Abdin, Mary Marie Ritz Nardini - Mary Marie Abdin was born on November 16, 1935 in a country house in Davis County, Iowa, and passed away Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011, in Olathe, Kan.
Mary Marie was the first of three daughters born to William DeMar Ritz and Anna Pauline Ritz. She graduated from Bloomfield, Iowa in 1954 and went on to become a registered nurse. She was wed to her high school sweetheart, James Nardini, in 1957. She had two children, James born in 1958 and Debra in 1961.
Mary took time away from nursing until her children were in high school. While being a great homemaker, she pursued her love of the arts making pottery and painting. She returned to work in the mid 70's when she and her husband separated. She utilized her nursing skills until she officially retired in December of 2010. Mary was an active artist at the First Art Gallery of Olathe, Kansas.
Mary is survived by her son James Nardini III, his wife Cindy, and their children Arthur James and Cole Joseph, her daughter Debra Wendorf and her husband Richard, her sister Jeannie Leyda and husband Max.

Anderson, Kay - Kathleen M. Anderson loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother was born on June 9, 1929 in Massena, Iowa, and completed her earthly journey at home on March 5, 2011.
Growing up in rural Massena, Kay graduated from high school in 1947, having been a cheerleader in a graduating class of 12. She met her husband Ted while working in Creston at the Ford dealership, and the couple was united in marriage on November 10, 1951. To this union, two sons were born, Mike and Ken.
Always a pillar of strength for her family, she settled with Ted and their two sons in Garden Grove, California where she worked for the public school system while actively participating in a variety of school, church, and community organizations. Kay was active in the Catholic Church, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, was a member of the PTA, and was always the number one supporter at Mike and Ken’s athletic events.
Kay’s family was the most important priority in her life, and after moving with her family back to Iowa, she began a long working relationship at the Shenandoah Medical Clinic where she is still known by the community as the center of all communications for the doctors, nurses, and patients of Shenandoah. She was an avid Mustang booster, a supporter of the AFS program, all while helping to instill family values in her sons.
Preceding Kay in death was her devoted husband Ted who passed in 2003. She leaves behind a large and loving family that includes her two sons and their families who continue to feel her presence and guidance; Mike Anderson and wife Sherry of Omaha, NE and Ken Anderson and friend Dyan Kelly of Chicago, IL; 8 grandchildren Jeff (Tarah), Jake (Steph), Josh (fiancée Taryn Heishman), Jennifer, Cassie and Zach Anderson and Michael and Tim Stanek; 4 great-grandchildren Madelyn, Colton, Luke and Abigail; 2 sisters Pat Braun and Janie Opich from northern California; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of good friends

Arnold, Edgar L., Colonel - Edgar passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at The Lighthouse in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 97 years.
There will not be any viewing or visitation.

Edgar L. Arnold, Colonel, US Army, Retired, son of Raymond and Eva (Bennett) Arnold was born in Cheyenne, WY on April 2, 1913 and died at his home in Omaha, NE on February 17, 2011.
In 1917 the family relocated to Iowa and remained in the Shenandoah area where Ed attended the Shenandoah schools. He was a member of the Shenandoah Class of 1932. His companion of some 45 years including 28 year of active military service was his wife, Alice Anderzhon, who died in 1978 at their home west of Shenandoah. He later married Dorothy M. Spomer of Omaha, NE.
Colonel Arnold followed a military career beginning as 1st Sgt. of Co. E of the 168th Inf. Regt., 34th Inf. Div. Iowa National Guard. On February 10, 1941 Company E from Shenandoah was inducted into Federal Service and the unit was ordered to Louisiana. Ed attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. on July 3, 1942 and assigned as a Company Commander in the 28th Inf. Div. that moved to England in 1943. He was transferred to the 2nd Ranger Bn. in March 1944 and participated as a Company Commander during the D-Day invasion of Europe on Omaha Beach where he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Ed remained with the 2nd Ranger Bn. as Executive Officer participating in five battle campaigns and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation as well as receiving two battlefield promotions and ending the war in Europe as a Major, US Army, Reserve.
After graduating from Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, he integrated into the Regular Army as a 1st Lt. Inf. in July 1946. Colonel Arnold has served in numerous positions and units throughout his military career in both Staff and Command assignments. His military duties have taken him to England; Germany; France; Trieste in Italy; Republic of China (Taiwan); South Korea; as well as several Posts, Camps, and Stations in the United States. His last duty assignment was at Deputy Inspector General, Fourth US Army, Ft. Sam Houston, TX where he was awarded the Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service to his country. He retired from active duty at Ft. Sam Houston in 1967.
In addition to aforementioned awards, Colonel Arnold was the recipient of several other awards and decorations including the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Most cherished of all to an infantryman, however, is the Combat Infantry Badge which Colonel Arnold wore with distinction.
In July 1973 Colonel Arnold was appointed to the office of Fremont County Judicial Magistrate. During his term in office he conducted Court proceedings in Sidney and Hamburg, IA. After serving the Judicial Magistrate System for almost 6 years he laid down his gavel in retirement in 1979.
Colonel Arnold was a life member of the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, the Retired Officers Association, and the American Legion. He served as Commander of the American Legion Post #88 in Shenandoah during 1973. He was also a member of the King of Kings Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife Alice, three brothers, three sisters, a granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Omaha; son L/C (Ret) Raymond L. Arnold and wife Rita of Williamsburg, VA; sister Leona Johnson of Red Oak, IA; brother Donald Arnold of Klamath Falls, OR; stepsons Dennis and Dwayne Spomer and wives Susan and Glenna of Omaha, NE; a stepdaughter Debbie Rabe and husband Richard of Grand Island, NE; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; numerous nieces & nephews

Barlow, Denzel LaVerne - Funeral services for Denzel Barlow, 87 of Clarinda, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert Keefer officiating. Interment will be at Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to services and following the service during lunch. Memorials are suggested to Westminster Presbyterian Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Denzel LaVerne Barlow, of Clarinda, entered into peace March 1, 2011 at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa.
Denzel was born May 6, 1923 at Westboro, MO to Allen E. Barlow and Hallie Bell (Beck) Barlow. Denzel was the youngest of six brothers and one sister. He attended school in Atchison County, MO and graduated from Braddyville High School, Braddyville, IA. After high school he farmed. He and his wife Beverly Barlow had four sons: Denzel Jr., Ronald Dean, Gary Lee and Kevin Dee.
He married Betty Montz in 1962 and moved to Grundy Center, IA and later to Waterloo, IA. He was employed by Combined Insurance Co. He sold insurance for Combined for 30 years and retired in 1991. He was top salesman for Combined in 1970 and won various awards earning company trips to Canada, London and Paris. He developed many long term friendships during his career with Combined and loved the art of sales. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Elks, and Clarinda Country Club.
After retirement he enjoyed spending his summer time at the farm working, mowing, improving the landscape and he kept a well-manicured yard. He enjoyed wintering in Phoenix for several years. There he enjoyed his friends, socializing, golfing and making chocolate candy for which he was well known. Lucky family members and friends enjoyed his chocolates as Christmas gifts. He enjoyed playing gin rummy and watching the Phoenix Suns basketball games.
Preceding Denny in death were his parents, five brothers, one sister, son, Ronald Dean, and wife Betty.
He is survived by his sons, Dennie Jr. and wife Sharon, Gary Lee and wife Kathy and Kevin Dee and wife Teresa, all of Clarinda, IA; step-daughter Diane Wicks and family of Mission, KS; grandchildren Lisa Carlson, Craig Barlow, Chad Barlow, Jeff Barlow, Kayla Hagey, Kinsey Barlow, Karlee Barlow, Ethan and Emma Barlow; step grandson Jason Riley and family of St. Joseph, MO; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Robert passed away Sunday evening at Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He is survived by his mother Charlote Behrmann of South Dakota; sons: Marhsall Behrmann and wife Carmen of York, Pennsylvania and Joshua Behrmann and wife Kari of Everett, Washington; cousin Jean Prazak of Menlo, Iowa; brothers Richard Behrman of North Carolina and David Behrman of South Dakota.

Robert Behrmann was born September 24th 1947. He is the oldest of three boys born to Byron and Charlote Behrmann. On May 27th 1977, Robert's first son Marshall Behrmann was born. His second son Joshua Behrmann was born January 8th 1982.
Robert lived with his two sons for many years in Shambaugh, Iowa. During this time he managed and owned his own business in Clarinda Iowa called Osborne Upholstery. Throughout these years he enjoyed his time with family and many friends.
Some of Bob's fondest memories included trips to Florida with his two sons. He also enjoyed Sunday drives to Maryville for bowling and eating. Although, most of his time was spent working at the upholstery shop, it was one his hidden pleasure in which he took great pride in making customers happy.
Bob was not much of a socialite. He was a man of few words and enjoyed his coffee and his red meat charred. He was always determined to do every job "right". His work was flawless much like his personal character.
Even though he had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis for 38 years he always tried his best to not let it affect his family and work. Bob passed away February 13, 2011 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his father Byron Behrman.

Blanchard, Charlene Elois Fox - Charlene Elois (Fox) Blanchard, daughter of Duane and Genevieve (Hopkins) Fox, was born, March 9, 1926 near Watson, Missouri and left this life on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Charlene graduated from the Clearmont High School in 1944. It was at Clearmont that she first met Dean Blanchard, her husband of 62 years. Charlene attended college at Tarkio for one semester and then worked as manager of the Brown's Shoe store in Shenandoah, Iowa until Dean returned from service.
They were married on June 15, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Shenandoah, IA and began farming near Clearmont. To this marriage five children were born: Gerald, Brenda, Alan, Brian and Lyle.
Charlene always had a love of horses and began riding her Grandfather's workhorses. She was delighted as a child when Grandpa bought her a spotted mare named Beauty. When Dean and Charlene's farming operation had grown, Charlene made sure that horses were included in the livestock raised on the farm.
Riding and going to horse shows was a fun family activity and Charlene raised many foals over the years. Charlene and Dean worked as partners on the farm in both the crop and livestock operation and rarely were apart. They were also active leaders in 4-H and the Nodaway County Extension Council.
Charlene loved to travel and planned trips to various part of the U. S. whenever she could get Dean off of the farm. Dean and Charlene shared a love of the Lord and were active in Baptist churches at Clearmont, Hopkins, and then Laura Street.
Charlene was preceded in death by her husband, Dean; sons Gerald and Brian; granddaughter, Correne Cox; and brother, Charles "Bud" Fox.

Clayton, Lorayne Phipps - Lorayne Clayton went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ Sunday, Feb. 20 2011 at a care center in Boise, ID. She was born on June 17, 1919 to Thomas and Blanche (Posten) Phipps, in Shambaugh, Iowa. She had two older brothers, and three younger sisters. Lorayne’s school years were spent in Shambaugh, College Springs, and Clarinda, IA, graduating from high school in Pillager, Minnesota in 1936. Her love for learning took her to junior college for two years in Clarinda, IA, and her last two years at Simpson College where she graduated in 1942. Her teaching career began in Boxholm, Iowa in the fall of 1942.
She married Gaylan Clayton in 1946 and they had a son, Philip, and a daughter, Rebecca. The family lived in Iowa, So California, Brookings, Oregon, and Happy Camp, California. She moved to Antioch, California in 1956 after her divorce. There she raised her children and taught senior and junior high students until she retired in 1988. Lorayne was involved in family, church, school and community activities her whole life. She moved to Boise in 2002 to be near her daughter and family.
Lorayne loved learning and traveling and was so fortunate to travel to six of the seven continents from the mid 70’s to the late 90’s. She had wonderful memories, pictures, and artifacts from the many places she’d been.
She is preceded in death by parents and son, Phillip.
Lorayne is survived by two sisters, Dorothy Grace Johnson and Phyllis Cronin and their families; her daughter, Rebecca Best and her husband Michael Best; and two grandsons, Spencer Powell and Phillip Clayton.
A viewing was held Thursday, February24, 2011, at Alden-Waggoner Funeral Chapel, Boise, Idaho and private graveside services were held Monday, February 28, 2011 at Butler Cemetery, Shambaugh, Iowa.

Erickson, Gladys Marie Hultquist - Memorial services for Gladys M. Erickson, 94, of Stanton, Iowa, will be held at a later date.
Gladys Marie Erickson, the daughter of Otto Daniel and Rosa E. (Lawson) Hultquist, was born March 5, 1917 in Page County, Iowa. She died on Monday, March 7, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society of Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 94 years and 2 days.
Gladys was raised in Page County and attended county school at the Kramer School. She worked as a housekeeper and in retail sales at Woolworths store in Red Oak. She was united in marriage to Wesley a. Erickson on February 14, 1944 at Stanton, Iowa. They made their home on a farm southeast of Stanton. Gladys then worked at Spurgeons Store, as a cook for 20 years at Three Crowns Café in Stanton and then the next 209 years with Stanton Care Center as a cook. She was an excellent pie baker. Gladys enjoyed sewing and working with the ladies in WELCA, along with being a 4-H leader. She was a member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church and many neighborhood clubs.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Arthur Hultquist and sister: Clara Burke.
Gladys is survived by her husband, Wesley A. Erickson of Stanton, Iowa; daughter, Bonnie Hanson and husband Robert of Maplewood, MN; granddaughter, Lia Sacco and husband Giuseppe of Boca Raton, FL; two great-grandchildren: Antonio and Matteo; other relatives and friends.

Fastenau, Bernard R. - Bernard R. Fastenau, 68, Chillicothe, Mo., passed away on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. A family visitation was held one hour prior to the service.

Fominyen, Fon Takara - Fon Takara Fominyen was born Jan 17, 1979 in Clarinda, Iowa the son of Martin & Margaret Fominyen. He passed away March 11, 2011 from a kayak accident outside of Shenandoah, Iowa.
Fon was a 1997 graduate of Clarinda High School and he briefly attended Iowa Western Community College. He often attended worship services at his local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He worked very studiously at Eaton Corp for a decade.
Fon had a passion for muscle cars and everyone knows how much he loved his new Chevy Camaro. He had many interests that reflected his desire to live life to the fullest including target shooting, video games, anything electronics related and his newfound interests in motorcycles and kayaking.
Fon loved to the fullest and this is reflected by the pride in his heart for his son and daughter, Jordan and Jenna.
Fon was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Fominyen, and all four grandparents the Fominyens and Peforks.
Fon is survived by his children Jordan and Jennieve McLaughlin of Tabor, IA; his father Martin Fominyen of Clarinda, IA; his brother Everett Fominyen of Omaha, NE; his sisters Alma Ncho, New Jersey; Ninah Fominyen, Lega Fominyen and Muyang Boni Fominyen all of Iowa City, IA; specials friends Susan Carlson and Alison McLaughlin; nephews, nieces, cousins and friends

Hendrickson, Ronald Lee - Ronald Lee Hendrickson was born Sept 11, 1941 rural Essex, IA to Charles Raymond Claus Hendrickson and Dorothy Marie (Hughes) Hendrickson. He graduated Essex High School.
Ron worked at the nurseries before graduating and following that he was a driver for Johnson Elevator in Essex. He began working at Wilson Foods in Clarinda retiring from there in 1991 after working there 23 years. After retiring from Wilsons he drove the Miller Taxi in Clarinda to fill his retirement days. He enjoyed the people and always had a wonderful conversation with those he met.
Ron served his country in the United States Army during the 1960's. Just before being discharged in 1969 he was married to Lola Mae Smith on Feb 14, 1969 at First Covenant Church in Essex by Rev. John Carlson. This year on Valentine's Day they would have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary.
Ron passed away Feb 11, 2011 at Veterans Administration Hospital, Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Lyle Smith, and niece, Kim Erickson Leftwich.
He is survived by his wife, Lola of Clarinda; children, Lee Hendrickson and David Hendrickson, both of Clarinda, and Lisa Allumbaugh and husband Greg of Clarinda and their two sons, Lane and Gabe; siblings Charles Hendrickson and wife Sharon of Essex, Karen Erickson and husband Byron of Shenandoah, Mary Whitehill and husband Danny of Farragut, Jimmy Hendrickson and wife Sharon of Shenandoah, Connie Sollars and husband Kim of Coin, Arlene Woods and husband Lanny of Tulsa, OK, DeLayne Hendrickson of Shenandoah; in-laws Carl Smith and wife Rosie of Shenandoah, Neil Smith and wife Trish of Goodyear, AZ, Wade Smith and wife Teri of Atlantic, IA, and Ida Oles and husband Jeff of Hamlin, IA; uncle Earl Hendrickson and wife Betty of Essex, aunts Pauline Miller of Farragut and Betty Burkes of Arizona; and mother-in-law Luella Smith of Atlantic, Iowa.

Keith, Delmar Raymond - Delmar Raymond Keith was born June 30, 1939 in Adams County, Iowa near Quincy, the son of Cecil Raymond and Helen Virginia (Moore) Keith. He passed away on Sunday morning, February 13, 2011 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 71 years, 7 months and 14 days.
Delmar grew up in rural Adams and Montgomery Counties and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1958. On June 15, 1962, he was united in marriage to Betty Jean Nupp in Shenandoah. Delmar worked as a production manager at Imperial Chemical in Shenandoah for over 40 years. He attended the Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, camping and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Betty Jean.
Survivors include his children, Raymond Keith and his wife Della of Shenandoah, Iowa, Mike (Davis) Keith and Christina Herr of Essex, Iowa; grandchildren, Joshua Thompson, Nate Hoyt, Tyler Hoyt, Paige Wigley, Destiny Archer, Vanessa Archer; a brother, Bob Keith and his wife Vicki; a sister, Vicki Mosier and her husband Roy; along with many other relatives and friends

Kenagy, Karl Wesley - Karl Wesley Kenagy was born August 19, 1939 in Page County, Iowa, the son of Arthur B. and Ethelen (Knowles) Kenagy. He passed away at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday evening, December 28, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 9 days. Covenanter Cemetery near Clarinda, Iowa.
Karl grew up in Page County and attended College Springs schools. He graduated from Amity High School in 1958. Following high school, Karl was united in marriage to Terri Lynn Wilson. This union was blessed with three children; Duane, Eleia and Kevin.
Karl attended Maryville State Teachers College for one year then went to work for Greenwod and Orth Motors in Clarinda. Karl and Terri moved to Des Moines where Karl worked for Sumner-Ramsey Pontiac from 1964 until 1977 when they returned to College Springs to help with the family farm. He opened his own auto repair shop and operated it until his health would not allow him to. He served on the South Page School Board and the Amity Hall Board. He was a member of the College Springs Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee and most recently as an Elder. He enjoyed drag racing, farming, cattle, especially the bottle and bucket calves with his grandchildren; and he enjoyed helping with various 4-H projects. Karl also made scrapbooks for all of the members in his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Terri; a sister, Evelyn Lortz; and a brother-in-law, Robbie Wilson.

Luther, Katherene Marguerite Shoemaker - Katherene Marguerite Luther was born October 27, 1924 in Knoten, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Henry and Marguerite Morene (Parr) Shoemaker. Katherene grew up in Southwest Iowa and graduated from New Market High School in 1941. On August 21, 1945 she was united in marriage to Carroll Luther in Troy, Kansas. This union was blessed with two children, Sue and Donald.
Katherene worked as the office manager for the Appleman Manufacturing Company in Nebraska City, Nebraska for 17 years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Shenandoah and was an active member of C.W.F. She was also a member of the Mary-Martha Circle, the Bricker Senior Citizen Center and the G.T.G. Club in Clarinda.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carroll; and a brother, Charles Shoemaker.

Marsh, Naomi Darlene Lunsford - Naomi Darlene Marsh was born December 3, 1934 near Oregon, Missouri at the rural home of her parents Lester Warren and Leda Inez (Muir) Lunsford. The Lord called her home on Sunday evening, January 23, 2011 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 76 years, 1 month and 20 days. Memory Cemetery
Known all her life as Darlene, she grew up in the Holt County, Missouri area and graduated valedictorian of the New Point High School class of 1952. She attended one year of college at Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Missouri. On June 18, 1953 she was united in marriage to Lyle Keith Marsh in New Point, Missouri. This union was blessed with four children, James Franklin, Timothy Warren, Mary Evelyn, and Ronald Paul.
After their divorce in 1966, Darlene raised her children in Elmo, Missouri. Darlene was first and foremost a homemaker, but to support her family she babysat other children, cleaned houses, assisted the elderly, and worked various other jobs. The family attended the Elmo Christian Church where Darlene taught Sunday school, Bible studies, VBS, and youth groups. Three weeks out of every summer she also served as a cook at Flaming Spirit Christian Camp near New Point, Missouri.
In 1979 Darlene moved to Missouri Valley, Iowa where she worked at Longview Nursing Home in the housekeeping and dietary departments for 14 years. In 1993 she moved to Clarinda, Iowa where she became a cook at the Bethseda Care Center. She later worked in the dietary department at the Clarinda Hospital until her retirement. She then made her home at Clarhaven apartments where she enjoyed cross stitching, embroidering, crocheting, reading, and puzzles.
Faith, family, and friends were most important in Darlene’s life. She was a member of the Missouri Valley Christian Church and diligently attended the Fairview Church of Christ in Clarinda. She always enjoyed seeing her family and loved reunions. Through the years, she attended many weddings & graduations and crocheted a blanket for each new baby. She kept in touch with friends by sending cards & letters, and when possible, she would travel to the New Point Alumni Banquet each year.
She was preceded in death by her parents. Reimer, Mary Lou Marshall- Mary Lou Marshall was born April 18, 1935 in Allendale, Missouri, the daughter of Vern and Arlene (Gibson) Marshall. She passed away on Monday afternoon, January 3, 2011 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 15 days. Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah, Iowa.
Mary Lou grew up in the Shenandoah area and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1954. After high school she attended secretary school in Omaha for a year. She was later married to August Riemer. This union was blessed with four children, Donna, Roger, Dennis and Brian.
Mary was a homemaker who raised her four children. She worked several part time jobs with the last being a baker for the Waveland Fairground Café. She loved to read, cook and bake. She also liked to watch Roseanne and wrestling on TV. Mary really enjoyed her visits to Prairie Meadows Casino. But most of all, Mary enjoyed being with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and Herbert Marshall; two sisters, Betty Williams and Marie Mather; a nephew, Tommy Mather; and a granddaughter, Brandy Marie Brown.

McCalla, David Sloan - Memorial service for David McCalla, age 69, of Clarinda will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at Reformed Presbyterian (Covenanter) Church in Rural Clarinda with burial in the Covenanter Cemetery. Family visitation will be Thursday Evening from 6-8 p.m. at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Diabetes or Donor’s Choice.
David Sloan McCalla was born June 10, 1941 at Clarinda Hospital to Wilson McCalla and Hazel (Sommers) McCalla.
David spent his childhood growing up on the farm south of Clarinda. He attended Lee Grove County School then Olive Branch County School until the 8th grade. He then attended Clarinda High School and graduated in 1959. After high school, he attended Clarinda Community college for one year. David served his country in the Iowa National Guard.
On December 17, 1966 David was united in marriage to Sharon Bowers at the United Methodist Church in Bedford, IA. They had two children, Lori and Eric. David and Sharon were divorced in 1990. David spent his adult life on the farm with his father. They had a heard of milking shorthorn cattle along with a small hog operation. Besides farming David also had a wide variety of side jobs. David enjoyed reading and was always active socially attending CO-OP dinners, church, and Sunday dinners.
Following the death of his father David stayed on the farm for several years until he sold out and moved to Shambaugh, IA where he resided until August 2010 when he went to live at Westridge Nursing Home. He was there until his death on March 22, 2011.
Preceding David in death were his parents, infant brother Samuel McCalla, and brother-in-law Ed Searcy.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Eric McCalla of Shambaugh, IA; daughter Lori Click and husband Steve of Columbus, OH; sister Marianne Searcy of Colorado Springs, CO; cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Memorial service was held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at Reformed Presbyterian (Covenanter) Church, with burial at the Covenanter Cemetery in rural Clarinda. Pastor Mitch Grossoehm officiated. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association or Donor’s choice.

Pierson, Marvel Faith - Marvel Faith Pierson, 73, was born at home to Floyd and Florence Pierson on February 3, 1938, and passed away at her home in Calimesa, Calif., on January 6, 2011.
She grew up in Shambaugh, Iowa, attending grade school there and graduated from Clarinda High School. She went to California, married and worked for a few years. She returned to Clarinda to attend LPN school at Iowa Western Community College. Following graduation she worked at the Clarinda MHI, then moved to Kansas City, Mo., to work at the Truman Hospital in Independence, Mo.
Marvel moved back to California where she received her RN degree, being on the Dean's List. She worked at the Pamona Valley Hospital for 15 years until a shoulder injury prevented her from continuing.
Marvel was a very talented person; she sang in churches, school choir and at her RN graduation. She loved performing in plays, and giving readings. She had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh, including her family. She didn't know a stranger.
She dedicated her life to the Lord and did a lot of work in the Nazarene Church she attended. She did a lot of volunteer work, helping needy people and serving food. She was a very generous person, and a very special aunt and sister.
She is survived by a daughter that she raised, Valerie Cummings and husband Robert of California, two grandsons, a granddaughter, a great-grandson; sister Grace Johnson Forbes of Clarinda, sister-in-law Gerry Pierson of California; seven nephews, two nieces, many great-nieces and nephews, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Gladys Gentry, and Mildred Knizley, brothers Cleo, Leo, and Wayne Pierson and nice Marcie Straley.
Marvel was loved by her family, spoiling her as she was the youngest. She will be missed by all of us. Love you sis. Funeral arrangements were made in California

Runyan, Edna May McDonald - Edna May (McDonald) Runyan was born on February 8, 1919 in Rural College Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Bert and Anna Elizabeth (Smiley) McDonald. Edna entered into eternal rest on Wednesday evening, March 9, 2011 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Edna’s early years were spent in the College Springs area where she attended school. She graduated from high school with the Class of 1936. On June 12, 1941 she was united in marriage to Winston Runyan in rural Coin, Iowa. The couple later lived in Kansas City, KS and Maryville, MO before settling down on their farm in Coin, IA.
Before she was married Edna worked for Henry Fields Nursery. After her marriage to Winston she became a loyal and dedicated wife and mother. She worked along side her husband on the farm, doing whatever tasks were needed to be done. She enjoyed cooking, doing needlework and reading. She was a longtime member of the Coin United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Winston; a sister Maribel Colter; and brother Harold McDonald.

Sickman, Helen Miriam Carlson - Helen Miriam Sickman was born September 25, 1924 near Bethesda, Iowa, the daughter of Anton E. and Laura F. (Peterson) Carlson. She passed away on Friday morning, January 14, 2011 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 20 days. St John's Lutheran Cem near Westboro.
Helen grew up near Bethesda and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1942. She then attended Teachers College for one year. On October 17, 1954, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Sickman at Bethesda. Iowa. This union was blessed with two children, Miriam and Gery.
Helen worked as a teacher and then as a cashier at Montgomery Wards. She sold Avon for over 38 years. Most recently she was the officer in charge at the Northboro Post Office. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church at Westboro, Missouri and was active in the LCW group. She loved to bake cookies and work with her flower boxes. She always looked forward to selling her Avon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Marie Malmberg and Katherine Yeske.

Sievers, Penny Johnson - Penny (Johnson) Sievers, 53, of Newell, Iowa and formerly of the Shenandoah/Essex area passed away on Sunday,February 20, 2011 at her home in Newell following a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Graveside inurnment services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26th at 4:30 p.m. at the Essex Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to the "I Will Not Worry Foundation" or a charity of your choice. A Celebration of Life gathering for Penny will be held at the Shenandoah Elks Club on Hwy 59 immediately following the graveside service at Essex on Saturday.
Penny was born March 21, 1957 in Sandwich, Illinois, the daughter of Terry and Marcene Johnson. She grew up on a farm north of Shenandoah, where she attended the Shenandoah Community Schools.
She graduated with the Class of 1975. Following high school graduation, Penny recieved her associates degree from Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs.
Penny enjoyed cooking, flower arranging and most of all chachinging. She was happiest being with people and helping others. Penny started the "I Will Not Worry Foundation" to express a loving concern to others affected by cancer.
In 2009, Penny was honored to be the recipient of the June E. Nylen Star award. Penny shared her smile with others as a volunteer at the hospital. She enjoyed the friendships she made with her Bosom Body Buddies and also enjoyed the trips she took with her "gray hairs".
Penny's most recent employment was at Buena Vista Clinic where she was a medical assistant. Penny enjoyed the friendships she made through her employment.

Herbert Dow Tally was born October 20, 1928, near Clinton, Missouri the son of William Dow Tally and Mary Jane (Hamilton) Tally. He was the youngest of twelve children. Herbert was a 1947 graduate of Clarinda High School. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953. Herbert and Ruth Elaine Mollenkopf were united in marriage on April 22, 1956 at Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with five children, Denise, Brian, Keith, Norman, and Kevin.
Herbert believed Jesus’ words of “you must be born again”. In January of 1956, he made Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior.
Herbert and Ruth farmed and raised their children in East River Township, Page County. Farming was a way of life for Herbert and he enjoyed the farm. Through the years, he has been a member of Farm Bureau, was a director of the Clarinda Co-op and a 4-H leader. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Clarinda and served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and was a member of Gideons International. Herbert’s family was very important to him and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren.
Preceding Herbert in death were his parents; brothers, Connor, Paul, Melvin and Elbert Tally; sisters, Lola Kerns, Dora Combs, Beulah Slaight, Frances Williams, Marjorie Little and Zula Ferguson.

Thomason, Dewey DeRoy - Dewey DeRoy Thomason was born on September 18, 1924, in Nyssa, Oregon, the son of Charles Noah and Anona Bertha Otelia (Garmen) Thomason. Dewey entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, March 9, 2011 at Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Dewey was raised on the family ranch in Nyssa. He was an active member of the local 3-H Club, before it was known as 4-H. The family moved to Vallejo, California where he graduated from Vallejo Evening High School with the Class of 1943, proudly wearing the uniform of the United States Army, as he had already enlisted to serve his country during WWII. During his service career he was stationed at Presidio of San Francisco and Guadalcanal Island during the Asiatic Pacific Campaign.
On April 21, 1946, which happened to be Easter Sunday, Dewey was united in marriage to Sophia-Louisia “Sandie” Merkel in Bismarck, ND at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with 52 years of marriage.
During his career Dewey was the owner of the Log Cabin Bar in Medora, ND, drove a truck for McKee Trucking and was accident and citation free for 8 years. Dewey worked as a field underwriter for New York Life Insurance in Bismarck until his retirement in 1998 after 36 years with the company.
He was a 50 year member of the Lions Club International, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40 et 8, and German from Russia Heritage Society. Dewey had a passion for traveling. Some of his adventures took him to Russia, Australia, Alaska, Europe (several times) and all over the United States. He attended the Guadalcanal Veterans annual convention for the last 10 years. He enjoyed jazz and ragtime music (of which he had an extensive collection of music), attending festivals in Iowa, Missouri, Colorado and California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Sophia-Louisia “Sandie”; and sister Mary Lou Buss Freitas.

Watkins, Robert "Bob" Jun 10, 1924 - Mar 5, 2011
Robert Earle “Bob” Watkins was born on June 10, 1924 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Charles Salem Watkins and Laura Ollie (Lineberry) Watkins. He entered into eternal rest on March 5, 2011 in Clarinda, Iowa at 86 years of age.
Bob grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. During his youth Bob was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the level of Eagle Scout. He loved to read books from the library and was diligent with his after-school paper route. In High School he developed an interest in art and drawing. Bob attended the University of Iowa studying art and engineering. While attending the University Bob met fellow art student and future wife, Ruth Shambaugh. Bob’s college education was interrupted by the onset of World War II. He joined the United States Army and served his country from 1943-1946 as a Sergeant with the 1397th Engineer Construction Battalion. He was stationed in Okinawa and Saipan. After his tour of duty Bob returned to Iowa to marry his college sweetheart. Bob and Phyllis Ruth Shambaugh were united in marriage on June 2, 1946 in Clarinda, Iowa.
Bob and Ruth moved to the Los Angeles area were Bob attended Chouinard Art Institute. He began his career as a commercial artist at Carson-Roberts Advertising Agency in Los Angeles. Their first two children, Wendy and Jennifer Wren were born in Pasadena, California. In 1952 Bob and Ruth moved to the East Coast, settling in Greenwich, Connecticut. Bob worked as an artist/illustrator at Charles E. Cooper, Inc. in New York City, New York. While living there two more children were born, Heidi Lark and Nancy Piper. In 1958 Bob and Ruth and their growing family moved to Northern California. Bob continued his career in advertising as creative director for BBD&O in San Francisco. Their last three children, Robert Jared “Jed”, Sean Heather Field and Seth Jonathan Lynn were born in San Mateo, California. In 1970, Bob, Ruth and their children moved to Clarinda, Iowa. Bob worked as an art director for Fletcher, Mayo and Associates in St. Joseph, Missouri until his retirement in 1987. For several years after formally retiring Bob continued to utilize his advertising talents doing freelance work for Carmichael-Lynch and several other agricultural related companies including American Angus Association.
Over the years Bob created an extensive collection of artwork featuring landscapes and portraits of the places he had been and the people he had known. Bob’s paintings have been on exhibit in galleries in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many of his paintings hang in the homes of family and friends throughout the United States.
During his career as an art director, Bob won numerous AAF (American Advertising Federation) and NAMA (National Agri-Marketing Association) awards for advertising campaigns created for his clients.
Bob made a life long quest of deepening his understanding of the words of the bible and strengthening his faith. Bob was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clarinda, Iowa. Along with his family, his faith and his work, another aspect of his life that was extremely important to Bob was being a responsible steward of the land.
Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Charles Lynn Watkins and wife Martha, brother John Edmund Watkins and wife Dorothy, brother-in-law William H. Shambaugh & wife Ella, and niece Diane Watkins Well.
Bob is survived by his wife, Ruth Shambaugh Watkins; children: Wendy R. Watkins, Jennifer W. Watkins, Heidi L. Hess and husband Don, Piper Watkins Hobbs and husband David, Jed Watkins and wife Christine, Heather Watkins Zenk and husband James, Seth Watkins and wife Christy; grandchildren: Jordana Zukerman and husband Itai, Samantha Weiland, Kaitlin Hess, Kristen Hess, Amy Lovett, Scott Lovett, Hannah Watkins, Molly Watkins, James Watkins, Heidi Grace Watkins, Mackenzie Zenk, Shane Zenk, Spencer Watkins, Tatum Watkins and great-grandchild: Avi Zukerman.
A memorial art exhibit to honor Bob’s life will be held at a later date.

Westenburg, Howard Rudolph - Howard Rudolph Westenburg was born September 22, 1922 near Hepburn, Iowa, the son of Rudolph Cornelius and Signe Marie (Pearson) Westenburg. He passed away on Monday evening, December 27, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 5 days. Elmwood Cemetery, Coin, Iowa.
Howard grew up in rural Page County and graduated from the Coin Consolidated High School in 1941. Following high school he served his country in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. He worked as a carpenter with Elton King and farmed with Darrell Murphy until he retired in 1983. On September 27, 1986 Howard was united in marriage to Mildred Penny in Blanchard, Iowa. Howard enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening and repairing things. He had been a member of the Blanchard American Legion Post.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mildred; and a sister, Marvel Larson.
Survivors include his brother, Leslie Westenburg and his wife Bernita of Richardson, Texas; a sister, Darlene Dodway of Clinton, Iowa; five step children; thirteen step grandchildren; nineteen step great grandchildren; along with numerous other relatives and friends

Weston, Donna G. Hensel - Funeral services for Donna G. Weston, 78, of Grant, Iowa were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6th at the Grant United Methodist Church with interment in the Grant Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Donna's name.
Donna Glee Weston was born on January 29, 1933, the daughter of Charles Robert Hensel and Dorothy Mae Starlin Hensel. She was born at home in the rural Grant area. She attended the Science Vale Country School and finished 8th grade at Grant. She completed her high school education in Villisca graduating in the class of 1950. She was united in marriage to Teddy J. Weston on September 9, 1951. Six children were born to this union: Robert Dean, Roxanna Rae, Rebecca June, Teresa Lynn, George Rodney and Cynthia May. They lived near Grant all their married life.
Donna enjoyed being a housewife and mother for her family. While her children were growing up she upholstered furniture. She sewed for Bordeaux in Clarinda and worked at Delong’s Sportswear, retiring at 65.
After retirement, she worked with the Grant Community Preservationist Group to restore the Masonic Lodge. She served as their president for several years.
She enjoyed working in her yard with her flowers. She enjoyed bird watching. She was hooked on quilting after she made her first quilt for a fund raiser. She and Teddy attended the Country Music Jams where she would sing and he would play the guitar.
Donna is survived by her husband of 59 years Teddy Weston of Grant; her children: Robert (Georgia) Weston of Edgewood, New Mexico; Roxanna (Gail) Peterson of Creston; Rebecca (David) Westover of Grant; Teresa Knudson of Omaha, Nebraska; George (Laura) Weston of Elliott; and Cynthia (Wallace) Harvey of Topeka, Kansas; grandchildren: Robert Weston, Wennifer Duskus, Juliette Weston, Jeremie Peterson, Jodie Heinemann, Jesse Westover, Jude Westover, Callie Westover, Nathan Knudson, Colby Weston, Jebediah Weston, Madeleine Weston, Gwendolyn Weston, Jennifer Eblen, Tiffany Murchison, and Jessica Cooper; 25 great grandchildren; brother Robert (Doris Jean) Hensel of Atlantic; sister Jacky (Bob) Samuelson of Clarinda; sister-in-law Peggy Weston of Grant; and brother-in-law Lawrence Foote of Red Oak and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mona Delfs.

Weston, Mary Josephine Fletcher - Mary Josephine Weston was born November 8, 1915 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph A. and Elizabeth H. (Mascher) Fletcher. She passed away on Friday evening, December 31, 2010 at the Fair Oaks Residential Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 23 days. Rose Hill Cemetery, Shenandoah.
Mary grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1933. After high school, she was united in marriage to Carroll Millard Weston on July 14, 1934. This union was blessed with two sons, Donavon and Michael.
Mary worked for Dr. Teachout and Dr. Connell at the veterinarian’s office. She loved small animals and enjoyed interacting with the all the people that came in and out of the office. She was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah and participated in the various ladies groups.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Donald Fletcher.
Survivors include her children, Donavon Weston and his wife Kathleen of East Moline, Illinois, Michael Weston and his wife Helen of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania; two grandsons, Kevin Weston and his wife Donna of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania, David Weston of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Jillian Weston of Lake Ariel, Pennsylvania; along with many other relatives and friends
