001Martha Karen Wilmes, 69, died Monday, May 13, 2013, at her home in Maryville, Missouri.

Martha was born August 11, 1943, in Maryville, Missouri to Harvey and Margaret (Eiberger) Peterson who preceded her in death.

A 1961 graduate of Stanberry R-II High School, Martha was an office manager for United Country Reality, St. Joseph, Missouri.

She married Richard Lee Wilmes on February 7, 1975, in Conception Junction, Missouri.

Martha was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic Church and St. Gregory Guild.

Preceding Martha in death were her parents and sister Carolyn Freeman.

Survivors include her husband Richard Lee Wilmes of their home, Maryville, daughters Cindy (Tim) Lance, Barnard, MO, Kim (Curt) Morrison, Flower Mound, TX, Stephanie (Doug) Spire, Papillion, NE, Kelli Boisen, Clive, IA, son Rick ( fiance Sumer) Wilmes, Stanberry, MO, brothers Wayne (Debbie) Peterson, John (Joanie) Peterson, Don (Pam) Peterson all of Stanberry, Mo, sisters Marilyn (Rich) Reed, Kearney, MO, Elaine Minton, Parkville, MO, Cathy (Dennis Davis) Peterson, King City, MO, niece Jennifer "Jenny" Guerrero, Louisberg, KS who was raised in their home, fourteen grandchildren and one great granddaughter.

The Parish Prayer Service will be held at 5:00 PM Thursday, May 16, 2013 at St. Gregory's Catholic Church prior to the visitation that is to be held from 5:30-8:00 PM.

002Verlin Dean Vulgamott, 89, Maryville, Missouri, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, at his home in rural Maryville, Missouri.

Verlin was born December 15, 1923, in Graham, Missouri to Virgil and Vesta Rogers Vulgamott.

A 1941 graduate of Maryville High School, Verlin was a farmer.

He married Dorothy Porter Vulgamott on February 28, 1946, in Maryville, Missouri.

Verlin was a member of the Laura Street Baptist Church, Maryville, Missouri.

Preceding Verlin in death were his parents, brother Carrol Vulgamott, and nephew James Carroll Vulgamott.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Evelyn Vulgamott of their home, sons Russell (Janice) Vulgamott, White House, TX, Richard (Anita) Vulgamott, Spirit Lake, IA, Roger (Susan) Vulgamott, Topeka, KS, and daughter Kay (Surinder) Sahai, Cypress, Texas, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.

There is no formal visitation but friends may call anytime at the funeral home.

Terry Florence Major, 78, Burlington Junction, Missouri, died on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at her home.

She was born April 27, 1935 in Atchison County, Missouri the daughter of the late Terry and Veda (Helums) Robinson.

Florence was a 1953 graduate of Burlington Junction High School and lived her entire life in Iowa and Missouri. She was a homemaker and retired LPN having worked at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri.

On September 23, 1953 she was united in marriage to Donald G. Major at Rockport, Missouri, who survives her of the home. Florence is also survived by son Terry Don (Deborah) Major, Texarkana, Arkansas, daughter Sandra (Lee) Rohlmeier, Burlington Junction, son Randy (Traci) Major, Savannah, Missouri, one sister, nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held May 14, 2013 at the Price Funeral Home in Maryville, where friends may call after 1 PM on Monday. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Clearmont, Missouri

Helen M. Duff, 91, Maryville, Missouri, died Friday, May 03, 2013, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home, Savannah, Missouri.

Helen was born June 24, 1921, in Fillmore, Missouri to Charles Raymond and Mary Esther (Garrett) Wright.

A 1940 graduate of College High School, Maryville. Helen was a homemaker.

She married Robert "Dean" Duff on April 6, 1941, in Maryville, Missouri.

Helen was a member of the First Christian Church, James Edward Gray American Legion Auxilliary, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Sheltered Workshop Board, all of Maryville.

Preceding in death were her parents, husband Dean Duff (July 2, 1994), daughter Dorothy Belle Bryce, grandson Andrew Rohlfs, and brothers Roy and Charles Wright.

Survivors include daughters Mary Frances (Leon) Brinson, Savannah, MO, Carole Anne (Fred) Rohlfs, Jackson, MS, sons Robert Clinton Duff, Savannah, MO, George Raymond (Sarah) Duff, Maryville, MO, sister Hazel Thomas, Overland Park, KS, brothers Lloyd Wright, Smithville, MO, Robert Garrett, Barnard, MO, 15 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren, the special extended family of Mary Noel, and numerous foster children over the years.

A Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, May 06, 2013, at First Christian Church, Maryville, Missouri with private burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, at a later date

Virginia Nell (Hough) Phipps, 91, Maryville, Missouri, died May 03, 2013 at Maryville, Missouri.

Virginia was born August 14, 1921, in Des Moines, Iowa to Harold Byron and Coy Smith Hough.

A graduate of North High School on June 7, 1939, she was active in track and field events and was an accomplished high jumper. On December 29, 1941, she eloped and married Robert Darwin Phipps, in Princeton, Mo while he was on leave from the USMC.

Virginia proudly served in the WAVES from October 1944 to December 1945. She was honorably discharged and received the American Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon for her service. Mrs. Phipps was stationed at USNTS, Brooklyn, NY (Hunter's College), NTT (YW), Cedar Falls, IA and USNB, Wahsington, D.C. She was a member of the Navy Choir and performed at the opening of the United Nations.

Mrs. Phipps was proud to be a Charter Member of the Women's Memorial in Arlington Cemetery. In 2012 she visited the Memorial.

Virginia was a member of the Business Professional Women Auxiliary in Maryville, MO and was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Auxiliary) and participated in the annual wreath laying for many years.

Virginia enjoyed participating in the Arts and Crafts at the Nodaway County Fair where she earned recognition for her flower arranging, an interest that started at an early age.

She was recognized by the State of MO for her lifelong dedication and care of her daughter Janel Phipps during her extended battle with MS.

One of the highlights of her life was a trip to the British Isles with her daughter, Janel in 1979. While there is no evidence that she "kissed the Blarney Stone" she reminisced many times about her wonderful memories of that special time.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Robert Phipps (March 4, 2000), her daughter Janel Phipps (July 8, 2010) and sister Lorna Gaul.

Virginia is survived by her son Craig D. Phipps and his wife Linda of McLoud, OK, her granddaughter, Kelsey Phipps of Washington, D.C., one sister, Sara Ruths of Boise, ID and a niece, Sue Lewis and nephew, Steven Gaul of Kennewick, WA, and numerous grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to a public viewing on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Price Funeral Home located at 120 East First Street, Maryville, MO between 2 and 4 PM. Services will be held at 12:30 PM on Monday, May 6, 2013. There will be a private family inurnment in Des Moines, IA at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery



006Donald Francis Henggeler, 54, Maryville, Missouri, died April 27, at his home in Maryville.

Donald was born September 19, 1958, in Maryville to Vincent William and Anna Agatha McQuinn Henggeler.

A 1977 graduate of Jefferson C-123 High School, Conception Jct., Missouri, he was a Forge Technician at Federal Mogul Corporation, Maryville.

He married Marilyn Sue Ginther August 16, 1986, in Stanberry, Missouri.

Donald was a member of the St. Gregory Catholic Church, Maryville, Knights of Columbus, Stanberry and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and his family.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Henggeler.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn Henggeler; children: Sarah and Matthew Henggeler, all of the home in Maryville; four brothers: Raymond (Geneva) Henggeler, Ravenwood, Missouri, James (Cathy) Henggeler, Guilford, Missouri, Michael (Anita) Henggeler, Ravenwood, Missouri and Martin (Kim) Henggeler, Barnard, Missouri; sister, Teresa (Greg) Stuart, Stanberry, Missouri; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A public and family rosary will be held 3:00 pm, Tuesday, April 30 at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, also at the church. A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm following the visitation.

Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 am, Wednesday, May 1, at St. Gregory Barbarigo Catholic Church, with burial at St. Mary's Cemetery, Maryville

Kathleen May Collins 86, Hopkins, MO, passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013, at her Daughter’s home near Conception Junction, MO, with her family at her side.

Kathleen was born on May 6, 1927, near Alberta, Canada. She resided many years in Monticello, MN, and then moved to a farm NW of Hopkins, MO in 1966.

Her parents were Marion E. and Daisy (Powelson) Robinson. She graduated Salutatorian from the Monticello High School, Monticello, MN, and then received her Teaching Degree from St. Cloud State College, St. Cloud, MN. She taught in a rural school district in the Monticello, MN area. She later attended NWMSU in Maryville, MO.

Besides teaching, she had worked at the Nodaway Nursing Home, Maryville, MO, and the Maryville Public Library. She also worked and did genealogy at the Nodaway County Historical Society, Maryville. She also helped her husband Richard with the farm operation.

On December 27, 1950, in Monticello, MN, Kathleen was united in marriage to Richard G. Collins. After 61 years of marriage he passed away on January 6, 2011. She was also preceded by her parents; her son in law, Marvin Miller, and a niece, Mary Jane Robinson.

She was a member and attended the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, and the Prairie Star Community Club, both of Hopkins, MO, and was a 4-H Leader in North Nodaway 4-H Club. She had taught Sunday school in Minnesota and Hopkins.

She enjoyed her family and friends; gardening, quilting, knitting, crocheting, reading, and writing cards and letters.

Left to mourn her passing are her children, James (Carolyn) Collins, Bedford, IA, Carmen Larabee, Maryville, MO, Georgia Miller, Lenox, IA, Joan (Martin) Hemenway, Rogers, AR, and Carol (Allen) Hersh, Conception Junction, MO; 3 brothers, Robert (Elizabeth) Robinson, Long Prairie, MN, Donald E. Robinson, Oelwein, IA, Gerald (Carol) Robinson, Waterloo, IA, and sister, Meryl LaSorsa, Georgetown, TX; 8 grandchildren, Jeremiah (Julie) Larabee, Jedidiah Larabee, Brandie Miller, Suzanne Sulzer, Cody (Meghan) Hersh, Jacklyn Hersh, Collin Hemenway, and Jullian Hemenway; 2 great grandchildren, Madison Larabee, and Colton Larabee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Hopkins, MO. The burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, IA

Audrey Mary (LaMaster) Gregory, 96, Guilford, MO, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Maryville, MO.

Audrey was born on a farm near Guilford, MO, on September 17, 1916. She was a homemaker and helped around the farm. She was a lover of music and had taught piano for many years.

On July 5, 1935, she was united in marriage to Leo Arthur Gregory in Albany, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Luther and Hannah Gertrude (Nelson) LaMaster; her husband of 75 years, Leo, in 2010; and 2 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Survivors include one son, Galen Gregory, Guilford, MO; two daughters, Rhonda Tobin, Guilford, MO, and Carolee Nelson, Ravenwood, MO; 4 grandchildren, Denise Wallace, Kevin Wallace, Scott Tobin, Shawn Tobin; and 1 great grandchild, Danielle Manning.

No formal services or visitation are planned. The burial has taken place at the Weathermon Cemetery, Guilford, MO.

Ronnie Henry Newberry, 69, of Zephyrhills, FL, and formerly of Maryville, MO, passed away on April 18, 2013, at a hospice center in Zephyrhills.

Ronnie was born on December 19, 1943, in Maryville, MO. His parents were Carl and Esther (Overmaier) Newberry. He attended Maryville schools and was an accomplished Trumpet player. He had a No. 1 Rating for many years in State band competitions. He enjoyed playing at various church’s and organizations. He later graduated from NWMSU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music.

Ronnie and Marsha formerly lived in Barnard, MO, and operated the C&R Auto Sales, they later moved back to Maryville and took over his Father’s business, Newberry Repair Shop. They then owned and operated the Pumkin Center Auto. After their retirement, they lived at Big Lake, MO, before moving to Florida. Ronnie was an auto body repairman and car salesman for most all his life.

Ronnie enjoyed going to auto auctions, and to goose and deer hunt.

His parents preceded him in death, as well as his grandparents, Blanche Overmaier, Palmer J. Newberry, and Bessie (Hickam) Newberry.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Marsha K. (Hall) Newberry, of the home. They were married on March 14, 1969. One son, Lester W. Newberry, Highland Park, IL; two sisters, his twin, Connie Broz, Galena MO, and Janet Holt, Tulsa, OK; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial graveside services and inurnment will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 15, 2013, at the Oak Lawn Cemetery, Ravenwood, MO. The Rev. Cub Orcutt will be the minister. No formal visitation is planned.

010Kathleen Marie Beilman was born to Joseph and Kate (Gleason) Connell of Shenandoah, Iowa on November 16, 1929. Kathleen married Robert F. Beilman at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Shenandoah, Iowa on November 23, 1954.
Kathleen took great pride in the three children she and Bob raised, dedicating most of her life as a loving mother and homemaker. Later in life she spent numerous years as the officer manager for Western Homestead Mobile Home Manufacture. She was a member of St. John's Nepomuk Catholic Church, Yukon, Oklahoma.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Kate Connell, her husband Robert and brothers, John and Patrick Connell.
Survivors include her children, Bart Beilman and his wife Debbie of Austin, Texas; Lea Ann Beilman of Olney, Maryland; Kit Arthur and her husband Danny of Yukon, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Callie Baker and Bailee Beilman of Austin, Texas, Robert Cadle, Lizzy Cadle and Conner Beilman of Olney Maryland and Heath, Hayley, Hanna and Hayden of Yukon, Oklahoma; three sisters, Helen Castle, Marilyn Turnbull and Marlene Graham all of Shenandoah, Iowa; two brothers, Charles Connell of Nebraska City, Nebraska and Pete Connell of Missouri, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

012Ada Whitehill, the daughter of Taylor and Maley (Collett) Barrett was born November 30, 1933 in Essie, Kentucky. She passed away May 17, 2013 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 17days.

Ada grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Southeast Kentucky with three brothers and three sisters. Growing up as a coal miners daughter was difficult. She met Eldon Duane Whitehill in 1953 and moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. They were united in marriage on August 9, 1953.

For the first couple of years they lived east of Shenandoah on Ferguson Road in a remodeled chicken house. Then they brought 240 acres Southeast of Shenandoah where they both lived out their lives.

Ada had many jobs over the years. In the 60's she worked as a fountain girl at Jay Drug and Woolworth, she was also a cook/waitress for the Shenandoah Country Club and Elks Club. In the 70's, she owned and operated Ada's Cafe. In the 80's and 90's she owned and operated over 30 apartments and she was also a nurses aide at Garden View Care Center. She was a member of the Summit United Methodist Church. She loved to cook, take long walks and collect rocks from different states when traveling.

Preceding Ada in death were her husband Eldon, brothers Joe and Harrison, sisters Elizabeth and Bernice, and grandson Michael. Those left to cherish her memory include sons Randall Whitehill of Kentucky, Rick Whitehill of Coin, Iowa, and Bryan Whitehill of Shenandoah, Iowa, nine grandchildren Traci, Joni, Ashley, Alexa, Andrew, Aaron, Jennifer, Dustin and Jessica

013Elaine Susanna (Martin) Dinville was born on February 26, 1926 in Oakdale, Nebraska, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Rameaker) Martin. Elaine was the third of eight children and the eldest daughter. Elaine entered into eternal peace on May 15, 2013 at the Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

Elaine attended STAR Country School for 8 years (walking 2 miles each way to school) and graduated from Albion High School with the Class of 1943. Upon graduation she moved with her family to a farm near Imogene, Iowa. Elaine worked in Shenandoah for McClelland's Five and Dime for a number of years before starting her banking career at the City National Bank in 1956 until her retirement in 1992.

In July of 1966 Elaine was united in marriage to Thomas A. "Tony" Dinville. The couple made their home in Shenandoah. Elaine was an active member of the community. She was involved in the Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary, Christian Women, St. Mary's Guild, Business and Professional Women, the American Legion Auxiliary and was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling, square dancing, polka dancing, ceramics and fishing and gardening with her husband Tony. Elaine was famous for her scotcharoos and her warm smile.

Although Elaine had no children, she loved being around a house full of little ones and enjoyed her role as "surrogate grandma" to Kerri, Zachary, Courtney and John McGargill. In these last several months every child she saw, she thought was her baby sister Mary Ann.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Vincent, Edward and Marvin. Those left to cherish her memory include her siblings; Ronald Martin and wife Barbara of Green Valley, AZ, Norbert Martin and wife Katy of Shenandoah, IA, Monica Regan of Imogene, IA and Mary Ann Collins of Minneapolis, MN. 014Helen Lucile (Rosenbohm) Richards was born on March 6, 1919 on the family farm in Atchison County, Missouri, the daughter of Charley and Rosa (Cooper) Rosenbohm. Helen entered into eternal peace on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Helen's early years were spent in rural Atchison County, Missouri. She graduated from Westboro High School with the Class of 1936. She later took a correspondence class in bookkeeping.

On December 28, 1938 she was united in marriage to Morris Glen Richards in Harlan, Iowa. The couple resided in Northboro, Iowa, Wichita, Kansas and San Diego, California before returning to Northboro. Helen was a dedicated wife and mother. She served her community as the "Avon Lady" for over 25 years. She also helped her husband by running errands and doing bookkeeping for their business.

Helen was active in her community where she belonged to a bridge club, pinochle club, birthday club, was a member of the Blanchard Eastern Star, the Northboro UMW, and the Northboro Betterment Committee. Some of her hobbies included reading, camping, hosting holiday dinners, crocheting, gardening, canning, and attending bible study. She also enjoyed spending winters in Texas and traveling.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son, Donald G. Richards; parents; and brother, Wayne Rosenbohm.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Lucile Shepard and husband Tom of Bellevue, NE and Louise Stokes and husband Mike of Omaha, NE; sister, Dorothy Bayless of Shenandoah, IA; 4 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild; other family and friends

015Carl Joseph Maher son of Leo Thomas Maher and Stella Elizabeth (Laughlin) Maher was born on March 1, 1931 in rural Imogene, Iowa. Carl passed away on May 10, 2013 at Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 82.

Carl attended St. Patrick Academy. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to June Roenfeld on March 30, 1959 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene, Iowa.

Carl farmed his entire life. He also owned and operated Standard Oil Service Station in Imogene and drove for Wynn's gasoline transport in Omaha. Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Stella Maher, brothers: Tony Maher, Paul Maher, Kenny Maher and Jim Maher, sisters: Helen Carney and Mary Dinovo.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife June Maher of Shenandoah, sons: Brian Maher and wife Marcy of Union, Missouri and Blaine Maher and fiancée Dana Lilly of Essex, Iowa, sister Marcella Lucas of Omaha, Nebraska, and grandchildren Morgan and Nick Maher of Union, Missouri

016Marguerite Marguerite Mackoy Teachout entered into eternal peace on Thursday afternoon at the Elm Heights Care Center, following an extended illness.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to ISU Foundation for 4-H Programs or to the United Methodist Church. In honor of Marguerite and to support reading literacy donate a book to a city or school library or read to a child for grandchild.

Mildred Marguerite Mackoy Teachout was born April 20, 1922, at Cedar Crest farm in the Locust Grove Township of Fremont County, the second of four daughters born to Joseph Beryl and Gladys Hall Mackoy. She developed a life-long love for the farm and all the life that springs from it. Childhood activities included 4-H and cattle showing at the Ak-sar-ben grounds and St. Joseph Livestock Show. Marguerite also belonged to the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1939 and earned a Teaching Certificate from Tarkio College, leading to teaching jobs at Prospect Hill in Walnut Township and Alma Mater in Locust Grove Township.
On May 3, 1942, Marguerite married Harold Wendell Teachout, whom she met at Tarkio College. The young couple moved to San Angelo, Texas, and spent three years at Randolph Field before returning to the family farm in the Summit neighborhood south of Shenandoah in 1945. To this union two children were born: Sherry Janelle and Harold "Mack" Mackoy. Marguerite guided her children through 4-H and Cub Scouts, leading youth in both programs with the same enthusiasm. True to her passion for education, she graduated from Peru State College in 1971 and returned to teaching in the Farragut community schools. As a teacher, Marguerite enjoyed challenging her students and made learning a priority. She took ordinary items and transformed them into teaching tools. She explored history in an authentic way. She inspired her students to find their own voices and express themselves creatively.
Marguerite and Wendell moved to Shenandoah in 1978, both still engaged in the family farm operation with Marguerite teaching school. Upon retirement, they enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and attending activities of their grandchildren in Shenandoah and Guthrie Center. Marguerite proudly celebrated 50-year memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star and Summit United Methodist Church, Ladies of B.P.E.O and was a current member of Shenandoah Methodist Church
The role that she enjoyed the most was that of mother, grandmother and great grandmother, whether hosting or attending annual holiday gatherings, graduations, weddings and birthdays. She also enjoyed planning vacations with her family. Her collection of cookbooks and endless search for recipes delighted family and friends. In retirement she belonged to many bridge groups.
Marguerite was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Josephine Beryl Mackoy Evans and Virginia Mackoy Trautman, brother in-law Clarence Snyder and husband Wendell Teachout. She is survived by her sister Elaine Mackoy Snyder; adult children Sherry Teachout Glenn of Urbandale, Mack Teachout (Carolyn Gilbert) of Farragut; grandchildren Jeremy (Jennifer) Glenn of Chicago and Erin (Greg) Feldmann of Iowa City and Brandon Teachout and friend Miranda Huseth of Washington D.C.; and great grandchildren Allison, Lydia and Annabelle Glenn and Jacob, Nathan, and Lauren Feldmann.

017Joyce Kathleen Mattes McElroy passed away on Wednesday evening at the Shenandoah Medical Center.

Joyce Kathleen (Mattes) McElroy, 84 was born September 23, 1928, on a farm southwest of Hamburg, Iowa and was the daughter of Alfred and Pearl (Cheney) Mattes. She entered into peace Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital.

Joyce attended schools in rural Farragut, graduating from Farragut High School in 1946. She was married to Robert Thomas McElroy on September 17, 1950. This union was blessed with one son, James Robert McElroy.

Joyce participated as a volunteer in many church, school, county and other worthwhile projects for a number of years. She enjoyed her 24 years as secretary/office manager for All-America Rose Selections. Her boss and AARS declared her work "exceptional". She was a life-long member of the Community of Christ Church in Shenandoah.

With many health concerns facing her, she developed a close relationship with God and felt led to write "On The Brighter Side", a spirit-lifting newspaper column, published first in the Evening Sentinel and later in the Valley News for nearly 19 years. Joyce organized and led the Shenandoah's area chapter for the American Diabetes Association for over 10 years. She served on the national ADA's board of directors and was vice-president of patient education. She was a 66-year survivor of Type One Diabetes (a rare feat indeed) and had been recognized several years ago with a special award from the American Diabetes Association.

Joyce had lived at Windsor Manor for the past 11 months. She thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship with the other residents and greatly appreciated all the loving care shown to her from the staff.

Her husband, son, parents and five siblings preceded her in death. Those left to cherish her memory include her sister-in-law Norma Mattes; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

As her parting gift, she willed her body to the Nebraska Medical Center for the purpose of training new doctors and for medical research

018Gary Milton Johnson, age 72, the son of Perl C.M. and Violet E. (Holmes) Johnson, was born January 30, 1941 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He was the youngest of eight children. Gary passed away May 4, 2013 at his home in Essex, Iowa

Gary grew up near Essex, Iowa and attended rural country school and graduated from Essex High School in 1959. In January 1960 he joined the United States Air Force. During his four year tour of duty, he was involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was later sent to Turkey for two months reconnaissance. He was a mechanic on RB47's and B52's.

While in the service he was united in marriage to Peggy A. Bryant on May 5, 1961 in Essex, Iowa. After a 12 year break from military service he joined the Iowa National Guard in Red Oak, Iowa and was sent to Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Desert Storm. After 17 years he retired from the military service.

Before and after his service time he worked for Burnison Construction Company and retired from the Ever Ready Battery Company in 1996. After retirement he worked for area farmers for 10 years.

Gary was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Essex, Iowa, the Eagles Club of Red Oak, Iowa and a past member of the Essex Fire Department. Gary and Peggy owned and operated the local car wash and laundromat for 30 years.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law Herb and Frances Bryant, four infant children, sisters Ruby Livingston, Arlene Burnison, and Shirley Bengtson, brothers Dallas and Oren Johnson, brothers-in-law Glen Burnison, Jim Bengtson, John Bergman and Kenneth Livingston.

Those left to cherish his memory include is wife of 52 years Peggy Johnson of Essex, son Scott R. Johnson of Red Oak, Iowa, sisters Eloise Dinsmore and husband Harold of Farragut, and Jo Ann Bergman, two aunts, an uncle and numerous nieces and nephews

019Rachel Powell Cowen passed away on Tuesday morning at the Garden View Care Center.

Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Baptist Church.

Rachel Cowen was born on October 8, 1915 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to the late Robert and Martha (Blackburn) Powell.  She was born in a log cabin built by her grandfather.  Rachel was raised and schooled in the Mammoth Spring's area.
In 1934, she married Loyd Griffith.  To this union one child, Noel was born.  On February 10, 1947, she was united in marriage with James Cowen in Hutchinson, Kansas.  Two children, Donald and Marjorie, were born to their union.
During World War II, Rachel worked assembling bombs for the Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis, Missouri.  After her marriage to Jim, they engaged in farming in the Hutchinson and Mammoth Spring area before moving to Shenandoah, Iowa in 1952, where they also farmed.  In 1984, Jim and Rachel moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa where they remained until September of 1995 when they returned to Shenandoah.  Through the years, Rachel worked in the hospital, nursing homes and private homes in the Shenandoah area.  Even after retiring, she continued to reach out to others with a gentle hand and loving spirit.  Family and friends have warm memories of her love of baking through the many pies, cakes and bread she shared.  Rachel was a charter member of the Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed serving wherever she was needed.  She taught Sunday school for 27 years and had the pleasure of teaching her own children and grandchildren. 

Rachel was preceded in death by her parents; brother; husband Jim; son Noel Griffith and her former daughter-in-law Joanne Cowen.  Survivors include two children, Donald L. Cowen of Shenandoah and Marjorie A. 020Clint Ross Levings, the son of Herbert Joseph and Ora Roselle (Mefford) Levings, was born November 25, 1919 in Paris, Missouri. Clint graduated from the Public Schools of Monroe County in Paris Missouri in 1937. Clint then attended Missouri University, Columbia, Missouri studying for a degree in agriculture.

On November 30, 1941 Clint was united in marriage to Elnor Fern Dooley in Hannibal, Missouri.

On September 21, 1942, Clint entered the United States Army Air Force and served his country during World War II as a Link Training Instructor, teaching pilots to fly using only instruments. Clint received his honorable discharge on January 11, 1946 and returned to Missouri University to complete his Agricultural Degree in 1947.

In 1947 they moved to Rock Port where Clint was employed as a balanced farming agent with the University of Missouri Extension Office. That same year Clint started Levings Construction. In 1973, his son Roger joined him and operated the business together until Clint retired in 2008. While working as a contractor, he was the recipient of an award for “Missouri Conservation Contractor of the Year” in 1965. The award stated “ Clint was a pioneer of conservation work in its infancy, through his conscientious efforts, quality work and honesty, conservation has become a reliable occupation for many men.”

Elnor passed away in 2009. Clint passed away Friday, May 31, 2013, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care, Tarkio at the age of 93.

Clint was a member of the United Methodist Church, Tarkio and a Charter Member of the Land Improvement Contractor Association. Clint and Elnor were avid supporters of the community. One of Clint’s favorite activities was the Tarkio Fly-In. For many years, he flew his plane, giving rides to all who asked. He loved to follow his grandchildren’s activities, and delighted in being called “Gramps” by his great-granddaughters.

Besides his parents and wife Elnor, Clint was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Levings and his wife Rebecca. Survivors include his son, Roger L. Levings and his wife Kenna, Tarkio; grandchildren, Eric Levings and his wife Mandy, Kansas City, Missouri and Kristy Levings, Lincoln, Nebraska; great granddaughters, Ally Katherine and Ava Lynn Levings, and numerous friends.

021Kenneth Junior Long was born in Hamburg, Iowa, on August 3, 1924 he passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2013, in Rock Port, Missouri. Junior was the son of Kenneth Omar Long and Mabel Marie (Brought) Long. He had one brother Norman (Stub) Long.

The Long family moved to Rock Port in 1935 and Junior attended Rock Port Schools until 1942 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During his first enlistment he was assigned to Company C of the 90th Infantry Training Battalion 19th Regiment. He served in the Asian Pacific Theater of Operations from March 1944 - October 1944. He was honorably discharged from this period of service on February 13, 1946.

After two years of civilian life Junior once again enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to an Engineering Battalion. Although he obligated himself for 3 years he was the lucky recipient of an involuntary one year extension courtesy of the North Koreans and President Harry Truman. This enlistment covered the time period of March 26, 1948 through March 29, 1952 he then received his second honorable discharge.

Military decorations include: Good Conduct Medal (2), Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Victory Ribbon with one overseas bar, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal with 5 Service Stars.

Junior was preceded in death by his parents, his brother (Stub), wife (Betty), and two daughters Kelly and Jackie. He is survived by his son Jeff Long and wife Linda; grandchildren; Cara Davis, Josh Long, Matthew Carder, Troy Hale, Jason Long, Okema Hale, Julie Long, Daryn Bennett, and Aaron Bennett; and 15 great-grandchildren.

022Robert W. “Bob” Chapple, the son of Richard Penn and Ethel (Robinson) Chapple, was born February 17, 1932, in Corso, Missouri. He attended Salisbury High School, Salisbury Missouri, graduating in 1949. Bob then attended the University of Missouri, Columbia, where he joined the ROTC and in 1953, graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. Following graduation, Bob was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, and proudly served his country as a pilot of an F-86 Sabrejet in the 524th Strategic Fighter Squadron during the Cold War, receiving his honorable discharge in July 1956.

On August 23, 1951, Bob was united in marriage to Marilyn Linneman in Salisbury. They became the parents of three children, Larry, Cheri, and Julie. After his honorable discharge, Bob was employed as a University of Missouri Extension Agent trainee in Fayette, Missouri, before moving to Unionville, Missouri, where he was the Putnam County Extension Agent for nine years. In 1964, they moved back to Columbia where Bob completed his Master’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering. In 1966, the family moved to Rock Port, Missouri, where he became the Atchison County Extension Director, retiring in 1999. Bob was a trusted source of information for area agriculture for over 40 years. He especially enjoyed his time working on the newest innovations at the MU Graves-Chapple Research Center and following Mizzou Tiger sports.

Bob was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, the Rock Port Rotary Club, and many other organizations, too numerous to mention. Bob passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013, at Liberty Terrace Healthcare and Rehabilitation, Liberty, Missouri, at the age of 81.

Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by brother, Richard Chapple and sister, Alma Remley. Survivors include wife, Marilyn, of the home, Rock Port; son, Larry Chapple and wife, Sharon, Overland Park, Kansas; daughters, Cheri Dryer and husband, Darrell, Liberty, Missouri and Julie Treloar and husband, Chris, St. Louis, Missouri; grandchildren, Andrew Chapple and wife, Nicole, Valerie Chapple, Kent Dryer and wife, Stacy, Kirk and Kelcie Dryer, and Timothy and Susan Treloar; great-grandchildren, Catherine Chapple and Enslie, Kade and Layne Dryer; sister, Lucille Farrell, Boonville, Missouri; and numerous nieces and nephews.

023Larry Lee Sturtz, the son of Lenard and Wilma (Asbury) Sturtz, was born September 23, 1940, in Newhall, Iowa. He moved to Tarkio, Missouri, when he was five and attended Tarkio schools, graduating high school in 1959.

In 1961, Larry was united in marriage to Joy Harbin. They became the parents of two children. They later divorced. In 1968, he was united in marriage to Kay Watkins. They became the parents of three children. They later divorced. In 1985, Larry met his soul mate, Helen Paris. On May 23, 2003, Larry was united in marriage to Helen and they became the parents of two sons.

Larry was employed as a stocker at Hy-Vee in Tarkio, worked at MBP Excel, in Phelps City, Missouri, and welded gates at Farmaster in Shenandoah, Iowa, before starting his own trash collection business. Larry worked countless hours with Helen, operating Route Collection Services, a waste disposal collection service. He enjoyed playing pool and spending time with Helen, his children, and grandchildren. Larry passed away Friday, May 3, 2013, at his home in Tarkio, at the age of 72.

Besides his parents, Larry was preceded in death by brother, Darrell Sturtz. Survivors include Helen, of the home, Tarkio; seven children, Tenn, Carla, Sandy, Lori, Ron, Jeremy and Nick; three step-children, Richard, Kevin and Dustin; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Pat Gregg, Oakland, Iowa.

024Barbara A. (Anderson) Hunt, daughter of Clyde L. and Mabel L. (McKee) Anderson, was born January 30, 1924, in Marshalltown, Iowa. She attended Clarinda High School, Clarinda, Iowa, graduating in 1942. She then attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1946.

On May 20, 1950, Barbara was united in marriage to Charles Jackson “Jack” Hunt. They became the parents of two children, Lori and Hal, and made their home in the Rock Port, Missouri, area.

Barbara was employed as the Vocational Home Economics teacher at Rock Port High School from 1946-1951. From 1966-1987, she was employed as a social worker, serving as County Director for the Division of Family Services and Atchison County Welfare offices.

Barbara was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and the Kappa Omicron Phi Sorority. Jack passed away in (1973). Barbara passed away Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas, at the age of 89.

Besides her parents and husband, Barbara was preceded in death by brother, James C. Anderson. Survivors include daughter, Lori Weiss and husband, Don, Olathe, Kansas; son, Hal Hunt and wife, Cheryl, Leawood, Kansas; grandchildren, Chris Weiss and his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Eva and Murphy Weiss, Jeff Weiss and his wife, Maida Sussman-Weiss, and their son, Dashiell Weiss, Sarah Randall Hunt and Lauren E. 025Marvin Leroy Adcock was born January 12, 1937 in Auburn, Nebraska, the son of Elmer Claude and Hilda Barbara (Bohling) Adcock. He passed away suddenly Saturday evening, May 18, 2013 at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston, Iowa at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 6 days.

Marvin grew up in the rural Auburn, Nebraska area and graduated from Peru High School in 1955. Following high school he served his country for twenty years between the National Guard and Naval Reserves. He also attended the Nebraska Vocational-Technical School in Millford, Nebraska for two years. On August 10, 1958, Marvin was united in marriage to Jacqueline Jean Pebley in Peru, Nebraska. This union was blessed with two children, Don and Dean.

Following his schooling in Milford, Marvin and Jackie moved to Shenandoah. Marvin worked for several businesses in Shenandoah including Hamm’s Hardware, Montgomery Ward, Brownson Tractor and Bird’s Automotive before starting his 22 year career with the Shenandoah Community Schools as a bus mechanic and transportation supervisor.

In 1989, Marvin became the first ward councilman for Shenandoah and served two terms. In 1999, Marvin returned to take the vacated council at large seat. He was re-elected in 2009 and recently announced that he would seek re-election again this November. He was a member of the American Legion, Odd Fellows, Elks Lodge, Eagles and the Chapter P Gold Wing Riders. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, camping, mowing or just riding his motorcycle. He was also an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. Marvin’s true love was his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Clarence and Grace Pebley and a brother-in-law, Spencer Pebley.

Survivors include his wife Jackie of Shenandoah, Iowa; his two sons, Don Adcock and his fiancé Chris Hansen of Essex, Iowa, Dean Adcock and his wife Chris of Belmond, Iowa; two grandchildren, Emily Adcock of Belmond, Iowa and Steven Adcock of Ames, Iowa; three great grandchildren, Sophia, Emma and Grace; three sisters, Nadine Fahrlander and her husband Phil of Minden, Nebraska, Linda Elze and her husband Michael of Culpepper, Virginia, Barbara Meier and her husband Kevin of Indianola, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Gwen Zeibig and her husband Doug of Steinaur, Nebraska, Sarah Stevicks and her husband Tom of Lincoln, Nebraska; a brother-in-law, Rodney Pebley and his wife Kathy of Peru, Nebraska; along with many other relatives and friends

 

026Georgene Beth Teachout Stinnett was born December 31, 1926 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of George and Gladys (Kendall) Teachout. She passed away on Saturday evening, May 11, 2013 at the Center Point Medical Center in Independence, Missouri at the age of 86 years, 4 months and 11 days. A graduate of Shenandoah High School, she attended night classes at George Washington University while employed as a civilian stenographer for the US Army Signal Corps in the Pentagon during World War II. Later she worked as a stenographer for Congressman John W. Gwynne from Iowa’s third district. On June 9, 1946 she was united in marriage to Wilburn (Bill) Stinnett from Athens, Alabama and, after his discharge from the Navy, managed the office for his plumbing and heating business for ten years then enjoyed a 31 year career with IBM Corporation in Omaha, Chicago and Kansas City, retiring in 1987. For thirteen years Georgene served on the boards of trustees of the Methodist churches to which she belonged in Shenandoah, Omaha and Kansas City. During her three years in the nation’s capital she was a member of Foundry Methodist Church where Dr. Fredrick Brown was pastor as well as chaplain of the U.S. Senate.
Georgene loved to travel, found pleasure in flower gardening, photography, music and writing. She was the editor of her weekly high school newspaper published on the full back page of the local newspaper. Organizations to which she belonged include Walnut Ever Ready 4H Club, Epworth League, Executive Secretaries, Inc., IBM Club, Executive Women International, Shepherds Center of Raytown, New Single Adult Fellowship, Golden Key Club and American Legion Auxiliary Unit #88. Georgene was president of each of these organizations except Shepherds Center. Interestingly, both she and her maternal grandmother were presidents of the American Legion Auxiliary in Shenandoah – Estella M. Kendall in the late 1930’s and Georgene in the 1950’s.
Preceding her in death were her parents, George and Gladys Teachout; daughter, Linda Jean Stinnett; two brothers, Robert and Don Teachout; a sister, Ardyth J. Mercer; and a dear friend, Howard L. Scott.
Survivors include her sons, David Stinnett and his wife Sheri of Sedan, Kansas, Kenneth Stinnett of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren, Rebecca Soppe and her husband Allyn of Boys Town, Nebraska, Sara Maxon and her husband Chris of Omaha, Nebraska, Jarrod Stinnett of Omaha, Nebraska; five great grandchildren, Jessica, Elliot and Charlie Soppe of Boys Town, Nebraska and Oscar and Grant Maxon of Omaha, Nebraska; two sisters, Della Staples of Shenandoah, Iowa and Karen Van Trump and her husband Arnold of Aiken, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Barbara Teachout of Shenandoah, Iowa; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends

Celebration of Life Services for Maurine Strange, age 100, of Lenox, Iowa, who entered into eternal peace Friday, May 31, 2013 at Lenox Care Center, Lenox, Iowa, will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Ritchie Funeral Home in Lenox.. Maurine Mae Strange was born January 12, 1913, on the family farm south of Lenox, Iowa. She was the fifth child born to Robert W. and Minnie (Siebert) Wilson. Her twin brother was Marvin Wilson. She grew up on the family farm with her siblings, Gladys, Mildred, Cecil and Marvin. Maurine attended country school in the area and graduated from the Lenox High School with the Class of 1932.

After graduation, Maurine worked for Dr. Mark Sluss in his medial office for 10 years. In 1950, she was united in marriage to Jim Strange at the First Christian church in Lenox. She and her husband had a fur shop in Nebraska City, Nebraska for many years. Maurine and Jim did not have any children. Maurine moved to Burbank, California in 1956. While living in California, she worked in a hospital for r13 years. After that she worked babysitting children which she thoroughly enjoyed. In 1970, her husband passed away.

In 1990, at the age of 77, Maurine decided it was time to move back home to the Lenox area. She and a friend drove all the way back to Lenox. She purchased a home in Creston where she resided until February of 2010. At this time, she moved into the Lenox Care Center where she resided until her death. The staff gave her wonderful care and she seemed to be happy living there.

Maurine is survived by nieces and nephews, Mark Wilson and wife Cheryl; Anne Nette Hanson and husband Stan; Carol Garrity; Robin McGary and husband Steve; Janie Ferguson; Nancy Pennington; Donna Jean Houston and husband Ed; along with many great and great-great-grand nieces and nephews.

Raymond Thomas Brandon was born October 28, 1926 in Lamar, Missouri; he was the son of Daniel and Rachel (Allen) Brandon. Raymond met Bonnie Chaney and on June 18, 1955 they were united in marriage. Raymond worked multiple places in his lifetime as a laborer but enjoyed scraping iron the most. Raymond lived in Burlington Junction, Missouri most of his life until he moved to Gravity, Iowa n 1979. He then moved to Lenox in the early 1990s and then moving into the Lenox Care Center in November of 2004. Raymond finally moved into the Bedford Nursing and Rehab in January of 2010. Raymond was an avid fisherman who loved being outdoors. He also enjoyed drinking in his younger years, hunting, laughing, and most of all, spending time with his family.

Mary Harris was born June 8, 1922 at Hartley, Iowa to Peter Graff and Anna (Poos) Graff. She graduated from Akron High School, Akron, Iowa on May 23, 1940. She graduated from Mercy College of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa with an R.N. degree in 1944. Mary and Lyle Harris were united in marriage March 25, 1946 at Hiawatha, Kansas. After her marriage to Lyle they lived on the family farm north of New Market for over 50 years. They were blessed with three sons, Thomas, Stephen and Roger.

Mary's passion was her family. Her parents emigrated from Europe instilling a strong work ethic and the importance of family, which she continued through her life. As a farm wife she gardened, raised chickens, sold eggs, milked a cow, and enjoyed her flowers. She did all these things while working full time.

When her boys were young she had time to take them fishing and welcomed their friends into their home. As the grandkids came along Grandma loved to hear about their activities and lives. Summer time fun abounded when the grandkids from Washington came to visit. Her door was always open and she always had time to play. In later years she loved seeing her great grandchildren, watching them grow and change. She always called them her "greats."

Mary was a Registered Nurse who began her career at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital in 1944. She came to Clarinda along with 4 other young nurses from Sioux City. In the early years of her career she did private nursing and went along with patients to the city. She was the "Charge Nurse" on the 2nd floor and cared for many people over her 40 plus years at the hospital.

Mary enjoyed life to its fullest and was always ready for a fun time. She loved cooking for her family, friends and anyone who stopped by. The coffee pot was always on and salesmen used to make it a point to stop by around lunch for her wonderful meals. She will especially be remembered for her fried chicken, noodles, dilly bread and cinnamon rolls. She loved to try new recipes out of her many cookbooks. Mary belonged to several clubs, always enjoying the dominos, cards, and visiting. She was also a 50 plus year member of Eastern Star and the New Market United Methodist Church.

Kenneth Albert Weems was born July 11, 1956 in Coushatta, Louisiana the son of Marvell Waymon Weems and Vertis Mae (Thomas) Weems. He grew up attending school, graduating from Hall Summit High School with the Class of 1975. In 1991, Kenneth met his future wife Judith Lininger and on February 16, 2005 they were united in marriage in Texas. Kenneth was an avid fisherman who loved being outdoors. He also enjoyed hunting, bird watching, reading and watching Dale Earnhart in NASCAR races.

Left to cherish Kenneth's memory is his loving wife, Judi Weems of Bedford; his mother, Vertis Weems of Ringgold, Louisiana; two step-sons, Dean Harwell of Bedford; Lee Harwell of St. Joseph, Missouri; a sister, Ruth Ann Lowrance of Hall Summit, Louisiana; a brother-in-law, Jerry Lininger and wife Reada of Savannah, Missouri; niece, Rachel Layfield and Claudia Putnam and husband Steve Putnam of Bedford; great-nieces, Camryn Layfield and Emma Putnam; a great-nephew, Parker Davison-Putnam; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

031Bernard Max Wolf, the son of Charles Paul and Mary Josephine (Harvey) Wolf, was born on November 30, 1924, at his parents’ home in Imlay, South Dakota, with midwife Nancy Iron Tooth attending. Bernard began attending school at age 6, riding horseback five miles to reach the school. The family later moved to Rocky Ford, South Dakota, on the White River, when a school was built there. Bernard completed first-sixth grades there before the family moved to Rock Port, Missouri, where he finished seventh and eighth grades.

When Bernard was seven, his father bought him a 22 hunting rifle, and for many years, Bernard helped feed the family using his hunting skills. In 1943, at the age of 18, he joined the United States Army and was sent to Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Here he became a member of the fledgling 17th Airborne Division; later, he joined the paratroopers, and proudly received his paratrooper and glider wings. Bernard received his honorable discharge in 1946. In March 2013, he traveled to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he visited the few remaining friends of the 17th Airborne Division.

On February 1, 1953, Bernard married Shirley Ann King at the Chamberlain Wedding Chapel in Rock Port, Missouri. The couple had two children, Deborah Kay and Michael Paul. Bernard worked as a mechanic in construction and farm implements before owning Wolf Parts and Service in Harlan, Iowa.

Bernard was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlan. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner. Bernard’s love for family and friends molded him into a remarkable person, and he will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends. “Until we meet again.”

Bernard M. Wolf died on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having reached the age of 88 years, 6 months, and 16 days.

Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Kirk and Verna Vette; and one infant brother, Charles Wolf. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Wolf of Harlan, Iowa; one son, Michael (Erin) Wolf of Glidden, Iowa; one daughter, Deborah (Stephen) Jurshak of Murray, Iowa; three sisters, Myrtle (Kenneth) Mapes of Omaha, Nebraska, Clara VanCleave of Millard, Nebraska, and Dorothy Shearer of Syracuse, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Aaron (Elizabeth) Wolf, Adam (Gina) Wolf, Kristin (Tim) Allen, Elizabeth (Andrew) Ray and Mona Jurshak; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was held on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa, with Pastor Darwin Moore officiating. Sandy Carroll was the organist, and Lee Nelson served as the soloist. Honorary casket bearers were Brenda Lutz, Steve Ellenwood, John Tyner, Gary Jorgensen, Alfred Olson, and Kenneth Mapes. Active bearers were Aaron Wolf, Richard Jorgensen, Adam Wolf, Rodney Mapes, Marvin Kelly Lutz, and William P. Lutz. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Harlan, Iowa, or Omaha Home for Boys, Omaha, Nebraska. Gretchen Timberlake Hensley was born on January 8, 1932 in Maryville, Missouri at Saint Francis Hospital. Her parents were Verne and Helen (Keith) Timberlake of Bedford. She attended the Timberlake School, a one room country school, the first eight years of her formal education and high school in Bedford to graduate with the class of 1949.
In 1950 she was united in marriage to Dean Hensley and on September 26, 1956 their son, Thomas Mark was born.
Gretchen worked at as a secretary for many years at Farm Bureau, Lucas Products, and Head Start just to name a few. Later she attended Iowa Western Community College at Clarinda and completed the LPN course. She spent the next few years working in care centers and private care as an LPN.
Caring for people was not Gretchen's only passion. She also loved animals, especially dogs and cats. Over the years she raised and cared for many of the little critters.
In recent times failing health brought her to Humeston to live with her son Tom. She enjoyed the time she was able to spend with him.
She is survived by her son, Tom, grand-daughter Amanda Ann. She also has two great grandsons, Carter and Chase. Survivors also include sister, Ann Robinson and husband Ray along with many other family and friends.

Lucile Dorothy Trumbo (known to her family as "A.L." for Aunt Lucy) was born on November 20, 1917, the daughter of Paul Trumbo and Jenny (Marley) Trumbo. She had one brother, Francis "Pinky" Trumbo.
Lucile lived most of her life in Bedford where she graduated from high school. For many years she was employed by the Bedford National Bank and later moved to Creston to work for the AEA. She enjoyed her trips back to Bedford on the weekends to attend church and visit with friends. She retired from the AEA after 15 years and moved back to Bedford.
Lucile enjoyed listening to and watching baseball games, always cheering on her favorite team, the St. Louis Cardinals. She enjoyed other sports as well. She was a dedicated member of the United Christian Presbyterian Church of Bedford. She served as the church treasurer for many years. Without fail, you would find Lucile I n the church kitchen helping prepare bereavement dinners.
She was a loving and cherished Aunt to three nephews, Mike (Belinda), Gary (Chris) and Thom; seven great-nephews, Kevin, Steven, Ryan (Lacey), Jared (Chyloe), Daniel, Matthew (Teresa) and Chad (Molly); six great-great-nephews, Keegan, Jake, Reese, Reid Beckett and Nash; and three great great-nieces, Ainsley, Jane Dare and Saely.
Lucile was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Francis "Pinky" Trumbo, and her sister-in-law, Mary Trumbo. Lucile is now reunited with her family in Heaven, and most likely, they are already watching baseball games together!

034Kenneth Johnson was born May 15, 1927 at the family home in the East River Township, East of Shambaugh; a son to Roy A. and Ethel G. (Young) Johnson. He attended grade school at Lindsey Country School and in 1945 graduated from New Market High School. Later that year, Kenneth joined the United States Navy and served his country for one year. Upon being Honorably discharged, he returned back to the SW Iowa area. Kenneth married Joyce Wylene Brown on March 25, 1951 and this union was blessed with two children: Sandy and Kenneth, Jr. Kenneth was a farmer and did so for his whole life. Upon Joyce’s retirement in 1997, they began taking trips with their camper, wintering in Donna, Texas. They enjoyed spending time with the family and friends from the area. Kenneth also drove the school bus for the South Page Schools for many years. He had many hobbies such as going on fishing trips, golf outings and being a part of the local Legion. Kenneth was an avid Hawkeye and Cardinal fan. He loved watching and listening to all of their games.
Kenneth passed away at the age of 86 on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at the Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Iona Lung and husband Percy; brother Roy “Mick” Johnson and wife Maurine; brother-in-law Charles Tritsch; nephew Alan Johnson and niece Debbie Johnson.
Surviving Kenneth is his wife of 62 years, Joyce of Blanchard; children: Sandy Pratt and husband Bruce of St. Joseph, MO and Kenneth, Jr. Johnson and wife Diane of Blanchard; grandchildren: Brad Pratt of St. Joseph, MO Jeff Pratt of St. Joseph, MO Jeremy “Hoss” Pratt and wife Mykanna of Plano, TX, Brandon Pratt of Kansas City, Shana Garrett and husband Andrew of Yorktown, VA, Heather Sharr and husband Aaron of Clarinda and Keenan Johnson of Clarinda; 12 great grandchildren; sister Ruth Tritsch of Braddyville; brothers-in-law: Robert “Skip” Brown and wife Gretchen of St. Louis, MO and Bruce Brown of Creston; sisters-in-law: Karen Smith and husband David of Kansas City and Jane Wright and husband Bob of Des Moines; along with an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Kenneth will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 6, 2013 at the Presbyterian Church in College Springs with burial following the service in the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation with the family greeting friends is scheduled from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda. Memorials are suggested to Heartland Hospice, Presbyterian Church in College Springs, College Springs Fire Department or the College Springs Community Building.

035Brice Glenn Johnson, 78, of Goodyear, AZ passed away on Saturday, June 1. He was born on June 3, 1934 on the rural Taylor County farm to Mary Melvin and LeRoy Ellis Johnson.
He graduated from Gravity High School and joined the US Army Nov. 30, 1954. He was discharged with a Medal of Good Honor on Nov. 14, 1957 and continued to serve under the Army Reserves until Nov., 29, 1962. Brice had recently been awarded the Freedom Team Salute Award from the US Army for his continued service to his county.
Upon return to the family farm he continued his education at Iowa Western Community College where he met his future bride, Carolyn Mae Pugh. They were united in marriage at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenox, Iowa on June 28, 1959. They later settled on the family farm near Gravity, Iowa were they raised their family, Deborah and Brent. Along with being an farmer raising livestock and crops Brice was also very active in various community activities of which some included the Gravity Volunteer Fire Department, the Gravity Masonic Lodge (which is now part of the Bedford Masonic Lodge and from which he was awarded via the Grand Lodge of Iowa his 50 year membership), the Bedford Community School Board, Iowa Cattlemen's Association, various other community events, school and sporting events, and other various organizations. Brice and Carolyn relocated to Arizona in 1986 and enjoyed the warmth while exploring the Southwest.
Left to cherish his memory is daughter Deborah of Goodyear, son Brent (Tamara) of Spirit Lake, grandson Marcus, step-grandson Chad (Liz), sister Irene, brothers Edward and Russel, and sister-in-law Marlene, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

036Frances Marie Ramona Hogberg, the daughter of Frans Oscar and Hilma M. (Nadgwick) Patterson was born October 10, 1913 at Essex, Iowa. She passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 99 years, 7 months and 15 days.
Frances was born and raised in the Essex and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. In l931, Francis graduated from Essex High School. She attended Red Oak Junior College and then taught at Golden Rod and Maple Hill country schools for 7 years. On July 31, 1940, Frances was united in marriage to Gordon Hogberg in Essex, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Stanton. In 1959, Frances began teaching elementary education for the Stanton School District. During this time, she completed and received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 1978, Frances retired, totaling 26 years of teaching and influencing youth. She was an active member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stanton. Frances was supportive and involved with various community events in Stanton. She loved her family and friends dearly, living on the farm, and being independent, as she lived at home until moving to the Stanton Care Center a few months ago.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gordon on March 21, 1999; daughter, Clarice; son-in-law, Jim Boatman; and three brothers: Lawrence, Clifford and Elmer.
Frances is survived by two children: Ramona Boatman of Herndon, VA, and Maynard Hogberg and wife Anne of Ames, IA; four grandchildren: Cindy Brooking and husband Lance of Ellenwood, GA, Curt Boatman of Herndon, VA, Mike Hogberg and wife Kate of Denver, CO, and Emily Smalley and husband Scott of Independence, IA; four great-grandchildren: Clarice and Lane Brooking, Emmett Hogberg and Braden Smalley; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and many friends.
May God bless her memory and give strength to those who mourn.
