Alma Nevada Stutesman Lee - Alma Nevada Stutesman, daughter of Francis T. and Mary Jane Brown Stutesman, was born July 20, 1889 in Fanning, Donahan County, Kansas. She was one of eight children born of this union.

She passed away Sunday Dec 1, 1985 at the age of 96 years, four months and 11 days at the Phillips county [Kansas] Hospital.

During her childhood, she traveled by covered wagon with her parents, brothers and sisters through Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas. In the early 1900's, the family moved to Phillips County [Kansas], where she met and married Ira "Dick" Lee on May 16, 1906. She and Dick later moved to Stark County, Ill, Guide Rock, Nebr and finally back to Phillips County [Kansas] where they remained the rest of their lives. To this union four daughters were born: Opal, Jacquetta, Mollie and Juineta.

In 1949, Alma, Dick and Opal retired from farming and moved into Phillipsburg. After Dick and Opal passed away she made her home at Westview where she remained until one year ago when illness forced her to give up her apartment and move in with her daughters.

Alma converted with the Baptist Church as a young girl. Later she was united with the Englewood Wesleyan Methodist Church. After moving to Phillipsburg, she transferred her membership to the Phillipsburg Wesleyan Methodist Church. She continued to be a faithful member attending regularly as long as her health would permit. She joined the Sunshine Community Club in 1936. She was still an honorary member at the time of her death.

She was chosen honorable mention as "Kansas Distinguished Older Citizen of the Year" in 1979 for her many kindnesses and caring for others.

She enjoyed her life at Westview and her many friends there. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was faithful to the Lord and her faith and Christian character were shown in the Christian fortitude and patience in the hours of her suffering.

Her death leaves to mourn; her daughters, Jacquetta Burton and husband, Dale, Mollie Morrison and husband, Charles and Juineta and husband Loyd, all of Phillipsburg; a sister, Lula McKee of Norton, Kas.; a brother Joseph of California; eight grandchildren, Virginia Harrison, Karan Godbout, James Burton, Ronald Morrison, Anita Niederhaus, Jolinda Miller, Gary Morrison and Kenneth D. Johnson; 17 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, her parents, one sister and four brothers. All that loving hearts and kind hands could do was done for her comfort but she had served her time. But there is hope--a blissful hope, through Jesus grace that's given, that when we are done with mortal life, we all may meet in Heaven. (submitted by: Karan Godbout -

Iva Stutesman Rickabaugh Goff was born Feb 19, 1886 on a farm in the vicinity of Parnell, Mo. She was the sixth of a large and vigorous family of ten children of John and Mary Stutesman. Her mother came from Pennsylvania as a school teacher to this new land. The Stutesman family was part of the westward movement from Indiana. It was in the days of small farms from which all the family worked a livelihood. Her schooling was the one room, eight grades, one teacher American variety. She completed the eight grades and became very proficient in spelling and arithmetic.

When homestead lands were offered in Oklahoma, the family went there by covered wagon. Her father found it disappointing and returned to their Missouri home. At the age of seventeen she married Porter Rickabaugh and they built a home on the "Rickabaugh Farm" east of Sheridan, Mo. To this union were born two sons: Clive, who is an artist and resides in Chicago [Illinois], and Harold, a merchant in Grant City [Missouri]. The Rickabaugh farm was a haven for return and re-establishment of many relatives and acquaintances. It was a leaving place for the First Great War and a place of return after the Armistice. It was a home for girls and boys wishing to go to school. Iva once told a neighbor, "As near as I can remember, Port and I have sent 19 children to school."

When her sons were in their early teens the entire family became members of the Christian Church during the pastorate of Earl B. Clark and entered vigorously into the life of the church. Iva was president of the Ladies Aid for many years, taught Sunday School classes and played the piano for congregational singing. She participated in fraternal orders, school programs and all things for the general good.

Hers was the generation to see the greatest changes this world has ever known. It spans much of the aftermath of the Civil War whose episodes were learned from grandfathers, the days of wooded lands, country trails and horse-drawn implements and vehicles, the expansion into our Great West and came to an end in the days of jet flight, the power of the atom and the conquest of space.

Iva had a clever hand; she could make a garment or prepare food with ease and beauty. As her years increased, so did her skills. She did much creative quilting and made masterpieces, some of which were entered at the State Fair. She also learned leather craft and produced abundant work laboring far into the night because of her enthusiasm.

The untimely death of her husband, Porter, in 1945 broke the many years cycle of her settled way of life. In her loneliness, she traveled about seeking occupations to fill her time and found a new home on an island in the Columbia River on the staff of a large cattle ranch. When she was seventy, she married Fred W. Goff of Maryville. A few years before his death, in a conversation with her son Clive, he said: "This marriage with your Mother is in the late autumn of our lives but she is as good as gold and it has made a golden autumn for both of us."

A few years of this golden time and then the winter; a slow loss of memory and reason till only the beat of heart and breath remained. This ended Dec 4, 1966. A full life had been lived; a soul which came from the Eternal Father of us all had blossomed, had borne fruit, enjoyed the summer and Autumn of Life; had known joy, pain and sorrow had ended and returned to the Father of all. So it was in the beginning and so it shall be till the end of time.

Two sisters survive. They are Mrs Flora Lester and Mrs Mabel Dickie of Sheridan, Mo. Bedford [Iowa] Times Press. (Transcribed by Pat O'Dell: genpat@netins.net)

During the latter months of her life Grandma Stutesman, the name by which she was known to her friends, suffered a great deal of physical pain, but it was borne without a murmur, which brought to the foreground her quiet, gentle character. Few ever heard her complain as she fought the great battle of life as a loving patient wife and mother, but she has won the victory, leaving the husband after nearly fifty years of wedded life to walk the path alone and the children without the council and influence of a mother.

Our sympathy goes out to the loved ones and may He who doeth all things well guide you to the path she chose to early in life and which she trod so patiently until her Maker called her home.
