Scott, Mrs C.O. - Mrs Walter Stevenson of Tarkio received word of the death of her sister, Mrs C.O. Scott of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Nodaway county, which occurred August 30 [1940] in a San Diego hospital. Her death followed a long illness.

Mrs Scott is survived by a daughter, Mrs Morton Disney, San Diego; one son, Guy Scott, El Centro, Calif; one grandson, Charles Robert Scott, and the sister, Mrs Stevens. Mr Scott died last December.

Sherry, Vera Darlene - Ravenwood - Vera Darlene Sherry, 71, of Ravenwood, passed from this life on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at her home.

Born on February 29, 1936 in Gentry County, Missouri she was the daughter of the late Raymond & Mamie (Stuart) Mattson.

She was a member of the Ravenwood Christian Church and the American Red Cross.

She was a retired grocer and former owner of the Sherry Grocery.

She is survived by her devoted husband, C.B. Sherry, whom she married on August 19, 1956 in Stanberry, MO, loving children, Steven Sherry, Maryville, Doug Sherry and wife Barb, Conception Junction, MO, Martin Sherry and wife Tina, Ravenwood, Nancy Fratzke and husband Tom, Broken Arrow, OK, daughter-in-law, Patricia Sherry, widow of Bryan Sherry, brother, Ervin Mattson and wife Harriette, Stanberry, Eleven grandchildren & many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Bryan Sherry.

Shewey, James W. Shewey, 97, of Burlington Junction, Missouri, passed away Saturday night, October 14, 2006 at Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri.

He was born January 9, 1909, at Norton, Kansas. He lived in Quitman for 27 years before moving to Burlington Junction in 1983. He was a construction worker for the Labor Union and retired in 1971. He was a member of the Local #579 Labor Union and has been for over 50 years.
He was married to Leona Opal Hatcher, June 25, 1938, at Rock Port, Missouri and she preceded him in death in 1994.

He was also preceded by a son, Jerry Shewey in 2002, a grandson, Kenneth Shewey, six brothers, Wardie, Lee, Peter, George and Arthur and an infant brother and two sisters, Nettie, Yonke and Ruth Saathoff. He is survived by three children, Kenneth and Erika Shewey, Skidmore, Missouri, Mary and Bob Porter, Burlington Junction, Missouri and Dorothy and Lowell Dean Vanfosson, Maryville, Missouri; a sister, Margaret Belt, Lebanon, Missouri; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Missouri, Tuesday, October 17, 20906 at 11:00 a.m. Burial was in the Quitman Cemetery, Quitman, Missouri. Visitation was held 7-8 Monday, October 16, 2006 at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Quitman Cemetery.

Shultz, Robert LaMont, 72, Excelsior Springs [Missouri], died Feb. 17, 2005, at the Liberty, Mo., hospital.

Mr. Shultz was the owner of MicroImages. He had worked as chief of security for Job Corps. He retired from the Army as first sergeant after 21 years of service to his country.

Born in Thayer, Mo., on April 4, 1932, he was a member of Pisgah Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. and Marjorie M. Brown Shultz.

Simmons, Delano Eugene - Maryville - Delano Eugene Simmons, 69, of Maryville, passed from this life on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at the Village Care Center.

Born on November 16, 1937 in Braggs, Oklahoma he was the son of the late Calvin B. & Beulah (Howard) Simmons.

He was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic Church.

He was the owner and operator of Simmons Village Restaurant & Deli for 26 years and formerly was the Food Service Director at Northwest Missouri State University.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Bernella Rose (Perk) Simmons, whom he married on January 31, 1957 in Sioux City, Iowa, loving daughters, Mary Simmons & Brenda Scott, both of Maryville, a sister, Delphia Reed, South Sioux City, NE, grandsons, Brad Simmons, Jason Laws, granddaughters, Tiffany Laws, Jennifer Tennihill, & Kim Tennihill. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, George A. Simmons, sister, Neta Simmons Oviatt.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the St. Gregory Catholic Church, Maryville. Final Resting Place will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Maryville.

Born on January 29, 1936 in Maryville, Missouri he was the son of the late Jess & Ethel (Pope) Slagle.

He was of the Protestant Faith.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Maryville.

He retired from N.E.B.S. after 18 years, prior to that he worked in construction.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Marilyn Kay (Martin) Slagle, whom he married on October 6, 1956 in Maryville, loving children, Mark D. Slagle and wife Kathleen, Maryville, Christy Schmitz and husband Steve, Parnell, MO, Stan Slagle, Maryville, son-in-law, Jim Adwell, Ravenwood, of his late daughter, Debra Adwell, sister, Betty Simmons, Ravenwood, Eleven Grandchildren & Nine Great Grandchildren, a nephew & a niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Debra Adwell.

Smith, Betty Logan, age 63, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Sunday afternoon, October 2, 2005, at Garden Valley Manor Care Center, Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born near Burlington Junction, Missouri, November 8, 1941, to Wayne and Marjorie (Merriett) Logan. She lived in Skidmore as a young person before her family moved to Clearmont where she graduated from High School in 1959. She attended classes at Northwest Missouri State University for two years.

She lived and worked in Maryville, Missouri from 1960-1981 when she move to Kansas City. She was a cost accountant.

She is survived by two daughters, Deanna Bailey, Leavenworh, Kansas and Debra Taylor, Kansas City, Missouri; two brothers, Larry Logan, Ridgeway, Missouri and Mike Logan, Clearmont, Missouri; sister, Joanne Farris, Osawatomie, Kansas, aunt, Joyce Drennen, Yorktown, Iowa; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter.

Funeral services are planned for Thursday, October 6, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at the Barr-Merrick Funeral Chapel, Burlington Junction, Missouri.. A private burial will be held at the Ohio Cemetery, Burlington Junction, Missouri. Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home just before the service. Spangler, Emery L., 92, of Elmo, Missouri, passed away Friday, September 30, 2005 at Village Care Center, Maryville, MO.

He was born August 9, 1913, near Burlington Junction, MO to Ed and Rita VanMeter Spangler, He has lived his entire life in the Elmo area. He graduated from High School at Elmo in 1932.

He married Frances Hamilton, July 16, 1932, at Elmo, MO and they lived on the family farm until 1979 when they moved into Elmo. He was a farmer and retired from farming in 1978. As a young man he worked for the Geodetic survey, before returning to the area to farm.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Elmo; a charter member of the Elmo Lion's Club; a member of the Elmo Flying Club; the Community Betterment Club; a board member for the low rent housing, Mill Creek Manor; township committeeman for Lincoln Township; Boy Scout leader; Salvation Army; Maryville Men's Forum and loved to travel.

He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Ecker and her husband, Gary, Elmo, MO; and Donna Piepoint and her husband Burdette, Maryville, MO; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Frances in 2003; two brothers, Glen Spangler and Eldon Spangler and four sisters, Eva Martin, Etta Walters, Ina Hahn and Coleda Hamilton.

Memorial services are planned for October 22, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Elmo, MO. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Burial of the cremains will be at the LaMar Cemetery, Elmo, MO.

Born on January 1, 1931 in Hamburg, Iowa, he was the son of the late John Ermal & Goldie Ruth (Collins) Sportsman. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edith Irene (Murphy) Sportsman.

He was a Veteran in the US Army serving in Korea. He was a member of the Maitland United Methodist Church and the Maitland-Graham American Legion Post 256.

He was a retired plumber.

Sportsman, Kenneth L., age 67, of Graham, Missouri, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2005, at the Veterans Hospital, Leavenworth, Kansas.
He was born April 18, 1937, at Bolckow, Missouri, to Ermal and Goldie (Collins) Sportsman. He graduated from the Graham High School in 1955.
Kenneth was a farmer and has lived in the Graham area his entire life. He served with the United States Army in 1960-1961 with the 208th Military Police.
He married Marilyn Pitts, August 18, 1962, at Burlington Junction, Missouri and they have shared forty-two years of marriage.
Kenneth is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; a son, Kevin and his wife Lynette Sportsman, of Omaha, Nebraska; a daughter, Kelly Messer and her husband Brian of Circleville, Kansas; two brother, Junior Sportsman of Graham, Missouri and Raymond Sportsman of Maitland, Missouri; two sisters, Mary Ann Linville of Graham Missouri and Dorothy Morin of Brookfield, Missouri; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She married Joe A. Stark, June 20, 1970, in Westwood, N.J.

A resident of Sheridan for 20 years, Mrs Stark was a graduate of New York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Survivors include her husband, Joe, of Sheridan; a son, Jesse J. Stark of Sheridan; and her mother, Velna Zimnoch of New Milford, N.J.

Mrs Stark's body has been cremated.

Stone, Frances Frauline, age 102 of Clarinda, IA passed away Friday afternoon, December 23, 2005 at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda, Iowa. She was born September 29, 1903 the daughter of Jesse and Zillie Melvina (Irving) Sheirbon. Frances graduated from Maryville High Schoo,l, Maryville, MO. She was united in marriage to Don Wilson and they had four children: Dennis & Donnis, Junior, and Bill. She worked as an aide at the M.H.I and was the first women employed Lisle Corp being hired during World War II. She was a homemaker, a babysitter, and she also took care of her parents and her three sons. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; sons Dennis Lee Wilson in 1990; Junior Dale Wilson 1995; William Oliver "Bill" Wilson 1999; and an infant daughter, Donnis Larue; brothers Homer and wife Beatrice Sheirbon, and Stanley Sheirbon. Survivors include grandson William "Butch" Wilson and his wife Kim of Bellevue, Ne; sister-in-law Helen Sheirbon; grandchildren of Florida, nieces, nephews and friends.

Stone, Lorena Ellen, 85 years of age of Sheridan, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 1994, at a St Joseph hospital.

Born in Pierre, South Dakota, Mrs Stone had lived in the Sheridan area since the 1930’s.

She was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church and American Legion Auxiliary, Sheridan.

In 1925, she married Victor Stone in Pickering, Mo, he died in 1955.

Surviving are three sons, Denis Stone of Salem, Ar, Paul Stone, Independence, Mo, and Dean Stone, Lone Jack, Mo; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Stutesman, Grace Hawk - Kate Grace Hawk Stutesman, 94, died Friday, Oct 15, 1993 at a nursing home in Vancouver, Wash.

Born Aug 10, 1899 in Parnell to George B. and Addie Rauch Hawk, Parnell, she was a homemaker.

She married Eugene (Gene) Stutesman on Aug 10, 1921 and moved from Missouri in 1935 to Hoquiam, Wash. The couple moved to Vancouver in the early 1940s.

Ms [Mr?]Stutesman worked as a burner's helper in the Vancouver Shipyard during War World II.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Sullenberger, Naomi Sherrl Morehouse – Naomi Morehouse was born in Villisca, Iowa October 2, 1940 to Robert Truman and Coral Lorene Jackson Morehouse. It was noted at birth that Naomi had two broken legs and two broken arms. Later, her condition was found to be Ostegenesis Imperfection or OI. The Doctor told the family that she could not survive, and fed her only water the first week. Naomi showed her unquenchable spirit even then and surprised them all by surviving. The family was told that she wouldn’t live past the age of six or seven.

She was home tutored by a teacher from the Kendrick School and graduated from eighth grade and was the Taylor Co Valedictorian in 1955. Attended Villisca High School via telephone line to her home and graduated in 1959. She  attended other trade schools and worked at many different trades until she became a data processor for the State of Iowa in the license plate department. She graduated from Computer School in Des Moines with high honors in 1990.

She was indeed a survivor and in describing Naomi, family and friends use adjectives like “determined,” “amazingly independent” and feisty. Her tiny size of slightly over 3 feet was not in proportion to her giant spirit. Learning to drive her own car which was specially devised for her with hand controls and a special seat.

She married Jim Sullenberger August 18th, 1990 and they made their home in Des Moines till her death. Her funeral was in Des Moines and burial was in a Bedford Cemetery, Friday afternoon.

She was baptized in the Advent Christian church, August 29, 1960 with Rev Boswell officiating. She went to heaven to be with the Lord, whom she loved, July 10, 2001. Survivors include her husband Jim of Des Moines, one sister Neva Lucille Morehouse of Stanton, one brother Dean Morehouse of St Joe, Mo., many nieces, nephews, friends and one special friend Nelda Rohem. Three aunts Ruby Gross, Adaline Campbell and Sue Morehouse.

Delbert Leroy Surplus, son of Charles Surplus and Jessie Brummett Surplus was born at Parnell, Mo, September 25, 1913. He grew to maturity in the Parnell and Sheridan communities where he attended the public school and was a part of the various community activies.

On November 12, 1938 he was united in marriage to Garland Naill at Creston, Iowa and they have made their home on the farm in the Blockton area with the exception of one year lived in Bedford, Iowa. They had shared 50 years together.

His life's occupation was farming. he enjoyed the farm life and had been a part of the change it had made since the time that he was married. He met the challenge of the times; the seasons; the methods of both tilling and conserving the soil; he was a patient man and his pleasing personality made him one who was able to make friends and keep them in his large circle of friendship. One of his great pleasures was pitching horse shoes; and in this activity he was able to extend his friendship beyond the usual boundaries of his home community.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Elby Surphus and two sisters, Thelma Nelson and Elma Berg.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Garland of the home; two sisters, Estelle Naill and Eloise Smyser; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Born in Oxford [Missouri] to Charles and Nora Wilson Cox, the family lived many years in Parnell [Missouri]. She graduated from Parnell High School.

She married Marvin O. "Pluve" Surplus on July 3, 1929. They lived in Burlington Junction before moving to Twin Falls, Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and five brothers.

Survivors include three sons, Robert, Parkland, Wash; Harland, Wendall, Idaho and Jimmy, Yelm, Wash; twin sisters, Cora Bodenstab, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Clora Matthews, Filer, Idaho; several grandchildren.

Swaney, Jean, 87, passed away, Wednesday, August 9, 2006, at Parkdale Manor Care Center, in Maryville, Missouri. Jean was born in Pickering, Missouri, August 19, 1918, the daughter of Charles G. and Bertha L. (Sadler) Swinford. She was a graduate of Pickering High School. She was a member of the Pickering Christian Church. Jean married Albert Maurice Swaney, April 4, 1936, in Maryville. They farmed in the Pickering and Hopkins area until 1997, when they moved to Maryville. They celebrated sixty-six years of marriage in 2002, prior to Albert’s death in that year. Jean was an artist, well known for her oil paintings, including landscapes, still life and a number of commissioned paintings of homes and farmsteads. Her work won awards at various art shows. Jean also pursued various other artistic interests over the years, such as leather tooling and ceramics. For many years she sang for funerals in the area. From her early years and throughout her life she demonstrated a dedication to helping others in times of sickness and hardship. Being a good neighbor was very important. She was preceded in death by her husband, son, Charles Edward (Ed) Swaney her parents and sister, Pauline Smith. Survivors include her older son, Gary Swaney and his wife, Barbara (Anderson) Swaney of Sioux City, Iowa; daughter in law, Margaret (Barrett) Swaney of Osceola, Iowa; two grandsons and their wives: Kevin and Teresa Swaney, Sioux City; Garth and Beth Swaney, Frankfort, Illinois; two granddaughters, Lori Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska; Dyan Swaney, West Allis, Wisconsin and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, August 12 at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville. Burial was at White Oak Cemetery, Pickering, Missouri. Szabo, Frank I. - Frank I. Szabo, 42, of Platte City, passed from this life on Saturday, April 7, 2007 at the Kansas City Hospice House.

Born on May 30, 1964 in New Brunswick, NJ he was the son of the late Joseph Szabo and Elizabeth Gizela (Som) Szabo of Bonner Springs, KS.

He attended Faith Bible Fellowship in Atchison KS. He graduated from Delone High School in Hanover, PA. and from DeVry University in Columbia, OH. He was a successful computer consultant and founder and owner of Albion Systems Inc, Platte City, Mo. In addition to his mother he is survived by his devoted wife, Christy Rose (Schafer) Szabo whom he married on March 4, 2000, loving son, Zachary Joseph Szabo of the home, sister, Elizabeth Schroder, Bonner Springs, KS, brothers, Joe Szabo Reisterstown, MD, Chuck Szabo, Columbia, PA, Steve Szabo, Kennesaw, GA, four nieces and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
