002Mary Lucille Watts was born March 19, 1924 in Jones Creek Waldron, Arkansas, the daughter of Jasper Dale and Minnie Callie (Essman) Barrett. She passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at the Clarinda Regional Medical Center at the age of 87. Lucille, or Lucy to her friends, grew up in Jones Creek Waldron Arkansas and then later moved with her parents to Grantville, Kansas. She got her GED and completed some college work at the Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas after her children were grown. On November 28, 1941 she was united in marriage to Howard Edward Watts. Howard and Lucille have three children: Barbara, Patricia and Jerry. Howard preceded her in death on October 15, 2001. Barbara preceded her in death on May 31, 2011. Lucy was active in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church as a Sabbath School leader and teacher. For many years she worked as a seamstress making custom draperies and bed spreads. She also did custom upholstery work. Lucille and Howard moved to Clarinda, Iowa in May 1998 after she had undergone open heart surgery. After moving to Clarinda she enjoyed quilting with her daughter Barbara and the Scrap Happy Quilt Guild. Survivors include daughter, Patricia Trayer of Clarinda, Iowa; son Jerry and wife Patricia Watts of Rose Hill, Kansas; Son-in-law Ronald Livengood of Clarinda, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Brian Barker and friend Sharla of Taos, New Mexico, Bret Livengood of Story City, Iowa, Tim Livengood and fiancé Wendy of Ames, Iowa, Kris and husband David Moes of Chanhassen, Minnesota, Joy Ingraham of Westminster, Colorado, Jason and wife Brandie Watts of Spencer, Oklahoma, Justin and wife Sara Watts of Wichita, Kansas; fourteen great grandchildren; a sister Jean and husband Bob Duffin of Topeka, Kansas; brother Ronald and wife Marlee Barrett of Logan, Utah; brother Larry and wife Mary Lou Barrett of Stratham, New Hampshire. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Jack Barrett; and a sister, Darlene Smith. Funeral services for Mary Lucille Watts, 87 of rural Clarinda, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan 7, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with Jason Watts giving words of comfort. 004Glenn H. Smith, 93 of Nevada died on Friday, January 13, 2012 at Story County Senior Care in Nevada. Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 17 at Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada with Pastor Tom Lee officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will be held in the Clarinda Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Glenn was born on September 7, 1918 in Clarinda, Iowa to William H. and Goldie Ruth (Humphrey) Smith. He served with the 90th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army and earned the Silver Star. On March 21, 1942, Glenn married Edna I. Thompson in Maryville, MO. He was employed with O.K. Tire Shop, now known as Big 8 Tyre Center in Nevada. Glenn was a member of the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48, V.F.W. Nevada Post #2209, and also was an avid member of the Democratic Party. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and loved spending time with his great grandchildren. Glenn is survived by a son, Garey (Carole) Smith of Maxwell; 3 grandchildren Todd Smith, Eric Smith, and Candace Ashman; 5 great-grandchildren. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Edna on March 18, 2004, a brother Kenneth Smith, and a sister Ilene. 005Dale Maynard Anderson, formerly of Martelle, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Kingswood Senior Living Community, Kansas City, MO, surrounded by his family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Dale was born February 27, 1928, to J.J. and Hilda Anderson, on a farm near New Market, Iowa. He graduated from New Market High School in 1945. After high school, he graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1951 with a Commerce Degree, and a 2nd Lt. Commission from the U.S. Army ROTC program. Dale then served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 10 years. On June 17, 1951, he married Doris Evelyn Andrew. They began farming with his parents northeast of New Market. In 1960, he and Doris moved from the farm and began Dale’s 32 year career in banking. He initially worked at the First National Bank, Logan, Iowa, and then moved to Martelle, Iowa in 1963, where he was the manager and then President of the Farmers Savings Bank until his retirement in 1992. Doris worked with Dale at the Martelle bank for many years. Dale was also a real estate broker, appraiser, and insurance agent serving the Martelle community. Dale was very active in the Martelle community, including being a 48 year member of the Martelle United Methodist Church, serving as Martelle City treasurer, numerous years on the board of the Anamosa Community Hospital and member of the Masons, Knights of Pythias, and Martelle Volunteer Fire Department. In 1972 he served as the Chairman for the Martelle Centennial Celebration, at which over 10,000 people attended the 3 day event, including Governor Robert Ray, Senator John Culver, and numerous other state and local officials. After retirement, Dale and Doris continued their love of travel, including making several trips to Sweden where he located his family ancestral records, played golf at St. Andrews, Scotland, visited numerous European countries, and experienced the Holy Land. Throughout his adult life, Dale was a proud alumni and passionate supporter of the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball teams; including attending all home games and following the Hawks to tournaments in Alaska, Hawaii, and games at all Big Ten schools. He maintained his season football tickets for 45 consecutive years and loved to talk about the days the Hawks were able to beat those Cyclones. Dale was preceded in death by his wife Doris in 2009, parents, brothers Duane and Ronald Anderson, sisters-in-law Helen and Ethel Anderson, and brother-in-law Wayne Kerr. He is survived by his sisters Lois (Kenneth) Garrett, Clarinda, IA, and Elynor Kerr, Leesburg, VA; children, Denean (Mark) Smith of De Pere, WI, and Dean (Marcia) Anderson of Overland Park, KS; granddaughters Kristin and Sarah Smith and Katie Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dale’s family appreciates all the care and support provided by the staff of Kingswood Senior Living Community. 006Wayne Leeland Anderson, son of Edwin and Anna (Johnson) Anderson, was born December 15, 1918, in Page County, near Essex, Iowa, and passed away on January 7, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Villisca, Iowa. Wayne was raised on a farm near Essex, Iowa. He was a confirmed member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church. The family moved to a farm in the Red Oak area where he attended Red Oak High School through his junior year. Then the family moved to the Nodaway area where he graduated from Nodaway High School in 1936 and started farming north of Nodaway. He was married to Elsie Bixler of Carl, Iowa on February 23, 1941, at the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church parsonage in Villisca, Iowa. They moved to a farm in Douglas Township near Corning, Iowa in 1941 where they raised three sons and, together they managed and worked a diversified farming operation for 50 years before moving to Corning, Iowa. He was a good steward of the soil and used good conservation practices on the farm where he raised registered Hereford cattle, hogs and diversified crops. His life centered around family activities, vacations, neighborhood soup suppers, card parties, square dancing and country school activities. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He was an active member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church and after moving to Corning, he became a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Corning. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Gary Anderson and sister Geraldine Bloom. 007Lyle Douglas Green, son of Roy Orsen and Mable Dorothy (Dahlgren) Green, was born on May 20, 1948 in Hamburg, Iowa. He passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 on the family farm north of Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 63 years, 7 months, 21 days. The Green family lived on a farm north of Imogene at the time of Lyle’s birth. In 1950 the family moved to Sioux City, Iowa before moving back to Shenandoah in 1951. In 1952, they purchased the family farm north of Shenandoah where Lyle would reside the majority of his life. Lyle attended the Shenandoah Community Schools graduating with the Shenandoah High School Class of 1966. On February 7, 1968, Lyle was drafted into the Army during Vietnam. He was stationed at Fort Louis in Washington. He received the National Defense and Sharpshooter Rifle Medals. Following his Honorable Discharge from the Army, Lyle worked for J. C. Penney’s in Shenandoah. When Penney’s closed he immediately began working for Bernie’s Gambles Store. He continued in the same position when the business was later sold and became Shenandoah Home Furnishings. Lyle worked on Main Street for over 40 years. In 1989, Lyle moved back to the farm to care for his mother, Mable. He cared for her for over 23 years until her recent passing in October of 2011. Preceding Lyle in death were his parents. Survivors include his two brothers, Ronald Green and his wife Kathy and Curtis Green all of Shenandoah; sister, Atoya Oliver and her husband Steve of Sac City, Iowa; 16 nieces and nephews; 17 great nieces and nephews; and innumerable friends and loved ones |
008Hope, 3 months old, passed away early Friday morning, January 13, 2012 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Hope is the daughter of April Roberts and Jacob Hambright. Memorials may be directed to the family. Hope’s original name was to be Aubri Patricia, but the moment April saw her, she felt the Lord say her name is Hope. She weighed little over 2 lbs but in that little body survived a strong spirit to survive and fight for life. We all felt a part of Hope in our hearts as we prayed for her and April on a daily basis and she grew in our hearts in a way that only God can inspire. Our little Hope passed into the Lord’s arms at 4:29 a.m. on January 13th, 2012. Hope Patricia will always hold a very special place in our hearts as we look forward to the day we will all see her dancing on streets of gold in the presence of our Lord. She brought so much love to all that were touched by her life, she will be missed here, but we are comforted in knowing she is with Jesus now. Earl Clarence Warner was born December 27, 1919, near Coin, Iowa, the fourth of six children of Walter Clayton Warner and Augusta (Windhorst) Warner. Earl attended Page County schools. He was blessed with good health and amazing strength and hired out at whatever work was available during the Great Depression. After the outbreak of World War II, Earl enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged September 15, 1945 at Saint Louis, Missouri and came home to farm in East River Township. Earl was married to Marian Adelaide (Parks) Warner on June 30, 1943, at the First Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa. Earl & Marian had three daughters, Margaret Jean (Reiber), Patricia Ann (Spangler), and Christine Louise (Karg). Marian passed away at their home in Clarinda on April 20, 1990. Church, family and community activities played an important role in Earl's life. He served as an Elder and board member of First Christian Church for many years. Earl was active in Farm Bureau and served on the Farmers Home Administration Board. He served two terms on the Clarinda Community School Board and six years on Page County Board of Supervisors. He was recognized for conservation and soil management practices carried out on his farm. He received the Environmental award in 1977 for pasture management and the Emmett Zollars Award for individual conservation work in 1983. He strongly believed the soil must be preserved for future generations. Earl was married to Helen Thompson on April 27, 1991, in Mesa, Arizona, where they made their home until her passing in 2001. He often said that a man is fortunate to have one good wife, but he was blessed with two. Earl returned to Clarinda in 2006 and lived at the Eiler House and then with daughter Chris and husband Randy Karg from 2008 until he moved to Westridge Care Facility in June 2011, where he passed away on January 18, 2012. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Marian (Parks) and Helen (Thompson); sister, Gloe Johnston; brothers, Emmett, Homer, and Walter Jr.; two sons-in-laws, William Reiber and Martin Gordon and step grandson, Martin Gordon Jr.. He is survived by his sister, Jule and husband Darrell Nelson of Pueblo, Colorado; daughters, Margaret Reiber of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ann Spangler and husband Regan of Omaha, Nebraska and Christine and husband Randy Karg of Clarinda. Earl took special pride in his four grandchildren and eight and a half great-grandchildren, Ryan and Shelly (McPherson) Spangler of Omaha, Kristen, Bruce, Lydia, Gavin, Colin and Liam Downs of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Brandon, Karyn, Morgan and Cameron Reiber of Chicago, and Amber, David, Kohl and Augusta and June baby Wiens of Lincoln, Nebraska. At the age of one year, her family moved to a farm near Emerson, Iowa and she grew up in the Emerson area attending rural schools and graduating from Wales-Lincoln High School in 1940. She attended Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing where she received her R.N. degree in 1945. After the war, a sailor by the name of Walt Warner came into her life and the couple was united in marriage on October 22, 1947 at the Christian Church, Clarinda, Iowa. They were blessed with three children, Patrick Clayton, Michael Mahan and Lori Lee. Jewell began her employment as a registered nurse at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital in 1945. With the exception of a ten month employment at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute, she spent her nursing career at the Clarinda Municipal Hospital. Jewell was Director of Nursing 1968-1977 and returned to floor duty until her retirement in 1988. She was a compassionate, caring person and continued to be a caregiver always giving of herself to others. Jewell was a blessing to others and a mentor for many young nurses. Jewell's family was very important to her and she never forgot a family member's birthday or anniversary. She was an excellent cook and loved to cook for her family and for church activities. Jewell is remembered by her family as a gracious hostess that made meals very special with her beautiful table settings. She also enjoyed crocheting and the yearly trips that she and Walt took to see family in Arizona and Colorado. Preceding Jewell in death were her parents; husband Walt Warner (August 25, 2007); great grandson, Logan Thornton. 011Charles Edward Hobbick was born March 26, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Frank Edward and Nadine Noma (Noel) Hobbick. He passed away on Saturday morning, January 7, 2012 at his home in Creston, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 9 months and 12 days. Charles grew up in Omaha and attended Omaha Public School. Following high school he served his country in the United States Navy. On February 2, 1977, he was united in marriage to Sherryll Simons. This union was blessed with two children, Christina and Charles Eric. Following his tour in the Navy, Charles drove a truck for many years. He was a hard worker and enjoyed his work. The true love of his life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Noma; and his step father, Donald Lawver. 012Alan Leroy Kleckner was born April 3, 1928 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of William S. and Eleanore Mae (Coffman) Kleckner. He passed away on Saturday evening, December 31, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Blue Springs, Missouri at the age of 83 years, 8 months and 28 days. Alan grew up in the Farragut area and graduated from Farragut High School in 1945. Following high school he attended Iowa State University in Ames for one year. At that time, Alan’s good friend, Mr. R.F.Bickett told him should attend the railroad school in Chicago, Illinois. Alan took his advice and this started a very successful career with the railroad. He served a number of depots in Iowa with Farragut, Sidney and Villisca being a few. He later served with Burlington Northern Railroad throughout Missouri and Kansas. He enjoyed his many years with the railroad. Alan loved the outdoors, especially trapping and fishing. He had been a member of the Friendship Masonic Lodge #379 of Farragut, Iowa as well as the Farragut United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carolyn; brother-in-law, Kennard Tompkins; and a nephew, Kevin Tompkins. 013Jeanne A. Rolf, daughter of Bazil Harold Howland and Mabel Josephine Johnson was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1928 at the home of her grandparents in Shenandoah, Iowa. She passed away early Sunday morning, January 15, 2012 at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 1 day. Jeanne grew up in Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1946. She grew up during the last of the Great Depression when life was very tough. She loved school and particularly reading, so much that she would walk through the snow drifts taller than her just to get to school. Jeanne went to work at the public library in Shenandoah after her children were in high school. She worked her way up to assistant librarian during her 15 years there. She retired from the library in 1983. Jeanne was also instrumental in getting the Page County History Book published. Jeanne had a love for all animals, but in particular cats. She had many house cats throughout her married life with Walter. Stray cats were not strays anymore when they stopped by her house. She was the first woman to be president of the church council at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of rural Northboro. She became Lutheran when she married Walter on June 18, 1950 at St. Paul’s, and that became her church. Her faith and her unwavering diligence to not miss going to church laid the foundation for her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren Ty and Toni were absolutely the joy of her life. She was so proud of them and all they have accomplished, whether it was sports or academics. She and Walter tried not to miss any of their Jr. High, High School or College games. Walter and Jeanne took many vacations throughout their married life, but the most enjoyable were the ones that included taking their grandkids. She was proud of her children Deborah and Chris for what they had done with their lives. Chris and his motorcycles and his unbelievable mechanical knowledge for working on them and any other vehicle, and Deb for her years of teaching Sunday School and being so close by to help her and Walter. She cared so much for her son-in-law Terry, for all his talent in making beautiful furniture. She would get so mad if a referee or another coach would yell at Terry in a game he was coaching. She was also thankful for her new granddaughter, Kerra (Ty’s wife) and soon to be new grandson, Dustin (Toni’s fiancé). They helped complete her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Jim Howland. 014Mildred Vivian (Jackson) Leek was born February 7, 1913 in Coin, Iowa; the daughter of Pleas and Margaret Jackson. Mildred attended and graduated from Northboro High School and continued her education at Peru State College for one year. After finishing her schooling, she taught for five years at North Star and High Creek Country Schools. Mildred was united in marriage to John Reed Leek on March 7, 1936 in Auburn, Nebraska. To this union were born four children: Donna, Lawrence, Dennis and Rodger. Mildred worked as a homemaker on their farm near New Market until moving into town in 2006. Mildred passed away at the age of 98 on January 25, 2012 at Clarinda Regional Health Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John; sister Dorothy Murphy; brothers: Wayne, Paul and Lloyd Jackson; son-in-law Merlin LaVon Gray; daughter-in-law Martha Leek and great granddaughter Alexandra Lane Gray. Charles Phillip Tritsch was born June 27, 1927 to Carl Edward Tritsch and Mary Frances (Gray) Tritsch in Percival, Iowa. His parents later moved to Farragut, Iowa. Charles graduated from Farragut High School in 1945. Following graduation, Charles started farming with his father and farmed many years. In 1953, on September 6 he was married to Naomi Ruth Johnson in College Springs, Iowa at the Methodist Church. They were blessed with two children, Vicki Jeanine Tritsch born January 1956 who married Michael Nally and Gary Charles Tritsch born June 1957 and married Teresa Scroggs. Charles received his Second Lieutenant commission in the National Guard of Iowa at Ft. Benning, Georgia in 1955. He was company commander of Clarinda, Villisca, and Corning Units and served on the Battalion Staff. He retired as a Captain. Charles was appointed to the Page County Board of Supervisors in 1982 and served on the board for ten years. Charles was a fifty year Mason. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Clarinda and the Together Sunday School Class. In 1982, Charles and Ruth retired to watch many sports, music, and drama performances at Clarinda and South Page Schools that their seven grandchildren were engaged in. They enjoyed traveling until Charles' health started to decline and their traveling became limited and they just enjoyed family in Braddyville after living fifty five years on the farm. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Tritsch; parents-in-law, Roy and Ethel Johnson; brothers, Jack and Delbert Tritsch; nieces, Judy Smith and Patti Switzer. Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruth Tritsch of Braddyville, Iowa; children, Mike and Vicki Nally of Braddyville, Iowa and Gary and Teresa Tritsch of Clarinda, Iowa; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Stacey Nally Woodyard and husband Rick and children Erik and Emily ~ Brenda Nally Rhodes and husband Keith and children Justen, Brianna, Devin, Cadence ~ Tiffany Tritsch Gregory and husband Patrick and children Taylor and Derrick ~ Chad Nally and wife Marcy (Foster) and children Damon and Mason ~ Jeremy Tritsch ~ Tamra Nally Aune and fiancé Nick Davis and daughter Katelyn Aune ~ Kaley Tritsch Neal and husband Keith and daughter Bailey; brother, Myron Tritsch of Clarinda; nieces; nephews and many friends. 016Richard Lee Blake was born October 15, 1947 at Clarinda, Iowa. He was the oldest son of Robert Leroy Blake and Beatrice Faye Boyd. Richard grew up on farms around the Bedford area. He attended school at several country schools and got his high school diploma at Bedford Community High School. Richard was active in 4-H and enjoyed showing dairy cattle at several Iowa shows. After graduation he attended Northwest Missouri State for a short time and worked on the railroad out of Creston. He enlisted in the US Army in 1966. Richard married his high school sweetheart Judy Carole Dugan on July 23, 1967. The couple then moved to Izmir, Turkey, where Richard would be stationed for the next few years. Richard was an equipment specialist for top secret encoding machines and was on several Vietnam era black-ops in the Far and Middle East. This is something that he was both proud of and had a hard time dealing with. Their oldest son Jeffery was born in Izmir. Richard and Judy moved back to Iowa in 1970 and the couple farmed in the Gravity and Bedford regions for several years. Sons, Jim, Josh and Jason were born during this time period at Clarinda, Iowa. They raised their boys on dairy farms. Richard quit farming during the 1980s farm crisis. He took a job as a prison guard at the Clarinda Treatment Complex and would work there for the next 20 years. Richard had many co-worker friends and enjoyed spending time with them and his family. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, boating and beer drinking every chance that he got. He was a good card player and hard to beat in croquet. Richard retired from the prison in 1999. He then spent his time helping Judy on her family farm and raising dogs, sheep, and horses. Richard enjoyed being a source of advice on the farm and watching everyone work. He was especially fond of watching TV and in his last years nearly wore out the best spot in front of his large, flat-screen, hi-def television. He was a long time member of the Gravity American Legion. Richard is survived by; Judy, his wife of 44 years; his mother Beatrice Blake of Keota, IA; his son’s, Jeffery Blake and his girlfriend Fran of Bedford, Jim Blake of Lincoln, NE, Josh Blake and his wife Jessica of Gravity, and Jason Blake of Lincoln, NE; and grandchildren Echo Blake of Maryville, MO, and Milo Blake of Ames, IA, and daughter -in-law Shannon Blake; his brother Ed Blake of Farragut, IA, and Sister Patty Redinger, of Fairplay, IA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Richard was looking forward to the birth of a new grandchild in February of this year. Richard is preceded in death by his father Robert Blake and his sister Kay Paxton. 017Wilda Marie McClarnon was born April 14, 1930 east of Shambaugh, Iowa to Donald Arthur and Mable Clair (Houston) Richardson. She lived all of her life in the Shambaugh vicinity. She attended Shambaugh elementary school and graduated Braddyville High School in 1948. She was married to Wendell McClarnon August 23, 1948 in Clarinda. Wilda helped her father at his Hilltop Service Station in Shambaugh. She also worked at Super Valu, Clarinda’s community college student union, and the Lied Center’s lunch program. Wilda passed away January 26, 2012 at Westridge Quality Care & Rehab in Clarinda, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wendell; brothers John and Jerry Richardson; sister Elma Van Fosson. Robi Dale Simmons, son of Dola Marie (Lasley) and Burl Dale Simmons was born July 3, 1959 in Mt Ayr, Iowa. He attended Bedford Community Schools. Robi began working construction and later for the Iowa Department of Transportation. Robi was united in marriage to Shelli Tschacher on November 27, 1976, they settled in the Blockton area before moving to Red Oak in 1979. Shelli later passed away. Robi returned to Blockton in 1983, working in bridge building, cross country trucking and he later worked for a time at John's machine and welding. On March 12, 1987 Robi was united in marriage to TyAnn Key in Corning, Iowa. They settled in Creston in 1988 he began working Longfellow Drilling as their head mechanic and he continued to work for Longfellow Drilling as a foreman. Robi is a member of the F.O.E. Eagles Lodge #1398 in Creston, Abate of Iowa and Iowa Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union. Louis Edwin Miller was born January 10, 1924, in the Gravity area the son of Port Miller and Grace (Pfander) Miller. He grew up attending school to the eighth grade and was united in marriage to Esther Lavon. To this union six children were born, Darrell Edwin, Karolyn Esther, Joyce Elaine, Janice Kay, Richard Lee and Karen Marie. The couple later divorced. Edwin was united in marriage to Marlene Seil in 1974. They lived on the farm in Sharpsburg until 1992 when they moved into Bedford where they made their home. In April of 2010, Edwin entered the Bedford Nursing & Rehab Center after his health started to fail. Edwin was a farmer by trade who enjoyed corn shelling for the local neighbors. He loved Farmal Tractors, mowing lawns and doing yard work. He loved to go camping, watch Bonanza on TV and Big Joe Polka. He also enjoyed the produce from his garden. He looked forward to the Labor Day celebration at the Mount Pleasant Threshing Reunion. During his working years he also worked road construction and at the Gas Stop. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. The annual Father's Day Picnic was always enjoyed by Edwin and his family. The homemade ice cream was always a hit and especially if cherry pie was served along with it! He especially enjoyed going to the parade before the Lenox Rodeo and looked forward to Sharpsburg Friendship Days. 020Lillian Landis, the daughter of Robert Moyer and Laura Elena (Clark) Landis, was born August 30, 1918 near Quakertown, PA and died February 1, 2012 at the Griswold Care Center in Griswold, IA at the age of 93 years, 5 months, and 2 days. Lillian attended Brick Tavern Country School. When she was thirteen years old she made her commitment to Christ and was baptized at East Swamp Mennonite Church near Quakertown. On February 1, 1942 she was united in marriage to Clarence H. Landis at East Swamp Mennonite Church. Lillian worked at a shirt factory and also helped Clarence on the farm. In 1948, they moved from Pennsylvania to Omaha, NE where Clarence attended Grace Bible Institute (now Grace University). After Clarence graduated, they began serving churches in Red Oak, Elliott, Blockton, College Springs, Schaller, and Rippey, before retiring to Atlantic in 1986. In June of 2007 Lillian moved to the Griswold Care Center, where she lived until the time of her death. Lillian enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, gardening, and flowers. She was a member of the Women’s Federated Club of America and the Literary Book Club. Lillian was always active in the Methodist churches where they had served, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, singing in the choir, and participating in the women’s groups. She loved music and sang in many music groups and on the radio. She was an outstanding Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Lillian is preceded in death by her parents; her children in infancy: Martha, Karen, and Randall; her sisters: Emily Shafer, Mildred George, Ruth Mumbauer, and Phebe Griffith; and her great granddaughter Kayleen Amos. She is survived by her husband Rev. Clarence H. Landis of Griswold, IA; her children and spouses: Laura Amos and husband Milton of Griswold, IA, Sharon Ketelsen and husband Steve of Verdon, NE, Rev. Glenn A. (Shag) Daugherty, age 101, of Mountain Home, Ark., passed from this life on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at the Gassville Nursing Home, Gassville, Ark. Glenn was born on August 14, 1910, in Elmo, Mo. He was the son of the late Charlie and Clara (Honaker) Daugherty. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Geneva Barr. He married Edna Holmes on February 14, 1942. Glenn served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during WWII on the South Pacific Islands of New Guinea and Biak. After the war, he and Edna bought a farm southwest of Clarinda, Iowa, where he farmed for 29 years. He was a member of the Lions Club, College Springs, Iowa, the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge, both of Clarinda, Iowa. He was a substitute rural mail carrier out of both Clarinda and Shenandoah, Iowa for many years. After he retired from farming, he worked part-time at the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Glenn and Edna moved to Mountain Home, Ark., in 1983. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mountain Home, and served as volunteer for Hospice of the Ozarks for many years. Arnold Meyer Arnold Herbert Meyer was born November 12, 1921 in Harlan Township, Page County, Iowa, to Fred and Esther (Steeve) Meyer and passed away February 7, 2012 at Westridge Care Center, Clarinda, where he had resided the last three years. He was baptized November 27, 1921, at St. John Lutheran Church Clarinda, Iowa, by Pastor O. Nieting and confirmed on May 31, 1936, also at St. John by Pastor T.J. Vogel. He attended elementary school at Lee Grove and graduated from Clarinda High School, the Class of 1940.After graduation from high school Arnold worked on the family farm southwest of Clarinda and also as a tractor mechanic. On August 19, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp serving as an airplane and engine mechanic with the 433D Army Air Force Base unit. Upon returning to Clarinda in the spring of 1946 Arnold began establishing his own farm operation. On December 15, 1946, he was married to Ella Meier at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Yorktown, Iowa. Meyer was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church and served as an elder, trustee, vice-chairman and was instrumental on the building committee for the educational wing. Meyer also served as a 4-H leader and a member of the Page County Fair Board for many years. Agriculture was a passion, and Arnold spent his farming years raising corn, soybeans, hogs and cattle. Arnold also enjoyed carpentering and working with wood, making everything from M&M dispensers to quilt holders. Family was of utmost importance to Arnold; he and wife Ella were blessed with five children: Duane (Barb) Meyer, Arlen (Ann) Meyer, Kathy (Lyle) Kent, all of the Clarinda area; and Brenda (Al) Pickering of Papillion, Nebraska, and Brian (Kathy) Meyer of Independence, Iowa. He loved his 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Wilma Harms of Clarinda, nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister Edith, a brother Wendell, brothers-in-law Reinold Harms and Lyle Williams, and a niece. 027Maxine Mable (Morelock) Myers was born on January 11, 1922 to Jacob and Rena (Smith) Morelock in Fremont County, Iowa. Maxine entered into rest on February 20, 2012 in Shenandoah, Iowa following a brief illness. Maxine attended Maple Grove Country School through the 8th grade, graduating from Shenandoah High School in 1939. Maxine joined the Fisher Loyal Workers 4-H Club at 10 and noted its positive influence on her life. Maxine was united in marriage to Clifford Harry Myers on September 20, 1942 at the Summit Methodist Church, south of Shenandoah. Maxine and Clifford were blessed with four children; twins--Larry and Harry, Keith and Sharon. Clifford and Maxine spent their life farming until their retirement in 1992 when they moved to Shenandoah. Maxine celebrated her 90th birthday in January and to her delight was honored with a well attended Open House at Gardenview Care Center in Shenandoah on January 15th. Maxine enjoyed journaling for over 30 years, crossword puzzles, educating others on the history of Shenandoah, Page and Fremont Counties and playing the piano. Spending time with family and friends brought joy to her life. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifford in 1995, her brothers; Earl Morelock and Elza Morelock, sister-in-law Geraldine Morelock and daughter-in-law Carole Myers. 029Dr. Roy Edward McGraw, Jr., son of Roy Edward, Sr. and Dorothy Leona (Stevenson) McGraw, was born on February 16, 1930, at Rockford, Illinois. He entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 17, 2012 at the Hospice with Heart facility in Glenwood, Iowa at the age of 82. Born and raised in Rockford, Roy attended the Rockford Community Schools, graduating from Rockford High School with the Class of 1947. Following graduation, he attended the University of Illinois for one year. In September of 1948, Roy enlisted in the Army Air Force and served at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska. Doc was a medical laboratory technician and surgical technician. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and was discharged in August of 1952 as a Staff Sergeant. It was during his time at Offutt that Roy met and married the love of his life, Wilma Lee "Mickey" McMillin. They were united in marriage on September 8, 1951 on the Offutt Air Force Base. To this union four children were born, Diana, Cheryl, Dean and Chuck. Upon receiving his honorable discharge in 1952, Doc enrolled at Iowa State University and received his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1957. Doc worked at the veterinary clinic in Creston for one year following graduation. In 1959, Doc moved his family to Essex where he went to work for Dr. Gene Lloyd until taking over his practice. He retired in 1996. Roy and Mickey then worked at Yellowstone National Park in 2000 for the next nine years for four months out of the year. Doc was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Essex and served as the Mayor of Essex for 12 years. He also hosted an informational Veterinary radio program on KMA for several years. In his spare time he enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, fishing, gardening, stamp collecting, wood working and bird watching. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Barbara Hamm; granddaughter, Jane Elder; and grandson, Brent Maher. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Wilma McGraw of Essex; four children, Diana Elder and husband Bill of Essex, Cheryl Tyner and husband Mick of Essex, Dean McGraw and wife Nancy of St. Louis, MO, and Chuck McGraw of Farragut; two brothers, Gary McGraw and wife Karen of Montrose, CO and Bob McGraw of Rockford, IL; other relatives and many friends |
030Shirley Lee Buller (Bartles), age 31, passed away February 15, 2012 at Hospice with Heart in Glenwood, Iowa. Shirley was born May 5, 1980 in Kansas City, Missouri. Shirley graduated from Shenandoah High School with the class of 1999. She went on to Southwestern Community College and received her LPN license. During her teen years she worked at McDonalds in Shenandoah. She also worked at Pella Corporation in Shenandoah, Good Samaritan in Red Oak and Glen Haven in Glenwood. Shirley enjoyed to read, draw and visiting with her friends. Shirley was preceded in death by her father, paternal and maternal grandparents. Shirley will be missed by her husband Jason Buller, children: Shayla Duplain, Anelisa, Lexi and Luc Buller, mother: Susie Bartles, uncle Jim and Aunt Karen, several other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends |
031Diana Marie Wiesen, age 44, passed away February 14, 2012 at her home in Shenandoah, Iowa. Diana was born May 26, 1967 in Omaha, Nebraska to Joseph Raymond and Delores Lucille (Lincoln) Wiesen. Diana graduated from Shenandoah High School with the class of 1985. She delivered weekly papers for the Valley News Today. She enjoyed making hand crafted cards, going to her son, Cody's, sporting events and being with family during the holidays. Diana was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Shenandoah, Iowa. At Forrest Park Manor, she was known for her helping hand to all that needed her help. She was always up beat and loving. Diana was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Delores Wiesen and nephew Jarrod Maher. Diana will be sadly missed by her son Cody Wiesen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, sisters, Theresa Price and husband Rick of Hamburg, Iowa, Shari Teachout and husband Mike of Shenandoah, Iowa, Jodi Knight and husband Rob of Dallas, Texas, and Jacque Maher and husband Kevin of Imogene, Iowa, brother: Joe Wiesen , Jr. of Shenandoah, Iowa. 032Anna Marie Marburger, age 98, passed away February 14, 2012 at the Shenandoah Medical Center. Anna was born on December 8, 1913, in Humboldt, Nebraska to Henry and Adelia (Gunzenhauser) Stalder. Anna was raised in Humboldt, Nebraska and graduated from Humboldt High School. After graduation, she went to Peru State Normal and taught country school for two years. On June 30, 1932, Anna married Harold H. Marburger in Humboldt, Nebraska. Harold worked for a light company and was transferred many times throughout Nebraska and Missouri before settling in Shenandoah, Iowa in the early 50's. Anna was a lifelong and active member of the Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of Rebekah Lodge and Eastern Star P.E.O. Anna enjoyed playing bridge, flower gardens, sewing and reading. Preceding Anna in death were her husband, Harold, in 1979; her parents; granddaughter, Jodi Hockenberry; and brothers-in-law, Charles, Willard, and Lee Marburger. 033Iris June Delaney, age 87, passed away February 9, 2012 at Garden View Nursing Home. She was born and raised on a farm in Grant, Iowa on October 24, 1924 to Frank and Lillie (Johnson) Hensel. Her father was a farmer and her mother worked as a nurses aide. She has five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by a sister Ruth Olson of Fargo, North Dakota and a brother Ray Hensel of Shoemakerville, Pennsylvania. Iris attended school in Grant, Iowa. In her teens and early 20's she worked at Karle's Bakery in Villisca. Iris married Woodrow Delaney on December 16, 1946 and moved to Villisca, he worked as a farmer until the late 1950's, then he was employed by the Municipal Power Plant in Villisca. They had three children and son who died as an infant, two daughters, Christina Gray and Stella Baker both of Shenandoah. After the girls were in school, Iris worked as a nurses aide at Cozad and Gulick Nursing Homes in Villisca. In 1971 her husband Woodrow died of a heart attack at the age of 52. Iris had to get a birth certificate and when she went to get it the name on the certificate was Girl Hensel, she was never given a name at that time being born at home, so her mother Lillie Hensel and sister Mable Weaver, had to go and prove who she was, she could of changed her name, but kept what she had, it is funny now, but was quite an ordeal, today it would have been impossible. After the death of her husband, Iris delivered the Omaha World Herald all over the town of Villisca, she had quite a route, until the age of 78. Iris has four grandchildren, three boys and one girl. She also has five great-grandchildren, four girls and one boy, and one step-great-grandson. Iris oldest great-granddaughter took Iris's married name Delaney. Iris enjoyed doing Word Search, crocheting layettes and blankets for new born babies and making afghans for people, kept her real busy. She also enjoyed bowling and was on leagues until the early 1990's when she fell and broke her hip. She later moved to Shenandoah when she came to Garden View in October of 2008 |
034James Dean Houston was born on August 3, 1957, in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Velda (Shelby) Houston. James entered into eternal rest on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at his home in Tarkio, Missouri. Jim's early years were spent in rural Shenandoah with his parents Raymond and Velda. James worked for Nishna Productions in Shenandoah and later for Northwest Industries in Rockport, Missouri. Jim was a member of the First Christian Church in Tarkio, Missouri. Some of his interests included bowling, going out to eat, attending church, spending time with family and friends, and he always looked forward to celebrating Christmas and his birthday. Jim was preceded in death of his parents; two brothers J.H. and George Houston and a sister Louise Shaw. Those left to cherish his memory include his brothers Raymond Houston and wife Rozella of Shenandoah and Danny Houston and wife Fran of Tarkio; sister Pat Shaw of Shenandoah; Aunt Georgia Shelby of Lawrence, KS; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends |
035Darrell Lee Whitehill was born on March 3, 1923, the son of Lee and Annie (Tyner) Whitehill in Northboro, Iowa. Darrell entered into eternal rest on February 1, 2012 at the Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska at the blessed age of 88 years. Darrell's early years were spent in the Northboro community. He attended Northboro School where he played basketball and graduated high school. On January 19, 1943 Darrell enlisted in the Army Air Force. He served overseas during WWII, where he met and married his beloved wife, Dorothy Barlow on September 1, 1945 in Warrington, England. Darrell later received an honorable discharge on April 25, 1946. Darrell owned and operated Whitehill Feed and Milling from 1946 until 1971. He then went to work at Eaton's where he served as a foreman from 1971 until he retired in 1988, to care for his wife Dorothy who had fallen ill. He was a dedicated member of the Northboro United Methodist Church. Darrell was a devoted father who worked hard to provide for his family. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Annie; step-mother Opal; his loving wife, Dorothy; brothers, Kenneth and Boyd; son-in-law, James Kay; and sister-in-law, Nancy Whitehill. Those left to honor his memory include his two children, Darice Kay and Al Whitehill and wife Linda; three grandchildren, Michelle Schmoelzer and husband Reinhard, Michael Kay and Allie Wertz and husband Adam; three great-grandchildren, Alexander Kay and Ian and Evan Schmoelzer; six brothers, Donald Whitehill and wife Elaine, Duane Whitehill and wife Gwyneth, Harold Dinsmore and wife Eloise, Jim Whitehill, Leroy Whitehill and wife Lorene and Bob Whitehill and wife Ina Rhea; two sisters, Barbara Taylor and husband Junior and Darlene Harbin; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends |
