For many years the area between the Christian Church and the present Odd Fellows Hall was maintained as a city park. It contained a bandstand, and quite often people gathered to hear a band concert. The first band was organized in 1911. Its members were Thomas Cunningham, Jack Hackey, Bob Evans, Boyd Curtright, Cecil Hess, Elwood Curtright, Rudolph Lamme, Ralph Ellington, Holliday Arnold, Lewis Curtright. and John Hill. The park was a place for community gatherings, ice cream socials, speakings, and occasionally a medicine show. Jonquils still bloom in the park area every spring as a reminder of by-gone days. In the nineteen-twenties there was a community croquet ground located on the lot where Jim Hultz now lives. The town often had a baseball team. Members of a team in 1910 were Jake Lamme, Lewis Hobson, Curt Hill, Elwood Curtright, Holliday Arnold, Dave Delaney, Jim McCreery, Lewis Curtright. George Hill. At one time a picture show was operated in what was called the “Town Hall” on the top floor of the furniture hall store, which was located on the east side of Main Street near the present grocery store. Here also were held roller skating parties, and school exercises before the new building was constructed. Rocky Branch, a mile east of the town, provided a picnic and excursion area for the young people of the town. The town now has no recreational facilities, but nearby are the Rocky Branch Development and the Howe Fishing Lake. The Holliday Band - 1913 |
