Eckert, Leland Eugene - Leland Eckert, 65, Parnell, Missouri passed away Monday, October 5, 2009 at Heartland Regional Medical Center, St Joseph, Missouri.

He was born April 29, 1944, in Grant Nebraska, the son of Lawrence and Gwendolyn (Hammond) Eckert. After his schooling he worked for Snow Implement, Grant City, Missouri;
Hull & Scott Implement in Maryville, Missouri; as a self employed mechanic and farmer.

He attended the Gaynor Community Church and he was a member of the Curry-Richardson-Sparks–Waldeier American Legion Post #528 in Parnell.

Leland was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Larry Dean Eckert.

Survivors include a daughter: Shelley (John) Steinman, Hopkins, Missouri; sons: Tim (Melissa) Eckert, Sheridan, Missouri and Scott Eckert, Hopkins; two grandchildren; Tyler and Kelsi Steinman; two brothers: Keith and Carl Eckert, Parnell, Missouri.

Visitation is 6-7:30 pm Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Services will be 2pm Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Price Funeral Home, Maryville.

Burial will be in Long Branch Cemetery, Gaynor, Missouri.

Military services will be conducted by the Curry Richardson Sparks Waldeier American Legion Post #528.
Eckery, Virginia J. Walker - Virginia J. Eckery, 88, of Ravenwood, passed from this life on Monday, February 1, 2010 at the St. Francis Hospital.

Born on June 27, 1921 in Isadora, MO she was the daughter of the late Willie Clay & Caroline (Ray) Walker.

She was a member of the Ravenwood Christian Church and formerly a member of the Eastern Star of Ravenwood where she held the office of Worthy Matron.

She is survived by two devoted daughters, Barbara Rose Summa, Rayville, MO and Carol Ann Heller, Maryville, MO, sisters, Rosella Lewis, Ravenwood, Jean Brown, Ravenwood, a brother, Donald Walker, Ravenwood in addition 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, nine brothers and sisters, Sylvia Merckling, L.B. Walker, Wilma McClure, Duane Walker, Jenetta Hammer Parker, Joe Walker, Doris Vaughn, Darlene Holiday, Jerard Walker, Arthur Walker and Pauline Gross.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Ravenwood Christian Church. Final Resting Place will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ravenwood. Memorials may be made to Ministry Center, Maryville.

Elbert, Mary Esther, Sister, OSB - Sister Mary Esther Elbert, OSB, age 96, of Clyde, Missouri, died Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Benedictine Convent of Perpetual Adoration, Clyde, Missouri.

Born September 4, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Michael Andrew and Clara Belle (Kanapple) Elbert in Sedro-Woolley, Washington.

Sister Mary Esther was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Sr. Mary Johanna Elbert and Josephine Elbert Smernoff; and three brothers; Paul, Anthony and Bernard Elbert.

She entered the convent February 4, 1933. Her first vows were April 18, 1934 with her perpetual vows being April 22, 1939. She returned to Clyde in 1996 after serving in convents of her order in Mundelin, San Diego, Tucson and St. Louis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, April 14, at the Convent Chapel, at 7:30 AM. in Clyde.
The Wake Service will be Sunday, April 13, 2008, 7:15 PM at the Convent Chapter Room, Clyde. Burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Clyde.

Emery, Betty Jean Tibbetts - Betty Jean (Tibbetts) Emery, 73, Maryville, Missouri died Thursday, January 15, 2009 at St Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri.

She was born June 30, 1935 in Hopkins, Missouri, the daughter of Charles Martin and Alice Gertrude (Smith) Tibbetts.

Betty married Forest “Gene” Emery January 24, 1953 in Maryville. They owned and operated the Gene Emery Trash Hauling Service, Maryville.

Mrs. Emery was preceded in death by her husband: Gene on May 6, 2006; a daughter: Virginia Billings, a grandson: Bryan Allen and sister: Helen Back.

Survivors include her children: Tony Emery, Terre Haute, Indiana; Terry Emery, Maryville and Karen Giesken, Parnell, Missouri; her mother, Alice Tibbetts, Maryville; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; brothers: Bob Tibbetts, Grant City, Missouri; Marvin Tibbetts, Sedalia, Missouri; Wayne Tibbetts, Kansas City, Missouri and Steve Tibbetts, San Diego, California; sisters: Shirley Judd, Belleville, Illinois and Janet Olney, Pickering, Missouri.

Visitation is 7-8pm Friday, January 16, 2009 at Price Funeral Home.

Engle, John Thomas -

John Thomas Engle, 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2009. A devoted husband, brother, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife Betty (Morehouse) Engle, brother Milton Engle, Jr., sister Lucy Potts, son Stephen Engle, daughter Laurie (Engle) Marlowe, son-in-law Chris Marlowe and two talented and lovely granddaughters; MacKenzie Kate and Grace Elizabeth Marlowe.

Born on April Fools Day, 1923, in Sheridan, Missouri; John grew up on the family farm, assisting with the family business of raising and showing purebred Hereford cattle as part of the storied Jesse Engle & Sons cattle breeding business.

In 1940, he graduated from Sheridan High School and shortly thereafter, relocated with his parents Grace and Milton Engle, to Hopkins, Missouri. In November of 1944 he followed his older brothers, Allyn and Milton Jr., into the Navy, serving as a Specialist 2nd Class. In 1945, John joined thousands of other active military personnel marching in President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s funeral procession through the streets of Washington, D.C.

After the war, John returned to Hopkins. On February 22, 1947, he married Betty Morehouse at the United Methodist Church in Maryville, Missouri. The couple eventually purchased a farm west of Hopkins, where they have resided the past 58 years.

After losing their first child (John David) at birth, the couple welcomed son Stephen in 1950 and daughter, Laurie, in 1963. In addition to farming and working for LMP Steel and Wire for twenty-five years, John continued raising and showing purebred Hereford cattle. He also enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing and attending local dances with Betty. Last year, the couple celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 22, at the Swanson-Price Funeral Chapel in Hopkins, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in John’s honor to SSM Hospice of Northwest Missouri or the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church.

 

Erickson, Marlous Denton - Marlous Denton Erickson, 80, Bolckow, Missouri died, January 13, 2009 at his home.

He was born March 12, 1928 in Maryville, Missouri, the son of William Harold and Bessie
Chloe (Brewer) Erickson. He graduated from Bolckow High School in 1946. On April 5, 1948 he married Mary Lou Barnes in Winslow, Arizona.

A member of the Bolckow United Methodist Church, Mr. Erickson was a farmer, Implement Dealer and Truck Driver.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Lou on December 28, 1993; his parents and brother,
Warren Harold Erickson.

Survivors include a son: Richard D “Rick” Erickson, Bolckow and daughter: Sherry Miller, St Joseph, Missouri; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 6-7pm Friday, January 16, 2009 at Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville, Missouri.

Graveside Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Bennett Lane Cemetery, Savannah, Missouri.

 

Espey, Joseph Eugene -

Joseph Eugene Espey, age 84, of Maryville, died April 8, 2010, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born May 12, 1925, in Maryville, to Ivan Allison and Helen Kate (Powell) Espey.

Joe attended Scudder Rural School, southwest of Maryville and graduated from Maryville High School in 1943. In 1945, Joe was elected one of four National Vice-Presidents of the Future Farmers of America. He was also one of the first four International Farm Exchange Youth to tour England.

Joe served with the 82nd Airborne Rangers at Fort Benning, Georgia and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He served six years in the Army Reserves Engineer Battallion with two weeks of intense training each summer at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin.

On March 27, 1955, Joe married Joann Owens of Hopkins, Missouri. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Hopkins and attended the First Christian Church of Maryville.

In 1968, Joe joined the Nodaway Valley Bank as their Agricultural Representative. He graduated from the Harvard School of Banking, retiring from NVB in 1988, as Senior Vice-President. He continued to serve on the Nodaway Valley Bank Board of Directors.

In 1976, Joe was cited for his dedicated service to the Missouri Extension by the President of the University of Missouri. In 1982, he participated in the People to People program as an Ambassador to China. During his stay in China, he visited communal farming operations and visited six Universities throughout China.

In 1988, Joe was inducted into the Nodaway County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Joe was also a member and Past-President of the Maryville Rotary Club. He is a life member of the Nodaway County Historical Society.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard Espey.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joann; one son, Steve Carlin Espey, Maryville; three daughters, Jeanne Ann Attema and husband, Menno, Platte City, Missouri; Amy Jo Espey-Wilson and husband Jeff, Overland Park, Kansas; Joyce Ilene Allen and husband Jeff, Kansas City, Missouri and eleven grandchildren. Also surviving Joe is one brother James Espey of Maryville, two sisters: Sarah Fisher, Denver, Colorado and Kathryn Jones, Maryville and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Maryville First Christian Church.

Visitation will be 12-00-2:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2010, with funeral services at 2:00 p.m. at the Maryville First Christian Church.

Burial will be in Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, with military services conducted by the November Team of the Missouri

Evans, Warren Floyd - Warren Floyd Evans was born January 18, 1924 in Ravenwood, Missouri, the son of Floyd and Nellie (Swearingen) Evans. At age 13, during the Depression, his family moved to the Clearmont area where Warren attended and graduated from Clearmont High School in a class of twelve. On January 18, 1945 Warren was united in marriage to the late Emma Jean Milligan in Troy, Kansas.
Warren was heavily involved in the city of Clearmont. He took on many responsibilities to the community as a president of a committee or a board member. In the early 1960s, Warren helped fix and restore the ball park and build the concession stand. From 1973 to 1978 he was the President of the Clearmont Community Club as a part of the Little Red School House. He was a member of the Hoof n’ Horn Saddle Club where he rode horses. He served on the Township Board of Trustees for Clearmont. Warren helped out many family members and took care of them in times of trouble. He took on the role of brother and father to many friends.
Warren was a devoted family man, father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, farmer and friend. For a brief time in his life he worked at Lisle Corporation to later find the farm is where his heart was. He worked as a farmer for the majority of his life supporting his family and doing what he loved. From farming the land with his horses to raising chickens, hogs and cattle, he was a farmer through and through. Warren participated in the bowling league in Clarinda and went to tournaments all over Iowa with his team. He was a hardworking man spending lots of time in his shed tinkering around. Warren was also very good at woodworking and made household furniture that is still in the family. Out of all of the joys in his life, his family was the top priority. They had family dinners every Sunday and got together at different houses each week. Warren loved playing checkers with his grandchildren. He never told them but whenever he lost it was because he “let” them win. Warren was a retired farmer but still had one specific chore to do and that was to feed and tend to the wild cats.
Warren Evans unexpectedly passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010, at the age of 86, at his farm.
Left to cherish his memories are his daughters : Vickie Clark of Glenwood, Gail Gray of Clarinda, Susan and Jeff Courtier of Glenwood and Kim and Don Haffner of Clarinda; grandchildren Lisa Clark, Chad Clark, Michelle and Mitch Holmes, Terry W. Haffner, Adam Courtier, Brett Borden, Caleb Borden, Garrett Borden, Crystal Murphy, Joshua and Lisa Haffner and Stephanie Haffner; great grandchildren Emma Clark, Tyler Holmes, Kyle Holmes, Ethan Haffner, Emilee Haffner, Evan Murphy and Jayden Haffner; sisters Neva Nicholas of Burlington Junction, MO, Meredith Sherlock of Burlington Junction, MO, and Ruth Evans of Maryville, Mo; sister in law Jane Evans of New Market. Warren is also survived by the sons he ‘never’ had: Marvin Evans, Ted Sherlock and Terry Nicholas.
Preceding Warren in death are his parents, loving wife Emma Jean, infant son Kenneth Warren; brother Theron Evans, brothers in law Pete Sherlock and Robert Nicholas.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Don Barnett officiating. Interment will be at Clearmont Cemetery, Clearmont, MO. Everhart, Lois Lavonne Carpenter - Lois Lavonne Everhart 74, Hopkins, Missouri died, January 19, 2009 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa.

She was born June 19, 1934 in Elmo, Missouri, the daughter of Dana and Pearl (Goodwin) Carpenter. Lois received her GED and she had been a clerk at Wilson Grocery Store and at Shehan's Clothing Shop in Hopkins. Mrs. Everhart had been a member of the Elmo, Missouri Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Jesse Everhart (June 27, 2005); infant sons: Donnie and Ronnie Everhart; sisters: Wilma Hunter, Velma Carpenter and Minnie Lee Carpenter and brothers: Charley, Byron, Galen and Wendell Carpenter.

Survivors include her children and their spouses: Jesse (Linda) Everhart Jr., Hopkins; Jerald (Corey) Everhart, Hopkins; Jeanne (Larry) Vorhies, New Market, Iowa; Janet (Al) Hoover, Pickering, Missouri and Julie (Chris) Markley, Hopkins; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters: Joan Sloan, Burlington Junction, Missouri and Dorothy Burch, Shenandoah, Iowa; brothers: Landis Carpenter, St Joseph, Missouri; Doyle Carpenter, Elmo

Everhart, William D. - Bill was born on November 7, 1923 near Conception Missouri in Nodaway County. He lived most of the life except for 1957-1983 where he lived in St. Joseph, Missouri

He was married to Clara A. Huff on December 19, 1939. She passed away on March 29, 1989. His second marriage was to Patsy Warman Holmes on January 1, 1996.

Bill was a 50 year member of the Laura Street Baptist Church of Maryville, Missouri.

His occupation was a Carpenter and Millwright and 50 year member of The Carpenters Union Local #110 of St. Joseph.

Bill was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Master of Brotherhood Lodge #269 A.F. and A.M. of St Joseph, also dual member of Nodaway Lodge #470 A.F. and A.M. of Maryville,
Scottish Rite Freemasonry, St Joseph, Past Patron of Pearl Chapter #529 O.E. S., St. Joseph, also dual member and Past Patron of Rosanna Chapter #262 O.E.S. Maryville, James Edward Gray American Legion Post #100 and the Seth-Ray David VFW Post #442, both of Maryville, past member of The York Rite and The Moila Shrine Temple of St. Joseph, Lions Club, Gentry, Missouri, and the Eagles Lodge #3669, Maryville, Missouri.
