Pvt Leland T. Oakerson of Maryville, recently was transferred to Seattle, Wash, where he contacted Capt E.R. Coats, former agriculture instructor at the Maryville highschool. Capt Coats made inquiry about his former students. Mrs Raymond Sherlock has received word that her husband, who has been stationed in North Africa, is now in Italy. Mr and Mrs Ed Cummins of Burlington Junction have received a New Year's cablegram from their nephew, Frank E. McKenzie, who is with the signal radio aviation group. He has been stationed in the Southwest Pacific seven months. Glenn Marr, specialist second class in the navy, who has been in school at Bainbridge, Mass, has been in Chicago, Ill, several days where he received an appointment to Fayette in the physical education department. He arrived in Graham Thursday to visit his wife and son and Mrs Marr's parents, Mr and Mrs F.P. Fleming. Mrs Marr and son will accompany her husband to Fayette. Merritt, James Lee, machinist's mate second class of the navy, left Thursday for the navy base at Norfolk, Va., after spending the Christmas holidays with his foster-parents, Mr and Mrs John L. Bosch of Pickering. He had a fifteen-day leave. Pvt Harley Antrim, who has been on Manuevers in California, is spending a fifteen day furlough with his wife and baby of St Joseph and his parents, Mr and Mrs Frank Antrim of Ravenwood and other relatives and friends. Lieut. Eugene Luther son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Luther of Maitland, is now stationed at the air field at Santa Ana, Calif, having been classified as a fighter pilot. Lt Luther was graduated from the Maitland high school and entered service in September, 1942. He received his commssion and wings in the marine air corps in September 1943. |

Morton Holman, former editor of the Maitland Herald, who was sworn into the navy as an ensign December 29, will report to the Universit of Arizona Tucson, January 15 for preliminary training. |
Cpl Fay Florea, jr, who has been spending a fifteen-day furlough with his parents Mr and Mrs Fay Florea of Pickering, left yesterday for Camp Atterbury, Ind. Paul Tudder, son of Mr and Mrs Boyd Tudder of Maryville, who is attending an army specialized school at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colo, is spending a nine-day furlough with his parents. Lieut (jg) L.Q. Bricston? left Saturday for Annapolis, Md, after spending ten days with his wife and sons Charles and Dick. Corpus Christi, Tex - Robert Patrick Heekin of 815 North Main, Maryville, Mo, graduated December 31 from Naval Air Training Center, Corpus Christi, and was commissioned an ensign in the US Naval Reserve. He received his preliminary flight instruction at the Hutchinson, Kas, reserve air base. Mr and Mrs O.W. Jones of Maryville received a cablegram yesterday from their son Pvt Corwin Jones, who is stationed in New Guinea, wishing them a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. The message also stated that he was well. Pfc Marion Still, who is an expert gunner, stationed at Camp Phillips, Kas arrived Saturday to spend a furlough at the home of his parents, Mr and Mrs Charles Still of Maryville. Cpl David Suetterlin left Saturday for Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md, after spending five days here. He had been called home by the death of Mrs Suetterlin's mother, Mrs Carl Birdsell of Ravenwood. Mr and Mrs James W. Smith of Pickering have received word that their son James E. Smith who is a navigator in the army air corps, has been promoted to a first lieutenant. Lt Smith was recently transferred from North Africa to Italy. Billy Tilson son of Mr and Mrs Harry Tilson, Maryville, reported to his folks, the first letter in some time, that he recently had been based on land, the first time for several months. Young Tilson is rated as a musician second-class and is stationed on a barge aircraft carrier operating in the Pacific. He also reported meeting Bobby Seckington, son of Mr and Mrs Dave Seckington, Maryville, shortly after landing. Pharmacist's Mate Second Class and Mrs OscarV. Pugsley left yesterday for San Francisco, Calif., after spending a month's leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs Oscar V. Pugsley Sr. He will be stationed on Treasure Island. Pugsley had been at Guadalcanal the past ten months. Mr and Mrs W.R. Miller of Burlington Junction have received word from their son, Aviation Cadet Charles R. Miller, that he has been classified as a bombardier and is stationed at Nashville, Tenn. Pfc Carl W. Ward of Camp Atterbury, Ind is spending a furlough with his parents, Mr and Mrs Vernon B. Ward of Skidmore. Donald Hart, who has been in service and stationed at Temple, Tex, has returned to his home at Skidmore after receiving a medical discharge. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J.E. Hart of Skidmore. Lieut Donald A. Moyer of the Marine Air Corps is spending twelve days with his parents, Mr and Mrs Ralph Moyer. Lieut Moyer is stationed at Milton, Fla, as an instructor. |
