Marvin Murphy, considered the region’s guru of girls’ softball pitching, died Sunday, Feb. 5, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph after a brief illness. He was 79.
Sports transformed his life, and through sports, he transformed the lives of thousands of young people at the high school and college levels over 55 years as "Coach Murphy." He coached girls’ and boys basketball at North Nodaway High School in Hopkins, Mo., taking the girls’ team to a state championship in the mid-1960s. Teaching history and geography there from 1958-1970, he also coached track and assisted with football.
But Murphy made his greatest impact in girls’ softball. The honor of which he was most proud was his induction into the Missouri Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 2005. The award was bestowed for the more than four decades he spent helping young female pitchers realize their potential. He taught and mentored hundreds of pitchers from throughout Northwest Missouri, as well as from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas and Tennessee.
Many of his proteges went on to play college softball. They included All-Americans Teresa Wilson and the late DeOnne Sederburg.
His interest in shaping young softball pitchers began in the early 1970s, when he left teaching to become general manager of Ingels Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Maryville. He was asked to work with pitchers on the Citizen State Bank Banksters girls’ team, and the rest is local softball history.
Murphy served as girls’ pitching coach at the college level for the Bearcats in 1980 and 1981. He resumed teaching high school at North Nodaway in 1982 and convinced the district to establish a girls’ softball program. He guided the Lady Mustangs to the 1A/2A State Championship in 1985 and to a third-place finish the following year. He retired from North Nodaway in early 1990s and went on to coach softball for a year at North Andrew High School in Rosendale, Mo.
He returned to the Bearcats as a volunteer pitching coach from 2003-2006. Murphy continued to give private pitching lessons until a couple of weeks before he died.
His passion for softball pitching began at age 8 when he watched a Sheridan, Mo., newspaper man go through an elaborate windup behind his place of business to fire the ball to a catcher. Murphy excelled as an athlete at Maryville High School, where he graduated in 1950. After a stint in the Army, he lettered in baseball at Northwest Missouri State University, graduating in 1956 with a teaching degree. He later pitched in recreational leagues for Schlitz Beer and the Conoco Oilers.
Softball was a focal point of Murphy’s life, but far from his whole life. In 1955, he married Gerre Busby and began a lifetime partnership that included raising three children, enjoying five grandchildren, following college and professional sports and gaming at casinos across the country. He never tired of buying and selling vehicles, going to car auctions in Kansas City and Omaha. Murphy was also a legendary joke-teller and master of the "shaggy dog story."
A Maryville resident for most of his life, Murphy was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Sheridan, Mo., the fourth and last child of John and Matilda (Wiltsey) Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 56 years of the home; their children: Marli Murphy, Kansas City, Mo.; Sue Murphy-Andrus and husband Allen Andrus, Lenexa, Kan.; and Mike Murphy and fiance Gaylene Durham, Olathe, Kan.; four grandchildren: Katy Andrus, Minneapolis, Minn.; Nick Andrus, Lawrence, Kan.; Jack Murphy, Kansas City, Kan.; and Jordan Murphy, Olathe, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews. Below is a letter written to the Sheil family by Helga's sister Ingeborg
My dear Sheil family, nieces and nephews,
I want to express my warmest sympathy to you all. Unfortunately it is impossible for me to attend the funeral. But my thoughts are with you.
You know Helga as your mother, as daughter and son, grandchild or as daughter- or son- in- law.
Here are some impressions from Helga's life that you can imagine what a special person she was: Always warm-hearted, never leaving her cheerful nature, her humour, and always in care for her family.
We have had a hard childhood during world war two, nights in air-raid shelters, exploding bombs around us, fire, ruins and crying people all about. Long times in cold and hunger, hours waiting infront of a bakery for a piece of bread and so on over years.
Becoming a teenager life becomes slowly easier. And then she met Mike, your father. She loved him from the bottom of her heart. She always named him "My Prince". And she was never nervous to go with him wherever, leaving her home and family and all she knew that time.
It was a big step into a strange life, another country, another culture. In that time it was not easy to be a German in view to world war two, also in the United States. But with her strong personality and her trust in God she managed her life with a growing family well - not easy always, but she tried to give her best. I hope, you will never forget what she had done for you all.
Helga and I knew for long that we will never meet again, but we had a near connection in our mind and often contact by phone or e-mail. Few days ago she sent me a worderful poem that moved my heart. I will never forget my loving sister Helga.
Embracing you all. God bless you. Aunt Ingeborg |
