In May 1967 the State
Legislature took action to preserve the covered bridges in the
state of Missouri.
Senator Richard
Southern of Monroe City, Missouri introduced the Senate Bill
No. 179. The bill reads as follow:
"The Missouri
State Park Board shall repair and maintain as state historical
sites all covered bridges (wooden) which are acquired through
any grant, gift, donation device or request to or for the use
of the State of Missouri.
Later the Senate stated
that there were six covered bridge structures in Missouri at
that time.
It was estimated that
$16,000 would be provided for repair and maintenance for each
bridge.
The Senate Bill No. 179
was signed by Governor Warren E. Hearnes. The takeover was to
be effective October 13, 1967.
