Honora Flanagan Lyons - Mass Card from her funeral

Obituary from the Chicago Daily Tribune, 1924

Honora Flanagan immigrated with her family from Ireland to the United States in 1852. There is some confusion about the exact ship and date of arrival. However, there is a New York passenger list from the ship Lesmahagow (out of Liverpool to New York City via Tralee) which arrived on 3 May, 1852 in New York City. The manifest lists Mike Flanagan (age 35), Magt. Flanagan (age 29), Jn. Flanagan ( age 10), Honora Flanagan (age 8), Mary Flanagan (age 6), and Martin Flanagan (age10 mo). Although there is a difference in the ages of the children with regard to other accounts, I believe that it is likely that these are the Flanagans that subsequently lived in Ottawa, La Salle Co, Ill. The relative ages of the children as well as the sequence of their names is compelling.

By 1860, the Flanagans had established residency in Ottawa, La Salle Co, Ill. The 1860 census lists them as having 8 children, with Honora Flanagan now being 14 years old.
In 1870, the Flanagans were still residing in Ill. Honora is no longer living with the family. She was married to John Lyons in the 1860's. There is an Illinois certificate of marriage between John Lyons and Honora Flanagan in 1867. However, the 1900 census states that they were married for 31 years, suggesting a marriage in 1869. The 1870 census shows John and Honora Lyons living in Burlington Ward 1, Des Moines, Iowa. at that time they had two children, daniel (age 2) and john (age 8 months). I believe that the age of the children would dictate a marriage date of around 1867 rather than 1869. The occupation of John Lyons at this time was that of a drayman.

Between 1868 and 1893, John and Honora Lyons had 14 children. The family birth dates follow.

By 1880, John, Honora and family were living in Dale, Atchinson Co. Mo. John Lyons is listed as a farmer.  Soon thereafter, they moved to Jefferson, Nodaway Co. Mo.The family maintained residence in Jefferson Township for approximately 35 years (1880-1915). The 1900 census lists John Lyons as a farmer and stock raiser. Although John Lyons died in 1907, Honora maintained residence in Jefferson Township until 1915. She then moved to Chicago, Ill. where she lived with 2 of her children, Francis and Joanna. She lived there until her death in 1924. A funeral mass was held at St. Jarlath's Church in Chicago. She was then transported to Missouri, and final services were held at Conception Abbey. She was interred in St. Columba Cemetery, Conception, Nodaway Co., Mo.

A message sent to my mother, Mary Rita McCarty, in 1924 announcing the death of Honora Flanagan Lyons. The letter is signed "Jo" whom I presume is Joanna Lyons.
