, 2011 at his home in Winona, MO at the age of 85 years. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, where he proudly served his country for the next two years. In 1954, Orville went to work for the Missouri Department of Conservation at Peck Ranch. He worked at Peck Ranch until his retirement in 1991. Orville married Rosetta Irene Haynes on November 9, 1963. They were blessed with three children, Roy Allen, Elvina May and Troy Wayne. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Sarah Norris; brother, Harmon Gabe 'Jake' Norris, and sister Oma Norris. Orville is survived by his wife, Rosetta Norris; daughter, Elvina and Bob; sons, Roy and Paula, Troy and Carleen; brother, Raymond 'Red' Norris; sisters, Nellie Myers and Opal Redman; grandchildren, Dustin, Christopher, JuliAnna Haynes, Ryan Norris and Smokey Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Landen, Brinson, Kayden Haynes, Stetson Haynes, Payton Haynes, Kaleb and Kasen Norris and Dawson and Aiden Sullivan; a lifetime friend and fishing companion, Vernon Haynes. He loved farming, working with his cattle and always raised a big garden. He enjoyed working outdoors and was always doing something on the farm. Orville was a Christian all his life and a member of the Baptist Church where he was a deacon for many years. His grandkids and great-grandkids were the light of his life. Orville was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and a good friend to many. Orville will be sadly missed and remembered by all who knew him. OSCAR L.  ‘BROWNIE’ NORRIS 17 May 1921 - 21 Oct 2003		Oscar L. Norris was born May 17, 1921 to Louis Jiles and Nancy Elizabeth JONES NORRIS on Rocky Creek in Shannon Co MO. He departed this life at his home in Winona on October 21, 2003 at the age of 82 years, 5 months and 4 days. He was united in marriage to Norrine BARKLEY on January 12, 1946 at St. Louis MO and to this union three children were born, Stanley Jones, Janet Jeraine and Daryl Scott. Brownie is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, seven sisters and one son, Stanley. He is survived by his wife Norrine of the home; one daughter, Janet and husband Robert SIMPSON of Winona; one son, Scott and wife Sharon, also of Winona; five grandchildren, Cathy, Macklyn and wife Lisa, Stacy and husband Steve, Daryl and wife Jaclyn, and L. J.; eleven great grandchildren, Brennan and Audrianna, Brianne and Britney, Brooke, Dylan, Morgan and Mason, Kyle, Abigail and Weston Oscar, and many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives. Brownie was the youngest of twelve children, raised in a home filled with love, where he grew to be a man of honor and integrity. He loved his family to the very depth of his being, was wonderful husband, dad and pop. Brownie worked most of his life either in the timber industry or as a livestock farmer. For many years he worked the open range, catching and marking hogs, and many are the stories of Dobbie, O'Dell and Yeller. He loved to ride a good horse and hear a good hound run - Ole Jarg, Minnie Pearl. He could tell of a chase and know every 'holler' and hill, every bawl and chop. How fitting that the last hound he owned was named Gabriel. Brownie accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior in 1997 and was baptized that same year. He continued to serve the Lord the rest of his life, in testimony, in special songs and in his daily walk. OTIS NORRIS 11 Aug 1893 - 23 Feb 1953		Sarah Otis Norris, son of Sarah [Bland] and Sherman NORRIS, was born August 11th, 1893, and departed this life February 23rd, 1953, at the age of 59 years, 6 months and 11 days. He joined the Methodist Church and was baptized at the age of 21 years. He kept his Christian faith by being kind to everyone and was always ready to help anyone in need. He was united in marriage to Stella VOYLES in 1915. To this union was born one daughter, Eva HUGHES of Eminence. His wife preceded him in death in 1916. In 1918, he was united in marriage to Fannie JORDON. To this union were born four children, Lena THOMPSON of Winona, Gerald NORRIS of Kansas City, Missouri, Josephine LADD of Rangely, Colo., Junior NORRIS of Winona. This wife preceded him in death, November 7, 1947. Later he was united in marriage to Azallee CHRONISTER. To this union was born one son, Layard NORRIS. He also leaves one adopted son, Arville NORRIS of the home. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Azallee, 7 grandchildren, one half sister, Ada BRAWLEY of Winona, 3 half brothers, Bob NORRIS of Winona, Walter ALCORN of Colo., and Roy ALCORN of Montana. PAUL J. 'JOE PAUL' NORRIS 24 Sep 1936 - 13 Apr 2001		Paul Joseph Norris was born Sep. 24, 1936 at Mill Creek Carter Co MO to James and Margie Koogler Norris. He died Fri., Apr. 13, 2001 at his home in Birch Tree MO at the age of 64 years. Paul married Bonda Kelly on Apr. 22, 1955 at Winona. To this union seven children were born: Patricia, Benny Ray, Wanda Louise, Paul Dewaine, Paula, Roger Allen and William J. Paul worked in the timber industry many years as a logger. He was a great story teller. Paul loved the outdoors and spent much time hunting and fishing. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Survivors include his wife Bonda, four sons, Benny Norris and Dewaine Norris of Winona, Roger Norris of Birch Tree and William Norris of Van Buren; three daughters, Tricia Kelley of Woodale IL, Wanda Brawley of Winona, and Paul O'Dell of Van Buren; two brothers, Herbie Wayne Norris of Birch Tree and Arnold Ray Norris of Salem MO; 14 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Jerry Dewayne Norris, and one granddaughter, Danelle Abbott. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tue., Apr. 17, 2001 at Yarber Mortuary, Mountain View MO, with Myron Aiken officiating. Burial was at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Winona.
RAYMOND WESLEY 'RED' NORRIS 12 Nov 1924 - 02 Jun 2012		Raymond "Red" Norris, son of the late John Perry and Sarah (Chronister) Norris, was born November 12, 1924 on Mill Creek near Fremont, Missouri and departed this life June 2, 2012 at his residence in Fremont, Missouri. He had attained the age of eighty-seven years, six months and eight days. Red was a lifetime resident of Fremont, Missouri and was a businessman and farmer. He owned and operated the Norris Garage and sold International Trucks. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving in World War II and was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, 32 degree Mason. He served on many boards including the; Fremont school board, the SWCD, and was a University of Missouri Extension Council member. On March 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Simpson in Van Buren, Missouri. Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Mary Lou Norris of Fremont; three children, Gloria Larivee and husband, Bob of Cape Girardeau, Gary Norris and wife, Paula of Fremont and Pam Crass and husband, Dennis of Patterson; five grandchildren, April McClintock and husband, Shaun, Jennifer Norris, Jessica Crass, Clay Crass and Chase Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Maddie, Sydney and Rylee McClintock; two sisters, Nellie Myers and Opal Redman and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one sister, Oma Norris and two brothers, Harmon (Jake) Norris and Orville Norris. Red loved all people and especially kids. Several generations of kids loved visiting Red at his station and could always look forward to leaving with a candy bar or soda. Red was known for his generosity, he was always willing to offer a helping hand to those in need. He lived by the Golden Rule, always treating others with respect and dignity no matter their station in life. RICHARD LEWIS ‘CUB’ NORRIS 06 Jul 1918 - 07 Nov 1988		Richard Lewis Norris was born July 6, 1918 at Fremont, MO the son of Lewis Jiles and Nancy Elizabeth Jones Norris and departed this life on Nov. 7, 1988 at the VA Hospital in Columbia, MO at the age of 70 years. He was married to Beulah Norris and to this union eight children were born.  He married Louise Shoemaker on April 6, 1976 at Houston, MO.  He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Leslie Joe Norris; two grandchildren; one step-son; five sisters and two brothers.  He is survived by his wife, Louise, of the home; two sons, Jack and Ronnie Norris, both of Winona, MO; five daughters, Shirley Osborne and Sherry Basham, both of Winona, MO; Geraldine Seahorn and Jewell Alcorn, both of Saratoga, WY; and Nola Powell of Hanna, WY: one step-daughter, Phyllis Parcell; two brothers, Bernie and Brownie Norris, both of Winona, MO; two sisters, Ava Tucker and Nellie Craig, both of Winona, MO; twenty-eight grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren. He was a life-time member of the VFW and DAV. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 10 at 1 pm in the Duncan Funeral Chapel at Winona with Rev. Jack Honeycutt officiating.  Interment was in Horner Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home.
ROBERT FLOYD ‘BOB’ NORRIS 19 Oct 1920 - 30 Aug 2003		Robert Floyd Norris was born at Fremont Carter Co MO on October 19, 1920. He passed away August 30, 2003 at the Birch View Nursing Home in Birch Tree MO. He was the son of Isaac 'Sherman' NORRIS and Ollie Mae WEAVER CHRONISTER NORRIS. On February 17, 1950 he was united in marriage to Juanita Viola RIEGLE BRIDGES. To this union five children were born. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Ollie NORRIS; his wife Viola on September 8, 1996; three grandchildren, Tammy and Timmy RIEGLE, and Jeremy POINTS. He is also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters. Bob is survived by his sons Leon RIEGLE and wife Florence 'Sis' VERMILLION, Willow Springs MO; Robert Eugene 'Bobby' NORRIS and wife Brenda PULLIAM, Eminence, MO; Billy Ray NORRIS and wife Carla BOCKMAN, Winona MO; his two daughters, Sharon POINTS and husband Charles, Winona MO; Ruth PRICE and husband Dennis, Thomasville MO; nine grandchildren, Jason, LaCinda, Alicia, Melanie, Shannon, John, Denny, Daniel and Dee; great grandchildren, Justin, Little Bobby, Jacob, Joshua, Ashley, Boyd, Tristan and Kennedy; many friends and other family. RUFUS NATHAN NORRIS 03 May 1922 - 29 Apr 2007		Rufus Nathan Norris was born May 3, 1922 at Low Wassie, MO to Joe and Daisy Dreasler Norris. He passed away April 29, 2007 in his home at Winona, MO at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 26 days. He was united in marriage on December 12, 1945 at South Bend, IN to Goldie Price of Birch Tree, MO. To this union five children were born. He is survived by his wife, Goldie Norris of Winona, MO; two daughters, Janet Dokey and husband, Larry, of Mishawaka, IN; and Judy Sullivan and husband, Bruce, of Ossineke, MI; three sons, Larry Norris and wife, Cathy, of Niles, MI; Steve Norris and wife, Terri, of Mt. Juliet, TN; and Spencer Norris and wife, Judy, of Millersburg, IN; three brothers, Raymond, Benny and Danny Norris; fifteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and numerous other family and friends. Rufus graduated as Valedictorian of his class at Winona High School. He joined the Conservation Corp after graduating and lived in Seattle, WA for a short time before he was drafted into the United States Army on January 3, 1943. He served as an Aviation Engineer for two years in Normandy, Northern France, and Central Europe and was awarded four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge in 1945, he relocated to South Bend, IN where he worked at Heat Treat for 25 years. From 1970 to 1976, he owned and operated Industrial Metals in South Bend, IN. He worked at Allied Bendix in South Bend, IN from 1976 until his retirement in 1986. Rufus was a Deacon and Charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Winona, MO. During his lifetime, he also helped establish the Community Baptist Church in South Bend, IN and Fulkerson Park Church in Niles, MI. Rufus enjoyed crossword puzzles, woodworking and reading westerns and mysteries. He also enjoyed being in the outdoors gardening and fishing. Rufus was known by his family and friends for his good sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Friday, May 4 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Greg Richardson officiating. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona.

ELSIE ALICE NORTON 19 Mar 1889 - 21 Dec 1976		Elsie Alice Norton was the daughter of David Cass NORTON and Ellen KINNARD NORTON, born March 19, 1889, in Carter County, Missouri. She departed this life on December 21, 1976, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 12 days, in the St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Mountain View, Missouri. She was united in marriage to James Franklin NORTON and to this union eleven children were born. Her husband, Frank, and three sons: Elwood, George and Delbert, preceded her in death. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age, was baptized and lived a good Christian life and was ready to meet her Savior. She was a kind and loving mother and wife. She cherished her family dearly and was happiest when her children and grandchildren all gathered home for a visit. ‘Granny’ - as she was known to every one, was a very special person, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. She and our Daddy had a long and wonderful life together, and the happy memories that they left will be cherished forever. She leaves to mourn her passing: five sons and three daughters: Fred, Don, and Jim NORTON, all of Winona, Mo.; Dave NORTON of Piedmont, MO; Charles NORTON of Salem, MO.; Hazel JONES, of Winona, MO.; Mary BRYSON and Ellen HOWARD, of St. Louis, MO. IVAN WINSTON OSBORNE 15 Apr 1934 - 30 Jul 2012		Ivan Winston Osborne was born April 15, 1934 at Fremont, MO, the eldest son of Thomas Winston and Beulah Ina (Weaver) Osborne. His earthly life came to a peaceful end on the evening of July 30, 2012, at his home in the Rocky Community. At the age of 4, he tagged along with his older sister, Kay, to the little school on Roger’s Creek, where his grandma Weaver taught. Later, he attended school at Fremont, where he graduated in 1951. He was united in marriage to Shirley Norris on March 11, 1955, in St. Louis, MO. Ivan and his father in law, Richard 'Cub' Norris, helped to build the Church of Christ in Walden, CO. When it was completed, the pastor invited them to attend the grand opening. It was here that they both met their Savior, and were baptized. Ivan’s friendship with Jesus has been a long and lasting one.  They returned to the Ozarks, living in Fremont. When Shirley’s old home place came up for sale in 1966, they bought it. Ivan built a home there, and they moved to the Rocky community in 1970. He was a carpenter by trade, and a farmer. He worked hard, but he always made time for fun! He loved bluegrass music, and would often join them on the harmonica! He accomplished many things in his life, but he was most proud of his family. He led by example, and left some big footprints for us to follow! His faith in Christ never wavered, and he shared the gospel of grace with many people. He was quite a story teller, and was known to embellish a little from time to time. He will be remembered for his incredible sense of humor, mischievous grin, and his twinkling blue eyes. He loved every one, regardless of their stature in life, and he was much loved in return. We, his family, are so thankful to all of you for your friendship and kindness to this man that we loved so much!  Ivan was reunited with his parents, and sisters Kay Donley Burns and JoAnne Billingsley. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, and their children: Michelle & Sherman Shedd, Craig and Millie (Hunt) Osborne, Kathy & Gary Banks, Timothy and LaReva (Tweet) Osborne, Darren and Daleah (Pyrtle) Osborne, Brent and Tammy (Salisbury) Osborne, 19 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, his stepfather, Jacob Muscha (and wife, Nancy), his brother, Jay (and wife, Alta), brother in law, Harry Billlingsley, and many nieces and nephews that were very special to him.  Visitation will be Thursday, August 2, 2012 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO. Edna Janet Turley Parcel - Born September 25, 1923 in Mansfield, Louisiana and departed this life on April 5, 2010 at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 11 days. Janet was united in marriage to Arlis Albert Parcel on July 3, 1944 in Pocahontas, Arkansas and to this union, three children were born: Betty LaDonne, Judith Ann and Janet Kay.  Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Arlis Albert; daughter, Betty LaDonne; parents, Richard Turley and Charlotte (Sparks) Turley; grandson, Timothy Blunkall and wife, Shelly; great-granddaughter, Emily Allyson Pulliam; three sisters: Velma, Flora and Elsie, and three brothers: Hulan, Arnold and Ernest Turley. She is survived by daughters: Judith Ann Parcel and Janet Kay Pulliam. Grandchildren: Della Carleen Norris and husband, Troy; Audie Albert Pulliam and wife, Angela Dawn; Tammy Jo Yarber and husband, Kyle; Lesley Counts, and Wesley Counts and wife, Diana. Great-Grandchildren: Ryan Norris and wife, Tiffany; Smokey Sullivan and husband, Randal; Laramy and Dalton Yarber, Ethan and Zachary Pulliam, Kelcee Blunkall and friend, Joe Rome; Gavin and Hannah Blunkall and Bethany and Sarah Counts. Janet worked for Paramount Cap Factory for 30+ years and made many good friends. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, crossword puzzles and bird watching. Most of all, she enjoyed being surrounded by family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. Jess 'Willard' Payne - Son of the late Joel Sydney Payne and Martha Ethel Crisco Payne, was born August 8, 1915 in Parkin, Arkansas and departed this life July 16, 2008 at his residence in Van Buren, Missouri. He had attained the age of ninety-two years, eleven months and eight days. In 1976 Willard and his late wife, Norma moved to Van Buren, near his beloved Deer Run Golf Course. He and Norma had formerly lived in Winona, Missouri where they farmed and owned and operated the Green Valley Farmers Feed Store. Willard was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp, having served during World War II. He was a charter member of the Lions Club and was of the Protestant faith. He loved the game of golf and his golfing buddies at the Deer Run Golf Course, and sharing lunch with his many friends at the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center. He also loved growing roses and giving them away, just to see someone smile. On March 3, 1948 he was united in marriage to Norma Dotson. His beloved wife preceded him in death on December 6, 2007. Survivors include one daughter, Teri Nunnally and her husband, Bob of Joplin, MO; two grandchildren Dan Nunnally and his wife, Kelsie of Collierville, TN and Matt Nunnally and his wife, Becca of Overland Park, KS; one brother, L. J. Payne of Weatherford, TX; two sisters, Martha Swagler of Shattuck, IL and Lillie Mae Sanders of Wynn, AR; and many other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, MO.

DONNIE GENE 'JODY' PULLIAM - Born October 18, 1944 in Winona, Missouri to Jessie 'Austin' Pulliam and Lena Mae (Tipton) Pulliam. Jody passed away July 11, 2006 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri at 61 years. Lena Mae Tipton Pulliam - Born December 13, 1917 at Pine, MO to Jethro Preston Tipton and Lottie (Roberts) Tipton. She passed away on Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at the age of 89 years, 4 months and 12 days. Lena was united in marriage to Jesse Austin Pulliam on August 18, 1934 and to this union 7 children were born. Lena was preceded in death by her parents Jethro and Lottie Tipton; her husband Jesse Austin Pulliam; two sons Lonnie Ray Pulliam and Donnie Gene Pulliam; two brothers Johnny Tipton and Edgar Tipton; three grandsons Ricky Pulliam, Rondal Pulliam, Jr., and Donald Pulliam; one great grandson David Pulliam and one great granddaughter Emily Pulliam. Lena is survived by four sons Edward Pulliam and wife Alice June of Galena, MO, Richard Pulliam and wife Beulah of Rayville, MO, Preston Pulliam and wife Doris of Winona, MO, and Rondal Pulliam and wife Joyce of Winona, MO; one daughter Virginia Haynes and husband Marvin of Winona, MO; three brothers; Olin Tipton of Pensacola, FL, James Tipton and wife Margaret of Dixon, MO, Billy Joe Tipton and wife Alyne of St. Louis, MO, and one special sister-in-law Barbara Tipton of Eldon, MO. She also leaves to mourn her passing, 22 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. Lena Mae loved to garden, can, and was an avid quilter until her eyesight failed in 1995. She loved to talk and maintained her sense of humor until the end. She was truly interested in her children and grandchildren's lives and kept track of all the activities they were involved in. She was a wonderful woman and will be dearly missed. MARY BELLE ‘MAE’ NORRIS RANDOLPH - Daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth JONES NORRIS, was born January 18, 1899 in Carter County and departed this life on January 11, 1973 at Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 73 years, 11 months and 2 4 days. On Dec 27, 1915 she was united in marriage to Robert Franklin RANDOLPH .To this union three sons and one daughter were born: Maskal J. 'Mac' RANDOLPH of Florida, a stillborn daughter, and Bobby RANDOLPH of Winona, MO. She was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother and three sisters. She leaves to mourn her passing: her two sons; three grandchildren; three sisters, Ava TUCKER, Kate REDMAN and Nellie CRAIG, all of Winona; five brothers, Ean, Elvie, Bernie and O. L. 'Brownie' NORRIS of Winona, MO., Richard 'Cub' NORRIS of Mountain. View, MO., an d a host of other relatives and friends. She will greatly missed by all who knew her. She was converted at an early age and kept her faith in God until death. KATIE LEE ‘KATE’ NORRIS REDMAN - Born November 2, 1912 the daughter of L. J. and Nancy Elizabeth JONES NORRIS and departed this life on August 9, 1986 at the St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View, Howell Co., MO, at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 7 days. She was united in marriage to Paul John REDMAN on May 15, 1931 and to this union 9 children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Robert and Maskal REDMAN, two brothers and four sisters. She is survived by her husband, four sons, Dale, Paul, Richard and Melvin REDMAN, all of Winona, MO., and four daughters, Betty COUNTS and Linda WASHBURN of Winona, MO., Wanda YEAGER of Granite City, IL., and Donna WASHBURN of Fremont, MO.; four sons-in-law, five daughters-in-law, three brothers, Melburn ‘Bernie’, Richard ‘Cub’, and Oscar ‘Brownie’ NORRIS; two sisters, Ava TUCKER and Nellie CRAIG; 22 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and a host of nephews and nieces. Katie was a wonderful, Christian wife, mother, grandmother, good neighbor and friend. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Burial was in Horner Cemetery in Winona under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona. 

Raymond Wilson Sconce - Born May 4, 1918 at Eminence, Missouri to William Wesley and Lula Pearl Sconce and died on October 17, 2002 at his home at the age of 84 years. He accepted Christ and was baptized at age eleven into First Baptist Church, Eminence. He graduated from Eminence High School in 1936 and married Milda Fry on September 21, 1940. They had three children: Raymond Wendell, Milda Marlyn and Margaret Ann. Raymond was an auto mechanic and worked with Conservation Commission. At the beginning of World War II, Raymond and his family moved to Madison, Illinois, where he worked in the Army Depot doing defense work until he was called into service in May 1944. He was stationed at Camp Hood, Texas, and did six weeks of Basic Training, then was sent as an Infantryman to Europe. He was wounded in action and sent back to England to the hospital twice. He was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals of honor. He returned home January 1, 1946. While in the hospital in England, he surrendered his life to preach. Upon returning home, he moved his family to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, where he enrolled in Southern Baptist College and earned an A.A. Degree. The family then moved to Marshall, Texas, where he earned a B.A. Degree from East Texas Baptist College. Later, he did graduate work at Southwest Missouri State College in Springfield, Missouri. He came back to Eminence in 1950 and became the first full-time pastor of First Baptist Church there. During college, he had served various churches as part-time pastor. He was ordained into the gospel ministry by his first pastorate at Myrtle, Missouri, which had ordained his grandfather many years earlier. He served churches at Yadkin, Arkansas, and Rose Hill, Poyner, Wheaton, Hartville, and Irondale in Missouri. He served as Director of Missions in Dent-Shannon Associations for two years and in Barton-Dade Associations now Ozark Prairie Association until retirement January 1, 1984. He taught at Eminence High School for five years and at Hartville High School for two years. He enjoyed retirement at Eminence and pastored Fremont Baptist Church for about 10 years. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Oral, Otho and Dexter; one sister, Freeda; one grandson, Stephen Upton; and one great-grandson, Joe Ortwerth. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Milda; their children, Wendell and Phyllis Sconce of O'Fallon, Missouri, Marlyn and Sam Upton of Malawi, Africa, Margaret Ann and Jim Weister of Pacific Junction, Iowa; five married grandchildren and their spouses, two single grandchildren in college and seminary; and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Jesse and Reva Sconce of Poplar Bluff, Mary Lee Honeycutt of Eminence, Johny and Wandalea Sconce of Bolivar, Lucille and Wayne Hoffer of Bolivar, and two sisters-in-law, Louise Sconce of Eminence, and Hinako Sconce of Seattle, Washington. He leaves a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, former students, and dear friends who will miss him. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.  Monday, October 21, 2002 with Weldon Sconce, Sam Upton and Jim Wester officiating. Interment was in the New Eminence Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Eminence.

Doyle Curtis Ross - Son of the late Bundy Curtis and Mary Cordelia Chronister Ross, was born October 15, 1930 in Ellington, Missouri and departed this life November 20, 2010 in the River Ways Manor Nursing Home in Van Buren, Missouri. He had attained the age of eighty years, one month and five days. Mr. Ross had made Van Buren his home since 1936. A local businessman he and his wife, Violet owned and operated the grocery store, Big Spring Food for forty-seven years. He was dedicated to his business and worked in the store seven days a week. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Doyle was a devoted Christian and attended the South Van Buren General Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was very devoted to his family. On December 25, 1953 he was united in marriage to Violet Bowman at Houses Creek, Missouri. Survivors include his wife, Violet Ross of Van Buren; two sons, Max Ross and his wife, Paula, and Randy Ross and his wife, Kathy all of Van Buren; niece, Teresa Smith, whom he loved like a daughter; five grandchildren, Misty Burke and husband, Robbie, Tiffany Gossett and husband, Colby, Mandy Oesch and husband, Jeremy and Amy Crafton and husband, Travis, and Tanner Smith; five great-grandchildren, Hailey and Kale Burke, Gracey Gossett, Collin Crafton and Brody Oesch; two brothers, Herman Ross and wife, Marie, Lester Ross and wife, Wilda Joyce all of Van Buren; one sister, Hazel Black of Roswell, NM and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who mourn his passing. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Robert Ross and Lloyd Ross and one sister, Goldie. JAMES ROSS - Passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joel ROSS on Monday, Aug. 1, and was laid to rest at the Memorial Cemetery near Ellington on Friday, Aug. 4. Mr. and Mrs. Charles ROSS came from Colorado to attend the funeral. Mr. ROSS was 88 years old last November and had been in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joel ROSS of Eastwood for many years. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank home of Mr. and Mrs. Joel ROSS of near Winona. 

William Harry 'Corky' Samples - Born November 17, 1932 at Chilton Creek in Carter County, MO the son of William Clay Samples and Bertha Mae Sheets Samples. He passed away December 1, 2007 at his home in Springfield, MO at the age of 75 years. He was united in marriage to Glenna Joyce Ford on March 26, 1957 at Hernando, MS and to this union five children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Glenna of the home; two sons William Clay Samples of Springfield, MO and Johnny Keith Samples of Springfield, MO; three daughters Rhonda Kay Rector and husband Dale of Springfield, MO; Debbie Samples of Springfield, MO and Donna Dawson and husband Ron of Rogersville, MO; two brothers Clyde Ivan Samples and wife Dorothy of Winona, MO and Merle Frank Samples of Van Buren, MO; one sister Mae Shockley of Eastwood, MO; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Corky was raised in the Eastwood area and attended school at Eastwood. As a young adult he moved west to Reno, NV where he worked as a carpenter. He and Glenna moved back to Missouri in 1983. Corky was an avid outdoorsman and went on hunting and fishing trips around the world including Alaska, Canada, New Zealand and Mexico. He was able to travel and see a lot that many won't have the chance to see. In 1971 he caught a 17lb. 12oz. Cutthroat Trout and won the Cutthroat Trout Worlds Record, a record that remains unbeaten today. He was a Mason and was initiated in the fall of 1967 belonging to the Amity Lodge No. 4 in Silver City, NV. Corky enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield, MO. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. JAMES FORREST  'JIM' SIMPSON 05 Aug 1950 - 19 Apr 1983

James F. 'Jim' Simpson was the son of the late James V. SIMPSON and Muriel NORTON SIMPSON, was born August 5, 1950 at Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and departed this life April 19, 1983, at the John Cochran Veteran's Hospital in St. Louis, having attained the age of 32 years, 8 months and 14 days. Jim served his country in the Marine Corps during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was a member of the Winona Christian Church. He graduated from Winona High School in 1968. For several years he lived and worked in the St. Louis area before returning to Winona in 1979. He is survived by his son, James Cary SIMPSON of Cartersville, Georgia, his mother Muriel SIMPSON of Winona, two brothers, David SIMPSON of St. Charles, Missouri, and Mark SIMPSON of Winona, one sister, Carol ROBERTS of Winona, his grandmother, Esther NORTON of Winona, and many other relatives and friends. Jim worked as a teenager as a retail clerk at Miley’s Hardware Store in Winona. He married Donita BARKLEY on March 29, 1969 at the Christian Church in Winona MO and they made their home in St. Charles MO where Jim had employment with the McDonnell-Douglas Corporation. He was drafted into the USMC in 1970. After returning from military service Jim worked in the retail grocery business for several years before changing to the insurance industry. He had a Farm Bureau agency in Winona before changing to Kemper Insurance, where he was employed as district manager of sixteen Missouri counties. Jim was a mature, easy going person who exemplified good character, honesty and a wondrous sense of humor. He was popular and well liked by all who knew him. He was admired for his scholastic aptitude and his wide range of knowledge and he could become very animated in discussing current events. He was skilled in entertaining and a gifted storyteller, and a natural teacher. Memories of Jim survive and are cherished by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services were held Friday, April 22, at 10:00 a.m. in the McSpadden Funeral Chapel in Van Buren, with Reverend Lowell MOORE officiating. JAMES 'VENTON' CALVIN SIMPSON 01 May 1927 - 19 May 1980

James V. Simpson, age 54, Winona, died of an apparent heart attack on Jun. 17, 1981, at his home. Mr. SIMPSON was a coordinator of the Manpower program for the Economic Opportunity Development Office headquartered at Winona. He was born May 1, 1927, the son of Peter Andrew SIMPSON and Martha Ruth HAYNES in the Wilderness area in Oregon County and had lived at Winona for 33 years. He was a former Winona city alderman. He formerly played professional baseball in the Dodgers minor league system. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Christian Church at Winona. On December 27, 1949 he married Muriel NORTON at Salem, Arkansas. She survives. Also surviving are three sons, James SIMPSON and Mark SIMPSON, both of Winona, and David SIMPSON of St. Charles; one daughter, Carol ROBERTS, of Winona; one sister, Mabel FINCH of St. Charles; and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, P. A. and Ruth SIMPSON; half brothers Garnett and Dewey SIMPSON; and father in law Horner NORTON. Services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at McSpadden Funeral Home at Van Buren. The Rev. Dean STOOPS will officiate. Burial will be at Mount Zion Cemetery at Winona. PETER ANDREW 'ANDY' SIMPSON 31 Jan 1882 - 22 Sep 1945

Peter Andrew Simpson, son of Richard Logan and Michelle Caladonia ‘Donie’ JONES SIMPSON, was born January 31, 1882 at Wilderness Oregon Co MO, and departed this life September 22, 1945, age 63 years, 7 months and 22 days. He was married to Martha ‘Ruth’ HAYNES SIMPSON on March 20, 1926. She was the widow of his brother Grover Franklin ‘Frank’ SIMPSON, who passed away on January 27, 1923, leaving two small children, Garnett and Dewey SIMPSON. P. Andy and Ruth had two children, James Venton and Martha Mabel, who survive. He was converted on September 5, 1945 and was ready too go when the Lord called him. He leaves to mourn his going, his loving wife, one son and one daughter of the home; one stepson, Garnett of Wilderness MO; four brothers: J. R. SIMPSON of Wilderness MO; Walter SIMPSON of Winona MO; John SIMPSON of Albuquerque NM; and Jesse SIMPSON of AR; two sister, Mrs. Mattie LARIMORE of Longview WA, and Mrs. Bessie BOZE of Olden MO, and a host of relatives and friends. Our loss is Heaven’s gain. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Clarence DODSON, and burial was at Wilderness Cemetery in Oregon County.

LEONARD EARL SMITH 14 Mar 1913 - 14 Feb 1980

Leonard Earl Smith was born March 14, 1913 at Wilderness Oregon Co MO, and departed this life on Feb. 14, 1980 at Van Buren Carter Co MO, at the age of 66 years and 11 months. He was the son of George and Martha Ellen BROOKS SMITH. He was united in marriage to Viola Van Winkle. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Claude SMITH; granddaughter Heather SMITH. He leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters: Earlene BAY, Winona MO, and Dora Ann TAYLOR, Mountain View MO; son Dennis SMITH, Winona MO; grand daughter Celestina BAY, Winona MO; two brothers: Leland and Clyde SMITH, both of Winona MO; three sisters: Letha YEARWOOD, Laura BLAND, and Naomi SMITH, all of Winona MO. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Winona MO.

GEORGE SMITH - Born July 18, 1884 at Fremont Carter Co MO, the son of Calvin and Nancy HOPKINS SMITH, and departed this life on June 19, 1950 his age being 65 years, 11 months and 1 day. On May 17, 1908 he was united in marriage to Martha Ellen BROOKS, and to this union 7 children were born: Letha, Laura, Leonard, Leland, Claude, Naomi and Clyde SMITH. George was a life long resident of Shannon and Oregon Counties. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife and his children: Letha YEARWOOD, Laura PETTY, Leonard, Naomi and Clyde SMITH, all of Winona, MO., Leland SMITH, serving in the US Army in Virginia, and Claude SMITH, of St. Louis, MO; two brothers, William 'Bill' SMITH, of Alton Oregon Co MO, and Harvey SMITH, of Winona MO. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Winona MO.

GEORGE HERBERT SULLIVAN - Son of Hugh L. and Lida Sullivan was born at Winona, Missouri, on May 13, 1903, and departed this life at his home in Van Buren, Missouri on the 30th day of December, 1963.  He was united in marriage to Zelpha Wollard, of Ellsinore, Missouri, on the 23rd day of August, 1930. To this union three children were born, Jacquelyn Beryl, James Kipling and Kathryn Maureen. He was preceded in death by two children, Jacquelyn and James, his father and mother and two brothers, Will H. Sullivan and Charles E. Sullivan.  His is survived by his widow and daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. T.R. Thornton, and a granddaughter, Susan, a sister, Mrs. C.M. Miller and two brothers, Ray H. Sullivan and Herman L. Sullivan, a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.  Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in Winona, Missouri, on January 1, 1964, with Reverend Earl Sigler officiating and interment was at the Pine Lawn cemetery. 

WANDA LAHMEYER SUMMERS - Born at Fremont, Mo. on August 29, 1935 and departed this life on November 16, 1980 at 12:50 a.m. in DePaul Hospital St. Louis, Mo. at the age of 45 yrs. 2 mos. and 17 days. She was the daughter of Ethel Woodward and William Lahmeyer.  On Jan. 28, 1956 she was united in marriage with Earl Dean Summers and to this union came one daughter, Jeri Lynn.  Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Dean and father, Bill.  She leaves to mourn her passing, her daughter and son-in-law, Jeri and Mark Deatherage and her two grandchildren who were the joy of her life, Lori Lynn and Billy, her mother and step father, Ethel and Byron Woodward, her two sisters Lorene Lahmeyer Handley and Beverly Woodward Meagher and brother, James Herbert Lahmeyer, her brothers-in-law, Jim Handley, John Meagher, Joe Faulkenberry and sister-in-law Sally Lahmeyer and her aunt and uncle Beulah and Harley Wagner. She will also be sadly missed by her many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and a host of friends.  

ARMENDA FEARS TEAGUE - Born on May 26, 1919 in Carter County, Missouri, the daughter of Otho and Valerie Chitwood Fears.  She departed this life on August 18, 1994, in Deaconess Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was united in marriage to Ray Rosa, and to this union three sons were born.  She later married Carl W. Teague, and they were blessed with two sons.  She was then married to James Teague. She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant; one son, Harold Rosa; and one brother. She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home in St. Louis, MO; four sons, Walter Rosa of St. Louis, MO and Ernest Rosa of Mountain View, MO; Benjamin C. Teague of Marshall, MO and Carl Francis Teague of Illinois; four brothers, Joe Fears of St. Louis, MO; Bill Fears of Stockton, CA; Luther Fears of St. Louis, MO; and Daniel Fears of Salem, MO; four sister, Ellen Barryinger of St. Louis, MO; Stella Honeycutt of Winona, MO; and Genevia Barnes of St. Louis, MO; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held August 22, 1994, at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO with burial in New Eminence Cemetery near Eminence, under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Winona, MO. 

MELBA JEAN KERR TOY - Born May 26, 1935 in Carter County, MO to William Robert KERR and Florence Naomi SIMPSON KERR. She passed away April 12, 1999 at St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, MO at the age of 63 years, 10 months and 17 days. She was united in marriage to Charles Abraham TOY on April 23, 1953 at Van Buren, MO. Five children were born to this union. Melba is preceded in death by her mother, Florence and her husband Clarence. She is survived by three sons, Kenny TOY of Fremont, MO, Dwight TOY of Winona, MO, and Mike TOY of Fremont, MO; two daughters, Sharon BROWN of Fremont, MO and Patty FOSTER of Mountain View, MO; 11 grandchildren; her father, William KERR of Fremont, MO; three brothers, Leeman KERR of Ellington, MO, Jesse and William KERR, Jr. both of Fremont, MO; and two sisters, Nellie BLANKS of Mountain View, MO. Melba will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Funeral services were held Friday, April 16, 1999 at Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Rev. Darrell JONES officiating. Interment was in the Mount Zion Cemetery under the direction of the Duncan Funeral Home of Winona. 

AVA VIOLA NORRIS CAMPBELL TUCKER 27 Apr 1908 - 26 Oct 1996

Ava Viola Norris was born April 27, 1908 to Lewis Jiles NORRIS and Nancy Elizabeth JONES NORRIS near Fremont, Missouri. She departed this life Oct. 26, 1996 at Birch Tree, Mo. at age 88 yrs. On July 18, 1924 Ava married Lee CAMPBELL of Hopkins Co KY and to this union three children were born. Ann, (Bob WEAVER) Tom, (Myrll BARNES, Rosalie FALLON), and Lois (Bill DOWNS, Don BARKLEY). She married William Washington TUCKER about 1932, and he brought seven children to this union, Walter (Pearl MILLER), Dorothy (Job MCNEELEY), Ray, (Elizabeth MILLER), Roy, (Nora BROWN), Vernon, (Eileen DICKERSON), and Kate (Mel VERMILLION), all of whom preceded her in death, and Erma (Buck LUCY, Ralph LITTLE) of Arnold, Missouri. Wash and Ava were blessed with five children of their own, June (Gene ROBERTS), Wayne, (Loretta TRAMMEL), Sharon (Ron WALLACE, Doug DAVIS), Doris, (Bonnie Lampkins), and Judy (Gene LEE, Hubert WALKER). Ava spent most of her life in Shannon County. She was the sixth child in a large loving family and she carried that love over to her own family. They will always remember her as a very devoted wife and mother. Preceding her in death are her husbands, Lee CAMPBELL and Wash TUCKER, her parents, six step children, three grandchildren, one great grandchild, several step grandchildren, 5 sisters and 4 brothers. Ava is survived by her eight children, one stepdaughter, 28 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, 21 great-great grandchildren, one sister, Nellie CRAIG, and one brother, Oscar 'Brownie' NORRIS, along with many more family and friends. Services for Ava TUCKER were held at 1 pm Tuesday, Oct. 29 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona with Rev. Glen HAMPTON officiating. Interment was in the Horner Cemetery in Winona on Rocky Creek under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home. Note: Ava spent the last several years of her life in the Birch View Nursing Home in Birch Tree, Shannon Co., MO.

ALLEN LEO VAN WINKLE - Born on April 12, 1927 at New Liberty, Oregon County, Missouri, to James Allen Brady Van Winkle and Nancy Clementine (Allen) Van Winkle.  He departed  this life on January 11, 1997, at his residence in Mountain View, Missouri, at the age of 69. He was first married to Carrie Mae Odekirk on October 29, 1971.  She preceded him in death on January 24, 1981.  He later married Nadine Stark. Allen is also preceded in death by his parents and three sisters. He is survived by one son, James Van Winkle of West Plains, Missouri; two daughters, Michelle Wallin of Birch Tree, Missouri, and Tanya D. Van Winkle of Mountain  View, Missouri; one step-daughter, Secelia D. Smotherman of Mountain View, Missouri; one brother, Clyde Van Winkle of Lynnwood, Washington; three sisters, Myrtle Glass of Mountain View, Missouri, Beulah Reagle of Springfield, Missouri, and Dorothy LaBreacht of Louisville, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Brooke, Carrie and Desiree; one aunt, Phoebe Goodman; and  several nieces and nephews. Allen loved fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.  Services for Allen Leo Van Winkle were held on Tuesday, January 14, 1997, at 1:00 pm at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Mountain View, Missouri, with Dr. Jim McCullen officiating.  Interment was in the Green Mountain Evaline Cemetery, in Fremont, Missouri, under the direction of  Duncan Funeral Home. 

ARTIE ADELINE NORRIS VERMILLION - Born in Carter County, Missouri, August 10, 1895, and departed this life September 25, 1936, age 41 years, one month and 15 days. She was united in marriage to George VERMILLION on November 20, 1910 and to this union eleven children were born, eight boys and three girls. She leaves to mourn her passing her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. NORRIS, of Rocky, her sons, Mel, Lew, Leland, Charlie, Elgin, Harlan, Floyd and Jackie VERMILLION; daughters Goldie ALCORN, Zelma OWENS and Lucy NORTON; sisters and brothers and many friends. She professed a hope in Christ in early life and united with the Methodist church, in which she lived a consistent Christian life. All who knew her loved her. Her body was laid to rest in the Horner Cemetery. She will be greatly missed by all her loved ones, but we know our loss is Heaven's gain. She is gone but never shall we forget her. 

Dale Massie Vermillion - Born May 26, 1938 at Fremont, MO the son of Marvin M. Vermillion and Ivy Myrtle Massie Vermillion. He departed this life September 8 2011 at Willow Healthcare in Willow Springs, MO at the age of 73 years. He is preceded in death by his parents Marvin M. and Ivy Myrtle Vermillion; three brothers Dwain, Ray and David Vermillion. Dale is survived by two sons Kevin Vermillion of Heath, OH and Keith Vermillion and wife Dee of Walnut Grove, MO; one daughter Kris Phillips of Tennessee; one adopted daughter Janel Vermillion of Florida; three brothers Marvin E. Vermillion and wife Silver of Coburn, PA, Clyde Vermillion and wife Ada 'Phyllis' of Mountain View, MO and Damon Vermillion of Birch Tree, MO; two sisters M. Ileen DeTienne of Ladonia, MO and Linda Lindsey of Winona, MO; several grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. He served 26 years in the United States Air Force retiring in the grade of Captain. Dale enjoyed hunting, bowling and spending time with his family and friends. Edward Robert Vessels was born January 27, 1961 in St. Louis, MO the son of Edward Francis Vessels and Patricia (Hunter) Vessels. He passed away December 19, 2012 at Van Buren, MO at the age of 51 years. He was united in marriage to Patti Eatherton on April 3, 1982 in Chesterfield, MO and to this union two children were born. Ed was preceded in death by his father Edward Francis Vessels. He is survived by his wife Patti Vessels of Van Buren, MO; one son Joshua Vessels of Eminence, MO; one daughter Kristen Vessels of Van Buren, MO; his mother Patricia Belcher of Kirkwood, MO; three sisters Vicky Clark and husband Terry of Union, MO, Donna Klebolt and husband Steve of Labadie, MO and Christy Walker and husband Scott of Ballwin, MO; and a host of family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

MAUD HOLLIS VOYLES - Born Jul. 8, 1888 at Midco Carter Co MO, the daughter of Louis Howell HOLLIS and Malinda J. Jones. She passed away Oct. 25, 1919, in Carter Co MO. She married James Marion VOYLES about 1911 and their child was Vane Vester Voyles. She is interred at Pleasant Site Cemetery Fremont Carter Co MO.  [Updated with correct information Feb. 23, 2010]

RONALD JEROME 'RONNIE' VOYLES - (15 Sep 1937 - 21 May 1956) - Funeral services were held last Wednesday in the Winona Christian Church for Ronald Jerome Voyles, killed in a logging accident May 21, 1956.  The services were conducted by Elder King Beagley, Missionary of the Church of Later Day Saints, assisted by Raymond Britton, Caruthersville, President of Southeast Missouri District.  Musical numbers for the services were: Solo, :Guide Me to Thee,” by Jennie Barkley; Solo, “Sometime We’ll Understand,” by Joe Duncan; “O My Father” by ladies group of the church. The obituary and invocation were by Raymond Britton; Funeral sermon by King Beagley; Prayer and grave dedication by Raymond Britton.  Interment was in the Pleasant Site Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home.  Ronald Voyles was born at Winona Sept. 15, 1936, departed this life May 21, 1956, age 19 years, 8 months, 6 days.  He was united in marriage in 1955 to Frieda Dixon, Fremont. To this union was born one son, Ronald Dennis, age three weeks.  Left to mourn his passing are the widow, Frieda Dixon Voyles; his parents, Vane and Macie Voyles; four brothers, Douglas, Larry, Stanley and Gordon; one sister, Fay Elaine; the maternal grandparents, and a host of other relatives and friends.  “Ronnie” made friends wherever he went among both the young and old. He will be greatly missed throughout the community. He was baptized at the age of 8 years into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and in later life was ordained a Deacon.  He attended Winona High School. MATTIE JANE WALTERS WASHBURN - Born July 31, 1919, at Fremont, Missouri, the daughter of George and Lola Perkins Walters.  She departed this life March 17, 1994, at Poplar Bluff, Missouri, at the age of 74 years. She was united in marriage to Earl James Washburn on May 21, 1938, at Fremont, Missouri.  To this union four children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. She is survived by her husband, Earl Washburn of the home in Fremont, MO; two sons, Norman Washburn of Fremont, MO; and Donald Lee Washburn of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters, Mary Mattingly of Van Buren, MO; and Linda Roberts of Helena, MT; one brother, Lewis Walters of Orville, CA; and one sister, Georgia Kissinger of Ridgefield, WA; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, March 21, 1994, at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Winona, MO at  3:00 P.M. with Rev. Calvin Jones officiating. Alice Evaline Anderson Weaver - Born to Henry and Tiny ANDERSON in Cumberland Co KY on August 7, 1878. She departed this life in the Mountain View Hospital, Mountain View MO, on March 9, 1963, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 2 days. She was united in marriage to James Daniel WEAVER on March 7, 1896. To this union nine children were born. Her husband and two daughters, Della and Blanch, preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing four daughters: Paris MATTHEWS, Sophia LESLIE, Willa PATRICK of Winona, Missouri; and Trula DOWNS of Madison, Illinois; three sons: Omer, Doris and Wella WEAVER, all of Winona. She also leaves 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren. She is survived by four half sisters: Manda REED of Alton, MO; Myrtle JONES of New Liberty, MO; Ora REED of Fremont, MO; Bertha DEPRIEST of Madison, IL; two half brothers; Walter BRAWLEY of Winona, MO and Lee BRAWLEY of Low Wassie, MO; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends and relatives. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized into the Christian faith in 1908. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and love her. Services were held March 11, 1963 at one o'clock in the Clary Chapel with Rev. Earl SIGLER officiating. NICHOLAS E.  'NICK' WEAVER 16 Feb. 1979 - 26 Feb. 2010

Nicholas E. Weaver, son of Victor E. Weaver, Jr. and Romona (Waller) Weaver was born on Feb. 16, 1979, in Kremmling, Colo., and departed this life on Feb. 26, 2010, in Winona, Mo. He had attained the age of 31 years and 10 days. He is survived by his two children, Dalaney Victoria Weaver (8) a...nd Andrew E. Weaver (6) of Winona, Mo.; his parents, Victor E. Weaver and Romona Weaver of Winona, Mo.; one sister, Mary Nichole (Weaver) Redman and friend Mark Sanders of Winona, Mo.; one grandmother, Dorothy Waller of Van Buren, Mo.,; three nephews, Kainan Redman, Stoney Redman and J.T. Barkley all of Winona, Mo.; and a host of aunts, uncles and friends to mourn his passing. Nicholas loved spending time with his children, hunting and fishing with friends and family at the cabin on the current river. He had a talent for playing the guitar, writing poems and drawing. Nick was also a member of the Patriot Guard. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial services will be Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Christian Church in Winona, Mo. Jewell Dean Matthews Yarber - Age 67, of Eminence, Missouri departed this life on December 14, 2010 in the St. John’s Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. Ms. Matthews was born August 29, 1943 in Gideon, Missouri to Clifford Carmel and Clarine Walls Matthews. She was a longtime resident of Van Buren, moving there from St. Louis in 1972. She was a retired agent from Modern Woodmen of America Insurance Company and was also a LPN and homemaker. She was of the Pentecostal faith and was a member of Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, quilting and painting. She loved her family and grandkids and spending time with them. Survivors include three sons, Keith Yarber Lisa of Colorado Springs, CO, Kenny Yarber Julie of Eminence, MO and Luke Yarber Maria of San Antonio, TX; one brother, Kenneth Matthews of Wichita Falls, TX; three sisters, Brenda Matthews of Puxico, MO, Barbara Kuipers of South Haven, MI and Frances Deckard of Georgia; six grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. A visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 17, 2010 in the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, Mo. with an Easter Star Service will beginning at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mark Thrasher officiating.

DANIELLE NICOLE YARBROUGH - Born on January 12, 1987 at Ellington Reynolds Co MO to Kevin YARBROUGH and Lisa Lynn HARDWICK. She departed this life on February 13, 2006 at Ellington at the age of 19 years, 1 month and 1 day. She enjoyed taking care of her beautiful daughter and just hanging out at the river with her family and friends. Danielle was employed with the Disabled Veteran Alliance as a home care worker. She was of the Baptist faith. She loved her family and friends, and always had a hug and a smile. She only got to be with her daughter for two weeks before she left this world. Kylea may not ever see her mom, but in all our hearts and memories she will know about her mom; her family and friends will see to that. Danielle will never be forgotten. She was preceded in death by her great grandparents, James Otho ‘Coke’ BLANKS; Bertha Mae (BRADSHAW) BLANKS; and Ernest and Mildred HARDWICK; and a special little cousin, Kenzie CHEE. Danielle is survived by her fiancé’, Thomas LOVE and their daughter, Kylea, 2 weeks old; her parents, Lisa and Shawn EAGER, Van Buren MO; Kevin YARBROUGH and Susan KOHL, Poplar Bluff MO; two sisters, Pam YARBROUGH, Van Buren MO, and Courtney EAGER, Bolivar MO; grandparents Erma HARDWICK, Van Buren MO; Richard HARDWICK, Fremont MO; Joann HEICHMIESTER and Tim and Jackie EAGER; aunts and uncles Richard and Teresa HARDWICK, Dubuque IA; Lucy and Chris GETTS, James and Rita HARDWICK, Ronnie HARDWICK, Johnny and Wanda HARDWICK, Daisy HARDWICK, and Garrett CHEE, all of Van Buren MO; many other family and friends who mourn her passing. Funeral services were held February 16, 2006 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren MO with the Rev. Danny ROBERTSON officiating. Burial was in the Fremont City Cemetery at Fremont MO under the direction of the McSpadden Funeral Home.

Vada Imogene 'Imo' Washburn Yardley Bauman - Daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Garrett) Washburn was born September 13, 1909 in Winona, Missouri and departed this life December 29, 2008 in Mountain View, Missouri. She had attained the age of ninety-nine years, three months and sixteen days. She was known as 'Imo' by all her family and friends and lived most of her life in the Fremont, Missouri area. During World War II she worked in St. Louis making airplane parts and after returning to this area she took a job with the United States Forest Service. Imo was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Winona, Mo. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and quilting. On October 6, 1928 she was united in marriage to Ezra 'Cranston' Yardley in Van Buren, MO. To this union three children were born. Mr. Yardley preceded her in death on November 8, 1982. She was also preceded in death by one son, Dorris 'Dump' Yardley; four brothers, Omer, Earl, Vernon and Cecil Washburn; four sisters, Diamond, Gladys, Juanita and Geneva; one grandson, Tim Yardley and one son-in-law, Ray Jones. She later married Frank Bauman. He also preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Gene Yardley and his wife Martha, of Tulsa, Ok.; one daughter, Geraldine Jones of Mountain View; one brother, Bill Washburn of Central City, KY; and one sister, Loneatta Neal of Roseburg, OR; nine grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; eighteen great-great-grandchildren; step children, Frances Bauman of St. Marys, Sister Mary Luke of St. Louis, Margaret Ritter of Perryville, Hilda Kranzle and Stella Meuller both of St. Genevieve and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends who mourn her passing. Visitation: 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 30, 2008 in the McSpadden Funeral Home in Van Buren, MO Funeral: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2008 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Derryberry of Winona, Mo officiating. Burial: Freeman Cemetery in Fremont, MO. Pallbearers: Billy Jones, Norman Washburn, Donnie Washburn, Dennis Yardley, Jeff Yardley. Music: Berry Sisters
