Built
in 1845 by Thomas Conyers, a major in the Black Hawk War, who
operated a grocery store in a building on the present site of
the Monroe County Abstract building. The original house has
rafters of saplings, with one side only hewed flat to hold
roof sheathing, the rest of the saplings still original soft
pine, wide board floors are in use. Original fireplace still
used in living room. Interior walls of solid brick, each with
its own foundation. North part added in 1905 has eight heavy
curved glass windows on northwest
