001Glenn Allen Brownlee was born on December 12, 1947 in Clarinda, Iowa, the son of James and Virginia (Culver) Brownlee. Glenn entered into eternal rest on Monday, June 4, 2012 in Shenandoah, Iowa following a brave battle with cancer. Glenn resided in Coin, until the age of 3 when the family moved to Farragut. He attended Farragut High School and graduated with the Class of 1966. He then went on to further his education at Northwest Missouri State University, where he graduated from in 1970. On August 15, 1970 Glenn was united in marriage to Helen Gutschenritter at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Imogene, Iowa. The couple made their home in Shenandoah. Glenn was employed at the Farragut Elevator, Farragut Ag, and most recently the UFMC in Farragut. Glenn was active in many organizations including the Elks Lodge #1122, the Knights of Columbus, Agribusiness Association of Iowa, where he served on the active membership committee from 1997-2002, was a NCAE Committee Member, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a devoted Parrott Head! Some of his passions included woodworking, traveling. golfing, spending time with his family, and driving his corvette. He was preceded in death by his parents James and Virginia Brownlee; mother and father-in-law George and Cecelia Gutschenritter; nephews T.J. 002Trevor Dylan Vermillion was born on August 29, 1990, to Mark and Ginger (Forbes) Vermillion in Shenandoah, Iowa. Trevor died by suicide on Saturday, June 2, 2012 in rural Farragut, Iowa. Trevor grew up in the community of Shenandoah and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 2009. He was a devoted Jim Morrison fan and enjoyed watching movies, listening to music, going fishing and spending time with his friends. Trevor had most recently been employed with NSK Corporation in Clarinda. 003Robert Powell Naico was born on January 14, 1937 in Essex, Iowa, the son of Harry Kondrat and Lois (Swalley) Naico. Bob entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, Iowa. Bob was a lifelong resident of Essex. He attended Essex Community Schools. In 1955 he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country as a sharp shooter and a marksman in the signal core. He was stationed in Germany. In 1958 he received an honorable discharge. On June 19, 1959 he was united in marriage to Betty Ann Grebert in Clarinda, Iowa. The couple resided in Essex following their marriage. While in school, Bob began working for Mount Arbor Nursery. He later worked as a butcher at Johnson Grocery in Essex, as a salesman for McNess, served as a Deputy for the Page County Sheriff's Department and finished his career as an officer with the Shenandoah Police Department, where he retired in 1997. He then worked part-time as a security officer for Earl May. Bob was a member of the Essex Commercial Club, the Essex Fire and Rescue, and "The Fuzz that Was". Some of his interests included fishing, gardening, hunting, telling stories, and drinking coffee at Jay Drug. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandchildren. Going to breakfast with his best friend Loren Pierce for the "fuzz that was" meetings were highlights of his day. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Joe, Jim and Jerry Naico; sister-in-law Mary Naico; brother-in-law Al Grebert; and father and mother in-law Hilbert and Frances Grebert. 005Romona June (Gitchell) Baxter was born on June 26, 1932 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the daughter of Robert Bruce and Sylvia Leona (Browning) Gitchell. Romona passed away on Monday, May 28, 2012, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Romona spent her entire life in the community of Shenandoah. It is here where she attended school, and as her family says, she received her "Masters in Motherhood." On September 13, 1948 she was united in marriage to Donald Lee Baxter in Shenandoah, Iowa. Romona worked many jobs throughout her life. From shining shoes, serving ice cream at Spencer's Grocery Store and as a young girl she ran an elevator for her aunt and uncle in Minneapolis one summer. Even as a young girl she helped her mother run errands downtown and get the ice from the ice house. She also worked at Mt. Arbor Nurseries, Henry Fields, the Liquor Store, Safeway, and cared for her mother and father. In her later years she began working as a respite caregiver, caring for many in the community. She will be greatly missed. Romona was a caring, loving and respectful woman. Her passion was her children and taking care of others. She was always there for her friends and family when they needed her most. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was currently serving as deacon. She enjoyed reading, learning about history and entertaining family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Margie, Frances and Corrine; a brother Ronald; and a great-grandson Paul Daniel. 006Beulah Irene (Brown) Huntsman was born on April 13, 1912 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Beulah entered into eternal peace on Saturday, May 26, 2012 at the Garden View Care Center, at the blessed age of 100 years. Beulah's early years were spent in the community of Emerson. She attended school in Shenandoah. She was united in marriage to Clarence "Scotty" Huntsman on January 2, 1929 in Clarinda. Following their marriage they resided in Emerson, before moving to Shenandoah in 1935. Beulah was a dedicated wife and mother. She was a member of the Full Gospel Church. Some of her hobbies included cooking, attending church and gardening. She loved to sing the old gospel favorites, whenever Pastor Marcia would come and visit at Garden View. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence "Scotty" Huntsman; and sons Clarence "Junior" Huntsman and Edward "Eddie" Huntsman. 008Robert "Bob" Sickler, age 87, passed away May 25, 2012 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or the American Legion Post #88. Robert Eugene Sickler was born on June 5, 1924 in Glenwood, Iowa, the son of Marion and Elizabeth (Farrington) Sickler. Bob entered into eternal peace on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa. When Bob was an infant, the family moved to Sarasota, Florida where the family resided until Bob was 5 years old. They then moved back to the Iowa and resided in the Silver City area and later in Shenandoah, where Bob attended school. Bob joined the United States Army in 1943 and served his country with pride until he was honorably discharged in 1944. He served overseas in China, Burma and India. Following the war, he worked in Omaha for a few years, then returned to Shenandoah where he made his home. On June 5, 1988 he was united in marriage to Corinne Duncan at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. The couple was married for 3 years before Corinne passed away on June 22, 1991. Bob was a self-employed painter his entire life. Some of his hobbies included refinishing and repairing old clocks and collecting paperweights. He was a member of the First Christian Church and the Shenandoah American Legion Post #88. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Corinne; brothers Willard "Bill" Sickler and Marion Leo Sickler; and sisters Pauline Eyberg and Betty White. 009Nancy Ann (Lewis) Terrones was born on September 15, 1937 in Bedford, Iowa, the daughter of French "Toby" and Maymie Ardella (Shehan) Lewis. Nancy entered into eternal peace on Monday, May 14, 2012 at her home in Shenandoah, Iowa following an extended illness. Nancy grew up in the Bedford community and spent most of her life in the area. In 1952, she was united in marriage to Frank Deardorff in Miami, Oklahoma. The couple was blessed with two daughters, but always had plenty of other kids around the house, that she affectionately referred to as her own. She leaves behind her sisters, a brother, and many other friends who loved her very much. She was a kind-hearted woman who will be deeply missed. 010June D. Stava was born on February 13, 1926 in Merino, Colorado, the daughter of Arthur and Alice (Woodle) Anderson. June entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska. June's early years were spent in Merino and Southwest Iowa. She attended primary school in Northboro and graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1944. She was united in marriage to Martin Stava on June 26, 1945 in Omaha, Nebraska. They made their home in Shenandoah. June worked for Tidy House as a secretary. She later worked in Omaha at Creighton University as an academic secretary. She was highly organized and efficient. She was a valuable asset to the companies she served. June enjoyed volunteering at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. She also enjoyed her neighborhood family in Omaha. She was a compassionate woman and loved spending time with family and friends. Although her and Martin didn't have any children of their own, many children looked to her as that "special" woman in in their life. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Martin; sisters Catherine in infancy and Carolyn Day; and brothers Lynn, Ike, Jim and John Anderson. 011John Carter Haldeman, age 86, of Olathe, Kansas, formerly of Shenandoah, Iowa passed away May 10, 2012 at Santa Marta Nursing Home in Olathe, Kansas. John was born September 17, 1925 in Omaha, Nebraska to John I. and Olivia B. (Carter) Haldeman. Growing up in Shenandoah, Jack attended Central Grade School, Shenandoah Junior High and three years at Shenandoah High School. He attended Culver Summer Navel Academy and graduated from high school at Kemper Military Academy. Jack joined the Navy B-12 program at Southeast Missouri State College followed by three years in the U.S. Navy. He was aboard the USS Pringle as a radio operator in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. His ship was sunk off of Okinawa April 16, 1945. Following World War II, Jack attended the University of Missouri and received a degree in Marketing. Jack worked for his father at the Home Oil Company in Shenandoah from 1950-1957. He married Margaret Goodner of Shenandoah in 1953. From 1957-1970 John lived in Cedar Rapids and worked for Collins Radio and Tommy Tucker Realty. In 1970, he moved Iowa City and worked for Roshek's Dept. Store. Prior to retirement, Jack was a dispatcher for the University of Iowa Security. Following retirement, John and Margarent returned to live in Shenandoah. They joined the First Presbyterian Church and First Congregational Church. He later moved to Olathe, Kansas to be closer to his daughter, Anne. Throughout many years, Jack was active in PTA, Kiwanis and Amateur Radio. Preceding John in death was his wife Margaret; his parents, John I. and Olivia Haldeman; a sister, who died at birth; brother-in-law, Thomas Goodner; sister-in-law, Helen Hawk and husband Kenneth; and his father and mother-in-law, William and Eva Goodner. John will be sadly missed by his two daughters, Jane Haldeman and her husband Doug Price, and Anne Barcus and Mike Barcus; five grandchildren, Cameron Price, Mallory Price, Elizabeth Foster, Jennifer Kim, and Bradley Barcus; great-grandchildren, Mia and Miley Kim, Matthew and Andrew Foster; sister-in-law, Phyllis Goldberg; other relatives and friends |
012Betty Jean Davis was born on February 9, 1947 in Huron, South Dakota, the daughter of Charley and Amelia (Fassler) Davis. Betty entered into the arms of her Lord on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Nebraska Medical Center following a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Betty's life was spent primarily in the communities of Southwest Iowa. She attended Shenandoah Elementary School through the 3rd grade then attended school at the Glenwood State School. She later went to work with Nishna Productions at their Shenandoah and Red Oak locations. Betty was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Shenandoah. She enjoyed watching DVD movies and spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved her cat "Ginger." Betty had a heart of gold and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. 013Marilyn Beth Keep, age 77, entered into eternal peace on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at her home in Shenandoah. She was born October 8, 1934 in rural Blanchard, the daughter of David and Lola (Hullman) Finlay. Beth graduated from Coin High School in 1953. She also attended one year of college at Clarinda Junior College. Beth was united in marriage to Orville Dean Keep on August 26, 1954 at her parent's farm house in rural Coin. Following their marriage they moved to Shenandoah. Beth worked for Central Surveys from 1954 to 1957, Earl May Seed & Nursery Co. from 1958 to 1971, Henry Fields Seed & Nursery Co. from 1972-1978 and retired from Imperial Inc. in 1998. Beth held secretarial/clerical positions at each of these companies. Beth was a member of Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary and Summit United Methodist Church where she was a historian, communion steward, and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed sports, loved to listen to and watch games, gardening, hiking and watching wildlife. She was also of great help to Orville out on the farm. Her grandchildren were the apple of her eye. Planning and organizing family get-togethers, brought her much joy. 014Phyllis Marie (Olson) Lundgren, daughter of Carl Emanuel and Nellie Sophia (Wedell) Olson, was born on July 4, 1923 in York, Nebraska. She passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Shenandoah Medical Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 88. Her early life was spent in the York, Nebraska area before the family moved to Strahan, Iowa, where Phyllis attended and graduated from Strahan High School with the Class of 1941. On February 15, 1953, Phyllis was united in marriage to Vernon Martin Lundgren at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. To this union two sons were born, Randall and Kirk. Following their marriage they resided in rural Yorktown, Iowa before moving to Essex in 1994. Phyllis worked at one of the Shenandoah banks, Henry Field's Seed & Nursery, Lawson's Jewelry store and several other retail stores throughout her working career. She was a member of the Fremont Covenant Church and later transferred to the Faith Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex. Her interests were her family and grandchildren. Preceding Phyllis in death were her parents; husband, Vernon, in 1999; and sister, Carol MacDonald Olson. Survivors include her two sons, Randall Lundgren of Essex and Kirk Lundgren and his wife Holly of Urbandale, IA; two grandchildren, Ciera Lundgren and Carter Lundgren, both of Urbandale, IA; two sisters, Eloise Turner of Papillion, NE and Lorraine Grindle of Glenwood, IA; two sister-in-laws, Myrtle Greever and husband Keith of Shenandoah and Nadine Lundgren of Essex. 015Duane Eldon West, age 73, of Farragut, Iowa passed away April 27, 2012 at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Duane was born September 4, 1938 in Shenandoah, Iowa to Everett and Feanette (Thompson) West. Duane lived his whole life in Farragut literally just one block on the same street. He graduated from Farragut High School with the Class of 1957. While in high school Duane was involved in Track and Field. After high school Duane enlisted in the United States Army Reserves from 1957-1960, he received his basic training in Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri. On September 3, 1961 he was united in marriage to Carolyn Stake in Shenandoah, Iowa. Duane was the owner of Duane E. West Trucking from 1957-2011 until his third heart attack prohibited him from continuing doing the job that he loved. Duane was a member of the Farragut Jaycees. He enjoyed buying jackets, his dog, Ruff, and living life to the fullest. Duane was preceded in death by his son Randal Brice West; father Everett West; brother-in-law Jack Stake; sister-in-law Beverly Almquist; other relatives CJ Almquist, Coes and Lois Stake. 016Ivan Dale Funk was born on September 26, 1923 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Floyd "Jack" and Fairrell (Ingram) Funk. Ivan entered into eternal peace on April 17, 2012 at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. Ivan spent his entire life in the community of Shenandoah. He graduated from Shenandoah High School with the Class of 1941. In January of 1943 enlisted in the United States Air Force, he later received an honorable discharge. On December 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Bradley at the Presbyterian Church in Shenandoah. During his working days Ivan was employed by Townsend Wholesale, Central Surveys, and Farmaster. He and Phyllis along with Melinda and Eldon owned and operated Funk's 66/ Funk-Kirby Oil. Inc. Ivan enjoyed working with the public and visiting with the customers. He was known by many of his friends as "Pinky", a nickname given to him by his uncle. Ivan was a member of the American Legion, the Jaycee's and the Presbyterian Church. He loved to travel, play golf and spending time with his children and grandchildren, brought him much joy. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Robert and Jack; and a sister Shirley Young. 017Roy Vernon Hookham was born January 18, 1941 in Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Maxine Hookham Larson. He passed away on Saturday morning, June 2, 2012 at Jennie Edmondson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 71 years, 4 months and 15 days. Roy grew up in the Shenandoah area. Following his school years, Roy served his country in the United States Army for 6 years. On December 30, 1972, he was united in marriage to Peggy Marie Chaney in Tarkio, Missouri. Roy was a hard worker. He worked for Mt. Arbor Nurseries and UBC Lumber in Shenandoah. He spent 28 years at Eaton Corporation where he worked in maintenance. Roy was a gun enthusiast. He enjoyed hunting, camping, traveling, participating in his black powder club. But his true love was his family. He would take his kids to Waubonsie Park every year to hike and they would attend numerous KC Royals baseball games. He was preceded in death by his mother; a son, Stephen Wade Hookham; a sister, Jeanitta Brownfield; and two grandchildren, Angie and Brandon Grueber. 018Floyd Orville Semmons was born May 11, 1918 in Griswold, Iowa, the son of Fred Orville and Minnie P. (Chubick) Semmons. He passed away on Thursday morning, May 31, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 94 years and 20 days. Shorty grew up in rural Page County and attended country school. He served his country in the United States Army. On April 17, 1936 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Dailey in Clarinda, Iowa. This union was blessed with eight children; Norma, Orville, Sue, Bill, Deloris, Elma, John and Marquitta. Shorty worked as a mechanic for many years. He was at Duncan Motors in Clarinda and then Snyder Motors which later became Select Motors in Shenandoah. He loved to tinker with motors and helping his grandkids build things. He also enjoyed old cars and tractors. 019Barbara Jean Gruber was born July 5, 1949 in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of David Lyman and Evelyn Elizabeth (Kofoed) Kerr. She passed away on Saturday afternoon, May 12, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Villisca, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 10 months and 7 days. Barb grew up in the Red Oak area and graduated from Red Oak High School in 1967. She later attended Iowa Western Community College for two years where she received her LPN. On April 4, 1970, she was united in marriage to Randy Gruber in Red Oak, Iowa. This union was blessed with three children, Nathan, Eric and Lynae. Barb worked as an LPN for 10 years and worked for Shenandoah Schools for three years then returned home to raise her three children. She was a member of the Norwich United Methodist Church and was active in the UMW there. She was also an avid reader. Her true love was her family, especially her children. 020Richard Henry “Dick” Rolf was born July 23, 1918 near Shenandoah, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Carrie (Bredensteiner) Rolf. He passed away on Thursday morning, May 10, 2012 at the Shenandoah Medical Center at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 17 days. Richard grew up in rural Page County and graduated from Northboro High School in 1936. He loved being outdoors and working on his farm. He farmed in the Northboro area his entire life. On August 30, 1975, he was united in marriage to Lois Adelung. Richard was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Sidney, Iowa for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lois; and a brother, Kenneth Rolf. 021Evelyn Bernice Maher was born January 25, 1928 in Imogene, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas Patrick and Catherine (Sweeney) Maher. She passed away on Tuesday afternoon, May 1, 2012 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah at the age of 84 years, 3 months and 7 days. Evelyn grew up in the Imogene area and graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1946. She later attended college for a year. She was a certified CNA, CMA and a pharmacy tech. She worked in purchasing at the hospital for over 35 years. She also worked for many years at Montgomery Wards. She had been a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for many years and was currently a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. She loved to work. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting and dancing. But, her true love was her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Patricia Veronica Maher, Mary Anderson and Myrtle Woosley; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Maher. Harold grew up in the Farragut area and graduated from Farragut High School. Following high school, Harold was united in marriage to Joyce Thompson in Shenandoah, Iowa. This union was blessed with four children, Harold, James, Mary and Connie. Harold worked for many years at Farm Master in Shenandoah. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and helping people. Walter Herman Eitzen was born September 7, 1918 on the family farm near Bethesda, Iowa north of Immanuel Lutheran Church to Herman Eitzen and Emma (Sunderman) Eitzen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Walter attended Immanuel Lutheran School. Walter was united in marriage on September 19, 1948 to Ruth Herzberg at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Walter grew up on the farm and helped with the farming operation. He purchased a farm on Highway 71 in the Forty's near Villisca where he spent the rest of his farming career. Walter was a lifelong farmer and proud cattle feeder. He took great pride in his farm and cattle. He and Ruth made many cattle buying trips to the Sand Hills of Nebraska forming longtime friendships. Walter was well known for his western attire and fondness for his red tractors. He was an active longtime member of the Page County Cattleman Association and was chairman of the board of the Production Credit Association. Walter and Ruth enjoyed going to auctions and antiquing. He was an active longtime member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Villisca, Iowa. Alice was raised in Colfax Township in Southwestern Iowa graduating from Blanchard Memorial High School in 1932. She graduated from the University of Iowa School Of Nursing in 1936 and worked at the University Hospital. Alice married Robert Edgar Wheeler, a high school classmate, in San Diego, CA in November 1938. They lived in a number of locations around the United States as Edgar completed a 30 year Navy career. Her three sons were born in Virginia, Rhode Island and Indiana. They settled in Lake Bluff, Illinois and Alice turned a lifelong love of books into a career as a Librarian, retiring from the Waukegan Library as Children's Librarian. During the 1980's she served on the Lake Bluff Library Board. In 2009, she was honored by the library and her neighbors in the Lake Bluff Fourth of July Parade as a "Living Legend". A lifelong Presbyterian, Alice was an ordained Elder and member of the First Presbyterian Church of Waukegan since 1964. She served in numerous capacities in the congregation. She was also an active member of P.E.O. Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, R. Edgar Wheeler and her brother, William Edgar Copeland. After graduating from Clarinda High School in 1937 with a Normal Training Certificate, she taught in Page County Schools, Fruit School and Davis School. Lena and John Kenagy were married at her rural home, east of Shambaugh on May 22, 1941. They were blessed with four children, Janet, John Jr., Navella and Margaret. They lived in the Kenagy family home in Lincoln Township and farmed there until his death in 1989. Lena was a skilled seamstress, good cook, a talented pianist and a hard worker. She enjoyed reading, caring for her garden and flowers, mowing her lawn, church activities, monthly luncheons with high school classmates and spending time with family members. Lena was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mira; husband, John Kenagy, Sr.; sister, Mildred and her brothers, Willie, Ferris, Lysle, Bufort, Delmar, Dean and Marion. Roberta Joan (O'Riley) Young was born October 30, 1936 in Iowa City, IA to Edward and Gladys O'Riley. She lived in Prescott starting at the age of 3 and was baptized at the Prescott Methodist Church. In her early years, Roberta worked for several different people doing housework, mowing lawns and delivering papers. At the age of 13 Roberta attended school and was a live in housekeeper and cook for a local Prescott woman. On June 8, 1956 she married William C. Young and moved to Lenox, IA where they resided for over 50 years. During her time in Lenox Roberta worked at Bunn Jewelry and Super Valu. What she enjoyed the most was being a stay at home mom to her boys and doing volunteer work. Roberta's numerous volunteering activities included being a nursery attendant, first and second grade Sunday School teacher for the Lenox Methodist Church, teaching fifth and sixth grade bible school for the Combined Churches of Lenox, teaching a craft class for Matura, being a WEBLOS Boy Scout leader, being a Junior American Legion Auxiliary leader, being a Lady in Blue, working over 1000 hours for American Legion Auxiliary and holding the office of 2nd Vice President, being the Red Cross Local Chairman for Taylor county, being the Secretary for WSCS for the Methodist Church, holding every office for the UMW including Circle Leader, Secretary and President, volunteering at the Lenox Care Center and Taylor Ridge Estates. In her spare time Roberta enjoyed reading cook books and trying new recipes. Roberta was preceded in death by her mother and father, brother Richard, two infant sons - Jackie and Jeffery, and adult son Roger. She moved to New Market the last half of eighth grade till her senior year then moved to Diagonal and graduated from high school there in 1941. Gwen and Jim Bunker were united in marriage July 18, 1942 in Maryville, Missouri. They were blessed with two sons, Bill and Kerry. Preceding her in death were her parents and husband Jim Bunker (2007). Gilbert Alvin Blake was born June 7, 1942 in Bedford, Iowa to Issac Milton Blake and Leona Mae Larson Blake. He entered into rest in the early morning hours on May 28, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Gilbert grew up in Bedford, attending school in Bedford, IA. He worked as a painter with his father and brother Adrian for several years. He also had worked in the nurseries in Shenandoah. After moving back to the Bedford-Gravity area, he sought work at the Schildberg Rock Products in January 1966 staying at that job until retirement in June 2006. He was very dedicated to his job and enjoyed the camaraderie of his fellow workers. Gilbert had a love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was fortunate to get to go several times to Colorado, elk hunting, and Wyoming to hunt antelope. He went on fishing trips to Canada, Minnesota and Southern Missouri. Gilbert was also interested in working with wood, thinking that he could spend some time on that in his retirement. Gilbert enjoyed having a garden and watching it grow and working in the yard. He very much enjoyed family and friends telling stories from his past. Also, telling jokes for hours on end! Mostly he enjoyed their company. Gilbert loved his family and was very close to all, including his three grandsons; Sam, Quinn, John; four granddaughters; Natasha, Tonie, Danielle, Lisa; two great grandsons, Levi and Adain and his great granddaughter Ashlin. In April, 1935 she married Donald "Doc" Bubb. Bessie worked as a telephone operator for 12 years before becoming a dental assistant for Dr. William Cullen. In 1967 the dental office changed hands and she began a 29 year run as Dr. Rudy Imm's dental assistant. While in Lenox, Bessie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church where she was the treasurer for the St. Patrick's Altar Society for 25 years. She also served on the Lenox Stock & Saddle and Rodeo's parade committee. In 1993, Bessie and her sister, Edna Grey, moved to Bentonville, Arkansas to be closer to their family. She was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church. Bessie was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Edna and Jacobus, one brother Ora and her husband Doc. Bessie enjoyed her family very much. She was especially proud of her great-great nephew, Nicholas. He was a resident of Colorado Springs for the past 45 years. During his distinguished service in the USAF he was a pilot in World War II, Korea, the Berlin Air Lift and Vietnam. His many honors included the Distinguished Flying Cross. After retiring, he was the Customer Relations Manager for Money Oldsmobile and then in 1972 started Colonial Conoco Distributorship. He was also a wholesale car dealer. He grew up in Sharpsburg, and then Gravity. He was married to his high school sweetheart for 55 years, Gwendolyn (Walker), who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his son Randall. He is survived by daughter Janet Jordan (Dave) of Penrose, CO, grandchildren Kimberly Directo (Darryl) of Colorado Springs, Gregory Stogdill (Melanie) of Arkansas, Kari Garcia of Arkansas, Danielle Jordan, Derek Jordan, and Dillon Jordan of Colorado Springs, and 3 great grandchildren. Pauline LaVon Miller, was born near Conway, Taylor County, Iowa on September 18, 1922, the daughter of John Andrew Hargin and Allice Susan (Chaney) Hargin. She was the oldest of two daughters born to John and Alice. At the age of 13, Pauline lost her mother and had to take on many of the household duties. She started school at a country school and later transferred to town and graduated from Lenox Community School. Pauline loved going to school, going to Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa after high school. After two years at Parsons she was able to get a teaching certificate and start teaching. While at Parsons, Pauline met her first husband Bruce Arnold McKern. This union resulted in her only child, Lana LaVon (McKern) Ramsdell. She lost Bruce during WWII. Moving back to Lenox she started teaching in the Lenox school system. Pauline stayed at the Lenox Hotel while teaching and met second husband Lyle (Pete) Miller, who had a business across the street from the hotel. After her marriage to Pete she returned to college attending Drake University in Des Moines weekends and summers until she obtained her Bachelors in Education. Once again, after ten years of marriage she lost another husband. Being widowed twice she decided she would stay single. She continued taking classes here and there over the years with almost enough credit to get her Masters. Pauline started teaching 5th grade in Lenox and when she retired she was teaching High School English and College Prep classes. Going to Europe with students, family, and friends was one of her favorite times...having gone 18-20 times. |

He was a graduate of Maryville High School, class of 1949. He was preceded in death by his parents and by 3 brothers, Donald R., Max, and Junior Piveral. James retired in 1996 from Energizer in Maryville. On July 12, 1979, James was united in marriage to Kathryn Kizer, she survives of the home. He is also survived by children, Sandra (Dan) Nesper, Sr., Enumclaw, WA; Steve (Joyce) Piveral, Gilbert, AZ; Mark (Dawn) Piveral, Pensacola, FL; step- children, Mike Kizer, Allen, TX; Deb Kizer Walker, Kansas City, MO; Dan (Sheila) Kizer, Maryville, MO; 5 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; many other relatives and numerous friends. Celebration of Life services will be held at 1:30 PM Friday, June 8, 2012 at the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, MO. The burial will be in the Quitman Cemetery, Quitman, MO. Cleo Charles (C.C.) Maffitt 67, of Graham, MO went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO. He was born on December 21, 1944 in Bolckow, MO to Donald and Irene (Mitchell) Maffitt. C.C. attended the Trego country school from grades one through three, and finished his education at Graham High School graduating in 1962. He attended Northwest Missouri State University and graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Agriculture. C.C. taught Vocational Agriculture in Craig, MO. He owned and operated an agriculture business in Skidmore, MO. He later operated a hog confinement operation and at his death owned and operated Maffitt Trucking Services. C.C. had a love for flying, owning his own airplane at one time. It was his delight to offer others rides as well as transportation via air to those in need. All those who know him recalled his giving spirit and his witty sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Irene; paternal and maternal grandparents; and an infant niece. He is survived by three sisters, Vivian Bickerstaff, Savannah, MO, Donna Fay Maffitt, St. Joseph, MO, and Pamela Sorensen and husband Dave of Camden Point, MO; as well as two nieces, Lori Speer, and Sherri Laney, and a nephew, Bruce Bickerstaff; two great nieces and three great nephews. He is also survived by his fiancé and love of his life, Pam Galbraith of Stanberry, MO. Mr Maffitt has been cremated. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Graham Community Building, Graham, MO. Inurnment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery, Graham, MO. Laverne Richard (Coke) Archer 77, of Fairfax, MO passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at the Heartland Hospital in St. Joseph, MO. Coke was born in Maitland, MO on June 11, 1934 to Earl Richard and Minnie Ruth (Adams) Archer. He had been a resident of the Mound City and Fairfax areas most all his life. Coke had been employed by several farmers over the years and had also worked for Abie Showalter Farms and Auctioneering of Craig, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Leon, and another brother at birth; and a grandchild. Survivors include his children, Diana Gorges, Joplin, MO, Tina Smith, Englewood, FL, Christina Hatfield, Pittsburg, KS, Lisa Edwards, Pittsburg, KS, and Delby Archer, Des Moines, IA; 4 sisters, Lavon Smail, Maryville, MO, Elva (Polly) Hosfiel Maryville, MO, Ruth Kooken, Mesa, AZ, Mary Dow, Mesa AZ; and 12 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Anita Charlene Brunk 82, of Shenandoah, IA and formerly of the Skidmore, MO area passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at a hospital in Omaha, NE. Anita was born on May 20, 1929 in Skidmore, MO to Charles L. and Sara E. (Johnson) Coston. She was a longtime resident of the area and moved to Shenandoah in 1991. On May 20, 1946 she was united in marriage to Roy L. Brunk in Troy, KS. Roy passed away in 1996; she was also preceded in death by both her parents in 1991, and her sister, Lois Bowenkamp in 2008. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Skidmore, MO and she was a homemaker. Left to mourn her passing are her children, Gailian (Jerry) Kellison, Shenandoah, IA, Wayne (Alice) Brunk, Westboro, MO, Tracia Brunk-Long, Lincoln, NE, and Stephanie Brunk, Shenandoah, IA; her sister Donna Johnson, Shenandoah, IA; 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma M. (Smith) Demott 99, of Hopkins, MO passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at the Golden Living Center in Maryville, MO. Thelma was born on August 24, 1912 in Parnell, MO to Pearl and Mary (Cox) Smith. At the age of 2 they moved to Bedford, Iowa and she was a graduate of the Bedford High School, class of 1931. On December 12, 1931 she married Harry Demott in Hopkins, MO. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Donald D. Demott; 7 sisters, and 2 brothers. Thelma and Harry were the parents of 7 children; Richard (Nancy) Demott, Pickering, MO, Anita Dougherty, Hopkins, MO, Carol Gorman, Maryville, MO, Mary K. (Russell) Clements, Maryville, MO.
