John was born to John and Edna Armstrong in the Harmony area of Jonesborough
TN. He had one older brother and one younger sister. His older brother
also did service during WW1, but not in a combat role like John. John was a
career Army man, he joined up first on 7 Feb 1902 and fought in the
Philippine Insurrection with Company B, 27th Infantry. During his time
their he fought in a number of skirmishes and engagements on the Philippine
Islands. After that on 3 Jun 1903, he was stationed at Corabel Messic,
Manila.
He came back home in 1906, while on leave enroute to Jefferson Barracks, MO.
While here, he professed his faith in the Methodist Church. While there in
Missouri, he was honorably discharged and then re-enlisted on 28 Mar 1914 at
RA Jefferson Barracks and the rest you know from his info sheet.
As for a family there, I haven't been able to establish one, but he did
spend most of his Army time there in Missouri. Neither do I know why he was
brought back there for burial. His mother, father and brother are all
buried together here at Logan's Chapel and his sister in Fairview, also here
with her family. As far as I can tell, both brothers were bachelors, but
maybe you can shed some light on that.
