Seventy three years
ago there were 44 or more students in the one room Washington
rural school district north of Paris, which like others of
Monroe County, was closed many years ago. This picture, owned by
Russell Brady of Paris, formerly of the Washington district, was
taken on September 28, 1904.

“Washington grade school was
opened Tuesday, September 1st with an enrollment of four
pupils who are Lola Faye Burton, 4th grade, Joseph Rodger
Burton, and Rice Lee Burton Jr., 7th grade, and Lela Mae
Burton, 8th grade. Mrs. Telitha Griffin is the teacher. Much
improvement has been made on the school building for which we are all
grateful.
