Balster, Kathryne Renata Selvidge - Funeral services for Kathryne Balster age 86, of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Shelby, Iowa, who entered into peace Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 7, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church, Shelby, Iowa with Pastor Brian Bontrager officiating. There will be open visitation at Ritchie Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the First Presbyterian Church, Shelby, Iowa. Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery.
Kathryne Renata Selvidge Balster of Shelby, Iowa and recently of Clarinda, Iowa was born on January 1, 1925 in Wichita Falls, Texas to Loyd and Fannie Davidson Selvidge. She gratefully entered into rest on a beautiful spring morning, Sunday April 3, 2011 at the age of 86.
Kay, as she was fondly called, grew up, attended school, graduated and was employed in Wichita Falls. After high school she was employed as a telephone operator. The United States had just become embroiled in World War II at this time and Kay was kept very busy connecting loved ones across the country. It was during this time she met a young Air Force soldier stationed at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. Kay and a friend double-dated: Kay’s date was a tall, handsome blonde Iowa farm boy by the name of Ted Balster. The two made a striking couple and both said they knew right away, “This is the one.” Kay and Ted were married at her parents’ home on August 8, 1944.
After Ted returned from serving in the Pacific the couple moved to Shelby, Iowa. Ted resumed farming and Kay began learning how to be a farmer’s wife. She unabashedly gave her mother-in-law credit for teaching her how to cook, bake, and garden. A city girl, Kay had preferred shopping and reading books to the more mundane tasks. She never lost her love of reading but it became a luxury in between all the duties of a housewife and mother.
Kay and Ted were blessed with five sons: Jim, Steve, Larry, Kennon, and David. So the gardens became larger, the cookies more plentiful as her sons grew.
Kay and Ted loved big band music and dancing to it. When the Glenn Miller Festival began in Clarinda they rarely missed attending. They loved parking their RV under the trees at Nodaway Valley Park and taking in all the concerts. The two traveled across the United States as well, visiting children and grandchildren.
Kay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shelby and also belonged to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
In 1999, due to health reasons, Kay and Ted moved to Clarinda to the Eiler House and to be closer to their son and daughter-in-law, Kennon and Kate. After Ted’s death in 2002, Kay moved to Goldenrod Manor and resided there until her death. Kay was grateful for all the care and kindness shown her at Goldenrod even though she couldn’t express her feelings except through a smile.
If fortunate enough to have known her, you spent time with a genuine southern lady. Genteel, polite and charming, she will be greatly missed by many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Harold Selvidge, daughter-in–law Kathleen Nearman Balster, and her beloved Ted. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Jim of Atlanta, Georgia; Steve and Sherry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Larry and Gretchen of Scottsdale, Arizona; Kennon and Kate of Blanchard, Iowa; and David and Barbara of Des Moines, Iowa. Eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren continue her legacy

Marcia Jean (Fry) Younggren, 82, entered into peace on Friday, March 18, 2011, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, following a brief illness.

Marcia was born on October 13, 1928, in Hopkins, Missouri, the second eldest daughter of Floyd Charles Fry and Florence Marie (Foster) Fry. The family later moved to Clarinda, and Marcia attended school and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1946. Marcia was united in marriage to Richard Merle Bromley on July 26, 1946, and they were blessed with a son, Richard Lee Bromley on August 30, 1947. They moved to Shenandoah, and Marcia worked at Shenandoah Hospital and was a homemaker. In the early 1970’s, Marcia moved to Omaha, Nebraska and was a receptionist for OB GYN Associates. She spent many years there, and she loved her work and the people she worked with.

In the 1980’s, Marcia was introduced by mutual friends to Robert Younggren and on this “blind date”, Bob found his “Sunshine Girl”. They were married on October 10, 1987 at an old mission church in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Marcia and Bob lived on Bob’s farm in rural Essex, Iowa and Marcia converted Bob into a lover of camping. They enjoyed many years of camping and traveling experiences, going south for the winter months. The “snowbirds” enjoyed a special fondness of their many months in Gulf Shores, Alabama and many close friendships were made there while enjoying many games of Aggravation, dominoes and cards.

Marcia and Bob moved to Kimberling City, Missouri in 1994 and enjoyed many close friendships there. While living in Kimberling City, they would travel to Louisiana to spend Christmas with son, Richard and his wife, Karen, and then would travel on to Gulf Shores, Alabama to stay during the remaining winter months. In October, 2009, Marcia and Bob moved to Clarinda, and local family members were happy to see them back. Many meals and fond memories were shared together.

Marcia had a very special love for all of her pets: Peg, Danny, Gidget, Choo, Andee, Abby, Patty Ann and Dewey; and she was a supporter of her local Humane Society. Memorials may be directed to the Southwest Humane Society, 692 East LaPerla Street, Clarinda, Iowa 51632.

Preceding Marcia in death were her parents and grandparents; sisters, Betty Sipes and Yvonne (Peggy) (Borden) Lacey; brothers-in-law, Marvin Borden and Gilbert Lacey; mother-in-law, Famie Younggren; and step-son, Dennis Hanson.

Left to cherish Marcia;s memory are her husband, Robert Younggren of Clarinda; son, Richard Bromley and wife Karen of Stonewall, Louisiana; sister, Virginia Hunter and husband Bill of Clarinda, Iowa; brother-in-law, Norman Younggren and wife Marilyn of Essex, Iowa; many nieces and nephews who loved their aunt very much and many, many friends. Marcia is also greatly missed by her pets, Patty Ann and Dewey.

The Ship

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails
in the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength and I stand
and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of
white cloud just where the sea and sky
come down to mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says, “There she goes”!
Gone where? Gone from my sight...that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she
was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at that moment when someone says,
“There she goes!” there are other eyes watching her
coming and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, “There she comes”!”
Henry Jackson Van Dyke (1852-1933)

Arrangements were entrusted to the Ritchie Funeral Home of Clarinda, Iowa.
