Ray Carpenter

Ray Vernon Carpenter, 87, Chillicothe, formerly of the Sheridan area, died Wednesday, June 14,1995, at his home.

Born July 23,1907, near Percival, Iowa, to Walter and Amy Dowis Carpenter, he was a retired farmer.

He married Gladys Estella Croy, May 25, 1929, in Pickering, at the Methodist parsonage.

Mr. Carpenter and his family lived in Sheridan until 1939, when he moved his family to a farm southeast of Chillicothe, where he remained until 1978, when he retired from farming. He joined the Christian Church, Sheridan, at an early age, moving his membership to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, rural Chillicothe, in 1951.

He was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in Chillicothe, where he served as D.D.G.L.; a member of the IOOF Lodge in Chillicothe, for 40 years, serving as D.D.G.M. for 16 years; Worthy Patron of O.E.S. at Meadville, for over 20 years; and a member of Brookfield O.E.S. for two years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Virginia Lee Boylan of Chillicothe, and Marilyn Hill of St. Joseph; one son-in-law, Bill Hill of St Joseph; two sisters, Madelyn Harris of Des Moines, Iowa, and Nona Murray of Grant City; two brothers, Wilbur Carpenter of Belton, and Dana Carpenter of Gladstone; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

No formal Visitation is being held. Calling Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, at Lindley Funeral Homes, Chillicothe.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, June 16,1995, at Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe.

Graveside Services will be held at 3 p.m., at the Sheridan Cemetery, Sheridan.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church or to Hedrick Medical Center Hospice Services.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Lindley Funeral Home, Chillicothe.

Clell [Harvey McClellan] Clements, 85, Pickering, died Sunday, June 18,1995, at his home.

Born May 1, 1910, in Gentry County, to Onie Lee and Ethel May Robertson Clements, he was a farmer. He married Helen E. [lizabeth] Weathermon, May 21,1932, in Maryville.

Mr. Clements had been a resident of Pickering for 50 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Pickering. 

Survivors include four sons, Jule Clements of Ravenwood, Richard Clements of Pickering, Russell Clements of Maryville, and Donald Clements of Hopkins; six daughters, Lila O'Riley of Maryville, Belvadene Wiley of Maryville, Sue Waldeier of Kansas City, Kan., Cleota Shell of St Joseph, Ruth Ann Florea of Maryville, and Sherrie McEnaney of Maryville; two sisters, Edith Hagan of Savannah, and Rachael Derring of Savannah; 25 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with Cecil Judd officiating.

Burial will be in Weathermon Cemetery, Guilford.

Memorials may be made to the A.L.S. Foundation.

Clell Clements

Clell Clements, 85, of Pickering, died Sunday June 18, 1995 at his home east of Pickering following a brief illness.

Born in Gentry County, Missouri to Onie Lee and Ethel May Robertson Clements on May 1,1910. He was married to Helen E. [lizabeth] Weathermon, May 21, 1932 in Maryville, Missouri.

Mr. Clements, a farmer, had lived in the Pickering area for the last 50 years. He was a member of the Pickering United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home; four sons, Jule Clements, Ravenwood, Russell Clements, Maryville, Richard Clements, Pickering, and Donald Clements, Hopkins; six daughters, Lila O'Riley, Belvadene Wiley, Ruth Anna Florea, and Sherrie McEnaney all of Maryville, Cleota Shell, St. Joseph, and Sue Waldeier, Kansas City, Kansas. He had 25 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and two sisters Edith Hagan, and Rachael Derring both of Savannah.

Visitation was held Monday, June 19 at the Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, with services officiating by Cecil Judd on Tuesday, June 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Burial was at the Weathermon Cemetery in Guilford, MO.

Arrangements were under the directions of Price Funeral Home, Inc.

Mrs. Clements Dies at Her Home Near Hopkins

Mrs. Myrtle [Amanda Swaney Smith] Clements, 48 years old, died at 6:50 o’clock this morning at her home, five miles southeast of Hopkins, following an illness of three months.

She was born February 4, 1896, in Nodaway County and on February 16, 1923, she was married to Otto C. Clements. She had resided at the present residence twelve years.  Mrs. Clements was a member of the Christian church of Pickering.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Albert Swaney, and George Smith, Hopkins, and William Andrew Smith, who is stationed in the South Pacific; four sisters, Mrs. Ethel Rutherford, Clearmont; Mrs. Harry Alexander, Tujunga, Calif.; Mrs. Roland Rickard, Willamina, Ore., and Mrs. Martell Morris, Burbank, Calif., and two brothers, Everett Swaney, Maryville, and Roy Swaney, Braddyville, Ia.

Funeral services will be held at the Christian church at Pickering and burial will be in White Oak cemetery, near there.  Other funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Evelyn Coffelt

Evelyn Lucille Coffelt, 77, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Conception Junction, died Wednesday, June 14,1995, at Desert Samaritan Medical Center, Mesa, Ariz.

Born Dec. 11,1917, in Barnard, to Logan and Bessie Sharp Strong, she was a homemaker.

She married Raymond H. Coffelt, Dec. 14, 1935, in Hiawatha, Kan.

Ms. Coffelt was a graduate of Maryville R-II High School and a member of the Lady Elks and Women of the Moose, Mesa, Ariz. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, Larry R. Coffelt of Littleton, Colo.; one daughter, Vonda J. Miller of Parkersburg, W.V.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville.

Services for Viola M. Cooper, 86, Stanberry, formerly of Colorado Springs, Colo., were held Wednesday, June 14, 1995, at First Baptist Church, Stanberry, with Ralph Pierce officiating.

Ms. Cooper died June 11, 1995, at Pineview Manor, Stanberry.

Pallbearers were Jason Cooper, Fred Cooper, Curtis Cooper, Russell O'Neal, Steven Lane, Stanley Lane, Scott Lane, Edward Evans, Ryan Evans and Douglas Evans.

Jane Cooper was the organist and Jerry Cooper was the pianist. Kim Smith was the vocalist.

Alice Sherrard Peck Dice, 96, Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday, July 8, 1995, at her home.

Born Oct. 27,1898, in Hunnewell [Shelby County, Missouri], to Frank S. and Olive Newton Peck, she was an educator.

She married Ray W. [infred] Dice in 1939.

Ms. Dice lived in Cameron during her earlier years and was a resident of Kansas City for 30 years, before moving to Bella Vista. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Bella Vista.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Mildred Elaine Dice; and three brothers, Wyatt, Raymond and Howard Peck.

Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie H. Moore of Azle, Texas, and Vyvyan Dice Heekin of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home, Bentonville, Ark.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the First United Methodist Church, Bella Vista, with the Rev. Paul J. Johnson officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Breckenridge.

L. C. Downing Dies at His Home in Pickering

Lochyal Chandler Downing, 54 years old, died at 9:30 o’clock this morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Grant Downing of Pickering. He had been ill for several months. Mr. Downing was born October 15, 1889, southeast of Hopkins.

Burial will be in the White Oak cemetery near Pickering, but other funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Funeral services for Donald Mack Jackson, 45 of Kansas City, Missouri will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 13, 1995, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO, with Rev. David Belt and Rev. Robert Randleman officiating and at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 1995, at the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church in Hopkins, MO, with Rev. Larry Maxwell and Pastor Rick Titus officiating. Cremation will be under the direction of Kansas City Funeral Directors of Kansas City, Kansas. Burial will be at the Hopkins Cemetery, Hopkins, MO.

Donald died on January 6, 1995, at the Trinity Lutheran Hospital, Kansas City, MO.

Mr Jackson was born in Maryville, MO, to Mack and Annette (Crowe) Jackson on December 9, 1949 He graduated from Bedford Community High School, Bedford, Iowa in 1968 and from Northwest Missouri State University in 1974. Following graduation, he relocated to the Kansas City area where he worked in marketing and sales for the past twenty years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Annette Jackson in 1994.

Survivors include his father, Mack Jackson of Nixa, MO; one brother, Mike Jackson and his wife, Angie of Springfield, MO; one sister, Emma Lee and husband, Jeff Hurst of Forsyth, MO; one nephew and several nieces.

Memorials may be sent to either of the two churches.

Born May 20,1935, in Doltham, to Donald R. Sr. and Marie Wells Martin, he was a farmer.

He married Zona Jane Berry, July 16,1957, in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mr. Martin was a graduate of Maryville R-II High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was of the Baptist faith. 

Survivors include his wife of Maryville; two sons, Jimmie D. Martin Jr. of Burlington Junction, and Kyle D. Martin of Maryville; one daughter, Cheryl King of Blue Springs; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. Martin Sr. of Burlington Junction; one brother, Donald R. Martin Jr. of Clearmont; one sister, Marilyn Slagle of Maryville; eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Friday, at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Emma Porter, 93, Maryville, died Thursday, July 13, 1995, at Parkdale Manor Nursing Home, Maryville.

Born Sept. 8, 1901, in Burlington Junction, to Marion James and Eva Alice Crawford Edwards, she was a homemaker.  

She married John Lanning Porter, Jan. 20,1915, in Maryville.

A lifetime resident of Nodaway County, Ms. Porter had been a resident of Maryville since 1937. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; twin infant sons; one brother, Elmer Edwards; and one sister, Lou Tishie Dallenbach.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Wholford of Maryville, and Beulah Cummins of Bellevue, Neb.; two sons, John J. Porter of Maryville and Donald D. Porter, Independence; one half-sister, Mary Workman Reynolds of San Diego; 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation is currently under way at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Graveside Services will be held at 10:30a.m., Saturday, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville, with the Rev. Joyce Nicholas officiating.

Ray Nelson Ripley, 60, Savannah, died Friday, June 16, 1995, at a Leavenworth, Kan., hospital.

Born Dec. 25, 1934, southeast of Graham, to Ralph N. and Viola Brooke Ripley, he had worked for United Telephone Company and Turner Construction, both of Maryville, and had been employed as a mechanic with the Chevrolet dealership in Savannah before retiring.

He married Judy L. Landfather, Dec. 15,1957, in Graham.

Mr. Ripley was a 1952 graduate of Graham High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and had resided in the Graham and Maryville areas, until moving to Savannah in 1971. He was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy Ray Ripley, and his parents.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Eddie L. Rice of St. Joseph; one daughter, Rhonda West of Wathena, Kan.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., Sunday, at Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah.

Graveside Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, at Kyle Cemetery, Graham.

Arrangements are under the direction of Breit & Hawkins Funeral Home, Savannah.

A. B. Sowers Dies; Was Farmer Near Hopkins

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Hopkins for A. [bner] B. Sowers, 85-year-old retired farmer, who died at 1 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the home of his son, Dale Sowers, of near Hopkins.

The pastor, Rev. W. H. Hansford, will officiate.  Burial will be in the Hopkins cemetery.

Mr. Sowers was born October 11, 1858, and had resided at the present residence sixty years. He was married to Elizabeth Eads, who preceded him in death. Mr. Sowers was a member of the Methodist church. He is survived by two other sons, C. [larence] O. Sowers, Murdock, Kas., and Harley Sowers, Oxnard, Calif.
