Garrett School History (Pollard
School) Monroe County Appeal “Yesteryears”
6-28-84 The Garrett
School in the southwest corner of the county was started Dec. 26, 1851.
One acre of land was deeded for $1.00 by Mr. and Mrs. Martin E. Settles,
& J. W. Garrett. These were early settlers. Later, on October 29,
1881, 2 acres were donated by Mrs. And Mrs. James T. Garrett and a 2nd
school was built about ˝ mile south of the old building. Directors in
1881 were James Garrett, Louise Garrett, George Cottingham, John Pollard,
& I. N. Rector. Garrett voted
for the consolidated high school as the cheapest and most practical means
of providing a high school education for the country boys and girls. Madison Times
– 1922 Garrett grade school children stayed in their school building until the spring of 1949
